ABSTRACT Purpose To identify the behavioral tests used to assess auditory processing throughout adulthood, focusing on the characteristics of the target population as an interest group. Research strategies PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Scielo, databases were searched with descriptors: “auditory perception” or “auditory perception disorders” or “auditory processing” or “central auditory processing” or “auditory processing disorders” or “central auditory processing disorders” with adults OR aging. Selection criteria Studies with humans included, the adult population from 18 to 64 years old, who performed at least one behavioral test to assess auditory processing in the absence of hearing loss. Data analysis Data extraction was performed independently, using a protocol developed by the authors that included different topics, mainly the behavioral auditory tests performed and the results found. Results Of the 867 records identified, 24 contained the information needed to answer the survey questions. Conclusion Almost all studies were conducted verify performance in one or two auditory processing tests. The target target population was heterogeneous, with the most frequent persons with diabetes, stuttering, auditory processing disorder, and noise exposure. There is little information regarding benchmarks for testing in the respective age groups.

RESUMO Objetivo Identificar os testes comportamentais utilizados para a avaliação do processamento auditivo ao longo da vida adulta, com enfoque nas características da população alvo enquanto grupo de interesse. Estratégia de pesquisa As bases de dados consultadas foram o PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science e Scielo, a partir dos descritores: “auditory perception” or “auditory perception disorders” or “auditory processing” or “central auditory processing” or “auditory processing disorders” or “central auditory processing disorders” com adults OR aging. Critérios de seleção Incluiu-se estudos com humanos, que abordaram a população adulta de 18 a 64 anos, que realizaram pelo menos um teste comportamental para avaliação do processamento auditivo, na ausência de perda auditiva. Análise dos dados Realizou-se a extração de dados de forma independente, a partir de um protocolo desenvolvido pelos autores incluindo diferentes tópicos, principalmente os testes auditivos comportamentais realizados e os resultados encontrados. Resultados Dos 867 registros identificados, 24 foram selecionados como contendo as informações necessárias para responder às perguntas de pesquisa. Conclusão Quase a totalidade dos estudos foi conduzida com objetivo de verificar o desempenho em um ou dois testes de processamento auditivo; a população alvo foi heterogênea, as mais frequentes foram diabetes, gagueira, transtorno do processamento auditivo e exposição ao ruído. Há poucas informações sobre os padrões de referência para os testes na respectiva faixa etária.

ABSTRACT Purpose To investigate complaints of difficulty understanding speech in the presence of noise in subjects without hearing loss and their performance on a speech-in-noise test. Methods Thirty-nine subjects aged 18 to 59 years and 11 months were divided into four groups according to their decade of life. They underwent audiometry, tympanometry, auditory processing tests, the Mini-Mental State Examination, a self-report on auditory perception combined with the Amsterdam Inventory for Auditory Disability and Handicap (Pt-AIADH), and a sentence test in silence and in noise. Results All groups scored high on the Pt-AIADH domains, with the highest average score obtained for the noise intelligibility domain. There were differences between G18 vs. G40, G18 vs. G50, and G30 vs. G50 for auditory self-perception in noise intelligibility, and differences between the youngest and all other groups on the speech-in-noise test in particular, with a lower signal-to-noise ratio for older adults. We also identified a moderate and significant correlation between intelligibility in noise and the speech-in-noise test. Conclusion Normal hearers of all age groups complained of intelligibility in noise. We found that the higher an individual’s auditory difficulty in this domain, the worse their performance on the speech-in-noise test; this is especially true for middle-aged adults.

RESUMO Objetivo Investigar a queixa de dificuldade de inteligibilidade na presença de ruído, em sujeitos sem perda auditiva e compará-la com o desempenho em um teste de fala no ruído. Método A casuística foi constituída por 39 sujeitos de 18 a 59 anos e 11 meses foram divididos em quatro grupos em função da década de vida. Estes foram submetidos à audiometria, timpanometria, testes de processamento auditivo, mini exame do estado mental, autorrelato da percepção auditiva com o Pt-AIADH e a um teste de sentenças no silêncio e no ruído. Resultados Todos os grupos pontuaram para os domínios do Pt-AIADH, com maior pontuação média para o domínio de inteligibilidade no ruído. Houve diferenças entre o G18 vs G40, G18 vs G50, e G30 vs G50 para a autopercepção auditiva na inteligibilidade no ruído; e diferenças entre o G18 e os demais grupos no teste de fala com ruído, com menor relação sinal-ruído para os adultos mais velhos. Houve correlação moderada e significativa para a inteligibilidade no ruído e o teste de fala no ruído. Conclusão Normo-ouvintes de todas as faixas etárias estudadas apresentaram queixa de inteligibilidade no ruído. Quanto maior a dificuldade auditiva neste domínio pior o desempenho no teste de fala com ruído, sendo mais significativo em adultos de meia idade.

Abstract Introduction The number of stimuli is important to determine the quality of auditory evoked potential records. However, there is no consensus on that number in studies, especially in the sample studied. Objectives To investigate the influence of the number of rare stimuli on forming N2 and P3 components, with different types of acoustic stimuli. Methods Cross-sectional, descriptive, comparative study, approved by the ethics committee of the institution. The sample comprised 20 normal hearing adults of both sexes, aged 18 to 29 years old, with normal scores in the mental state examination and auditory processing skills. The event-related auditory evoked potentials were performed with nonverbal (1 kHz versus 2 kHz) and verbal stimuli (/BA/ versus /DA/). The number of rare stimuli varied randomly in the recordings, with 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 presentations. Results P3 latency was significantly higher for nonverbal stimuli with 50 rare stimuli. N2 latency did not show any difference between the type and number of stimuli. The absolute P3 and N2-P3 amplitudes showed significant differences for both types of stimuli, with higher amplitude for 10 rare stimuli, in contrast with the other ones. The linear tendency test indicated significance only for the amplitude – as the number of rare stimuli increased, the amplitude tended to decrease. Conclusion The components were identifiable in the different numbers of rare stimuli and types of stimuli. The P3 and N2-P3 latency and amplitude increased with fewer verbal and nonverbal stimuli. Recording protocols must consider the number of rare stimuli.

Resumo Introdução Medidas de resultados relatados pelo paciente, inventários e/ou questionários, permitem que os pacientes apresentem suas perspectivas do impacto de sua condição no dia a dia, independentemente da análise dos resultados dos testes realizados pelo especialista. Esses instrumentos são recomendados quando há evidências que mostram sua confiabilidade, validade e sensibilidade. Existem medidas de resultados relatados pelo paciente padronizadas para a audição em língua inglesa; no entanto, esses instrumentos não existem em outras línguas. Objetivo Adaptar o Amsterdam inventory for auditory disability and handicap para o português brasileiro e avaliar suas medidas de validação. Método Realizamos dois estudos. No estudo 1, traduzimos e adaptamos o Amsterdam inventory for auditory disability and handicap para o português brasileiro de acordo com as diretrizes de boas práticas; inclusive a fase de pré-teste. No estudo 2, aplicamos a versão em português em adultos com e sem perda auditiva (n = 31 e 18, respectivamente) e analisamos as medidas de validação, confiabilidade e reprodutibilidade do instrumento. Além disso, calculamos a correlação entre os limiares de tons puros e os escores do questionário. Resultados Os resultados obtidos no estudo 1 demonstraram a viabilidade do processo de tradução e adaptação cultural do instrumento, assim como sua aplicabilidade, proporcionaram a versão em português da Amsterdam inventory for auditory disability and handicap. No estudo 2, os resultados revelaram valores de constructo para as questões e domínios, bem como para o escore total confiável. A condição de teste-reteste intraentrevistador mostrou excelente reprodutibilidade (CCI = 0,97). Por fim, houve forte correlação positiva (r = 0,83) entre o limiar médio de tom puro e os valores das dificuldades auditivas, medidos pelos escores do instrumento. Conclusão A versão em inglês do Amsterdam inventory for auditory disability and handicap foi traduzida e adaptada para o português brasileiro. Uma análise do processo de validação produziu resultados confiáveis, consistentes e estáveis.

Abstract Introduction Patient-reported outcome measures, inventory and or questionnaire, allow patients to present their perspective of the impact of their individual condition on a day-to-day basis, independent of the analysis of test results by the expert clinician. Outcome measures are recommended when there is evidence showing their reliability, validity and sensitivity. There are standardized patient-reported outcome measures for hearing in English language; however, other languages lack these instruments. Objective Adapt the Amsterdam inventory for auditory disability and handicap to Brazilian Portuguese and analyze its validation measures. Methods We conducted two studies. In Study 1, we translated and adapted the Amsterdam inventory for auditory disability and handicap to Brazilian Portuguese according to good practice guidelines; this included the pre-test stage. In Study 2, we administered the Portuguese version to adults with and without hearing loss (n = 31 and 18, respectively) and analyzed the measures of instrument validation, reliability, and reproducibility. Moreover, we calculated the correlation between pure tone thresholds and scores on the questionnaire. Results The results obtained in Study 1 demonstrated the feasibility of the translation process and the instrument's cultural adaptation, as well as its applicability, resulting in the Portuguese version of the Amsterdam inventory for auditory disability and handicap. In Study 2, the results revealed construct values for the questions and domains, as well as for the total reliable score. The intra-interviewer test-retest condition showed excellent reproducibility (ICC = 0.97). Finally, there was a strong positive correlation (r = 0.83) between the mean pure tone threshold and the hearing difficulties values, as measured by the instrument's scores. Conclusion The English version of the Amsterdam inventory for auditory disability and handicap could be translated and adapted to Brazilian Portuguese. An analyses of the validation process yielded reliable, consistent, and stable results.

RESUMO Objetivo: identificar as abordagens de treinamento auditivo utilizadas na população infantil com diagnósticos psiquiátricos, caracterizar os contextos de intervenção, protocolos e discernimento dos desfechos. Métodos: busca realizada em quatro bases de dados, utilizando as expressões fixas “auditory training” OR “auditory rehabilitation” e, quanto à amostragem, variaram-se aos mais comuns diagnósticos, sinais e sintomas. Foram selecionados artigos publicados até agosto de 2018, com população sem perda auditiva e excluídos artigos com amostra com uso de dispositivos de amplificação sonora, otites ou diagnóstico isolado de Transtorno do Processamento Auditivo. Resultados: foram identificadas 103 referências, dentre as quais 16 preencheram os critérios de inclusão. As amostragens estudadas foram de crianças e adolescentes com distúrbios de aprendizagem, linguagem e leitura, dislexia, transtorno do déficit de atenção e hiperatividade, transtorno do espectro autista e esquizofrenia. As intervenções com a abordagem bottom-up e combinada (bottom-up e top-down), no contexto formal, foram as mais frequentes, cujos resultados direcionaram a melhora em habilidades auditivas, linguísticas e metalinguísticas. O número e frequência de sessões, assim como, a duração (tempo) foram diversificadas. Conclusão: a heterogeneidade das técnicas de treinamento auditivo diversificou os resultados, entretanto, parece existir um potencial para recomendação do treinamento auditivo na população abordada.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to identify auditory training approaches used in the pediatric population with psychiatric diagnoses and to characterize the contexts in which the intervention took place, as well as protocols and discernment of the results. Methods: a search was carried out in four databases, using the fixed terms "auditory training" OR "auditory rehabilitation". Regarding the sampling, there was a considerable range of diagnoses, signs and symptoms, including the most common ones. Articles published until August 2018 whose population did not present hearing loss were selected; articles whose subjects had made use of any personal sound amplification products, presented otitis or had any isolated diagnosis of auditory processing disorder, were excluded. Results: 16 articles out of the 103 references found, met the inclusion criteria. The samplings studied were children and adolescents with learning, language or reading disorders, dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. The bottom-up intervention and the combined approach (bottom-up and top-down), in the formal context, were the most frequent approaches, whose results led to the improvement in linguistic, metalinguistic and auditory skills. The amount and frequency of sessions, as well as their duration varied. Conclusion: the heterogeneity of auditory training techniques diversified the results. However, it seems there is a potential for recommending auditory training in the reviewed population.

RESUMO Objetivo identificar as terminologias mais utilizadas para designar o comportamento desproporcional a determinados sons (CDS) no TEA e sua relação com as respectivas ferramentas para sua investigação, assim como sua ocorrência e desfechos. Estratégia de pesquisa Foram utilizadas as bases de dados: PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scielo e Lilacs. As palavras-chave utilizadas foram “autism”, “hyperacusis” e “auditoryperception”, com as seguintes combinações: “autism AND hyperacusis” e “autism AND auditoryperception”. Critérios de seleção Foram incluídos os trabalhos com diagnóstico de TEA, de qualquer faixa etária; resumo disponível; Artigos em inglês, espanhol e português brasileiro; série de casos, estudos de prevalência e incidência, coorte e ensaios clínicos. Análise dos dados Foram analisados estudos com sujeitos com diagnóstico de TEA de qualquer faixa etária; referência no título e/ou resumo da ocorrência do CDS, aceitando os termos hiper-responsividade, hipersensibilidade e hiperacusia; resumo disponível; artigos em inglês, espanhol e português brasileiro; série de casos, estudos de prevalência e incidência, coorte e ensaios clínicos. Resultados Dos 692 estudos resultantes da consulta, foram identificados 13 que atendiam aos requisitos estabelecidos. Conclusão O termo hipersensibilidade auditiva foi o mais empregado para designar o CDS, seguido da hiperacusia. Não houve relação entre os termos e a respectiva ferramenta de investigação, sendo os questionários os mais utilizados para designar o referido comportamento, cuja frequência relatada foi de 42,1% a 69,0%. Os testes auditivos, quando realizados, mostraram o envolvimento das vias neurais auditivas, aferente e eferente.

ABSTRACT Purpose this paper aims to identify the most used terminologies to designate the disproportional behavior to sounds in the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and its relationship with the respective tools for its investigation, as well as its occurrence and outcomes. Research strategies the databases used were PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scielo and Lilacs. The keywords used were “autism”, “hyperacusis” and “auditory perception”, with the following combinations: “autism AND hyperacusis” and “autism AND auditory perception”. Selection criteria individuals diagnosed with ASD of any age group; available abstract; papers in English, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese; case series, prevalence and incidence studies, cohort and clinical trials. Data analysis we analyzed studies with individuals diagnosed with ASD of any age group; reference in the title and/or summary of the occurrence of disproportional behavior to sounds, accepting the terms hyper-responsiveness, hypersensitivity and hyperacusis; summary available; papers in English, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese; series of cases, prevalence and incidence studies, cohort and clinical trials. Results Of the 692 studies resulting from the consultation, 13 studies could achieve the established requirements. Conclusion The term auditory hypersensitivity was the most commonly used to designate disproportional behavior to sounds, followed by hyperacusis. There was no relationship between the terms and the respective research tool, and the questionnaires were the most used to designate the referred behavior, whose reported frequency was from 42.1% to 69.0%. The auditory behavior tests when performed showed the involvement of the auditory, afferent and efferent neural pathways.

RESUMO Objetivo: caracterizar as similaridades e diferenças do registro das componentes P1 e N1 para os estímulos verbal e não verbal, em uma população adulta, para fins de referência. Métodos: foram estudados 21 sujeitos adultos jovens, eutróficos, de ambos os sexos. O potencial evocado auditivo de longa latência foi pesquisado com estimulação bilateral e registro simultâneo das duas orelhas, com o estímulo clique e a sílaba /da/. Resultados: a N1 foi identificada em 100,0% da população, para os estímulos clique e fala, enquanto que a P1 foi observada em 85,7% e 95,2% dos sujeitos, para os respectivos estímulos. Foram observadas diferenças significantes para a amplitude de P1 e N1 entre as orelhas (p <0.05), sendo na P1 os valores da esquerda superiores à direita e para N1 foi o inverso. Entre os estímulos os valores de amplitude e latência da N1 foram maiores para a fala, enquanto na P1, apenas a latência obteve resultados distintos. Conclusão: a componente N1 foi a mais frequente. Apenas para N1 a diferença entre os tipos de estímulos ocorreram para latência e amplitude, o que pode ser justificado pelo seu papel no processo da discriminação de fala.

ABSTRACT Purpose: this study aimed at illustrating the similarities and differences in the recording of components P1 and N1 for verbal and non-verbal stimuli, in an adult sample population, for reference purposes. Methods: twenty-one adult, eutrophic individuals of both sexes were recruited for this study. The long-latency auditory evoked potential was detected by bilateral stimulation in both ears, using simultaneous recording, with non-verbal stimuli and the syllable /da/. Results: for non-verbal and speech stimuli, N1 was identified in 100.0% of the participants, whereas P1 was observed in 85.7% and 95.2% individuals for non-verbal and speech stimuli, respectively. Significant differences were observed for the P1 and N1 amplitudes between the ears (p <0.05); the P1 component, in the left ear, was higher than that in the right ear, whereas the N1 component was higher in the right one. Regarding the stimuli, the amplitude and latency values of N1 were higher for speech, whereas in P1, different results were obtained only in latency. Conclusion: the N1 component was the most frequently detected one. Differences in latency and amplitude for each stimuli occurred only for N1, which can be justified by its role in the process of speech discrimination.

RESUMO Objetivo: estudar e caracterizar os desvios anteroposteriores e angulares da Prova de Unterberger-Fukuda (PUF) em função do resultado da prova calórica, em sujeitos com queixa de tontura e ou vertigem. Métodos: foram avaliados 44 sujeitos, de ambos os sexos, com idade entre 20 a 79 anos, com queixa de vertigem e ou tontura, encaminhados para exame de vectoeletronistagmografia. Os critérios de exclusão foram a identificação de dificuldades de marcha decorrentes de alterações ortopédicas e ou de coluna, assim como síndromes e doenças neurológicas que afetam o equilíbrio. Foram realizados dois procedimentos, a PUF e o exame de vectonistagmografia. Resultados: na prova calórica o tipo de alteração mais frequente foi a hiporreflexia 25,00%, da casuística total. Para o resultado da PUF apenas 2,30% apresentou resultados alterados no deslocamento anteroposterior, de olhos abertos, na etapa de olhos fechados o mesmo tipo de ocorrência foi de 31,80%. O desvio anteroposterior mostrou maior correlação com o aumento da idade, em relação ao do tipo angular. Houve associação entre os resultados alterados na prova calórica e a PUF. Conclusão: os resultados da PUF de olhos fechados apresentaram associação com a prova calórica, o desvio do tipo anteroposterior esteve correlacionado ao aumento da idade, o angular não.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to study and characterize anteroposterior and angular deviations in the Unterberger-Fukuda Test (UFT) in relation to the results of the caloric tests in patients complaining of dizziness or vertigo. Methods: 44 subjects-men and women between 20 and 79 years of age-who had symptoms of vertigo or dizziness and had been referred for vectoelectronystagmography were examined. The exclusion criteria were gait difficulties arising from orthopedic and/or spinal disorders, and syndromes or neurological diseases that affect balance. Two procedures were performed: vectoelectronystagmography and UFT. Results: the caloric test showed that 25.00% of the patients had hyporeflexia-the most frequent result. In the open-eyes UFT, only 2.30% presented altered results in anteroposterior displacement. In the closed-eyes test, the equivalent value was 31.80%. Anteroposterior deviation showed a greater correlation with age than the angular one. Abnormal results in the caloric test were associated with the UFT. Conclusion: the results of the closed-eyes UFT were associated with the caloric test. Anteroposterior deviation was correlated with age, while angular deviation was not.

RESUMO Objetivo Identificar os efeitos da ingestão de álcool na gestação sobre o sistema nervoso auditivo central em relação aos seus possíveis diagnósticos, Síndrome Fetal do Álcool, Síndrome Fetal do Álcool Parcial, Distúrbios ao Nascimento Relacionados ao Álcool e Distúrbio do Neurodesenvolvimento Relacionado ao Álcool, sua extensão e o método de avaliação auditiva. Estratégia de pesquisa Busca sistemática e integrativa nas bases de dados PubMed, LILACS e SciELO, com os termos em português e inglês “síndrome fetal do álcool”, “desordens relacionadas ao uso do álcool” associadas a “audição”. Critérios de seleção Dos 123 resumos identificados, foram seis selecionados, publicados até maio de 2015. Análise dos dados Foram elencados tópicos a serem respondidos, caracterização da casuística; o diagnóstico decorrente da exposição fetal nas crianças; método de avaliação auditiva; e resultados descritos. Resultados Entre as avaliações comportamentais, foram utilizados os testes dicóticos verbais com sílabas e com sentenças e o teste fala com ruído. Entre os testes eletrofisiológicos, no Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Tronco Encefálico, foi detectada alteração de sincronia neural, e no Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Longa Latência – P300, valores de latência precoces. Conclusão Existem evidências de que as crianças e adultos jovens expostos ao álcool na gestação apresentam sinais de comprometimento do sistema nervoso auditivo central, mas não foi possível caracterizar essas alterações nos diferentes subtipos diagnósticos do espectro. As vias auditivas corticais foram as mais investigadas e o método eletrofisiológico o mais utilizado, com um resultado inesperado em dois deles, a latência precoce da N2 e da P300.

ABSTRACT Purpose To identify the effects of alcohol intake during pregnancy on the central auditory nervous system in relation to their possible diagnosis, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, partial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Alcohol-Related Birth Defects and Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder, his extension and the hearing assessment method. Research strategy Systematic and integrative review searched the databases PubMed, LILACS and SciELO, with terms in Portuguese and English “fetal alcohol syndrome”, “alcohol-related disorders” associated with “hearing”. Selection criteria: We identified 123 abstracts, six were selected and published until May 2015. Data analysis Were listed topics to be answered, characterization of the sample; the diagnosis result of fetal exposure; method of hearing assessment and described results. Results Among the behavioral assessments, Verbal Dichotic Tests with syllables and sentences and Speech in Noise Test, were used. Among the electrophysiological tests, the Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential was detected change neural synchrony, and Long-Latency Auditory Evoked Potential – P300, early latency values. Conclusion There is evidence that children exposed to alcohol in utero present central auditory nervous system involvement signals, but it was not possible to identify the influence of different subtypes and their losses. Cortical auditory pathways were the most investigated and the electrophysiological method as used with an unexpected result in two of them, early N2 and P300 latency.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the latency and amplitude of P300 responses obtained with electrodes positioned at Cz and Fz and in different tasks of infrequent stimulus identification in normal hearing individuals. Methods Forty adults of both genders participated in the study. Three recordings with three different tasks were obtained for the identification of the infrequent stimulus; simultaneous recordings were obtained from Cz and Fz positions. Results Cz position showed significantly greater amplitudes and lower latencies than Fz. Regarding the three tasks, only “pronouncing the word ’thin’” was different from “raising a finger”, with lowest latencies for the verbal task. Regarding amplitude, significantly higher values were observed for “raising a finger”, followed by “pronouncing the word ‘thin’” and mental counting. Conclusion Cz obtained the best values, highest amplitude and lowest latency. Lowest latencies were obtained for the task of “pronouncing the word ‘thin’” and the highest amplitudes were obtained for “raising a finger”.

OBJETIVO: Estudar as habilidades auditivas temporais de ordenação e resolução em crianças sem e com antecedentes de otite média com efusão precoce e recorrente, assim como estudar as repostas em função da idade. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliadas 59 crianças, todas com limiares tonais dentro da normalidade no momento da realização dos testes auditivos. As crianças foram divididas em dois grupos, de acordo com a ocorrência ou não de episódios de otite média com efusão recorrente. Em um segundo momento, cada um dos grupos foi subdividido em dois subgrupos em função da idade: 7 e 8, e 9 e 10 anos. Todas as crianças foram avaliadas com os testes temporais de padrão de frequência (ordenação) e Gap-In-Noise (resolução). RESULTADOS: As crianças com antecedentes de otite média apresentaram resultados inferiores, de forma significativa, quando comparados ao grupo controle, para as habilidades temporais estudadas. No teste de padrão de frequência, as respostas corretas aumentaram em função da idade nos dois grupos. No teste de identificação de intervalos de silêncio, não houve alteração no limiar em função da idade no grupo controle, mas houve para o grupo com antecedente de otite média. CONCLUSÃO: Episódios de otite média com efusão, ainda no primeiro ano de vida, recorrentes e persistentes em idade pré-escolar e escolar, influenciam negativamente as habilidades temporais de ordenação e resolução.

PURPOSE: To study the temporal auditory ordering and resolution abilities in children with and without a history of early OME and ROME, as well as to study the responses according to age. METHODS: A total of 59 children were evaluated, and all of them presented pure tone thresholds within the normal range at the time of the conduction of the hearing tests. The children were divided into two groups according to the occurrence of episodes of recurrent otitis media. Then, each group was divided into two subgroups according to age: 7- and 8-year olds, and 9- and 10-year olds. All children were assessed with standard tests of temporal frequency (ordination) and gaps-in-noise (resolution). RESULTS: For the temporal abilities studied, children with a history of otitis media presented significantly lower results compared to the control group. In the frequency pattern test, the correct answers increased with age in both groups. In the identification of silence intervals, the control group showed no change in threshold regarding to age, but this change was present in the group with a history of otitis media. CONCLUSION: Episodes of otitis media with effusion in the first year of life, recurrent and persistent in preschool and school ages, negatively influence the temporal ordering and resolution abilities.

OBJETIVO: Identificar se existe correlação entre ruído ambiental no interior da sala de aula, intensidade da voz e presença de alteração vocal em professores. MÉTODOS: Foi realizada medição do ruído ambiental em dez salas de escolas municipais de ensino fundamental. A intensidade das vozes das professoras foi medida durante atividade de ensino. Amostras de vogal prolongada [é] e contagem de 1 a 20 emitidas pelas professoras foram analisadas utilizando escala GRBASI. Os resultados obtidos foram correlacionados. RESULTADOS: A média de ruído ambiental sem a presença das crianças em sala de aula variou de 40 a 51 dB(A) e com a presença das crianças de 45 a 65 dB(A). Entre as professoras, houve 70% de ocorrência de vozes alteradas no grau geral (G) e 90% com tensão na voz (S), variando entre graus discreto e moderado. Constatou-se variação entre 52 dB(A) e 68 dB(A) na intensidade da voz das professoras, atingindo 7,48 dB(A) acima do nível do ruído ambiental. Houve correlação entre a intensidade vocal das professoras e ruído ambiental na presença das crianças durante a aula. CONCLUSÃO: Os níveis de ruído ambiental em sala de aula são altos e se correlacionam com o aumento da intensidade das vozes das professoras. Embora com alta ocorrência de vozes alteradas, não é possível correlacioná-las com o nível de ruído ambiental.

PURPOSE: To explore the existence of correlations between environmental noise in classrooms, voice intensity and teacher's vocal problems. METHODS: Environmental noise was measured in 10 classrooms of municipal elementary schools; the intensity of teachers' voice was measured during teaching practice; teachers' speech samples containing emissions of sustained vowel [é] and counting from 1 to 20 were analyzed using the GRBASI protocol; and the results were tested for correlation. RESULTS: The average of environmental noise varied from 40 to 51 dB(A) without the presence of children in the classroom, and from 45 to 65 dB(A) with the presence of children. Among teachers, there was 70% of vocal problems (G) and 90% of vocal strain (S) varying from moderate to mild degrees. The intensity of teachers' voice varied from 52 dB(A) to 68 dB(A), reaching 7.48 dB(A) above the environmental noise. There was a significant correlation between the intensity of teachers' voice and the environmental noise during the class in the presence of children. CONCLUSION: There were high levels of environmental noise in the classrooms, which correlated with the intensity of teachers' voice (SPL). Although there was high occurrence of vocal problems in this sample, they were not correlated with the level of environmental noise.

A síndrome G/BBB é uma condição rara, caracterizada por hipertelorismo, fissura de lábio e palato e hipospádia. Não foram encontrados trabalhos sobre a audição em indivíduos com esta síndrome. OBJETIVO: Investigar a função auditiva em pacientes com síndrome G/BBB quanto à ocorrência ou não de perda auditiva e a condução nervosa auditiva periférica e central. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Catorze pacientes de 7 a 34 anos, do gênero masculino, com a síndrome G/BBB, foram avaliados por meio de otoscopia, audiometria, timpanometria e potenciais evocados auditivos de tronco encefálico (PEATE). Forma de Estudo: Estudo de série clínico prospectivo. RESULTADOS: Limiares audiométricos normais em 12 (66,7%) pacientes da amostra e alterados em dois (33,3%), sendo um com perda condutiva e um neurossensorial. Quanto ao PEATE, foram encontrados: latências absolutas da onda I normais em todos os pacientes, aumento das latências absolutas da onda III e V em dois e seis pacientes respectivamente; latências interpicos I-III, III-V e I-V aumentadas em quatro, três e oito pacientes, respectivamente. CONCLUSÃO: Perdas auditivas periféricas podem ocorrer na síndrome G/BBB. Há evidências de comprometimento das vias auditivas centrais em nível do tronco encefálico. Estudos com exames de imagem são necessários para maior clareza dos achados clínicos.

The G/BBB syndrome is a rare condition characterized by hypertelorism, cleft lip and palate, and hypospadias. No studies were found on the hearing of individuals with this syndrome. AIM: To investigate the auditory function in patients with G/BBB syndrome, such as the occurrence of hearing loss, and central and peripheral auditory nerve conduction. METHODS: Fourteen male patients aged 7-34 years with the G/BBB syndrome were assessed by otoscopy, audiometry, tympanometry and evoked auditory brainstem response (ABR). Model: A retrospective clinical series study. RESULTS: Audiometric thresholds were normal in 12 (66.7%) of the sample and altered in two (33.3%), one with conductive and one with sensorineural loss. ABR resuts were: all patients had normal absolute wave I latencies; absolute wave III and V latencies were increased in two and six patients, respectively; interpeak latencies I-III, IV and V interpeak latencies were increased in four, three and eight patients respectively. CONCLUSION: Hearing loss can occur in the G/BBB syndrome. There is evidence of central auditory pathway involvement in the brainstem. Imaging studies are needed to clarify the clinical findings.
