RESUMO: Com o objetivo de investigar o grau de parasitismo de duas populações de Meloidogyne exigua, o índice de galhas (IG) e o fator de reprodução (FR) de M. exigua raças 1 (Est E2) e 2 (Est E1) foram analisados em 47 progênies na geração F3:4 ou F4:5, derivadas do cruzamento entre Coffea arabica cv. Catuaí Amarelo e Híbrido de Timor. Plantas de C. canephora cv. Apoatã IAC 2258 e C. arabica cv. Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 foram usadas como padrão de resistência e de suscetibilidade, respectivamente. Os genótipos que foram classificados como resistentes ou suscetíveis pelo FR foram similarmente classificados pelo IG, mostrando uma estreita relação entre as duas metodologias para a avaliação da resistência. Os dados também indicaram que não houve diferenças quanto à virulência entre as duas populações do nematoide, uma vez que as progênies mostraram similar reação de resistência a M. exigua raça 1 e 2. De acordo com o IG, das 47 plantas-mãe avaliadas, 27 progenies (57,4%) foram classificadas como resistentes a M. exigua raças 1 e 2, com IG variando de 0,0 a 1,4 e 20 progenies (42,6%) foram suscetíveis, com IG variando de 2,6 a 4,4. Esses resultados mostraram que a maioria dos germoplasmas avaliados foi muito promissora em relação ao desenvolvimento de novas cultivares de café Arábica com resistência a M. exigua.

ABSTRACT: To investigate the degree of parasitism of two populations of Meloidogyne exigua, the gall index (GI) and the reproduction factor (RF) of M. exigua races 1 (Est E2) and 2 (Est E1) were analyzed in 47 progenies on F3:4 or F4:5 generation derived from the crossing between Coffea arabica cv. Catuaí Amarelo and Timor Hybrid. C. canephora cv. Apoatã IAC 2258 and C. arabica cv. Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 were used as resistance and susceptibility checks, respectively. The genotypes that were classified as resistant or susceptible by RF were similarly classified by GI, showing a close relationship between both methodologies. The data also indicated no differences in virulence between the nematode populations, since the progenies showed similar resistance reactions to the M. exigua races 1 and 2. According to GI from the 47 mother plants evaluated, 27 progenies (57.4%) were classified as resistant to M. exigua races 1 and 2, with GI ranging from 0.0 to 1.4 and 20 progenies (42.6%) were susceptible with GI from 2.6 to 4.4. These results showed that most of the evaluated germplasm was very promising in relation to the development of new Arabica coffee cultivars with resistance to M. exigua.

Abstract The cultivar IAC Catuaí SH3 was developed by the pedigree method, from the recombination of the coffee tree H 2077-2-5-46, of the Catuaí Vermelho germplasm, with accession IAC 1110-8, from the exotic cultivar BA10. Cultivar IAC Catuaí SH3 is high-yielding, resistant to coffee leaf rust and tolerant to drought.

ABSTRACT: Plants of Coffea arabica Icatu IAC 925 germplasm show resistance to Meloidogyne paranaensis under field conditions, but with variable rates of segregation. One mother plant, IAC 3, of Icatu IAC 925 was evaluated under controlled conditions through the reaction of its clones, obtained by somatic embryogenesis. Reproduction of nematodes in clones were compared with an open-pollinated progeny from the same mother plant, C. arabica cultivar Mundo Novo IAC 515-20, susceptible to nematodes, and Clone IAC 1, also susceptible and obtained by somatic embryogenesis. Open-pollinated progeny showed segregation to resistance and was classified as susceptible according to the reproduction factor. The average number of nematodes (eggs and J2) per gram of roots in clones was eight fold lower than that of open-pollinated progeny, and 51 fold lower than Mundo Novo IAC 515-20. Based on Seinhorst model, IAC 3 clone showed a tolerance limit of 7.7 nematodes per cm3 of soil, while in Mundo Novo the tolerance limit was 3.9 nematodes per cm3 of soil. These results revealed that clonal Arabica coffee nematode-resistant trees represent an alternative to the time consuming and expensive process inherent to conventional breeding strategies.

Abstract Cultivar IAC Obatã 4739 was derived from a cross between coffee tree IAC 1669-20-1 and cultivar Catuaí Amarelo IAC 62. It is short and high-yielding, rust-resistant, has large and yellow fruits, medium to late maturation, excellent cup quality, and responds effectively to irrigation.

Abstract IAC 125 RN was derived from a cross between the coffee cultivar Villa Sarchí and the Hibrido de Timor CIFC 832/2. The coffee trees are short and resistant to races 1 and 2 of the nematode Meloidogyne exigua and to all races of coffee rust, Hemileia vastatrix, present in Brazil. Brazil.

A reação de sete genótipos de Coffea arabica a 10 populações de Meloidogyne spp. coletadas principalmente em plantios de café no Brasil e Costa Rica foi avaliada em casa de vegetação. O inóculo consistiu de 10.000 ovos por planta. As avaliações foram realizadas 8 meses após as inoculações considerando-se a massa da matéria fresca das raízes, índices de galhas e massas de ovos, número de ovos por grama de raiz e fator de reprodução (FR). As cultivares Obatã IAC 1669-20, Sarchimor IAC 4361 e Tupi Amarelo IAC 5111 exibiram suscetibilidade às quatro populações brasileiras de M. exigua. Entretanto, cv. Tupi Vermelho IAC 1669-33 mostrou-se resistente (FR=0,7) a uma população de M. exigua proveniente de Lavras, MG, Brasil. A população de M. exigua oriunda de Bom Jesus de Itabapoana, RJ, Brasil foi altamente virulenta à cv. IAPAR 59 (FR= 165,7), portadora do gene de resistência Mex-1 e ao genótipo Paraíso (H 419-5-4-5-2) (FR=396,2). A população de Meloidogyne sp. do cafeeiro, Garça, SP, Brasil, reproduziu-se em baixos níveis (FR = 0,1 - 3,9) sobre todos os genótipos. Todas as cultivares testadas foram suscetíveis a M. incognita e M. paranaensis. A reprodução de M. mayaguensis obtida de goiabeira, PR, Brasil, foi baixa (FR = 0,0-1,6), em todos os genótipos. Entretanto, outra população obtida do cafeeiro na Costa Rica apresentou valores de FR que variaram de 0,8 a 12,4. Os resultados deste trabalho mostraram, pela primeira vez, a capacidade de uma população de M. exigua obtida em campo de superar a resistência conferida pelo gene Mex-1.

The reaction of seven genotypes of Coffea arabica to 10 Meloidogyne spp. populations collected mainly from coffee plantations in Brazil and Costa Rica was evaluated under greenhouse conditions. The inoculum consisted of 10,000 eggs per plant. Evaluations were done 8 months after inoculations considering the root fresh weight, gall and egg mass indices, number of eggs per gram of root and reproduction factor (RF). The cultivars Obatã IAC 1669-20, Sarchimor IAC 4361 and Tupi Amarelo IAC 5111 exhibited susceptibility to the four Brazilian M. exigua populations tested. However, cv. Tupi Vermelho IAC 1669-33 revealed resistance (RF value of 0.7) to the M. exigua population from Lavras, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. A population of M. exigua from Bom Jesus de Itabapoana, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, was highly virulent on cv. IAPAR 59 (RF= 165.7), bearing resistance gene Mex-1, and was also virulent on genotype Paraíso (H 419-5-4-5-2) (RF=396.2). A Meloidogyne sp. population on coffee from Garça, São Paulo State, Brazil, reproduced at low rates (RF ranging from 0.1 to 3.9) on all genotypes. All tested cultivars were susceptible to M. incognita and M. paranaensis. M. mayaguensis of guava from Paraná State, Brazil, reproduced at low rates in all coffee genotypes; however, another population of coffee, from Costa Rica, was more aggressive and showed RF value that ranged from 0.8 to 12.4. Results of this study point for the first time to the ability of a naturally occurring M. exigua population to overcome the resistance conferred by the Mex-1 gene.

Entre as espécies de nematóides de galhas mais danosas ao cafeeiro, Meloidogyne exigua, M. paranaensis, M. incognita, M. arabicida, M. izalcoensis e M. mayaguensis são as que causam os maiores problemas em áreas de cultivo de café no Brasil e países da América Latina. A reação de resistência a essas seis espécies foi estudada na progênie H 419-5-4-5-2, obtida do cruzamento artificial entre a cultivar Catuaí Amarelo IAC 30 com a seleção de Híbrido de Timor UFV 445-46. As genótipos foram inoculados com 6.000 ovos/planta e o experimento foi conduzido no delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com 10 repetições para cada espécie de Meloidogyne e cada genótipo de cafeeiro. A avaliação foi realizada 240 dias após a inoculação. O Fator de Reprodução (FR= População Final/6000) foi usado como variável para se avaliar a resistência. M. exigua causou galhas arredondadas típicas, sobretudo nas raízes novas. M. incognita, M. paranaensis e M. arabicida causaram engrossamento nas raízes, descolamento cortical e rachaduras em várias partes do sistema radicular.Nenhum sintoma foi observado para M. mayaguensis. M. izalcoensis causou galhas pequenas, a maioria na extremidade das raízes novas. As massas de ovos foram produzidas externamente e em grande número. O genótipo IAC 144 (testemunha) foi suscetível (FR>1.0) a todas espécies de Meloidogyne, exceto a M. mayaguensis. Esse isolado mostrou-se um parasita fraco para o cafeeiro. A progênie H 419-5-4-5-2 foi resistente a M. exigua e M. mayaguensis (FR<1) e suscetível a M. incognita, M. paranaensis, M. arabicida e M. izalcoensis.

Among the most damaging root-knot nematode species, Meloidogyne exigua, M. paranaensis, M. incognita, M. arabicida, M. izalcoensis and M. mayaguensis are major agronomic constraints in coffee-growing areas in Brazil and other Latin American countries. The resistance reaction to those six species was studied for the H 419-5-4-5-2 progeny, derived from the artificial hybridization between Catuaí Amarelo 'IAC 30' x Timor Hybrid UFV 445-46 selection. The Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 genotype was used as susceptibility control for Meloidogyne spp. The genotypes were inoculated with 6,000 eggs/plant and the experiment was set up in a completely randomized design, replicated 10 times for each Meloidogyne species and genotype. The evaluation was performed at 240 days after inoculation and the reproduction factor (RF= Final population/6000) was used as the variable to evaluate resistance. M. exigua caused typical rounded galls mostly on new roots, and egg-masses were produced mostly in the cortex under the root epidermis. M. incognita, M. paranaensis and M. arabicida caused swollen roots, peeling and cracking of cortical root tissue. No symptoms were observed for M. mayaguensis. M. izalcoensis induced very small galls, mostly on the extremity of new roots. Egg-masses were produced outside the roots in large quantities. The genotype IAC 144 was susceptible (FR>1.0) to all Meloidogyne spp. studied, except to M. mayaguensis. The nematode isolate used in this experiment seems to be a weak parasite for coffee. The H 419-5-4-5-2 progeny was resistant to M. exigua (FR<1) and susceptible to M. incognita, M. paranaensis, M. arabicida and M. izalcoensis.

A intensidade de infestação pelo bicho-mineiro, Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Méneville) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) foi investigada nas cultivares Obatã IAC 1669-20 e Tupi IAC 1669-33, com resistência à ferrugem das folhas do cafeeiro, Hemileia vastatrix Berk. et Br., e Ouro Verde Amarelo IAC 4397, suscetível à doença, em ensaios de campo, localizados em Campinas (SP), Brasil. A incidência de ferrugem e a ocorrência de inimigos naturais da praga, assim como o enfolhamento das plantas, foram também observados nas três cultivares. As curvas de flutuação populacional obtidas para Obatã IAC 1669-20 e Tupi IAC 1669-33 revelaram maior incidência do bicho-mineiro entre abril e novembro. Já na cultivar Ouro Verde Amarelo IAC 4397, observaram-se dois picos de infestação, sendo o primeiro em abril-maio e o segundo em agosto-setembro. No entanto, a elevada percentagem de folhas minadas nas cultivares Tupi IAC 1669-33 e Obatã IAC 1669-20 em relação à Ouro Verde Amarelo IAC 4397 não é evidência de maior suscetibilidade à praga, mas sim devido à maior retenção foliar dessas cultivares, em conseqüência da resistência à ferrugem das folhas observada em ambas. De maneira oposta, na cultivar Ouro Verde Amarelo IAC 4397, os sintomas de ataque do bicho-mineiro ocorreram em menor nível especialmente devido a maior queda de folhas. Com base nas diferenças observadas entre as cultivares, sugere-se a adoção de estratégias distintas de manejo da praga.

The intensity of infestation of leaf-miner, Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Méneville) was investigated in coffee cultivars Obatã IAC 1669-20 and Tupi IAC 1669-33, both resistant to the leaf rust agent, Hemileia vastatrix Berk. et Br., and Ouro Verde Amarelo IAC 4397, susceptible to this coffee disease, at field assays in Campinas, SP, Brazil. The incidence of coffee rust and presence of natural enemies, as well as the plant leafiness, were also observed. In Obatã IAC 1669-20 and Tupi IAC 1669-33 cultivars the curves of population fluctuation revealed high occurrence of the coffee leaf miner between April and November. However analysis in the Ouro Verde Amarelo IAC 4397 cultivar demonstrated the occurrence of two peaks of infestation, the first in April-May and the second in August-September. Also, a higher index of damaged leaves was observed in Tupi IAC 1669-33 and Obatã IAC 1669-20 cultivars in comparison to Ouro Verde Amarelo IAC 4397. This result may not indicate a higher susceptibility to L. coffeella of those cultivars, but otherwise could be the result of a better leaf retention, as a consequence of the leaf rust resistance exhibited by both cultivars. On the other hand, the damage observed in leaves from Ouro Verde Amarelo IAC 4397 cultivar is less frequent, probably in consequence of the high rate of leaf falling. Based on these observed differences, distinct strategies for this pest management are suggested.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar os danos causados por Meloidogyne exigua e M. incognita raça 1 a mudas de cafeeiros (Coffea spp.) Coffea arabica cv. Mundo Novo (LCP 515-20) e de C. canephora cv. Robusta (C 2258). O ensaio foi desenvolvido em casa de vegetação, em vasos de um litro, contendo uma plântula cada um. Aos vinte dias após o transplante, as plântulas foram inoculadas separadamente com 0, 2.000, 4.000 e 8.000 ovos de cada nematóide. As populações dos parasitos nas raízes e alguns parâmetros de crescimento das plantas foram avaliados aos 150 dias da inoculação. Verificou-se que M. incognita raça 1 foi mais patogênica que M. exigua ao cultivar Mundo Novo. O cafeeiro C 2258 comportou-se como hospedeiro não eficiente (FR < 1) de M. incognita raça 1, embora o crescimento das plantas tenha sido significativamente reduzido. M. exigua mostrou-se incapaz de parasitar o cafeeiro C 2258.

In order to evaluate the damage caused by Meloidogyne incognita race 1 and M. exigua to C. arabica cv. Mundo Novo and C. canephora cv. Robusta (C 2258) an experiment was established under greenhouse conditions, with 0, 2,000, 4,000, and 8,000 eggs as inicial inoculum, in a completely randomized design with one plant per plot. The plants were inoculated 20 days after transplanting and nematode population and some growth parameters were evaluated 150 days later. M. incognita race 1 showed to be more pathogenic to 'Mundo Novo' than M. exigua. The selection C 2258 was not an efficient host for M. incognita race 1, although reproduction occurred and significant reduction in the shoot dry weight of the inoculated plants was determined; M. exigua did not infect this cultivar.

Objetivou-se, com o presente estudo, avaliar o comportamento de quatro progênies do cultivar Catuaí Amarelo e três do Catuaí Vermelho de Coffea arabica em relação aos cultivares Caturra Amarelo e Mundo Novo da mesma espécie, na Estação Experimental do Instituto Agronômico, em Pindorama. Analisaram-se a produção total e as produções acumuladas a cada dois anos e os valores de rendimento (relação café cereja/beneficiado), a peneira média, a porcentagem de frutos desprovidos de sementes (porcentagem de chochos), o tipo das sementes e o peso de cem sementes tipo chato (grãos normais). Os resultados da produção total em um período de dezoito anos consecutivos indicaram que a progênie de Catuaí Amarelo CH 2077-2-5-62 se revelou a mais produtiva, superando inclusive o padrão Mundo Novo. A linhagem de Caturra Amarelo (LC 476) apresentou as mais baixas produções. Analisando-se as produções acumuladas a cada dois anos e a total, verificou-se a possibilidade de uma avaliação precoce nesse material. As características de frutos e sementes analisadas forneceram valores considerados normais para um café de bom padrão, possibilitando a recomendação do plantio dos cultivares Catuaí Amarelo e Catuaí Vermelho na região nordeste do Estado de São Paulo.

Four progenies of the Catuaí Amarelo and three of the Catuaí Vermelho cultivars of Coffea arabica L. were evaluated for yield, as well as fruits and seed characteristics in a trial carried out at Pindorama Experimental Station. Caturra Amarelo and Mundo Novo cultivars of the same specie were used as control. Latin square 9 x 9 design was used. Each plot had six double plants (two plants per hole) planted 3 x 2 m in apart. Individual plant yield was recorded throughout eighteen years (1971-1988). It was analysed also the relation of ripe fruit weight to clean coffee weight; percentage of empty fruits; percentage of flat, peaberry and elephant beans; seed size and weight of 100 seeds for each individual plant. The Catuaí Amarelo progeny CH 2077-2-5-62 gave the highest total yield and Caturra Amarelo LC 476 the lowest one. Yield oscillation was similar for the highest yielding Catuaí progenies and the Mundo Novo and Caturra Amarelo standards. The results indicated that the Catuaí Amarelo and Catuaí Vermelho can be successfully grown at the Pindorama region.

Estudaram-se diversos parâmetros agronômicos em progênies oriundas de potinização aberta e de hibridações envolvendo os cafeeiros C 1195-5-6-1 e C 1195-5-6-2, resistentes ao bicho-mineiro (Perileucoptera coffeella). Ambos apresentam florescimento abundante e precocidade de maturação, características da espécie Coffea racemosa, da qual se originaram por retrocruzamentos com C. arabica. Hibridações desses dois cafeeiros foram realizadas com os cafés Icatu, Catimor, Híbrido de Timor e Catuaí. Os três primeiros, derivados de retrocruzamentos de C. canephora com C. arabica, são resistentes ao agente da ferrugem (Hemileia vastatrix) e, o último, cultivar de grande expressão econômica, tem porte reduzido e elevada capacidade produtiva. A análise das progênies realizada em quatro ensaios revelou que todos esses atributos, presentes em tão diverso germoplasma, são geneticamente transmissíveis e se encontram nas progênies investigadas, em associações diversas. Os dados de produção e o fato de não existirem associações antagônicas entre esses atributos sugerem a possibilidade do desenvolvimento de cultivares produtivos, resistentes ao bicho-mineiro e com outras características desejáveis, principalmente resistência ao agente da ferrugem.

Several agronomic characteristics were studied in progenies from open pollinations and hybridizations of coffee trees C1195-5-6-1 and C1195-5-6-2. Both, resistant to the leaf miner (Perileucoptera coffeella), bloom profusely and are early ripening, characteristics of Coffea racemosa from which they originated via backcross to C. arabica. Hybrids of these two individuals with Icatu, Catimor, Híbrido de Timor and Catuaí cultivars were evaluated. The first three cultvars, C. canephora x C. arabica backcross derivatives, are resistant to the leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) and the last a leading C. arabica cultivar has short stature and high yield capacity. The study of the progenies, undertaken in four experiments revealed that all these attributes, of such a diverse germoplasm, are genetically inheritable and are present in the progenies in different associations. The yield data and the fact that there are no antagonistic correlations among those attributes suggest that is possible to develop high yielding leaf miner resistant cultivars with other additional favorable traits, mainly resistance to leaf rust.

Plântulas dos cultivares Mundo Novo, de Coffea arabica, suscetível, e Apoatã, de Coffea canephora, resistente, foram inoculadas com ovos de Meloidogyne incognita raça 2, e avaliadas em duas fases do ciclo de desenvolvimento do parasito, isto é, na de penetração de larvas e na de fêmeas com ovos. Não foram observadas diferenças quanto ao desenvolvimento radicular e da parte aérea entre plântulas inoculadas e não inoculadas, nas duas avaliações. Nos dois cultivares, houve aumento no teor de fenóis nas plântulas inoculadas na primeira avaliação, e, na segunda, apesar de os valores terem sido maiores, foram iguais entre plântulas inoculadas e seus respectivos controles. O 'Mundo Novo' apresentou sempre maior conteúdo de fenóis que o 'Apoatã' e somente houve aumento na sua atividade de peroxidase na primeira avaliação. Na segunda, a atividade dessa enzima foi maior do que na primeira, porém igual entre plântulas inoculadas e seus controles. O 'Apoatã' sempre teve maior atividade de peroxidase, e apenas houve aumento da atividade de sua polifenoloxidase na primeira avaliação, sendo que nesse cultivar a atividade dessa enzima sempre foi maior do que no 'Mundo Novo'. Cromatografias em camada delgada de celulose mostraram que em nenhum deles houve variações quantitativas de fenóis entre as plantas inoculadas e não inoculadas. Ambos, 'Mundo Novo' e 'Apoatã', apresentaram 23 compostos fenólicos em comum e, nove e onze não comuns respectivamente.

Seedlings of two coffee cultivars were inoculated with the nematode Meloidogyne incognita: cv. Mundo Novo (susceptible) of Coffea arabica and cv. Apoatã (resistant) of C. canephora. During the larval penetration and adult female phases of the parasite, evaluations were made on phenol content, peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase activities. In the two evaluations, no differences were observed in roots and shoots growth among inoculated and non inoculated seedling. For both cultivars, only in the first phase infected seedlings showed an increase in phenols as compared to their counterparts not inoculated. However, phenol values were higher in the second than in the first phase. The cv. Mundo Novo had always higher phenols content than Apoatã. Only inoculated seedlings of the cv. Mundo Novo showed an increase of peroxidase activities in the first phase; but, both cultivars presented higher peroxidase activities in the second phase as compared to the first. Apoatã seedlings had always higher peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase activities than Mundo Novo. Infected seedlings of the cv. Apoatã showed in the first phase, only, an increase in polyphenoloxidase activity. Thin-layer chromatograms of phenolic extracts did not present any difference among inoculated and non-inoculated seedlings. Twenty three spots on the chromatograms were common to both cultivars, except that Apoatã had a further nine spots not found in Mundo Novo and the later had a further eleven not found in the former.

Procurou-se, no presente trabalho, observar a eficiência dos inseticidas sistêmicos granulados aldicarbe a 10%, carbofurã a 5% e dissulfotom a 2,5 e 10%, em dois tipos de solo, no controle das ninfas móveis das cigarras do cafeeiro, predominantemente Quesada gigas em lavouras instaladas nos municípios de Franca e ltirapuã, SP. Utilizaram-se doses desses inseticidas próximas às recomendadas para o controle do bicho-mineiro, as quais proporcionaram uma redução média de 67,5 e 54,1% na população das ninfas móveis da praga, respectivamente, em solo arenoso e argiloso. Esses inseticidas, quando aplicados por quatro anos consecutivos, proporcionaram um aumento médio de produção de 175, 227 e 246% para o aldicarbe, cárbofurã e dissulfotom respectivamente.

The present research was conducted to evaluate the efficiency and yield increase by granular systemic insecticides to control cicades, mostly Quesada gigas, in two infested coffee plantations: one grown in sandy and the other in clay soils in the State of São Paulo, Brasil. The active ingredients tested were aldicarbe, at 10%, carbofurã, at 5% and dissulfotom, at 2.5 and 10%, applied once in dosages normally used for coffee leaf miner control. An average reduction of 67.5% on mobile nymphs population was observed in the sandy soil and 54.1% in the clay soil plantations. The effect of the above treatments on productivity of coffee was tested over a four year period (1981-1985), and the percent yield increase was on the average: 175, 227 and 246% from aldicarbe, carbofurã and dissulfotom, respectively.
