RESUMO O óleo volátil da melaleuca (Melaleuca alternifolia Maiden & Betche, Cheel) possui atividade antimicrobiana podendo causar efeitos sobre as plantas. Avaliou-se a inibição do óleo em Cercospora beticolaSacc., e seu efeito no aumento da produção e qualidade de raízes de beterraba. As doses foram de 0,13; 0,67; 0,80 e 1,00% do óleo, além das testemunhas composta pelo meio de cultura Batata Dextrose Ágar (BDA) no experimento in vitro, e água no experimento in vivo. As plantas foram pulverizadas duas vezes por semana. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado, com 4 repetições, e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. O índice de infecção das folhas foi determinado por escala diagramática além do peso e diâmetro das raízes. Os resultados de inibição do crescimento micelial para as doses do óleo foram 0; 56; 87; 83 e 99%, e os índices de infecção: 77,08; 35,62; 21,04; 19,37 e 20,00%, respectivamente, para a testemunha e as doses 0,13; 0,67; 0,80 e 1,00% do óleo. Somente na concentração de 0,80% o óleo proporcionou relação positiva entre o ganho de peso e o diâmetro das raízes. O óleo de Melaleuca foi eficaz no controle de C. beticola e, como consequência, houve produção de raízes de beterraba com melhor desenvolvimento.

ABSTRACT The volatile oil from Melaleuca (Melaleuca alternifolia Maiden & Betche Cheel.) has antimicrobial properties and can promote several effects on plant cultivation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibition of the oil in Cercospora beticola Sacc. and if it favors the growth and development of beet root. The doses were 0.13, 0.67, 0.8 and 1% of oil, besides the control PDA (potato-dextrose-agar) in vitro (laboratory condition) and with water as treatment control in vivo (field conditions). The plants were sprayed twice a week. The treatments were completely randomized and the averages were compared using the Tukey test at 5%. The infection rate of leaves was measured by diagrammatic scale besides the weight and diameter of tubers. The inhibition results of the radial growth by oil treatments were 0; 56, 87, 83 and 99%, while the infection rate showed: 77.08, 35.62, 21.04, 19.37 and 20% respectively to the control and to the oil concentration of 0,13; 0,67; 0,80 e 1,00%. Only at concentration of 0.8% the tea tree oil showed a positive relationship between tuber´s weight and tuber´s diameter gains. It can be concluded that tea tree oil is effective to controlling C. beticola, and also promotes an increase on development in beet tubers.

Avaliações do crescimento e da composição florística de espécies que vegetam sob a copa das árvores são importantes no controle de plantas daninhas (PD). O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar essas avaliações em dois experimentos (E1 e E2), quando as árvores tinham idades de dois anos e um ano, respectivamente. Em E1, sabiá (S) e gliricídia (G) foram submetidas a densidades de plantio de 400 a 1.200 plantas ha-1. Em E2, foram comparados sistemas de cultivo de S, G e nim (N): SSS, GGG, NNN, GSG, NSN, SGS, NGN, SNS e GNG (cada letra representa uma fileira de plantas). Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso com três (E1) e quatro repetições (E2). Os tratamentos foram dispostos em parcelas subdivididas em E1 (espécies nas parcelas). No E2, os graus de liberdade de tratamentos (8) foram desdobrados em sistemas de cultivo (tratamentos que envolveram uma mesma espécie) e entre grupos de sistemas de cultivo (2). No E1 ocorreram 21 espécies de PD. A gliricídia apresentou maior altura da planta do que a sabiá, porém as duas espécies não diferiram quanto a diâmetro da copa, número de espécies de PD por parcela e biomassas fresca e seca da parte aérea das PD. O aumento da densidade de plantio reduziu todas essas características. No E2 ocorreram 26 espécies de PD. Os sistemas de cultivo que incluíram a gliricídia apresentaram copas com maior diâmetro que aqueles em que a nim foi incluída. Não houve diferenças entre sistemas de cultivo quanto a número de espécies de PD por parcela e biomassas fresca e seca da parte aérea das PD.

Assessing the growth and floristic composition of species that grow under the canopy of trees is important for weed control (WC). The objective of this study was to assess two experiments (E1 and E2), when the trees were two years and one year of age, respectively. In E1, sabiá (S) and gliricidia (G) were submitted to planting densities from 400 to 1.200 plants ha-1. In E2, growing systems consisting of S, G, and neem (N) combinations were compared: SSS, GGG, NNN, GSG, NSN, SGS, NGN, SNS, and GNG (each letter represents a row of plants). A random block design was adopted, with three (E1) and four (E2) replicates. In E1, treatments were arranged as split-plots (species in plots). In E2, the degrees of freedom for treatments (8) were partitioned into growing systems (treatments that involved the same species) and between growing system groups (2). Twenty-one weed species were found in E1. Gliricidia attained greater plant height than sabiá, but these species did not differ in canopy diameter, number of weed species per plot, and weed green and dry biomass of the shoot. Higher planting densities resulted in the reduction of all those traits. Twenty-six weed species were found in E2. Growing systems that included gliricidia showed canopies with greater diameters than growing systems that included neem. There were no differences between growing systems for number of weed species per plot and for weed green and dry biomass of the shoot.

Existe interesse na identificação da densidade de semeadura ideal para os novos híbridos de milho e na redução do uso de herbicidas no controle de plantas daninhas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da densidade de semeadura (30, 50, 70 e 90 mil plantas ha-1) e do controle de plantas daninhas sobre os rendimentos de espigas verdes e de grãos da cultivar de milho AG 1051. Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos completos casualizados com parcelas subdivididas (densidades de semeadura atribuídas às parcelas) e dez repetições. O controle de plantas daninhas foi obtido por duas capinas e pela consorciação do milho com gliricídia (entre as fileiras do milho em covas espaçadas por 0,3 m). Um tratamento "sem capinas"foi incluído como controle. O aumento da densidade de semeadura aumentou o número total de espigas e o peso de espigas verdes comercializáveis e diminuiu a biomassa das plantas daninhas e da gliricídia. Nas parcelas não-capinadas, consorciadas e capinadas foram obtidos rendimentos máximos de 7.881 kg ha-1, 7021 kg ha-1 e 9.231 kg ha-1, respectivamente, com as populações de 67, 74 e 67 mil plantas ha-1, respectivamente. A consorciação não controlou as plantas daninhas (26 espécies) e propiciou crescimento das plantas daninhas, rendimento de espigas verdes e rendimento de grãos (nas menores densidades) similares aos obtidos com a ausência de capinas, exceto para o número total de espigas verdes, no qual não houve influência do controle de plantas daninhas. Nas densidades de 70 e 90 mil plantas ha-1, os rendimentos de grãos obtidos com duas capinas não diferiram dos rendimentos obtidos com a ausência de capinas e com a consorciação, respectivamente, indicando que o aumento da densidade de semeadura, bem como a consorciação com a gliricídia podem auxiliar a controlar as plantas daninhas.

There is interest in the identification of the best seeding density for new corn hybrids and on reduced use of herbicides for weed control. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of seeding density (30, 50, 70, and 90 thousand plants ha-1) and weed control on green ear yield and grain yield in corn cultivar AG 1051. A completely randomized block design was adopted with split-plots (seeding densities assigned to plots) and ten replicates. Weed control was achieved by means of two hoeings and by planting corn intercropped with gliricidia (between corn rows, in pits spaced 0.3 m apart). A "no weeding"treatment was included as well. Increased seeding density increased the total number and weight of marketable green ears and decreased the biomass of both weeds and gliricidia. In non-weeded, intercropped and hoed plots, the maximum grain yield values achieved as seeding density increased were 7,881, 7,021, and 9,213 kg ha-1, respectively, obtained with populations of 67 thousand, 74 thousand, and 67 thousand plants per hectare, respectively. Intercropping did not control weeds (26 species) and provided weed growth, green ear yield, and grain yield (at the lowest densities) similar to those obtained without hoeing, except for total number of green ears, in which no influence of weed control was observed. At densities of 70 thousand and 90 thousand plants per hectare, grain yield with two hoeings was not different from yield values obtained without weeding or in the treatment intercropped with gliricidia, respectively, indicating that increased corn seeding density as well as gliricidiamay help to control weeds.
