Resumo Os problemas relacionados à combustão da biomassa e o seu impacto sobre a eficiência das caldeiras dependem das características do combustível e do projeto e operação dos equipamentos. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo mapear os problemas associados à geração, coleta e tratamento das cinzas da biomassa florestal queimada em caldeiras industriais. O estudo foi realizado em uma usina termelétrica que gera 28MW/hora e usa biomassa florestal como combustível. Foram feitas três coletas de cavacos de madeira, antes da entrada na fornalha da caldeira e em quatro locais de passagem de cinzas na caldeira, onde ocorre o tratamento e recolhimento para disposição final deste resíduo da biomassa. Parte do mix de biomassa foi calcinado em laboratório para comparação entre os pontos de amostragem com as propriedades da biomassa. As propriedades analisadas foram: composição química elementar inorgânica; teste de fusão das cinzas e a potencialidade de ocorrência de problemas por meio dos índices de: deposição das cinzas (R); escória (Rs); incrustação (Fu); viscosidade (Sr) e álcali (Al). Os compostos presentes em maior concentração nas cinzas foram os óxidos de silício, alumínio, ferro, cálcio, potássio e magnésio. A temperatura de fusão das cinzas foi entre 1261°C e 1385°C. O mapeamento dos problemas apontou baixos riscos de formação de escória e viscosidade. O índice de incrustação foi alto para o decantador (0,69) e o readler teve médio potencial de viscosidade (1,11). A formação de álcali ocorreu no readler e decantador, provocando corrosões nestes pontos. Os cálculos dos índices de deposição foram capazes de expressar os problemas que ocorrem na queima da biomassa florestal em caldeira.

Abstract The nature of the problems associated with the biomass combustion in boilers and their impact on the performance of combustion equipment depends on the fuel’s characteristics, and the design and operation of the combustion equipment. Thus, the objective of this study was to map the problems associated with the generation and treatment of forest biomass ashes in an industrial boiler. The study was developed in a thermoelectric plant with a production of 28MW / hour originated from the combustion of residual forest biomass. Three biomass samples were collected before entering the boiler’s furnace and at four flowing points inside the boiler, where the treatment and recovery for the final disposal of the biomass ashes occur. To compare the collection points in the boiler and the biomass properties, part of the samples were calcined in the laboratory. The analysed properties were: inorganic elemental chemical composition; the ashes fusion test and the potentiality of occurrence of problems through the following indices: ash deposition (R); slag (Rs); inlay (Fu); viscosity (Sr) and alkali (Al). As for the elemental chemical composition, the compounds with the highest concentrations were silicon, aluminum, iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium oxides. The melting temperature of the ashes was between 1261 ° C and 1385 ° C at the collection points. The mapping of the problems indicated low risks of formation of slag and viscosity. The fouling index was high, from 0.69 for the decanter and 1.11 for the readler, the latter having a medium potential viscosity. The formation of alkali occurred in the readler and decanter, causing corrosion at these points. The calculations of the deposition rates, based on the elemental chemical composition of the ashes were able to express the problems that occur in the combustion of the forest biomass in the boiler.

RESUMO: A geração de efluentes nos abatedouros de aves aumentou consideravelmente nos últimos anos devido à crescente demanda por carne de frango. Esse fato, combinado com a atual necessidade de desenvolvimento de novas formas de energia renovável a partir da biomassa e a falta de instalações de descarte para isso, motivou este estudo. O objetivo foi determinar a viabilidade técnica da produção de carvão para churrasco, usando briquetes produzidos com diferentes misturas contendo lodo de abatedouro de aves e maravalha de Pinus spp. Para determinar a viabilidade técnica, misturou-se os dois resíduos adicionando gradualmente 10-90 % de lodo nas misturas, o que resultou em nove tratamentos contendo lodo e um contendo apenas maravalha. Depois disso, quatro briquetes de cada tratamento foram produzidos e carbonizados. Após a carbonização, os carvões foram submetidos às análises de teor de umidade (MC), densidade a granel (BD), resistência à compressão (CS), poder calorífico superior (GCV) e análise imediata (PA). O Rendimento Gravimétrico (GY) e a Densidade Energética (DE) de cada tratamento foram calculados usando os resultados das outras análises. A resistência à compressão (CR), o poder calorífico superior (GCV), o teor de voláteis (VM) e o teor de carbono fixo (FC) do carvão diminuiu com o aumento da proporção de lodo nas misturas. A densidade aparente (BD), o teor de cinzas (AC) e a densidade energética (ED) aumentaram com o acréscimo de lodo na mistura. A melhor mistura para a produção de carvão de briquetes para uso doméstico foi a que teve 90 % de lodo e 10 % de partículas de Pinus.

ABSTRACT: The generation of wastes in poultry abattoirs has increased considerably in recent years due to the growing demand for chicken meat. This fact, combined with the current need for developing new forms of renewable energy from biomass, and the lack of disposal facilities, motivated this study. We determined the technical feasibility of the barbecue charcoal production using briquettes produced with different blends containing sludge from a poultry abattoir and Pinus spp. shavings. To that end, we have mixed both residues by gradually adding 10 to 90 % of sludge in the blends, which resulted in 9 treatments containing sludge, and 1 containing only shavings. After that, we produced four briquettes of each treatment and charred them by using a heating ramp. After charring, we submitted the charcoal to the analyzes of Moisture Content (MC), Bulk Density (BD), Compressive Resistance (CR), Gross Calorific Value (GCV), and Proximate Analysis (PA). We calculated the Gravimetric Yield (GY) and the Energy Density (ED) by using the results from the other analyzes. Results showed that the CR, the GCV, the Volatile Matter (VM), and the Fixed Carbon Content (FC) of the charcoals decreased by increasing the proportion of sludge in the blends. However, the charcoals’ bulk density (BD) increased, which also increased its energy density (ED) and ash content (AC). The best blend to produce charcoal for household use was the one containing 90 % of sludge and 10 % of Pinus spp. shavings.

Resumo A utilização de colmos de bambu pode ser uma importante alternativa de ampliação das fontes renováveis para a produção de bioenergia, inclusive para a produção de carvão. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial de quatro espécies de bambu para a produção de carvão vegetal para uso doméstico, como forma de promoção do uso múltiplo desta matéria-prima e para geração de renda adicional para os agricultores familiares de Santa Catarina. Foram analisados cinco indivíduos das espécies Bambusa vulgaris, coletada em Florianópolis, e Phyllostachys bambusoides; Phyllostachys edulis e Phyllostachys nigra coletadas no município de Frei Rogério, Santa Catarina. As análises da massa específica básica dos colmos in natura, as propriedades físicas, rendimento da carbonização e propriedades energéticas do carvão foram realizadas nas porções basal, mediana e topo dos colmos de bambu de cada espécie. A qualidade do carvão vegetal variou entre as espécies de bambu, tendo como único ponto negativo o alto teor de cinzas para uso doméstico do carvão vegetal. Houve alta correlação positiva entre a densidade básica dos colmos e a densidade relativa aparente do carvão vegetal. A espécie Bambusa vulgaris apresentou o maior rendimento no processo produtivo, porém gerou carvão mais leve e com pior desempenho energético. Entre as espécies avaliadas, Phyllostachys nigra foi a espécie que produziu o carvão vegetal com a melhor qualidade energética e com boas propriedades físicas e rendimento gravimétrico. A qualidade do carvão vegetal variou em relação à altura do colmo. O topo dos colmos, que é o resíduo que pode ser destinado para a produção de carvão em plantios comerciais de bambu para múltiplos usos, apresentou maior rendimento no processo produtivo e carvão com maior densidade. Porém a qualidade energética do carvão foi inferior em relação a base e posição mediana dos colmos.

Abstract The use of bamboo stems can be an important alternative for expanding renewable sources for bioenergy production, including for charcoal production. Therefore, the aim of this research was to evaluate the potential of four bamboo species for the production of charcoal for home use, as a way to promote the multiple use of this raw material and to generate additional income for the family farmers of Santa Catarina state. Five individuals of the species Bambusa vulgaris, collected in Florianópolis, and Phyllostachys bambusoides; Phyllostachys edulis; Phyllostachys nigra were collected in the municipality of Frei Rogério, Santa Catarina. The analyses of the basic density of the in natura stems, the physical properties, gravimetric yield and energetic properties of the charcoal were carried out in the basal, median and top portions of the bamboo stems of each species. The quality of the charcoal varied among the bamboo species, having as the only negative point the high ash content for home use charcoal. There was a high positive correlation between the basic density of the stem and the apparent relative density of charcoal. The species B. vulgaris presented the highest yield in the productive process, but it generated lighter charcoal and with lower energy performance. Among the evaluated species, Phyllostachys nigra was the species that produced the charcoal with the best energetic quality and with good physical properties and gravimetric yield. The quality of the charcoal varies with respect to the height of the stem. The top of the stems, which is the residue that can be destined for the production of charcoal in commercial plantations of bamboo for multiple uses, presented greater yield in the productive process and charcoal with greater density. However, the energetic quality of the charcoal was inferior in relation to the base and median position of the stems.

Resumo Com a determinação do quanto de biomassa florestal é gerada após as intervenções culturais é possível definir as áreas passíveis de exploração. Com isso, o objetivo do trabalho foi quantificar e estimar a oferta de biomassa de Pinus taeda L. disponível após as intervenções culturais. O experimento foi realizado em reflorestamentos nos municípios dos estados do Paraná e Santa Catarina, com idades de 3 anos (primeira desrama), 5 anos (segunda desrama), 7 anos (terceira desrama), 11 anos (primeiro desbaste) 19 anos (segundo desbaste), 23 e 33 anos (cortes rasos). Para cada idade foram amostradas 10 árvores e quantificados os componentes acículas, galhos, ponteira e casca. Após o corte raso, aos 23 anos houve maior disponibilidade de biomassa individual (372,6 kg.árv-1) e por unidade de área (144,4 t.ha-1), sendo composto principalmente por galhos (69,3%), seguido das acículas (17,9%), casca (11,0%) e ponteira (1,8%) por unidade de área. A correlação entre a massa dos componentes da biomassa por árvore e as variáveis independentes foi significativa e superior a 0,52. A menor correlação foi observada entre estas e a quantidade ofertada de ponteiras. Os modelos de regressão selecionados para estimar a massa de biomassa em função das variáveis independentes tiveram R2aju superiores a 83%, baixos desvios padrões e coeficientes de variação.

Abstract Along with the determination of how much of forest biomass is generated after the cultural interventions, it is possible to define areas that can be exploited. Thus, the objective of this work was to quantify and estimate the biomass supply of Pinus taeda L. available after cultural interventions. The experiment was carried out in populations in the cities of Paraná and Santa Catarina states, with ages of 3 years (first pruning), 5 years (second pruning), 7 years (third pruning), 11 years (first thinning), 19 years (second thinning), 23 and 33 years (harvesting). For each age, 10 trees were sampled and the components of the leaves, twigs, canopy and bark were quantified. After harvesting at 23 years old there was greater availability of individual biomass (372.6 kg. tree-1) and per unit area (144.4 t.ha-1), being composed mainly of twigs (69.3%), followed by leaves (17.9%), bark (11.0%) and canopy (1.8%) per unit area. The correlation between the mass of the components of the biomass per tree and the independent variables was significant and higher to 0.52. The lower correlation was observed between these and the mass of canopy. The regression models selected to estimate the mass of biomass from the independent variables had R2adju higher than 83%, low standard deviations and low coefficients of variation.

RESUMO Durante a queima da biomassa em sistemas industriais haverá a formação de resíduos contendo cinzas e carbono residual, cujo teor será variável em função da eficiência e dos parâmetros de operação das câmaras de combustão. A caracterização destes resíduos é ferramenta essencial para visualizar a sua potencialidade de reuso energético. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar o comportamento térmico da biomassa e dos resíduos gerados no processo de combustão em caldeira. Foram analisadas amostras de biomassa florestal e das cinzas geradas na combustão desta biomassa em laboratório, e em quatro pontos de geração e tratamento dos resíduos da combustão (readler, tremonha, lavador de gases e decantador) dentro da caldeira de uma termelétrica. Em todas as amostras foi realizada a análise termogravimétrica (TG e DTG) e determinadas a composição química elementar, análise imediata e o poder calorífico superior. A eficiência de queima da biomassa na fornalha da caldeira foi alta, demonstrada pela composição química e comportamento de degradação térmica dos resíduos coletados no readler. Os resíduos leves do lavador de gases apresentaram propriedades químicas e energéticas (7180 kcal/kg; 75% de teor de carbono fixo; 21 % de teor de voláteis e 3,72% de cinzas) e comportamento térmico similares ao observado para o carvão vegetal de eucalipto. Porém, para o reuso dos resíduos da combustão em caldeira, em sistemas de reinjeção ou requeima, ajustes nos equipamentos são essenciais para se alcançar a eficiência na queima e evitar problemas operacionais. Já os resíduos do decantador não apresentam potencial para reuso energético.

ABSTRACT It is known that during the biomass combustion in industrial systems the formation of residues containing ashes and residual carbon occurs. The content of the residues varies according to the efficiency and operating parameters of the combustion chambers. The characterization of these residues is an essential tool to identify their potential for energy reuse. The aim of this paper was to analyze the thermal behavior of the biomass and the residues yielded during the combustion process in a boiler system. For this purpose, forest biomass and ash samples have been analyzed in a laboratory and at four collection points of generation and treatment of the combustion residues (readler, hopper, scrubber, and decanter) inside the boiler of a power plant. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA and DTA) have been carried out on all samples. Moreover, the ultimate analysis, the proximate analysis and the gross calorific value of all samples have been determined. Results show that the biomass burning efficiency in the boiler furnace was high, which was proven by the chemical composition and thermal degradation behavior of the residues collected in the readler. The scrubber’s light wastes presented chemical and energy properties (7180 kcal/kg, 75% fixed carbon content, 21% volatile content and 3.72% ash content), and thermal behavior similar to the ones found in the literature for eucalyptus charcoal. However, in order to reuse these combustion residues on reinjection or reheat systems, machine adjustments are essential to achieve burning efficiency and avoid operational problems. The decanter wastes did not show potential for energy reuse.

RESUMO: Este estudo tem por objetivo avaliar as propriedades tecnológicas de painéis de madeira produzidos com partículas de bambu da espécie Phyllostachysedulis, e do gênero tradicionalmente utilizado pelo setor para a produção dos painéis particulados no Brasil, o Pinus spp. As varas de bambu com três anos de idade foram coletadas em Frei Rogério, no estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil, sendo transformadas em partículas em um moinho. As partículas de Pinus spp. foram coletadas no processo produtivo da Empresa Bonet Madeiras e Papéis Ltda em Santa Cecília, Santa Catarina. A empresa utiliza toras provenientes do desbaste de reflorestamentos de Pinus taeda e Pinus elliottii com oito anos de idade, sem distinção de espécies. O experimento foi composto por cinco tratamentos com mistura das partículas de bambu e de madeira em diferentes proporções ((T1)100:0%; (T2)75:25%; (T3)50:50%; (T4)25:75%; (T5)0:100%). Os painéis foram produzidos com densidade nominal de 700 kg / m³ e ciclo de prensagem de 160 ºC e 40 kgf/cm2 por oito minutos. Os resultados para as propriedades físicas e mecânicas dos painéis foram avaliados por meio da Análise da Variância e do Teste de Tukey a 95% de probabilidade. Os resultados evidenciaram que o bambu apresenta potencial para a produção de painéis de partículas. O resultado mais promissor foi encontrado com a adição de 50% de bambu na composição do painel (T3), principalmente quanto a estabilidade dimensional e aos valores de resistência e rigidez. Os valores para ligação interna apresentaram-se significativamente menores com adição de mais de 25% de partículas de bambu.

ABSTRACT: This paper aimed to evaluate the technological properties of particleboards produced with particles of unconventional species, bamboo of the species Phyllostachys edulis, and of the genus traditionally used by the sector for the production of the particulate panels in Brazil, Pinus spp.The bamboo splints of 3 years old were collected in Frei Rogério, Santa Catarina, being transformed into particles in a mill hammer, while the particles of Pinus spp. were collected from the industrial process of MDP production in Bonet Madeiras e Papéis Ltda Company in Santa Cecília, Santa Catarina. The company used eight-year-old logs of P. taeda and P. elliottii from the thinning process, without distinction of the species. The experiment was composed of five compositions with mixing the bamboo and wood particles in different proportions ((T1)100:0%; (T2)75:25%; (T3)50:50%; (T4)25:75%; (T5)0:100%). The panels were produced nominal density of 700 kg / m³ and pressing cycle of 160ºC and 40 kgf/cm² for 8 minutes. Results reporting physical and mechanical properties of panels were evaluated through Analysis of Variance and Tukey´s Test at 95% probability. The results evidenced that bamboo particles presented potential for the production of particleboard. The most promising results were presented with the addition of 50% of bamboo in the panel composition (T3), mainly by means observed for dimensional stability, as for strength and stiffness. Values of internal bond presented significantly lower averages with the addition of more than 25% of bamboo.

RESUMO O bambu é uma planta versátil e amplamente utilizada na alimentação, fabricação de utensílios, construção civil e usos ambientais. O uso energético dos colmos ou resíduos de outras aplicações é uma alternativa cada vez mais promissora e compatível com os princípios do desenvolvimento sustentável. Objetivou-se avaliar o potencial de quatro espécies de bambu (Bambusa vulgaris, Phyllostachys bambusoides, Phyllostachys edulis e Phyllostachys nigra) para a produção de briquetes. Avaliaram-se o teor de umidade, densidade aparente, resistência à compressão, composição química imediata, poder calorífico superior e densidade energética. Os briquetes tiveram densidade aparente variando de 1,109 g cm-3 a 1,228 g cm-3; resistência à compressão de 4,68 MPa a 5,82 MPa; teor de voláteis de 79,01 % a 82,25 %; teor de carbono fixo de 15,26 % a 20,18 %; teor de cinzas de 0,38 % a 2,49 %; poder calorífico superior de 4.571 kcal kg-1 a 4.716 kcal kg-1; e densidade energética de 5,08 Gcal m-3 a 5,84 Gcal m-3. Os briquetes produzidos a partir de P. nigra apresentaram melhor qualidade energética, seguidos dos briquetes de P. edulis, P. bambusoides e B. vulgaris. Diante dos resultados, pode-se aferir que as quatro espécies de bambu são matérias-primas alternativas para a geração de energia.

ABSTRACT Bamboo is a versatile plant that is widely used in many areas for feeding, manufacturing of utensils, construction and environmental purposes. The energetic use of bamboo stalks or residues from other applications is a promising alternative and compatible with sustainable development principles. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of four bamboo species (Bambusa vulgaris, Phyllostachys bambusoides, Phyllostachys edulis and Phyllostachys nigra) for briquette production. The following properties were evaluated: moisture content, bulk density, compression strength, proximate analysis, gross calorific value and energetic density. The results showed numbers ranging from 1.109 g cm-3 to 1.228 g cm-3 for bulk density, 4.68 MPa to 5.82 MPa for compression strength, 79.01 % to 82.25 % for volatile content, 15.26 % to 20.18 % for fixed carbon content, 0.38 % to 2.49 % for ash content, 4,571 kcal kg-1 to 4,716 kcal kg-1 for gross calorific value and 5.08 Gcal m-3 to 5.84 Gcal m-3 for energetic density. The briquettes produced from P. nigra presented the best energetic quality, followed by briquettes from P. edulis, P. bambusoides and B. vulgaris. Overall, it may be said that the four bamboo species can be used as alternative raw materials for energy generation.

RESUMO: A peletização de resíduos florestais e agrícolas tem sido uma alternativa na obtenção de produtos com maior valor agregado para a geração de energia, pois muitos resíduos podem ser utilizados neste processo. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a qualidade energética dos pellets produzidos com resíduos florestais e agrícolas como matéria-prima e verificar a viabilidade de uso da análise termogravimétrica (TGA) e análise termogravimétrica diferencial (DTG) para caracterizar o comportamento dos pellets durante o processo de combustão. Foram utilizados quatro resíduos: (1) partículas de Pinus spp., (2) resíduos de poda de maçã, (3) ramos secos aciculados de Araucaria angustifolia e (4) falhas de pinhão de A. angustifolia. Foram determinadas a composição química das matérias-primas e analisadas suas propriedades físicas e energéticas, bem como a análise imediata dos pellets. As amostras foram submetidas ao TGA com uma taxa de aquecimento de 20ºC min-1 da temperatura ambiente a 1000ºC, em atmosfera de N2. As curvas termogravimétricas permitiram a avaliação da perda de massa em função da temperatura. O DTG permitiu a avaliação da taxa de perda de massa. A variação na composição química de cada resíduo foi determinante para caracterizar cada estágio da degradação térmica. Os estágios e os eventos de degradação estavam intimamente ligados à natureza química e energética das amostras. O uso de TGA, para caracterizar a degradação térmica dos pellets produzidos com diferentes resíduos florestais e agrícolas, se mostrou eficiente para quantificar e qualificar os eventos que ocorreram em cada estágio de combustão desses biocombustíveis.

ABSTRACT: The pelleting of forest and agricultural materials, mainly because many residues from both industries can be used in this process, has been an alternative in obtaining added value products to energy generation. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the energy quality of the pellets produced from forest and agricultural residues as raw materials and to verify the utility of the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTG) in characterizing the behavior of the pellets during the combustion process. Four residues were used: (1) Pinus spp. woodchips, (2) apple pruning residues, (3) aciculated dry branches of Araucaria angustifolia and (4) A. angustifolia empty-seeds. Chemical composition of the raw materials was determined and the physical and energetic properties of the pellets were analysed. Plus, the proximate analysis of the pellets was carried out. The samples were submitted to TGA with a heating rate of 20ºC min-1 from room temperature to 1000ºC, in a N2 atmosphere. The variation of chemical composition of each residue was determinant in the characterization of each stage of the thermal degradation. Stages and events of the degradation were closely linked to the chemical and energetic nature of the samples. Use of TGA to characterize the thermal degradation of the pellets produced with different forest and agricultural residues was demonstrated as an efficient technique to quantify and qualify the events that occurred in each stage of the combustion of these biofuels.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar o plano de manejo sustentável de uma área de caatinga, de forma a sugerir as melhores estratégias de tratamento da biomassa para geração de energia. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em um empreendimento privado, com área de 114.755 ha, na região sul do Piauí. A análise do plano de manejo, elaborado por Toniolo, Leal Junior e Campello (2005), foi feita pelo autor deste trabalho em três etapas. A primeira consistiu em um levantamento florístico e inventário florestal. O segundo estudo consistiu na quantificação e qualificação da biomassa florestal a ser destinada para geração de energia, incluindo a coleta de galhos no potencial total de biomassa. O terceiro estudo consistiu em realizar testes de estocagem da biomassa em campo e em pátio, para estimar a melhoria da qualidade da biomassa para geração de energia. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que a vegetação analisada apresenta: alta diversidade florística; muitos indivíduos por unidade de área; árvores de porte pequeno a médio; a maior parte dos indivíduos com diâmetro pequeno e alta produtividade de biomassa por unidade de área. Quanto à qualidade energética da biomassa da caatinga: o teor de umidade e o teor de cinzas das árvores recém-derrubadas foram baixos e o poder calorífico líquido foi alto. Quanto à estocagem: o corte das árvores na época de chuva e a sua manutenção em campo para a queda das folhas, por 10 dias, proporcionou um aumento significativo no teor de umidade da biomassa. Quinze dias de estocagem em pilhas, no pátio, foram suficientes para troncos e galhos de árvores da caatinga atingirem alta qualidade energética da madeira. As melhores estratégias de tratamento da biomassa consistiram em: realizar a colheita e coleta de toras e galhos manualmente, com o uso de motosserras. A colheita deve ser realizada de forma diferenciada nas estações de seca e chuva. Na estação seca, o máximo de material dos galhos deve ser retirado da área no momento da colheita das toras. No período das chuvas, os galhos não devem ser removidos do campo antes da queda das folhas, com posterior uso da estocagem em pilhas, em pátio, para a redução do teor de umidade. A massa específica; estrutura anatômica da madeira; morfológica das árvores e presença de cupinzeiros devem ser levados em consideração durante o planejamento de tratamento da biomassa para o uso na geração de energia, principalmente no dimensionamento dos picadores florestais e industriais. A estocagem das toras e dos galhos deve ser realizada separadamente, devido ao comportamento diferenciado da secagem da biomassa em função das dimensões e forma da mesma. A estocagem de toras e galhos de árvores da caatinga pode ser utilizada como ferramenta para o manejo da biomassa para geração de energia, de forma a melhorar a qualidade energética da madeira.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to analyze the sustainable management plan of an area of Caatinga biome in order to suggest the best treatment strategies of biomass for energy generation. The study was conducted in a private enterprise, with an area of 114,755 ha in southern Piauí state. The management plan analysis, prepared by Toniolo, Leal Junior e Campello (2005), was made by the authors of this study in three steps. The first consisted of a floristic survey and forest inventory. The second study was the quantification and qualification of forest biomass to be allocated for energy generation, including the collection of branches in total biomass potential. The third study consisted of performing storage test of biomass in the field and in the forest and in an industrial yard, to estimate the improvement of the quality of biomass for energy generation. The results indicated that analyzed vegetation features: high floristic diversity, many individuals per unit area; small to medium trees; most individuals with small diameter and high biomass productivity per unit area. As for the energy quality of Caatinga biomass: the moisture content and ash content of newly felled trees were low and the net calorific value was high. As for storage: the cutting of trees during the rainy season and its field maintenance for the leave fall, for 10 days, it resulted in a significant increase in the moisture content of the biomass. Fifteen days of storage in piles in the yard were sufficient to trunks and branches of trees of Caatinga achieve high quality wood energy. The best biomass treatment strategies consisted of: performing harvesting and collecting logs and branches manually with the use of chain saws. The harvest should be done differently in the dry and rainy seasons. In the dry season, as much material from the branches should be removed from the area at the time of harvesting the logs. During the rainy season, the branches should not be removed from the field before the fall of leaves, with subsequent use of storage in piles, in the yard, to reduce the moisture content. The density; anatomical structure of wood; morphology of the trees and the presence of termites should be taken into account during treatment planning of biomass for the use in power generation, especially in the design of forest and industrial chippers. The storage of logs and branches should be performed separately due to the different behavior of drying the biomass depending on dimensions and shape thereof. The storage of logs and scrub of tree branches can be used as a tool for management of biomass for power generation in order to improve the energy of wood.

RESUMO: Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar a qualidade energética de colmos de Bambusa vulgaris para queima direta (in natura) e na forma de carvão vegetal. Foram analisados cinco indivíduos (colmos) de Bambusa vulgaris com 3 anos de idade, coletados na cidade de Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. Nos colmos in natura foram determinados o teor de umidade recém coletado (39%); massa específica básica (0,624gcm-3); a composição química (teor de extrativos totais (16,26%) e teor de lignina (25,76%)); a composição química imediata(teor de voláteis (82,25%); teor de carbono fixo (15,26%) e cinzas (2,49%)) e poder calorífico superior (4571kcalkg-1). No carvão vegetal, produzido em laboratório, foram determinados o rendimento gravimétrico (36,40%); a densidade aparente (0,372gcm-3); teor de voláteis (27,55%); teor de carbono fixo (67,32%); cinzas (5,12%) e poder calorífico superior (7431kcalkg-1). A espécie Bambusa vulgaris tem potencial para utilização na geração de energia tanto na forma in natura, como cavacos para a queima em caldeiras,como na forma de carvão vegetal para uso doméstico, podendo ser utilizada para ampliar a base de biomassa para geração de energia e até substituir as espécies madeireiras do gênero Pinus e Eucalyptus utilizadas para este fim na região sul do Brasil.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to determine the energetic quality of the Bambusa vulgaris culms for combustion (in natura) and as a charcoal. Five individuals (culms) of Bambusa vulgaris of 3 years of age were analyzed, gathered in the city of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. In the in natura culms it was determined the moisture content freshly gathered (39%); basic density (0.624gcm-3); the chemical composition (total extractive content (16.26%) and lignin content (25.76%)); the proximate chemical composition (volatiles content (82.25%); fixed carbon content (15.26%) and ash (2.49%)) and gross calorific value (4571kcalkg-1). In the charcoal, produced in the laboratory, the determined properties were the gravimetric yield (36.40%);the apparent density (0.372gcm-3); volatiles content (27.55%); fixed carbon content (67.32%); ash (5.12%) and gross calorific value (7431kcalkg-1). The Bambusa vulgaris species has potential for use in the energy generation either in natura, as chips for burning in boilers or in the charcoal form for domestic use, it can be used to broaden the base of biomass for energy generation and to replace the timber species of Pinus and Eucalyptus gender used for this purpose in the Southern region of Brazil.

RESUMO: Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a qualidade energética da biomassa florestal, oriunda da caatinga, em função de diferentes tempos de estocagem no campo. O trabalho foi desenvolvido na região sul do Piauí, entre janeiro e fevereiro (época de chuvas). Foram coletadas amostras gerais, contendo galhos e troncos de várias espécies, e amostras de galhos e troncos separadamente, em 5 parcelas de 20x20m. As amostras gerais foram avaliadas no estado recém colhido e as amostras de galhos e toras após 15 e 30 dias de estocagem em pilhas. As análises realizadas foram: teor de umidade na base úmida; teor de cinzas e poder calorífico. O teor de umidade da biomassa recém colhida variou de 39% com dois dias após o corte a 79% em biomassa cortada e deixada distribuída no campo por 10 dias. Após estocagem em pilhas por 15 dias, os galhos ficaram com teor de umidade de 18% e as toras com 21%, e poder calorífico líquido de 3432kcal kg-1 e 3274kcal kg-1, respectivamente. Após 30 dias, os galhos ficaram com 13% e as toras com 21% de umidade, e poder calorífico líquido de 3672kcal kg-1 e 3240kcal kg-1, respectivamente. O teor de cinzas da biomassa foi baixo. O corte das árvores na época de chuva, com manutenção da biomassa em campo por 10 dias, proporcionou aumento do teor de umidade. Os galhos tiveram melhor comportamento durante a estocagem. Quinze dias de estocagem são suficientes para a biomassa da caatinga atingir alta qualidade energética.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of forest biomass energy, coming from the Caatinga, for different storage times in the field. The study was conducted in southern Piauí, between January and February (rainy season). Samples were collected containing branches and trunks of various species, and samples of branches and trunks separately in 5 sample units of 20x20m. Samples were evaluated in the general state freshly harvested and samples of branches and logs after 15 and 30 days of storage in piles in the field. The analyzes carried out were: moisture content on wet basis, ash content and calorific value. Moisture content of freshly harvested biomass ranged from 39% with two days after cutting to 79% in biomass cut and left distributed in the field for 10 days. After storage in piles for 15 days, branches showed moisture content of 18% and the logs 21%, and net calorific value of 3432kcal kg-1 and 3274kcal kg-1, respectively. After 30 days, moisture content for branches was 13% and the logs 21%, and net calorific value of 3672kcal kg-1 and 3240kcal kg-1, respectively. Ash content of the biomass was low. Cutting trees in the rainy season, with maintenance of biomass in the field for 10 days, resulted in an increment of moisture content. Branches had the best behaviour during the storage. Fifteen days of storage are sufficient for the caatinga biomass to achieve high-quality energy.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo averiguar a qualidade do carvão vegetal para consumo doméstico, comercializado na região Serrana Sul de Santa Catarina. Foram coletadas 12 marcas de carvão na região da Associação dos Municípios da Região Serrana (AMURES) e Curitibanos. Foram descritas e analisadas as características gerais das embalagens e determinadas as propriedades físicas e energéticas de cada uma das marcas. As propriedades analisadas foram: densidade relativa aparente, teor de umidade, poder calorífico, teor de carbono fixo, voláteis e cinzas. As marcas comercializadas na região são oriundas dos Estados de Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul e Paraná. A acácia-negra e os eucaliptos são as espécies mais usadas para a produção de carvão. Não existe padronização das informações nas embalagens. O carvão vegetal apresentou densidade relativa aparente alta (0,403 g/cm3); teor de umidade alto (7,35%); poder calorífico superior médio de 6.449 kcal/kg, com muita variação entre as amostras; alto teor de voláteis e cinzas; e baixo teor de carbono fixo (32,85%, 1,96% e 65,17%, respectivamente). A produção e consumo do carvão vegetal no Planalto Sul catarinense são regionalizados, sem padronização das embalagens e com registro nos órgãos ambientais de fiscalização. A qualidade do carvão comercializado na região é baixa.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the quality of charcoal for domestic consumption, marketed in the southern mountain region of Santa Catarina. Twelve brands of charcoal sold in the AMURES (Association of Municipalities of the Mountain Region) and Curitibanos region were collected. The general characteristics of packaging and certain physical and energetic properties of each of the brands were described and analyzed. The properties analyzed were: apparent relative density, moisture content, calorific value, fixed carbon content, volatile and ash. The brands sold in the region are from the states of Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and Parana. The black wattle and eucalyptus are most commonly used for the production of charcoal. There is no standard information in packagings. The charcoal showed high relative density (0.403 g/cm 3); high moisture content (7.35%); with an average gross calorific value of 6449 kcal/kg, with a lot of variation between samples; high volatile and ash content and low fixed carbon content (32.85%, 1.96% and 65.17%, respectively). The production and consumption of charcoal in southern Santa Catarina plateau is regionalized, without standardization of packaging and with records in environmental supervisory bodies. The quality of charcoal sold in the region is low.

RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o rendimento da matéria-prima de Eucalyptus benthamii, por meio dos desdobros tangencial e radial, além da classificação das toras quanto à presença das rachaduras de topo. A classificação das toras quanto às rachaduras foi realizada por meio da análise visual, em que era aplicado um conceito conforme a intensidade do defeito. Posteriormente, as toras foram separadas em duas classes diamétricas (20 a 25 e 25,1 a 30 cm) e processadas em três sistemas de desdobro (tangencial em bloco, radial e tangencial em bloco com face curva), sendo cada tratamento composto por três repetições com 10 toras cada um. Na análise estatística dos dados de rendimento, foram aplicados o teste de Kolmogorov Smirnov, a Análise da Variância e o teste de Tukey. Nos resultados, foi observado que a maioria das toras da classe de menor diâmetro apresentou intensidade mediana, enquanto na maior classe diamétrica a intensidade foi baixa. Os rendimentos médios líquidos encontrados foram de 43,5% e 39,2% nas classes inferior e superior, respectivamente, os quais foram influenciados pelas rachaduras das peças e pelos destopos. Observou-se que o desdobro tangencial em bloco e em face curva foram os métodos que apresentaram maior aproveitamento em madeira serrada na classe de 20 a 25 cm, enquanto na classe de 25,1 a 30 cm o sistema tangencial em bloco e radial foi equivalente.

ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to determine the yield of raw material of Eucalyptus benthamii through the tangential and radial sawing, besides classifying the logs for the presence of end splits. The classification of logs as for the splits was accomplished by means of visual analysis, using a concept which was applied according to the intensity of the defect. Subsequently, the logs were separated into two diametric classes (20 to 25, and 25.1 to 30 cm) and processed in three sawing systems (tangential block, radial and tangential block with curved face), each treatment consisting of 3 replicates with 10 logs each. Statistical analysis of yield data was carried out using the Kolmogorov Smirnov test, Analysis of Variance and Tukey test. In the results it was observed that most of the logs of smaller diameter class presented median intensity, whereas for larger diameter class, the intensity was low. The average net yields found were 43.5% and 39.2% for the lower and upper classes, respectively, which were influenced by the splits of parts and the trimming. It was observed that the tangential sawing block and curved face were the methods that presented greater use of lumber of the class 20 to 25 cm, while in the class 25.1 to 30 cm, the block and radial tangential system were equivalent.

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram quantificar e qualificar a biomassa residual produzida em plantios comerciais de Pinus taeda L., em diferentes idades e sistemas de manejo, visando à geração de energia em sistemas de cogeração. As idades dos povoamentos foram: três anos (primeira poda), seis anos (terceira poda), 10 anos (terceira poda), 12 anos (primeiro desbaste), 14 anos (primeiro desbaste), 16 anos (segundo desbaste) e 24 anos (corte raso). Cinco árvores foram colhidas em cada idade, e seus componentes separados, pesados e analisados quanto ao teor de umidade e ao poder calorífico. Os dados quantitativos e qualitativos foram correlacionados para determinar o potencial de geração de energia elétrica a partir da biomassa florestal. Os plantios de Pinus taeda L. produziram de 30 a 95 t de biomassa florestal/ha, respectivamente, aos 3 e 24 anos de idade. O maior potencial produtivo de biomassa para a geração de energia são o corte raso (24 anos), o primeiro desbaste (14 anos) e a terceira poda (10 anos), respectivamente. O material com melhor qualidade para geração de energia foi o galho, com o menor teor de umidade (54%) e o maior poder calorífico líquido (1.784 kcal/kg), sendo 24, 14 e 10 anos as melhores idades. O sistema de manejo e as práticas silviculturais têm influência, juntamente com a idade, na produção de biomassa por unidade de área. O rendimento energético da biomassa recém-colhida é baixo, necessitando de tratamento prévio para redução do teor de umidade e aumento do poder calorífico líquido.

The objectives of this study were to quantify and qualify the residual biomass produced in commercial plantations of Pinus taeda L. in different ages and management systems, aiming at generating energy in co-generation systems. The ages of the forests were: 3 years (first pruning), 6 years (third pruning), 10 years (third pruning), 12 years (first thinning), 14 years (first thinning), 16 (second thinning) and 24 years (harvesting). Five trees were harvested at each age and their separate components were weighed and analyzed for moisture content and calorific value. Quantitative and qualitative data were correlated to determine the potential for generating electricity from forest biomass. The plantations of Pinus taeda L. produced 30-95 tonnes of forestry biomass/ha, respectively, at 3 and 24 years of age. The highest yield potential of biomass for energy generation are harvesting (24 years), first thinning (14 years) and third pruning (10 years), respectively. The best quality material for power generation was the branch with the lowest moisture content (54%) and higher net calorific value (1784 kcal/kg), and the best ages were 24, 14 and 10 years. The management system and forestry practices have an influence, together with age on biomass production per unit area. The energy performance of newly harvested biomass is low, requiring treatment to reduce the moisture content and increase in net calorific value.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo determinar a influência das dimensões de biomassa sobre as alterações em suas propriedades durante a estocagem, visando seu uso na geração de energia. O experimento foi realizado no Município de Lages, SC, entre outubro de 2003 e fevereiro de 2005. Foram utilizadas toras com casca de Pinus taeda L. e Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden e costaneiras de Pinus spp., estocadas em pilhas, por um período de seis meses. As amostras para análise foram coletadas no estado recém-colhido, com dois, quatro e seis meses de estocagem. Foram utilizados quatro lotes, colhidos e armazenados segundo as estações do ano, permanecendo sob estocagem entre os meses de outubro a maio, janeiro a agosto, maio a novembro e agosto a fevereiro. As propriedades avaliadas foram: teor de umidade na base úmida, poder calorífico superior e líquido e teor de cinzas. As dimensões tiveram maior influência no teor de umidade e poder calorífico líquido. As costaneiras de Pinus sofreram maior perda de umidade, maior ganho de poder calorífico superior e inferior e menor teor de cinzas durante a estocagem. A costaneira foi também o material mais heterogêneo, com relação às variações ocorridas no armazenamento. As toras de Pinus tiveram a menor perda de umidade e o menor ganho energético. De forma geral e considerando as propriedades mais importantes para a geração de energia, as dimensões da biomassa tiveram maior influência que a espécie sobre a qualidade da biomassa na estocagem.

The objective of the present study was to determine the influence of the size and shape of the biomass on the changes in its properties during storage, aiming its use on energy production. The experiment was conducted in Lages - Santa Catarina State, Brazil, from October 2003 to February 2005. Logs with bark of Pinus taeda L.and Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden, and Pinus spp edge, were stored in piles for six months. Samples for analysis were collected in freshly harvested state, with two, four and six months of storage. Four batches, collected and stored were used according to the seasons of the year, remaining in storage from October to May, from January to August, from May to November and from August to February. The properties evaluated were: moisture content in wet basis, gross and net calorific value and ash content. The shape and size had greater influence on the moisture content and on net calorific value. The pine edge suffered greater loss of moisture content, higher gain and lower gross calorific value and lower ash content during storage. This material was also the most heterogeneous, with respect to changes occurred during storage. The logs of Pinus had the lowest moisture loss and lower energy gain. In general, and considering the most important properties for generating energy, the size of the material had greater influence than the species on the behavior of biomass storage.
