ABSTRACT Background: The wood heat treatment results in the partial degradation of its chemical constituents, mainly cellulose and hemicellulose, reducing the hygroscopicity of the material. This process improves the dimensional stability and resistance to biodeterioration and worsens the mechanical resistance. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of heat treatment on the physical, anatomical, chemical, and mechanical properties of Fraxinus excelsior wood. In untreated and heat-treated wood, the pH, buffering capacity, basic density, equilibrium moisture content, shrinkage, wood anatomy, thermogravimetric behavior, and chemistry by conventional and FTIR methods were determined. Results: Heat treated wood had lower pH (5.50), equilibrium moisture content (6.26%), shrinkage (7,29%), holocellulose contents (55,96%) and higher buffering capacity (0,479 mmol/L), extractives (8,25%), and lignin contents (35,78%). Heat treatment reduced the pH and increased the buffering capacity of the wood, reduced the holocellulose content, and increased the lignin content, leaving the wood less hygroscopic and reducing its volumetric and linear variation. The process did not change the basic density and fiber length, but it reduced their width, lumen diameter, and wall thickness. The FTIR analysis confirmed the degradation of holocellulose and division of aliphatic side chains in lignin. The maximum dredging range of untreated and heat-treated wood occurred at 350 ºC, and the heat-treated wood had a higher residual mass when subjected to 500 ºC. Conclusion: Heat-treated wood can be indicated for products used in external environments, such as floors, fences, coatings, door and window structures.

Resumo A adaptação de espécies nativas de lepidópteros a plantios de eucalipto reduz a produtividade dessa cultura no Brasil. Oxydia vesulia Cramer (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) é praga-secundária, frequentemente, relatada em plantios de eucalipto com surtos populacionais e danos econômicos. Métodos de controle biológico, dessa praga, podem incluir o uso do endoparasitoide exótico de pupas Tetrastichus howardi Olliff (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) relatado como eficiente para o controle de lepidópteros-pragas. O parasitismo de lagartas e pupas de O. vesulia por T. howardi foi avaliado em condições controladas (25 ± 1º C, 60 ± 20% umidade e 12h fotoperíodo). Cada lagarta ou pupa de O. vesulia foi colocada individualmente em tubos de fundo chato com 10 e 15 fêmeas de T. howardi por 48h, respectivamente e, após esse período, os parasitoides foram removidos, as lagartas alimentadas e as pupas mantidas até a emergência do parasitoide ou formação de pupas ou de adultos dessa praga. As lagartas de quarto ínstar de O. vesulia, após o período de parasitismo, foram mantidas em potes com folhas de Eucalyptus urophylla trocadas, diariamente, até o fim do experimento. Um total de 40% das lagartas de O. vesulia morreu antes da fase de pré-pupa, 40% atingiram o estágio de pupa e morreram devido à má formação ou problemas e 20% originaram mariposas, porém nenhum parasitoide adulto emergiu das lagartas. Todas as pupas de O. vesulia foram parasitadas e tiveram emergência de parasitoides. O parasitismo de lagartas e pupas de O. vesulia por T. howardi mostra o potencial desse inimigo natural para o manejo integrado desse desfolhador em cultivos de eucalipto.

Abstract The adaptation of native lepidopteran species to eucalyptus plantations reduces the productivity of this crop in Brazil. Oxydia vesulia Cramer (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is a secondary pest, frequently reported in eucalyptus plantations with population outbreaks and economic damages. Methods of biological control of this pest may include the use of the exotic pupae endoparasitoid Tetrastichus howardi Olliff (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), reported as efficient to controlling lepidopteran pests. The parasitism of O. vesulia caterpillars and pupae by T. howardi was evaluated under controlled conditions (25 ± 1 ºC, 60 ± 20% humidity and 12:12 h L:D). Each O. vesulia caterpillar or pupae was individually placed in a flat-bottom tube with 10 and 15 females of T. howardi for 48h, respectively. The parasitoids were removed after that period, the caterpillars were fed and the pupae were maintained until emergence of the parasitoid or formation of pupae and emergence of adults of this pest. The fourth-instar caterpillars of O. vesulia, after the parasitism period, were kept in pots with Eucalyptus urophylla leaves, changed daily until the end of the experiment. A total of 40% of the caterpillars died before the pre-pupae stage, 40% reached the pupae stage and died due to inadequate adult formation and 20% generated moths, but none adult parasitoid emerged from the caterpillars. All pupae of O. vesulia were parasitized and showed emergence of parasitoids. The parasitism of O. vesulia caterpillars and pupae by T. howardi shows the potential of this natural enemy for the integrated management of this defoliator pest in eucalyptus plantations.

ABSTRACT Wood scarcity, attacks by primates and insects, and fungal damage in forest plantations make the introduction of new species necessary. Given this, it is important to understand the potential uses of wood in the production chain. Pinus patula Schltdl & Cham presents good adaptation to Brazilian conditions and is a candidate for wood supply. Its juvenile wood density however, is lower than that of other pine species. This study aimed to evaluate the properties of veneer on panels produced with twelve-year old P. patula wood compared with panels produced with P. taeda wood of the same age, which is commonly used for panel production. Panels were bonded with urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde adhesives using veneers applied on two types of plywood panel. The P. patula panels showed lower strength, stiffness and density when bonded with urea-formaldehyde, and higher strength, density and stiffness when bonded with phenol-formaldehyde in comparison with P. taeda. P. patula panels can be used for multilayer panel production.

RESUMO Danos por ventos são frequentes em plantações florestais, e a utilização desta madeira pode minimizar os prejuízos causados. O objetivo foi avaliar a composição química e o potencial energético da madeira e carvão de árvores sujeitas a danos pelos ventos. Oito clones de Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla com idade de dois anos foram selecionados em região onde danos por ventos ocorrem com alta frequência. A densidade básica, poder calorífico, composição química da madeira e poder calorifico, química imediata e rendimento gravimétrico do carvão foram determinados para todos os clones. O rendimento gravimétrico de materiais com alto teor de lignina e baixa relação S/G foi maior. A densidade energética da madeira e carvão apresentou maior relação com a densidade básica e aparente, respectivamente. Todos os materiais apresentaram potencial para bioenergia, mas o clone E se destacou com alto rendimento gravimétrico e densidade energética.

ABSTRACT Wind damages are common in forest plantations and the use of this wood can minimize losses. The objective was to evaluate the chemical composition and the energetic potential of wood and charcoal from trees subject to wind damage. Eight (A to H) two-years-old Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla clones were selected in a region where wind damage is frequent. The basic density, calorific value, chemical composition of wood and calorific value, immediate chemistry and gravimetric yield of charcoal were determined for all clones. Materials with high lignin content and low S/G ratio had higher gravimetric yield. The energy density of wood and charcoal showed high relationship with the basic and apparent relative density, respectively. All materials showed potential for bioenergy, but the clone E stood out with higher gravimetric yield and energy density.

RESUMO A madeira de eucalipto de árvores adultas é utilizada para os mais diversos fins, entretanto, a utilização desta madeira de árvores de idade precoce é limitada. O objetivo foi caracterizar e propor utilizações para madeira de eucalipto com dois anos de idade. Seis clones de Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla, com dois anos de idade, foram selecionados e suas características anatômicas, ultraestruturais, físicas e mecânicas avaliadas. A madeira do clone A apresentou fibras mais robustas e de melhor arranjo microfibrilar, resultando em melhores propriedades mecânicas e, por isto, melhor desempenho para uso estrutural. O clone F apresentou madeira com pouca variação da densidade básica no sentido radial, facilitando sua trabalhabilidade e, com o clone B, apresentou menor coeficiente de anisotropia e, por isto, a madeira é recomendada para locais com alta variação de umidade. A heterogeneidade das características da madeira dos clones avaliados corrobora a necessidade estudos por clone para uma sua melhor utilização.

ABSTRACT Eucalyptus wood from adult trees is used for several purposes; however, the wood of younger trees has limited use. This study aims to characterize and propose uses of two-year-old eucalyptus wood. Six two-year-old Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla clones have been selected and their anatomical, ultrastructural, physical and mechanical wood characteristics evaluated. The wood of Clone A shows more robust fibers with better microfibril arrangement, resulting in better mechanical properties, and therefore, a better performance for structural use. Clone F showed a low variation of wood basic density in the radial direction, facilitating its machinability, and with the Clone B, showed a lower anisotropy, and therefore, the wood is recommended for locations with high variations of humidity. The heterogeneity of the wood characteristics of the evaluated clones confirms the need for further studies, to choose those most adequate to each use.

RESUMO Vibrações transversais apresentam potencial para avaliação da madeira devido a alta precisão, baixo custo e rapidez, mas sua aplicação em madeira termorretificada ainda é pouco estudada. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as propriedades físicas e mecânicas de madeira termorretificada de Eucalyptus urophylla e Pinus oocarpa e relacionar a análise de ressonância (Bing) com o modulo de elasticidade estático e de ruptura da madeira.Corpos de prova foram confeccionados de três árvores de Eucalyptus urophylla e três de Pinus oocarpa e termorretificados a 150, 175, 200 e 225°C, com taxa de aquecimento de 5°C/min, tempo de residência de quatro horas com pressão atmosférica e presença de ar. A termorretificação reduziu a densidade básica, inchamento volumétrico, inchamento linear, coeficiente de anisotropia, umidade de equilíbrio e resistência mecânica da madeira de ambas as espécies. A análise de ressonância (Bing) apresentou alta relação com o modulo de elasticidade estático e o módulo de ruptura da madeira termorretificada de ambas as espécies e, portanto, esta técnica pode ser utilizada para avaliar as propriedades mecânicas da madeira submetidas a este processo.

ABSTRACT The analysis of the transverse vibrations has the potential to evaluate the wood due to its high precision, low cost and quickly, however there are few studies about its use in heat treated wood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of heat-treated Eucalyptus urophylla and Pinus oocarpa wood and relate the analysis of resonance (Bing) with the modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture of wood. Three Eucalyptus urophylla and Pinus oocarpa trees were used and specimens were prepared and heat-treated at 150, 175, 200 and 225°C with a heating rate of 5°C/ min, four hours of residence time at atmospheric pressure and the presence of air. The heat treatment reduced the volumetric swelling, linear swelling, anisotropy factor, equilibrium moisture content and mechanical strength of the wood in both species. The resonance analysis (Bing) showed a high correlation with the static modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture in heat-treated wood for both species, thus, this technique can be used to evaluate the mechanical properties during this process.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as propriedades físicas e mecânicas de painéis OSB produzidos com adesivos comerciais e tânico deStryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville. Os adesivos comerciais ureia formaldeído (UF), fenol formaldeído (FF) e os taninos daAcacia mearnsi foram obtidos por doação por respectivas empresas produtoras, enquanto que o tanino de barbatimão foi obtido em laboratório. Todos adesivos tiveram as propriedades dos adesivos determinadas. Foram produzidos painéis OSB com os adesivos ureia-formaldeído, fenol-formaldeído, tanino-formaldeído a partir da acácia e do barbatimão. Os painéis foram produzidos com partículas do tipo strand, geradas a partir da madeira de pinus, com teor de adesivo de 8% a uma pressão de 40 kgf.cm-2, um tempo e temperatura de prensagem de 8 min e 160°C, respectivamente. Em todas as propriedades avaliadas, o desempenho dos painéis produzidos com adesivo tânico de barbatimão foi melhor quando comparado com o dos painéis produzidos com o adesivo tânico de acácia. Os painéis produzidos com os adesivos UF, FF e tânico de barbatimão atenderam a todos os prerrequisitos estipulados pela norma de comercialização. Tal fato demonstra grande potencial de utilização dos taninos de barbatimão para produção de painéis OSB.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of OSB (Oriented Strand Board) panels produced with commercial adhesives and tannic adhesive from Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville. The commercial adhesives, urea formaldehyde (UF), phenol formaldehyde (FF) and Acacia mearnsi tannin were obtained by donation by respective manufacturing companies, while the tannins of barbatimao were obtained in the laboratory. The adhesives had the adhesives properties determined. OSB panels were produced, with the adhesives urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde, tannin-formaldehyde from Acacia and Stryphnodendron . The panels were produced with strand particles generated from pine wood with an adhesive content of 8% at a 40 kgf.cm-2 of pressure, a time and pressing temperature of 8 minutes and 160°C, respectively. In all of the properties evaluated, the performance of the panels made with tannic adhesive from barbatimão was better when compared to panels manufactured with the tannic adhesive from acacia. The panels produced with urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde and tannic adhesive of barbatimão met all requirements stipulated by the marketing standard. Fact that shows great use potential for tannin of barbatimão for OSB panels production.

A estocagem ao ar livre é o método mais utilizado de secagem de madeira para produção de carvão. Todavia, a secagem natural de toras é pouco estudada. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a interação entre estocagem e propriedades energéticas da madeira e do carvão. Toras de 1,2 m de comprimento, retiradas dos troncos a 1,3 m do solo, de dez diferentes materiais genéticos, foram utilizadas. As carbonizações ocorreram em mufla após um, dois e três meses de estocagem, à taxa de aquecimento de 1,67ºC/min, temperatura máxima de 450ºC e tempo de residência de 30 minutos. O poder calorífico da madeira, o rendimento gravimétrico na base seca e úmida, a análise química imediata e o poder calorífico do carvão foram avaliados. O poder calorífico líquido da madeira aumentou após a estocagem e, baseado neste parâmetro, o tempo ótimo de estocagem variou entre dois e três meses para os diferentes materiais. Considerando-se a carbonização, apenas o rendimento gravimétrico na base úmida foi afetado pela estocagem. A secagem foi importante para reduzir a umidade da madeira, favorecendo seu uso para energia.

The storage of logs in outdoors areas is the most commonly used wood drying method for charcoal production; however, studies on outdoor drying of logs are still scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of storage time on the energetic properties of wood and charcoal. Logs of 1.2 meters in length extracted from trunks of 10 different clones at 1.3 m above ground level were used in this study. Carbonization in muffle furnace occurred after one, two and three months of storage at a heating rate of 1.67 ºC, maximum temperature of 450 ºC, and residence time of 30 minutes. Wood calorific value, gravimetric yields on dry and wet bases, chemical analysis, and charcoal calorific value were evaluated. The net calorific value of wood increased with storage time; the optimum storage time ranged between two and three months for different materials. Among the carbonization parameters, only the gravimetric yield on wet basis changed with storage time. Drying was important to reduce wood moisture, favoring its use for energy production.

Neste trabalho, estudaram-se o desenvolvimento e a reprodução de Dirphia moderata Bouvier, 1919 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) alimentada com Eucalyptus cloeziana F. Muell ou Psidium guajava L. Os períodos de pré-oviposição, oviposição e incubação e a viabilidade e número de ovos por fêmea foram de 6,71 ± 0,18 dia; 4,00 ± 0,66 dia; 18,14 ± 0,18 dia; 17,54 ± 3,78%; 121,71 ± 18,96% para esse inseto com E. cloeziana e de 3,86 ± 0,26 dia; 5,86 ± 0,40 dia; 17,71 ± 0,21 dia; 23,12 ± 10,81%; 112,00 ± 8,79% com P. guajava, respectivamente. A duração e viabilidade larval (%) foram de 53,00 ± 0,09 e 80,00 ± 0,99 e de 55,83 ± 0,29 e de 77,5 ± 6,60 para lagartas de D. moderata criadas nos primeiro e segundo hospedeiros, respectivamente. A duração e viabilidade das fases de pré-pupa e pupa foram de 4,84 ± 0,07 dia e 96,88 ± 3,13% e de 37,64 ± 1,20 dia e 84,37 ± 6,53% com E. cloeziana e de 3,82 ± 0,06 dia e 100% e de 49,93 ± 2,04 dias e 75,00 ± 7,79% com P. guajava, respectivamente. A razão sexual de D. moderata foi de 0,48 e 0,46 e a longevidade, de 6,78 e 8,84 dias para machos e de 10,23 e 10,07 dias para fêmeas desse inseto com E. cloeziana e P. guajava, respectivamente. D. moderata apresentou melhor desenvolvimento e reprodução em E. cloeziana, mas P. guajava pode, também, ser utilizado para a criação desse inseto em laboratório.

This work studied the development and reproduction of Dirphia moderata Bouvier, 1919 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) fed on Eucalyptus cloeziana F. Muell or Psidium guajava L. The periods of pre-oviposition, oviposition and egg incubation as well as viability and number of eggs per female were 6.71 ± 0.18 days; 4.00 ± 0.66 days; 18.14 ± 0.18 days; 17.54 ± 3.78%; 121.71 ± 18.96 for this insect on E. cloeziana and 3.86 ± 0.26 days; 5.86 ± 0.40 days; 17.71 ± 0.21 days; 23.12 ± 10.81%; 112.00 ± 8.79 on P. guajava, respectively. Larva stage duration and viability (%) were 53.00 ± 0.09 and 80.00 ± 0.99 and 55.83 ± 0.29 and 77.5 ± 6.60 for caterpillars of D. moderata reared with the first and second hosts, respectively. Duration and viability of the pre-pupa and pupa stages were 4.84 ± 0.07 days and 96.88 ± 3.13% and 37.64 ± 1.20 days and 84.37 ± 6.53% on E. cloeziana and 3.82 ± 0.06 days and 100.00% and 49.93 ± 2.04 days and 75.00 ± 7.79% on P. guajava, respectively. Sex rate of D. moderata was 0.48 and 0.46 and longevity was 6.78 and 8.84 days for males and 10.23 and 10.07 days for females when this insect fed on E. cloeziana and P. guajava, respectively. Dirphia moderata presented better development and reproduction with E. cloeziana but P. guajava can also be used to rear this insect in the laboratory.
