RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência das densidades de plantio sobre o crescimento e forma das árvores de Eucalyptus urophylla, implantadas em distintas densidades de plantio na região central de Mato Grosso do Sul. Para tal, foi disposto, em área experimental da Embrapa Gado de Corte, um talhão segundo um plano experimental em roda de competição proposto por Nelder (1962), apresentando 16 densidades de plantio correspondentes a: 1313, 1167, 1037, 922, 819, 728, 647, 576, 512, 455, 404, 359, 319, 284, 252 e 224 árvores ha-1. As variáveis mensuradas aos 68 meses foram: DAP, altura total, altura de inserção e comprimento de copa, volume individual e por área, conicidade e fator de forma. Os dados foram processados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado sendo considerados como tratamentos as densidades de plantio. Por meio dos resultados, foi possível observar que quanto menor a densidade de plantio maior os valores encontrados para DAP, comprimento de copa, volume individual e conicidade. Verificou-se uma relação inversa entre a densidade de plantio e altura, inserção de copa e volume por área. Para altura, as densidades de plantio médias apresentaram resultados maiores, que das densidades das extremidades, sendo esse parâmetro mais influenciado pela bordadura do plantio. O fator de forma não foi afetado pela densidade de plantio. Com base nos resultados obtidos, conclui-se que diferentes densidades de plantio afetam diretamente o crescimento e variáveis dendrométricas.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of planting densities on the growth and shape of Eucalyptus urophylla trees, implanted in different planting densities in the central region of Mato Grosso do Sul. Therefore, a field in an experimental area of Embrapa Gado de Corte was displayed according to an experimental plan in competition wheel proposed by Nelder (1962), presenting 16 planting densities corresponding to: 1313, 1167, 1037, 922, 819, 728, 647, 576, 512, 455, 404, 359, 319, 284, 252 and 224 trees ha-1. The variables measured in 68 months were: DBH, total height, insertion height and crown length, individual volume and by area, taper and form factor. The data was processed in a completely randomized design with planting densities considered as treatments. It was possible to observe through the results that the lower the planting density, the higher the values found for DBH, crown length, individual volume and taper. Also, there was an inverse relationship between planting density and height, canopy insertion and volume per area. In terms of height, the medium planting densities showed higher results than the densities of the extremities, being this parameter more influenced by the border of the planting. The form factor was not affected by the planting density. Based on the results achieved, the conclusion was that different planting densities directly affect growth and dendrometric variables.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the influence of drip irrigation and micro-sprinkler on the dendrometric parameters of two Eucalyptus hybrids at 45 months. The experiment was carried out in Aquidauana, MS, using an experimental design of randomized blocks in split plot scheme. The dendrometric attributes of the trees evaluated were height, diameter at breast height, volume, shape factor, taper, and dry mass production. The Grancam hybrid has the highest growth in height, and the Urograndis has the largest diameter at breast height. Drip irrigation provides an increase of 36.7% in the wood volume of eucalyptus hybrids when compared to those that were not irrigated.

ABSTRACT This study aims to bring forward helpful anatomical characteristics to assist in the identification of Cordia goeldiana Huber, Cordia bicolor A.DC. and Cordia alliodora (Ruiz & Pav.) Cham., all of them commercialized by the popular name of “freijó” in the Amazon region. The anatomical study of the woods followed the orientations of the International Association of Wood Anatomists - IAWA Committee. The helpful wood’s characteristics found to distinguish the species were: the different types of growth layers; type of axial parenchyma; presence of sheath cells involving the rays; frequency and diameter of the vessel elements; lumen diameter; and fiber wall fraction. Quantitatively, the applied multivariate techniques were helpful, once they have evidenced greater similarities between C. goeldiana and C. alliodora distinguishing themselves from C. bicolor mainly because of the rays’ height (μm). From the anatomical study of the woods it was possible to differentiate the species. We were able to see important anatomical patterns that could be helpful in the macroscopic and microscopic identification of the woods of C. goeldiana, C. bicolor and C. alliodora.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os rendimentos da carbonização da casca do coco babaçu em função da temperatura final, bem como as perdas energéticas envolvidas nesse processo. Foram utilizadas conjuntamente as três camadas constituintes do coco babaçu, ou seja, o epicarpo, o mesocarpo e o endocarpo. O material foi carbonizado tendo-se considerado as seguintes temperaturas finais: 450, 550, 650, 750 e 850ºC. Foram avaliados: rendimentos em carvão vegetal e energético, líquido pirolenhoso, gases não condensáveis e carbono fixo. O uso da casca do babaçu pode ser altamente viável para a produção de carvão vegetal. O rendimento em carvão vegetal da carbonização da casca do coco babaçu foi maior que o relatado na literatura para a carbonização da madeira de Eucalyptus, ao se considerar temperatura final de 450ºC. Os rendimentos em carvão e energético diminuíram de forma mais acentuada em temperaturas mais baixas, com tendência de estabilização em temperaturas mais elevadas. Os rendimentos energéticos obtidos podem ser considerados satisfatórios, com perdas entre 45 e 52% (com base no poder calorífico superior) e entre 43 e 49% (com base no poder calorífico inferior) para as temperaturas de 450 a 850ºC, respectivamente. Os rendimentos em carbono fixo e líquido pirolenhoso não são afetados pela temperatura final de carbonização.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the carbonization yield of babassu nutshell as affected by final temperature, as well as the energy losses involved in the process. Three layers constituting the babassu nut, that is, the epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp, were used together. The material was carbonized, considering the following final temperatures: 450, 550, 650, 750, and 850ºC. The following were evaluated: energy and charcoal yields, pyroligneous liquid, non-condensable gases, and fixed carbon. The use of babassu nutshell can be highly feasible for charcoal production. The yield of charcoal from babassu nutshell carbonization was higher than that reported in the literature for Eucalyptus wood carbonization, considering the final temperature of 450ºC. Charcoal and energy yields decreased more sharply at lower temperatures, with a tendency to stabilize at higher temperatures. The energy yields obtained can be considered satisfactory, with losses between 45 and 52% (based on higher heating value) and between 43 and 49% (based on lower heating value) at temperatures ranging from 450 to 850ºC, respectively. Yields in fixed carbon and pyroligneous liquid are not affected by the final carbonization temperature.

Neste trabalho, objetivou-se selecionar clones de Eucalyptus com finalidades energéticas, utilizando as técnicas multivariadas de componentes principais e de agrupamento. Foram avaliados 25 clones de Eucalyptus aos 54 meses de idade. Foram determinados os teores dos componentes elementares (C, H e O), de lignina, extrativos totais e cinzas, a densidade básica, o poder calorífico superior e a densidade energética. As duas técnicas multivariadas empregadas para a avaliação e seleção dos clones de Eucalyptus para a produção de bioenergia foram eficientes, sendo observadas similaridades entre os grupos de biomassa formados por elas. Pela análise de agrupamento, foram obtidos cinco grupos distintos, sendo que o grupo um, formado pelo clone U060, possui maior potencial como fonte de energia. Os clones G084, G122, G023 e U108 possuem menor desempenho energético.

This research aimed to select Eucalyptus clones for bioenergy production by using of two multivariate techniques, principal component analysis and cluster analysis. The analysis evaluated 25 clones of Eucalyptus at age 54 months. Determinations included the concentrations of elemental components (C, H and O), lignin, total extractives and ash, as well as basic density, higher heating value and energy density. Both multivariate methods being used to evaluate and select clones of Eucalyptus for bioenergy production proved effective, there being similarities between the biomass groups formed by them. The cluster analysis revealed five distinct groupings, out of which cluster one, formed by clone U060, was found to have greater potential as a source of energy. Clones G084, G122, G023 and U108 had poorer energy performance.

Nowadays the interest in polymeric composites reinforced with vegetal natural fibers in substitution for manufactured fibers is increasing. This is due to the fact that vegetal fibers are less abrasive, biodegradable, present low density and excellent mechanical and thermal properties. Several vegetal fibers have been used for various types of composites among which the bamboo differs from these fibers in being widely used for cellulose and paper industrial production. This paper presents the results of recent researches about fiber and pulps of bamboo, which were submitted to several types of tests, aiming at a better understanding of their properties. The main objective of this study was to physical-chemical characterize fiber and bamboo pulps, disseminating their properties and maximizing their use in polymeric applications. Most of the samples were analyzed and characterized using the methods recommended by the American Society for Testing and Materials, ASTM and the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, TAPPI. The results show that the refined pulp was more suitable to be used as a reinforcing agent in polimeric composites instead of the unrefined pulp and natural fiber.

Atualmente é crescente o interesse pelos compósitos poliméricos reforçados com fibras naturais vegetais em substituição às fibras manufaturadas. Isto se deve ao fato das fibras vegetais serem menos abrasivas, biodegradáveis, apresentar baixa densidade e excelentes propriedades mecânicas e térmicas. Várias fibras vegetais vêm sendo utilizadas nos mais variados tipos de compósitos, dentre as quais as de bambu se diferenciam por serem largamente utilizadas na produção industrial de celulose e papel. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de recentes pesquisas envolvendo fibra e polpas de bambu, as quais foram submetidas a vários tipos de ensaios, visando um maior conhecimento de suas propriedades. O principal objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar físico-quimicamente fibra e polpas, difundindo suas propriedades e maximizando sua utilização em aplicações poliméricas. Grande parte das amostras foram analisadas e caracterizadas utilizando as metodologias preconizadas pela American Society for Testing and Materials, ASTM e pela Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, TAPPI. Os resultados mostram que a polpa refinada se apresentou mais adequada para ser utilizada como agente de reforço em compósitos poliméricos em detrimento da polpa sem refino e fibra natural.

Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, avaliar a precisão da utilização de variáveis não destrutivas na inferência sobre a densidade básica das madeiras de Eucalyptus grandis e Eucalyptus urophylla. Foram utilizados 27 clones de Eucalyptus urophylla e 22 clones de Eucalyptus grandis oriundos de teste clonal implantado em Martinho Campos, Minas Gerais. Após a avaliação por técnicas não destrutivas de resistografia e penetração por um pino à pressão constante (Pilodyn®), os indivíduos foram abatidos e retirados discos a 2, 10, 30, 50 e 70% da altura comercial, além destes, foram extraídos também discos a 1,30 metros do solo. A densidade básica da madeira foi determinada pelo método de imersão em água. Os clones avaliados apresentaram valores em densidade básica variando de 0,412 a 0,609 g.cm-3 aos 42 meses e 0,408 a 0,664 g.cm-3 aos 54 meses. Os clones de Eucalyptus urophylla apresentaram densidade básica média superior em relação aos de Eucalyptus grandis. A variável amplitude apresentou melhor relação com a densidade básica comparada a penetração por um pino à pressão constante. A avaliação não destrutiva pode ser utilizada em uma pré-seleção massal de materiais genéticos, destinando-os posteriormente a uma avaliação mais precisa e confiável.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of nondestructive variables in inferring basic density of wood from Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophylla. A total of 27 clones of Eucalyptus urophylla and 22 clones of Eucalyptus grandis were used, sourced from a clonal trial set up in Martinho Campos, Minas Gerais. After evaluation using nondestructive techniques of resistography and pin penetration at a constant pressure (Pilodyn®), individuals were felled and disks were removed from the 2%, 10%, 30%, 50% and 70% portions of the merchantable height section, and also from the portion 1.30 m above ground level. Basic density was determined by the water immersion method. Values of basic density ranged from 0.412 to 0.609 g.cm-3 for clones at age 42 months and from 0.408 to 0.664 g.cm-3 for clones at age 54 months. The clones of Eucalyptus urophylla provided higher values of average basic density in relation to Eucalyptus grandis. The variable 'amplitude' had better correlation with basic density in comparison with pin penetration at a constant pressure. Nondestructive evaluation can be used in mass preselection of genetic materials, prior to subjecting them to a more accurate, reliable evaluation.

A análise de correlação canônica é um procedimento estatístico multivariado que permite verificar as correlações lineares existentes entre dois grupos ou conjuntos de variáveis (X e Y). No presente trabalho, objetivou-se realizar a análise de correlação canônica para verificar as associações existentes entre o grupo formado pelos teores de lignina, extrativos totais e o poder calorífico superior (PCS) de resíduos lignocelulósicos com o grupo formado pelos teores de seus componentes elementares (carbono, hidrogênio, nitrogênio e enxofre). Foram utilizados oito resíduos lignocelulósicos: maravalhas de eucalipto, pinus e cedro australiano; bagaço de cana; polpa celulósica residual de bambu; casca e pergaminho de café; resíduos da colheita do milho e casca de arroz. Apenas a primeira função canônica mostrou-se significativa, entretanto apresentou baixo R² canônico. Encontrou-se uma tendência de altos teores de carbono, hidrogênio e enxofre e baixos teores de nitrogênio estarem associados com altos teores de extrativos totais dos resíduos lignocelulósicos avaliados. Esses resultados preliminares mostram que as correlações canônicas não foram eficientes para explicar as correlações existentes entre os componentes químicos elementares e os teores de lignina e o poder calorífico superior.

Canonical correlation analysis is a statistical multivariate procedure that allows analyzing linear correlation that may exist between two groups or sets of variables (X and Y). This paper aimed to provide canonical correlation analysis between a group comprised of lignin and total extractives contents and higher heating value (HHV) with a group of elemental components (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur) for lignocellulosic wastes. The following wastes were used: eucalyptus shavings; pine shavings; red cedar shavings; sugar cane bagasse; residual bamboo cellulose pulp; coffee husk and parchment; maize harvesting wastes; and rice husk. Only the first canonical function was significant, but it presented a low canonical R² . High carbon, hydrogen and sulfur contents and low nitrogen contents seem to be related to high total extractives contents of the lignocellulosic wastes. The preliminary results found in this paper indicate that the canonical correlations were not efficient to explain the correlations between the chemical elemental components and lignin contents and higher heating values.

ABSTRACT The purposes of this research were: a) to determine the longitudinal variation standard of basic density; b) to evaluate the main longitudinal sampling methods and; c) to propose new alternatives of representative longitudinal sampling of the average basic density. Disks were obtained from the tree basis, in the 1.30 m (DBH) position, and at every meter from this point until commercial height. Explanatory linear models of basic density longitudinal variation were adjusted. The polynomial model of fifth order was the one that better explained the longitudinal variation of basic density. This model was used for the prediction of basic density at relative heights from 1 to 100% of the commercial height. The position at 79% of the commercial height was the most precise among the ones evaluated. The sampling alternatives A (5, 25, 27, 78 and 79%), B (5, 26, 27, 78 and 79%) and C (5, 26, 27, 78 and 80%) were more adequate to the samplings commonly used.

RESUMO Os objetivos desse trabalho foram: a) determinar o padrão de variação longitudinal da densidade básica; b) avaliar os principais métodos de amostragem longitudinal; e c) propor novas alternativas amostrais longitudinais representativas da densidade básica média. Foram retirados discos da base, 1,30 m (DAP) e, a partir deste ponto, de metro em metro até a altura comercial. Foram ajustados modelos lineares explicativos da variação longitudinal da densidade básica. O modelo polinomial de 5º ordem foi o que melhor explicou o padrão de variação longitudinal da densidade básica. Esse modelo foi utilizado na predição da densidade básica nas alturas relativas de 1 a 100% da altura comercial. A posição de 79% da altura comercial foi a mais precisa dentre as avaliadas. As alternativas amostrais A (5, 25, 27, 78 e 79%), B (5, 26, 27, 78 e 79%) e C (5, 26, 27, 78 e 80%) foram mais adequadas às amostragens comumente utilizadas.

A região do cerrado tem se mostrado como importante provedora na crescente demanda por bens de consumo de origem vegetal, animal ou agroindustrial. No entanto, ainda são insuficientes os estudos relativos à vegetação desse bioma. Tal fato tem causado dificuldades na utilização dessas espécies, seja como opção de uso econômico, ou como forma de recomposição e recuperação de áreas devastadas. Em razão da carência de informações referentes às espécies do cerrado, este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de coletar informações sobre a constituição química e a densidade básica da madeira de raiz, fuste e galho de Stryphnodendron adstringens (barbatimão). Para tanto, utilizaram-se materiais coletados na raiz e ao longo do fuste e galho de três espécimes de barbatimão. Verificaram-se tendências de incremento dos teores de holocelulose no sentido da raiz para o fuste e galho. O contrário aconteceu com o teor de lignina e extrativos. O teor de cinzas teve seu menor valor na posição referente ao fuste. As densidades básicas entre raiz, fuste e galho não se diferenciaram estatisticamente.

The Cerrado region has been a major provider to meet the growing demand of vegetal, animal or agribusiness consumer goods. However, studies on the vegetation of this biome are still incipient and that has been preventing use of Cerrado species, whether for economic purposes or as a way of restoring and recovering devastated areas. Due to lack of information concerning species of the Cerrado biome, this study was conducted in an attempt to gather information about the chemical constitution and basic wood density of the root, stem and branch portions of Stryphnodendron adstringens, also known as 'barbatimão'. To that end, material was collected from the root and along stem and branch portions of three specimens of barbatimão. An increasing tendency was observed in holocellulose contents in the root-to-stem and root-to-branch direction. The opposite occurred with lignin and extractive contents. The lowest ash content was found in the stem portion. Values of basic density did not differ statistically between the root, stem and branch portions.
