Resumen El grado de humedad es uno de los factores más importantes en la elección de procedimientos para obtención de semillas de alta calidad. En la mayoría de los programas de control de calidad, el grado de humedad se determina mediante pruebas de laboratorio con base a la remoción máxima de agua cuando la semilla se somete a la aplicación de calor en condiciones controladas. Las radiografías se caracterizan por la generación de imágenes con diferentes niveles de gris luego de la interacción de los rayos X con los tejidos de la semilla. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar los valores de escala de grises de imágenes radiográficas de semillas de soja (Glycine max (L.)) en diferentes niveles de hidratación, buscando establecer relaciones con el método convencional de determinación de humedad. Se analizaron imágenes radiográficas de semillas de dos lotes con diferencias en el tamaño de semillas en diferentes períodos de hidratación. Con las imágenes se determinaron los valores de la escala de grises en diferentes regiones de la semilla y se compararon con la prueba de humedad por el método convencional. Los valores de la escala de gris presentaron variación entre 120 a 187 y 134 a 215/píxeles para semillas pequeñas y semillas grandes, respectivamente. El análisis de imágenes según valores de gris obtenidos en diferentes periodos de hidratación permitió verificar las diferencias en las tonalidades de las estructuras vitales de semillas de soja de diferentes tamaños.

Abstract The moisture degree is one of the most important factors in choosing procedures for obtaining high quality seeds. In most quality control programs, the degree of moisture is determined by laboratory tests, based on the maximum removal of water when the seed is subjected to the application of heat under controlled conditions. The radiographic image is characterized by the generation of images with different levels of gray after the interaction of X-rays with the seed tissues. The objective of this research was to determine the gray scale values of radiographic images of soybean (Glycine max (L.)) seeds with different levels of hydration, aiming to establish relationships with the conventional method of moisture determination. Radiographic images of seeds from two lots were analyzed, with differences in seed size in different periods of hydration. With the images, the gray scale values were determined in different areas of the seed and compared with the humidity test by the conventional method. The gray scale values varied between 120 and 187 and 134 to 215 / pixel for smaller seeds and larger seeds, respectively. The analysis of images according to gray values obtained in different periods of hydration allowed to verify the differences in the shades of the vital structures of soybean seeds of different sizes.

Resumo: O uso de recursos computacionais para a avaliação do potencial fisiológico de sementes tem atraído atenção de pesquisadores e profissionais do setor sementeiro. O objetivo deste estudo foi a avaliação do vigor de sementes de feijão-caupi com a utilização do software Vigor-S (Sistema de Análise Automatizada do Vigor de Sementes). Foram utilizados sete lotes de sementes do cultivar BRS Guariba que foram submetidos aos testes de primeira contagem de germinação, envelhecimento acelerado, condutividade elétrica, emergência de plântulas, velocidade de emergência de plântulas e sistema computadorizado de imagens de plântulas (Vigor-S), avaliados em duas épocas. Os dados foram submetidos a análise da variância, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado e suas médias comparadas pelo teste de Scott-Knott (p ≤ 0,05) e a análise de correlação entre os testes de vigor tradicionalmente utilizados e as variáveis fornecidas pelo Vigor-S. A análise computadorizada de imagens de plântulas de feijão-caupi com três dias após a semeadura por meio do software Vigor-S é uma alternativa eficiente para detectar diferenças de vigor entre os lotes de sementes, de forma similar às avaliações tradicionais do vigor de sementes.

Abstract: The use of computational resources to assess the physiological potential of seeds has attracted the attention of researchers and professionals in the seed sector. The aim of this study was to evaluate the vigor of cowpea seeds using the Vigor-S software (Automated Seed Vigor Analysis System), in comparison to the information provided by traditional vigor tests that are recommended for the species. Seven seed lots of the cultivar BRS Guariba were used. They underwent germination and seed vigor assessment by testing first germination count, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, seedling emergence, speed of seedling emergence and use of Vigor-S, an automated image system for seedling assessment, in two evaluation periods. The data underwent analysis of variance, in a completely randomized design and their means were compared by the Scott-Knott test (p ≤ 0.05). An analysis was made of the correlation between the vigor tests traditionally used and the variables provided by Vigor-S. Using the Vigor-S software for automated image analysis of cowpea seedlings three days after sowing is an efficient alternative to detect differences in vigor between seed lots, similarly to traditional seed vigor evaluations.

Resumo: A análise radiográfica tem sido eficiente na identificação das principais alterações na morfologia interna de sementes, sendo cada vez mais utilizada em programas de controle de qualidade, devido à sua praticidade, objetividade e rapidez na obtenção dos resultados. Apesar dessas vantagens, ainda não existem estudos que comprovem a eficiência dessas técnicas na análise de sementes de café. Assim, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a morfologia interna de sementes de café (Coffea arabica L.) através da análise de imagens radiográficas e sua relação com o desempenho germinativo. Foram avaliadas imagens radiográficas de sementes das cultivares Bourbon e Catucaí 20/15, cada uma representada por seis lotes. As sementes foram semeadas e avaliada a emergência de plântulas, comprimento da parte aérea, diâmetro do caule e massa seca da parte aérea. As sementes de Bourbon apresentaram alta porcentagem de sementes intactas, bem como melhor desempenho na germinação dos lotes em relação ao Catucaí 20/15, que apresentou maior incidência de sementes danificadas e menor germinação. As imagens radiográficas permitiram identificar sementes com malformações, deterioração de tecidos e danos causados pela broca do café. Esta técnica de imagens não destrutiva é eficiente na identificação de sementes intactas, com potencial para germinar e produzir plântulas vigorosas.

Abstract: Radiographic analysis has been efficient in identifying the main changes in the internal morphology of seeds, being increasingly used in quality control programs due to their practicality, objectivity and speed in obtaining the results. Despite these advantages, there are still no studies proving the efficiency of these techniques for coffee seed analysis. Thereby, the aim of this research was to evaluate the internal morphology of coffee seeds (Coffea arabicaL.) through the analysis of radiographic images and their relation with germination performance. Radiographic images of seeds of the cultivars Bourbon and Catucaí 20/15, each represented by six lots, were examined and the seeds were seeded and seedling emergence, shoot length, stem diameter and shoot dry mass were evaluated. Seeds of Bourbon presented high percentage of intact seeds, as well as better performance in the germination of the lots compared to Catucaí 20/15, which presented more incidence of damaged seeds and lower germination. The radiographic images allowed identifying seeds with malformations, tissue deterioration and damage caused by the coffee borer. This non-destructive imaging technique is efficient in identifying intact seeds, with potential to germinate and produce vigorus seedlings.

Resumo: A análise de imagens digitalizadas de plântulas é cada vez mais utilizada em programas de controle de qualidade de sementes devido à sua praticidade, objetividade e rapidez na obtenção dos resultados. Apesar dessas vantagens, ainda não existem pesquisas comprovando a eficiência dessa técnica para a análise do vigor de sementes de café. Assim, esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar a eficiência da análise de imagens digitalizadas de plântulas pelo Seed Vigor Imaging System (SVIS®) na determinação do vigor de sementes de café (Coffea arabica L.), e compará-la com os testes convencionalmente empregados. Foram utilizadas sementes das cultivares Bourbon e Catucaí 20/15, cada cultivar representada por seis lotes. A pesquisa foi conduzida em duas épocas de avaliação e o vigor determinado por meio das avaliações de primeira contagem de germinação, envelhecimento acelerado, condutividade elétrica, velocidade de protrusão da raiz primária e análise de imagens digitalizadas de plântulas com o SVIS®. Tanto para a cultivar Bourbon como para a cultivar Catucaí 20/15, a análise SVIS® permitiu discriminar lotes com vigor mais baixo e mais alto (índices de vigor de 317 a 752, e 181 a 703, respectivamente), de maneira semelhante aos testes convencionais utilizados nesta pesquisa. Concluiu-se que a análise de imagens digitalizadas de plântulas com 20 dias de idade após a semeadura pelo SVIS® é eficiente na avaliação do vigor de lotes de sementes de café.

Abstract: The digital image analysis of seedlings has become largely employed in seed quality-control programs due to its feasibility, objectivity and fast results. Despite these advantages, no studies have yet demonstrated the efficiency of this technique for analyzing coffee seed vigor. The present study aimed at evaluating the efficiency of the Seed Vigor Imaging System (SVIS®) in determining the vigor of coffee seeds (Coffea arabica L.) from digital images of seedlings. Also, the results of these analyses were contrasted with conventional vigor tests. Six seed lots from each cultivar, Bourbon and Catucaí 20/15, were used. The research was conducted in two experimental times, and the seed vigor was determined by the tests of first germination count, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, primary root protrusion speed, as well as by the analysis of scanned images of seedlings, made possible by the SVIS® software. For the Bourbon and Catucaí 20/15 cultivars, the SVIS® analysis was able to discriminate lots of both high and low vigor (vigor indexes of 317 to 752, and 181 to 703, respectively). A similar outcome was obtained from the conventional tests appraised in this research. Eventually, it was possible to conclude that the digital analysis of 20-day-old seedlings by SVIS® is an efficient method to evaluate coffee seed vigor.

Resumo: O uso de procedimentos rápidos e precisos para a análise de sementes é um fator importante para a tomada de decisões nas diferentes fases da produção de sementes. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivos avaliar a ocorrência de danos internos e associar características morfológicas de sementes de milheto com o potencial fisiológico e avaliar o vigor das sementes com o uso do Seed Vigor Imaging System (SVIS®) em comparação com outros testes de vigor tradicionalmente utilizados. Oito lotes de sementes de milheto da cultivar ADR 300, foram analisados quanto à germinação, vigor (primeira contagem, envelhecimento acelerado, teste de frio e SVIS®), morfologia interna (raios X) e parâmetros morfológicos (perímetro, área e circularidade). O teste de raios X é eficiente para a avaliação da morfologia interna, permitindo a identificação de danos mecânicos, deterioração de tecidos e malformação, possibilitando estabelecer a relação entre o dano observado e o prejuízo causado à germinação. As análises com SVIS® em plântulas com dois dias de germinação são seguras para determinação do vigor de sementes de milheto. Os parâmetros de perímetro e de área estão relacionados com o potencial fisiológico de sementes.

Abstract: The use of fast and precise procedures for seed analysis is an important factor for making decisions at different stages of seed production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of internal damage and associate morphological traits of pearl millet seeds with their physiological potential, and evaluate seed vigor using the Seed Vigor Imaging System (SVIS®) compared to other traditional vigor tests. Eight seed lots of the pearl millet cultivar ADR 300 were analyzed for germination, vigor (first count, accelerated aging, cold test, and SVIS®), internal morphology (X-ray), and morphological parameters (perimeter, area, and roundness). The X-ray test is effective in evaluating the internal morphology of pearl millet seeds, allowing identification of mechanical damage and of deteriorated and malformed tissues, making it possible to establish a relationship between the damage observed and the negative effect on germination. SVIS® analyses on two-day-old seedlings are a reliable method for assessing seed vigor of pearl millet. Parameters of perimeter and area of the seeds are related to their physiological potential.

Resumo: O teste de raios X é um teste rápido, simples, não destrutivo e de alta precisão, que possibilita examinar com detalhes, a morfologia interna da semente, identificar áreas danificadas, sua localização e tipos de danos. O objetivo na presente pesquisa foi avaliar a eficiência do teste de raios X e relacionar a estrutura de sementes de Crotalaria juncea com a germinação. Foram utilizados seis lotes de sementes de Crotalaria juncea, cultivar IAC-KR1. As sementes foram submetidas aos testes de raios X e germinação. As plântulas normais, anormais e sementes mortas foram fotografadas e analisadas paralelamente às imagens radiográficas das sementes. Verificou-se que análise de imagens radiográficas possibilita a identificação de danos mecânicos, danos por percevejos e tecidos deteriorados em sementes de Crotalaria juncea, com efeitos negativos à germinação.

Abstract: The X-ray test is a simple, fast, non-destructive, and highly precise test that enables detailed examination of internal seed morphology and identification of seed damage and its location and type. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficiency of the X-ray test and the relationship between the structure of Crotalaria juncea seeds and germination. Six lots of Crotalaria juncea seeds of the IAC-KR1 cultivar were subjected to X-ray and germination tests. Normal and abnormal seedlings and dead seeds were photographed and analyzed together with the X-ray images of the seeds. Results showed that analysis of X-ray images is effective in identifying mechanical damage, stink bug damage, and deteriorated tissues in Crotalaria juncea seeds and is able to establish an association between their occurrence and germination.
