Abstract The aim of this study was to use bibliometric techniques to provide a longitudinal view of the evolution over more than 50 years of the literature on esophageal cancer without focusing on a specific area. The Web of Science Core Collection database was searched for published articles on esophageal neoplasm. Different aspects of the articles were analyzed - country, journal, authors, keywords, and topics. The search returned 24,215 articles - the journal Diseases of the Esophagus present the most number of manuscripts (n = 858), followed by Annals of Surgical Oncology (n = 475).The most cited article was one by van Hagen et al. (2012) (2,807 citations). The most prevalent topic was oncology (n = 10,448), followed by surgery (n = 4,944). Most articles were original research (n = 22,697), mainly with the basic science study design and published by institutions in China. The analysis of the variables chosen, identified China as the country with the highest number of articles and showed that authors and institutions in Asia stand out when it comes to production of scientific information on esophageal cancer. 5 area neoplasm keywords topics 24215 24 215 24,21 n 858, 858 , 858) 475.The 475The 475 .The al 2012 (2012 2,807 2807 2 807 (2,80 citations. citations . citations) 10,448, 10448 10,448 10 448 10,448) 4,944. 4944 4,944 4 944 4,944) 22,697, 22697 22,697 22 697 22,697) chosen 2421 21 24,2 85 47 201 (201 2,80 280 80 (2,8 1044 10,44 1 44 494 4,94 94 2269 22,69 69 242 24, 8 20 (20 2,8 28 (2, 104 10,4 49 4,9 9 226 22,6 6 (2 2, 10, 4, 22, (
