As plantas lenhosas, de maneira geral, possuem alto teor de lignina, podendo alcançar valores entre 25 a 35% em relação a massa seca. Valores normalmente encontrados nas plantas arbóreas. Algumas plantas jovens ou de hábitos de crescimentos inferiores aos arbustivos possuem baixo teor de lignina, neste sentido, buscando superar os atuais níveis de lignificação, foram testados em plantas fatores exógenos de estimulação. Um sistema enzimático complexo é responsável pela formação biossintética dos precursores intermediários da lignina, entretanto as peroxidases são responsáveis pela fase determinante da polimerização na parede celular, cuja atividade foi pressupostamente modificada através da aplicação de cálcio e boro, visando aumentar a resistência da planta aos fatores bióticos e abióticos, entre outros. Para tal, utilizou-se a espécie Solanum gilo (família Solanaceae) cultivar Português como planta experimental sob vários tratamentos, monitorando as aplicações quinzenal e semanalmente, nas formas simples e múltiplas de aplicação de CaSO4, H3BO3, CaCl2 e H3BO3/CaSO4, CaSO4/CaCl2, CaCl2/ H3BO3 e CaSO4/H3BO3/CaCl 2. O tratamento CaSO4/CaCl2, estatisticamente avaliado, induziu às plantas a uma taxa de lignificação equivalente ao teor de lignina de 19%, superando a testemunha que apresentou 14 %. Modificações anatômicas foram também observadas nos elementos de vaso e fibras no que tange ao comprimento, diâmetro e espessura da parede celular. A quantificação da lignina foi realizada segundo o método de Klason. A espectroscopia no infravermelho foi utilizada para análise composicional, revelando a existência de modificação da composição de lignina guaiacílica da planta testemunha (G:S), 1,2:1 para lignina siringílica (G:S), 0,8:1 nas plantas que receberam o tratamento (CaSO4/CaCl2) quinzenal e semanalmente, respectivamente.

Normally woody plants present high lignin content, even overcoming 35% from dry weight. Such values are almost found in arboreal plants. However, young plants or plants with lower growth form than tree show low lignin content. In this term, current levels of lignification could be increased by exogenous factor of stimulation. There are complex enzymatic systems responsible for the lignin intermediary precursors formation, however, the peroxidases enzymes have been pointed out as responsible for the lignin polymerization in the cellular wall, whose activity was modified supposedly by calcium and boron application, seeking to increase the plant resistance to the biotic and non biotic factors. The Solanum gilo (Solanaceae family), (Portuguese cultivars) was used as experimental plant according to the several treatments, installed twice (15 days) and once (7 days) for month, in the simple and multiple form to CaSO4, H3BO3, CaCl2 and H3BO3/CaSO4, CaSO4/CaCl2, CaCl2/H3BO3 and CaSO4 /H3BO3/CaCl2 treatments, respectively. The treatment (CaSO4/CaCl2) appraised statistically showed plants with 19% of lignin, overcoming the standard plants that presented 14%. Anatomical modifications were also observed in the vessels and fibers according to the length, diameter and thickness of the cellular wall. The lignin was quantified by Klason method and the compositional analysis was carried out by infrared spectroscopy, (free extractives samples), revealing the existence of compositional modification from guaiacyl lignin in the standard plants (G:S) 1.2:1 to syringyl lignin (G:S) 0.8:1 in the plants that received (CaSO4/CaCl2) twice for month and weekly, respectively.

Abstract In order to estimate population parameters, to determine the divergence among seed trees and to improve germplasm, collect optimization on fragmented population of Euterpe edulis Mart., for the species genetic conservation, fructification traits were evaluated in 45 seed trees. The analysis of variance revealed presence of variability among seed trees and through the Mahalanobis’s distance and Tocher grouping method; 13 divergent genotypes were identified as a priority for genetic conservation.

Resumo Com objetivos de estimar parâmetros populacionais, determinar a divergência entre matrizes e subsidiar a otimização da coleta de germoplasma em uma população fragmentada de Euterpe edulis Mart, com vista à conservação genética da espécie, avaliaram-se características de frutificação em 45 matrizes. A análise de variância revelou presença de variabilidade entre matrizes, e através da distância generalizada de Mahalanobis e agrupamento pelo método de Tocher. Foram identificados 13 grupos de matrizes divergentes, prioritários para a conservação genética.

Abstract The aim of present research was to verify the occurrence of albinism character and to estimate the coefficient of endogamy of a juçara palm (Euterpe edulis Mart.) population. On this context, were evaluated fifteen free pollination progenies. The progeny test showed that 13.3% of the seed trees presented albino seedlings and therefore the heterozygous for the characteristic. Based on the ratio between albino and normal seedlings, was estematel that the average tax of self-fertilization was 10.0%. The average value of the endogamy coefficient was 0.05. These values are considered the above of the limits for an alogamous species.

Resumo O objetivo desse artigo foi avaliar a ocorrência do caráter albinismo e estimar a endogamia em uma população de palmito juçara (Euterpe edulis Mart.). Neste contexto, foram avaliadas progênies de polinização livre de 15 (quinze) matrizes da espécie, oriundas de população conservada. No teste de progênies, 13,3% das matrizes apresentaram indivíduos albinos e, portanto, heterozigotas para a característica. Com base na relação mudas albinas/normais, estimou-se uma taxa média de autofecundação de 10,0% e conseqüentemente, um valor de coeficiente de endogamia média de 0,05. Esses valores foram considerados limites para espécies alogâmicas.

ABSTRACT This communication turn on the use of Solanun gilo (Solanaceae) for lignification test on the nutritional point of view. This plant was chosen due its fast growth, high calcium mobility and low lignin content (15,51%). The experiment was carried out using calcium sulfate (CaSO4) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) for weekly and biweekly application. The treated plants with CaSO4/CaCl2 (biweekly application) showed 4% of additional lignin content. High syringyl unit concentration was also verified at Guaiacyl: Syringyl ratio (G: S) of 0.8:1 and 1.2:1, for weekly and biweekly application, respectively. The estimation of the lignin content and its composition were performed by Klason and infrared spectroscopy methods.

ABSTRACT Progeny test of Virola surinamensis Warb. with 41 half-sib families at the 60 months of age, were evaluated applying different selections criteria, toward genetic improvement: the conventional selection. Combined selection index proposed by PIRES (1996), classic index of Smith and Hazel and the index of desired gains of Pesek and Baker were applied. The combined selection index was the criteria that showed the highest gains ranging between 152% and 36%. Those results are in agreement with most suitable selection criteria for genetic improvement in a virola population.

RESUMO Em um teste de progênies de 41 famílias de meios-irmãos de Virola surinamensis Warb, aos 60 meses de idade, avaliou-se a aplicação de diferentes critérios de seleção, para fins de melhoramento genético: a seleção direta, o índice de seleção combinada proposto por Pires (1996), o índice clássico de Smith e Hazel e o índice com base nos ganhos desejados de Pesek e Baker. O índice de seleção combinado foi o critério que apresentou os maiores ganhos, que se situaram entre 152% e 36%. Esses resultados indicam-no como o critério mais adequado para o melhoramento genético na população avaliada.

ABSTRACT A progeny test of grevilea (Grevillea robusta A. Cunn), was evaluated for estimate the genetic parameters and the gains through selection for high plants, since first to the fourth year of plantation age. It was detected significant differences between progenies and the heritability estimated revealed moderate genetic control for the character and, possibilities of considerable gains with the selection among and within families. There were variations along the years in the estimates, except for the averages and variances. It was not observed the stabilization in the values of the parameters, being suggested the continuity of the experimentation by more time, for safe inference.

RESUMO Em um teste de progênies de grevilea (Grevillea robusta A. Cunn), objetivou-se estimar os parâmetros genéticos e ganhos genéticos por seleção para altura de plantas, do primeiro ao quarto ano de idade de plantio. Detectaram-se diferenças significativas entre progênies e as estimativas de herdabilidade revelaram moderado controle genético para o caráter e, conseqüentemente, possibilidades de ganhos consideráveis com a seleção entre e dentro de famílias. Houve variações ao longo dos anos nas estimativas, exceto para as médias e variâncias. Não se observou a estabilização nos valores dos parâmetros, sugerindo-se a continuidade da experimentação por mais tempo, para inferência seguras.
