ABSTRACT Studies on mortality due to fishing based on isolating the effect caused by catches are scarce. The present study analyzed this aspect using the ghost shrimp Callichirus major (Say, 1818) as a biological model, which is heavily harvested along the Brazilian coast. For that purpose, density of burrows and population structure of C. major was examined at two adjacent beaches, Gonzaga and Itararé, from the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Gonzaga beach was considered as control because since 1992 a municipal law prevents the capture of C. major, whereas Itararé as treatment since in this place the species is harvested throughout the year. Burrow density and female CL size were significantly higher in Gonzaga than that Itararé. Sex-ratio did not differ significantly from 1:1 in Itararé, differing from the observed in the area without fishing mortality and also to the general pattern reported in other species of ghost shrimps in which females outnumbered than males. Reproductive potential was significantly smaller in Itararé than Gonzaga, as result of the reduced number of females present in this area relative to Gonzaga. A preliminary estimation indicates that 71 % of shrimps in Itararé died as result of fishing. This information suggests non-viability of C. major in this area given the current pressure of fishing. Presence of C. major in the beach of Itararé and probably in other nearby areas where exploitation occurs would be favored by the permanent supply of larvae from Gonzaga beach where the species is protected by and municipal surveillance.

RESUMEN La mortalidad por pesca ha sido pocas veces estudiada aislando el efecto causado por las capturas. En este estudio se analizó este aspecto usando como modelo biológico al camarón fantasma Callichirus major (Say, 1818), el cual es colectado intensamente en varias regiones de la costa de Brasil. Para ello, la densidad de las galerías y la demografía poblacional de C. major fue analizada en las playas de Gonzaga e Itararé, dos playas contiguas del Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. La playa de Gonzaga fue considerada como control debido a que desde 1992 una ley municipal impide las capturas de C. major, mientras que Itararé fue considerada como tratamiento ya que en este lugar este camarón es recolectado durante todo el año. Los resultados mostraron que la densidad de las galerías y el tamaño de las hembras fueron significativamente mayores en la playa de Gonzaga que en Itararé. En Itararé, la proporción sexual no mostró diferencias significativas de la relación 1:1, lo cual no se ajustó a lo observado en el área sin mortalidad por pesca y al patrón general reportado en otras especies de camarones fantasma del mundo en donde las hembras predominan sobre los machos. El potencial reproductivo fue significativamente menor en Itararé, como efecto del menor número de hembras presentes en esta área sometida a la pesca intensiva de camarones. De acuerdo con una estimativa inicial, un 71% de los individuos murieron por efecto de la pesca en Itararé. Esto hace inviable el sostenimiento ambiental de C. major en esta área dada la actual presión de extracción. La presencia de C. major en la playa de Itararé y probablemente en otras áreas próximas donde es capturada, estaría favorecida por el permanente suministro de larvas procedentes de la playa de Gonzaga, en Santos, que está protegida por ley y fiscalización municipal.

ABSTRACT: Spatial distribution and egg production of squat lobsters is examined from specimens deposited in the collection of the Museu de Zoologia of the Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP), Brazil. A total of 1,346 specimens of squat lobsters were analyzed, out of which 169 were ovigerous females. Ovigerous females contained ten species of Munididae (n = 165) and three of Munidopsidae (n = 4). Eleven of the thirteen studied species were distributed along the Brazilian coast, while two of the remaining species in other marine regions. The analysis of bathymetric distribution revealed the presence of four species on the continental shelf (< 200 m depth: M. spinifrons, M. pusilla, M. irrasa, M. flinti), two on the first layer of the continental slope (200-500 m: Munida forceps, A. longipes) and five distributed between 500 and 1,048 m (M. erinacea, M. constricta, M. valida, M. microphthalma, M. transtridens). Overall, species belonging to Munididae produced a higher number of eggs (554 ± 619 eggs) but of minor size (0.48 ± 0.120 mm) than species of Munidopsidae (13 ± 10 eggs; 1.12 ± 0.337 mm, respectively). Such tendency is consistent with the phylogeny of both clades whose common origin is reflected in morphological similarities both in larval and adult forms, but not in terms of the reproductive strategy that clearly separates the species belonging to these families. Results also demonstrated that egg size in squat lobsters is strongly associated with depth, which suggests the strong influence of habitat on the duration of larval development of these species.

RESUMEN: Se examinó la distribución espacial y la producción de huevos de langostillas depositados en la colección del Museu de Zoologia de la Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP), Brasil. Para ello, se analizaron 1.346 ejemplares, de los cuales 169 correspondieron a hembras ovígeras. Las hembras ovígeras estuvieron distribuidas en diez especies de Munididae y tres de Munidopsidae. Once de las trece especies estudiadas se distribuyeron en la costa brasilera, mientras que dos en otras regiones marinas. El análisis de la distribución batimétrica reveló la presencia de cuatro especies de langostillas sobre la plataforma continental (< 200 m: M. spinifrons, M. pusilla, M. irrasa, M. flinti), dos en la primera franja del talud continental (200-500 m: Munida forceps, A. longipes) y cinco distribuidas entre 500 y 1048 m de profundidad (M. erinacea, M. constricta, M. valida, M. microphthalma, M. transtridens). En general, las especies de Munididae produjeron una alta cantidad de huevos (554 ± 619 huevos) de pequeño tamaño (0,48 ± 0,120 mm) comparado con las especies de Munidopsidae (13 ± 10 huevos; 1,12 ± 0,337 mm, respectivamente). Esta tendencia es consistente con la filogenia de ambos clados cuyo origen en común se refleja en similitudes morfológicas tanto en las formas larvales como en las adultas, pero no así en la estrategia reproductiva que claramente separa las especies pertenecientes a estas familias. Nuestros resultados también demuestran que el tamaño del huevo en langostillas está correlacionado con la profundidad, sugiriendo una estrecha relación entre el hábitat y la duración del desarrollo larval de estas especies.

We conducted monthly visits to the coastal community of Mata de Limón (December 2011 to November 2012) in central Pacific of Costa Rica for assessment the extraction of the burrowing shrimp called coloncho Callichirus seilacheri, a species intensely caught as bait for fishing along the Pacific coast of Central America. The outcomes indicate that fishery effort varied between 4 and 14 harvesters day-1 with a high percentage of them from the same community (70-100%). Daily catch varied between 76 and 1120 shrimps and its value was strongly correlated with catches realized for the local harvesters (R² = 0.88). The shrimps density and total abundance in Mata de Limón was estimated in 1.2 ± 0.88 ind m-2 and 49,607 ± 3,638 individuals, respectively. Ovigerous females were exclusively present between May and November, peak in September. According to our outcomes, population of C. seilacheri in Mata de Limón could be in risk of overfishing if the daily catches exceed 800 individuals. The main results of the present study allow recommend the implementation of a total fishing ban during the reproduction peak of C. seilacheri directed to protection and conservation of this local resource for its sustainable harvesting. Also, we suggest the establishment of a management program between the community of Mata de Limón and the Instituto Costarricense de Pesca y Acuicultura (INCOPESCA) in order to optimize and legalize the extraction of this important resource.

En el presente estudio, se realizaron visitas mensuales a la comunidad de Mata de Limón (diciembre 2011 a noviembre 2012) localizada en el Pacífico central de Costa Rica para evaluar una serie de aspectos pesqueros relativos a la extracción del camarón excavador Callichirus seilacheri. Esta especie llamada comúnmente coloncho por los recolectores locales es intensamente capturada y comercializada como carnada para la pesca deportiva en la costa del Pacífico de América Central. Los resultados indican que el esfuerzo pesquero varió entre 4 y 14 recolectores día-1 con un alto porcentaje de ellos procedentes de la misma comunidad (70-100%). Las capturas diarias variaron entre 76 y 1120 camarones dependiendo principalmente del esfuerzo pesquero realizado por recolectores locales (R² = 0,88). La densidad de colonchos fue de 1,2 ± 0,88 ind m-2 y su abundancia total en el Estero de Mata de Limón fue estimada en 49.607 ± 3.638 individuos. Las hembras ovígeras estuvieron presentes de mayo a noviembre, con un máximo en septiembre. Los resultados de este estudio indican que la población de colonchos puede estar en grave riesgo de sobre-explotación si las capturas diarias superan los 800 individuos. Por ello, se recomienda la implementación de una veda total durante el pico de reproducción de C. seilacheri de manera de que este recurso local sea protegido y conservado para su uso sostenible. Se sugiere además la implementación de un plan de manejo entre la comunidad de Mata de Limón y el Instituto Costarricense de Pesca y Acuicultura (INCOPESCA) de manera de optimizar y legalizar la extracción de este recurso.

The calico box crab Hepatus epheliticus is an abundant species from shallow and continental shelf waters of the Atlantic coast of USA and Mexico. Information about population structure and sexual maturity is absent, even though this crab is caught to be used as bait for the octopus fishery in the Campeche Bank, Mexico. In order to achieve such information, a total of 768 individuals were collected from January to March 2010 through baited traps installed in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Our results showed that sex ratio is biased towards more males than females (1:0.55), contradicting to that reported in other brachyuran crabs. The absence of ovigerous females suggests that they did not enter into the traps during embryogenesis. Males reached a larger maximum size than females (64.0 ± 6.15 and 58.4 ± 5.60 mm carapace width, respectively). The general scheme of growth being positive allometric throughout ontogeny of both sexes. Males presented a transition phase from juveniles to adult corresponding to the puberty moult. The estimation of the onset of functional sexual maturity revealed a steady situation for the population, with 21.5 and 13.8% of males and females, respectively, morphologically immature at the time of catch. This study constitutes the first report on population structure and sexual maturity in a population of the calico box crab H. epheliticus.

El cangrejo caja moteado Hepatus epheliticus es un abundante braquiuro perteneciente a la familia Hepatidae, distribuido desde aguas someras hasta la plataforma continental en la costa atlántica de Estados Unidos y México. La información sobre su demografía poblacional y madurez sexual es actualmente inexistente, aun cuando esta especie es intensamente capturada como carnada en la pesquería del pulpo del estado de Campeche, México. Entre enero y marzo de 2010, se colectaron 768 especímenes usando trampas instaladas en la Península de Yucatán, México. Los resultados mostraron una proporción sexual completamente inclinada hacia los machos (1:0,55), lo cual contradice el esquema general reportado en otras especies de braquiuros. La ausencia total de hembras ovígeras, sugiere su resistencia a ingresar a las trampas durante el periodo de incubación de los embriones. Los machos alcanzaron un tamaño promedio mayor que las hembras (64,0 ± 6,15 y 58,4 ± 5,60 mm de ancho del caparazón, respectivamente), siendo el crecimiento de tipo alométrico positivo a lo largo de la ontogenia de ambos sexos. Los machos presentaron una fase de transición desde juveniles a adultos correspondiente a la muda de pubertad. La estimación de la madurez sexual funcional mostró una situación normal para la población, con 21,5 y 13,8% de machos y hembras respectivamente, morfológicamente inmaduros al momento de ser capturados. Este estudio constituye la primera aproximación a la estructura poblacional y madurez sexual del cangrejo caja moteado H. epheliticus.

The fecundity, egg volume and output reproductive of 286 ovigerous females belonging to Petrolisthes tuberculatus, P. granulosus, Allopetrolisthes angulosus, A. spinifrons and Liopetrolisthes patagonicus, collected in the rocky intertidal of northern Chile in December of 1999, was analyzed. In each species, the egg number was positively correlated with female size showing a good fit to the power function. Females of A. spinifrons and L. patagonicus were the species that produced the highest egg number (612 ± 437 and 413 ± 284 eggs, respectively). The females of P. granulosus incubated eggs of great size (0.184 ± 0.038 mm³), and were smaller in corporal size (7.3 ± 0.80 mm Lc) than the rest of the analyzed species. The potential loss of eggs during the developmental stages it is not significative (p>0.5). During the incubation period, the egg size increased between 43% (P. granulosus) and 88% (L. patagonicus). This phenomenon was more important in the populations subjected to less drying pressure, which would be related to the vertical distribution of species in the intertidal area. The reproductive output fluctuated between 3.7 and 7.4%, values within the range described for other porcellanids

Se analiza la fecundidad, rendimiento reproductivo y volumen del huevo de 286 hembras ovígeras de crustáceos porcelánidos pertenecientes a Petrolisthes granulosus, P. tuberculatus, Allopetrolisthes angulosus, A. spinifrons y Liopetrolisthes patagonicus, colectadas al sur de Iquique. El número de huevos se correlacionó positivamente con la talla de las hembras mostrando un buen ajuste a la función de poder. Las hembras de A. spinifrons y L. patagonicus presentaron las mayores cantidades de huevos, con 612 ± 437 y 413 ± 284 huevos respectivamente. P. granulosus fue la especie más pequeña (7,3 ± 0,80 mm Lc), pero se caracterizó por incubar huevos de gran tamaño (0,184 ± 0,038 mm³). La pérdida potencial de huevos durante el desarrollo embrionario no fue significativa (p>0,05) en ninguna de las especies analizadas. Durante el periodo de incubación del embrión, el tamaño del huevo aumentó entre un 43% (P. granulosus) y un 88% (L. patagonicus). Este aumento fue más importante en las especies sometidas a menor presión de desecación, lo cual se relacionaría con la distribución vertical de cada especie en la zona intermareal. La inversión de energía en la reproducción fluctuó entre 3,7 y 7,4%, valores que están dentro del rango descrito para otros crustáceos decápodos

The trophic relations of five coastal Perciformes at northern Chile were analyzed on the basis of 151 specimens of Acanthistius pictus, Paralabrax humeralis, Pinguipes chilensis, Anisotremus scapularis and Cheilodactylus variegatus collected off Iquique, in April 1996, as a preliminary way to identify trophic guilds of subtidal fishes; A. pictus, P. humeralis and C. variegatus, had the crustaceans Rhynchocynetes typus, Pseudosquillopsis lessoni and Allopetrolisthes angulosus, respectively, as the best represented items. In A. scapularis and P. chilensis the best represented items were the mollusks; however for the last species, the main food was the crustacean Cancer setosus. These fish are essentially benthophagous carnivores with a variable trophic spectrum(8 to 36 items).
