Abstract Faunal inventories contribute to our understanding of regional diversity, and are fundamental for policy and decision-making regarding the management and conservation of large natural areas. This study aimed to inventory and compile information on amphibian species occurring in the North Pantanal region, in the municipal limits of Cáceres, Mato Grosso, Brazil. We used three methods to inventory amphibian species: (1) fieldwork, (2) analysis of specimens deposited in scientific collections, and (3) literature reviews. We registered 49 amphibian species in Cáceres. Of them, 48 species belonged to the Anura order and were distributed across eight families and 20 genera, and one species belonged to the Gymnophiona order (Siphonops paulensis). The families Leptodactylidae (20 spp.) and Hylidae (17 spp.) were dominant in terms of richness, accounting for 75.5% of all species found in Cáceres. The remaining families had between four and one species each. The municipality is strongly influenced by non-forested formations (e.g., the Cerrado and Pantanal) and presents a high species richness for a non-forested location in Brazil. Our findings highlight Cáceres as one of the richest areas in amphibian species in the North Pantanal region, expanding our knowledge regarding frog diversity. This study provides a foundation for future conservation strategies and additional assessments of amphibian species in light of potential population declines and other emerging threats.

Resumo O processo de introdução de espécies exóticas é reconhecido como uma das maiores ameaças à ecologia e economia do planeta, devido às mudanças nas interações em comunidades biológicas nativas. Nesse sentido, relatar as bioinvasões é o primeiro passo para entender seu processo de implantação e criar estratégias para mitigar possíveis danos socioambientais. Aqui relatamos os primeiros registros de P. unifilis introduzidos no Pantanal Norte, Mato Grosso, Brasil. Obtivemos os primeiros registros das espécies ocasionalmente durante 2014 e 2015. Nos anos seguintes, de 2016 a 2019, realizamos observações sistemáticas por meio de incursões náuticas no rio Paraguai, entre a foz do rio Sepotuba e a Estação Ecológica Taiamã (TES). Incluímos também registros de terceiros, quando foi possível comprovar os locais de identificação e registro das espécies. Adultos de Podcnemis unifilis, filhotes e ninhos foram registrados em diferentes pontos ao longo do rio Paraguai. Nossos resultados indicam que P. unifilis foi introduzido próximo ao núcleo urbano de Cáceres há cerca de 30 anos. Atualmente, ela tem uma população estabelecida, registrando ninhos e filhotes por anos consecutivos. Uma em particular é a sua ocorrência no TES, importante viveiro natural de peixes e refúgio da fauna pantaneira. Assim, sugere-se o monitoramento contínuo de P.unifilis, uma vez que o ambiente do Pantanal com diversos ambientes aquáticos distintos, oferece condições favoráveis para o aumento da população da espécie no Pantanal Norte.

Abstract The process of exotic species introduction is recognized as one of the greatest threats to the ecology and economy of the planet, due to changes in interactions in native biological communities. In this sense, reporting bioinvasions is the first step to understanding its introduction process and creating strategies to mitigate possible socio-environmental damages. Here we report the first records of Podocnemis unifilis introduced in the Northern Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil. We obtained the species’ first records occasionally during 2014 and 2015. In the following years from 2016 to 2019, we carried out systematic observations through nautical incursions on the Paraguay River, between the Sepotuba River mouth and the Taiamã Ecological Station (TES). We also included third part records, when it was possible to prove the species identification and registration sites. Podocnemis unifilis adults, hatchling and nests were recorded at different points along the Paraguay River. Our results indicate that P. unifilis was introduced close to the urban nucleus of Cáceres about 30 years ago. Currently, it has an established population, recording nests and hatchling for years in a row. A particular one is its occurrence at the TES, an important natural fish nursery and refuge for the wetland fauna. Thus, continuous monitoring is suggested from P.unifilis, since the Pantanal’s environment with several different aquatic environments, offers favorable conditions for the species population increase in the Northern Pantanal.

Resumo O município de Sorriso-MT tornou-se o maior produtor de grãos do País nos últimos 40 anos, o que provocou importantes transformações econômicas, sociais e na paisagem local. Assim, buscamos analisar e compreender a dinâmica destas transformações. Avaliamos o crescimento da atividade agropecuária no Município, a diminuição das áreas de vegetação natural e relacionamos o crescimento da produção com aspectos de desenvolvimento econômico e social. Para verificar as transformações temporais na paisagem, foram elaborados mapas de ocupação do solo a partir de imagens de satélite, em escala temporal de cinco anos (1985 a 2015). Em 2015, restavam 24,97% da área do Município coberta por vegetação natural. A soja é a principal cultura, estando presente em 68,6% da área do Município. Se, por um lado, as atividades agrícolas geram impostos fundamentais para as obrigações municipais, por outro geram impactos sociais e ambientais relevantes.

Abstract The municipality of Sorriso-MT has become the largest grain producer in the country in the last 40 years, which has caused important economic, social and local changes. Thus, we seek to analyze and understand the dynamics of these transformations. We evaluate the growth of agricultural activity in the Municipality, the reduction of areas of natural vegetation and relate the growth of production with aspects of economic and social development. In order to verify the temporal transformations in the landscape, maps of soil occupation were elaborated from satellite images, in a five-year time scale (1985 to 2015). In 2015, 24.97% of the area of the Municipality covered by natural vegetation. Soy is the main crop, present in 68.6% of the area of the Municipality. If, on the one hand, agricultural activities generate taxes that are fundamental to municipal obligations, on the other hand, they also generate relevant socioenvironmental impacts.

Resumen El municipio de Sorriso-MT se ha convertido en el mayor productor de granos del país en los últimos 40 años, lo que ha provocado importantes cambios económicos, sociales y en el paisaje local. Así buscamos analizar y comprender la dinámica de estos cambios. Evaluamos el crecimiento de la actividad agropecuaria en el Municipio y la disminución de las áreas de vegetación natural y relacionamos el crecimiento de la producción con aspectos del desarrollo económico y social. Para verificar las transformaciones temporales en el paisaje, elaboramos mapas de ocupación del suelo a partir de imágenes de satélite, a temporal de cinco años (1985-2015). En 2015, quedaban 24,97% del área del Municipio con vegetación natural. La soja es la principal cultura, presente en el 68,6% del área del Municipio. Por un lado, las actividades agrícolas generan impuestos básicos para las obligaciones municipales, por el otro generan significativos impactos sociales y ambientales.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a composição de abelhas Euglossina em três áreas distintas, com monocultura de eucalipto de diferentes idades, utilizando a vegetação nativa como controle, com base nos aspectos de riqueza e abundância. O trabalho foi realizado em três propriedades particulares, localizadas na região Sudoeste de Mato Grosso, em monocultura de eucaliptos de diferentes idades e vegetação nativa (Cerrado). As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente, de dezembro de 2011 a março de 2012, utilizando-se seis essências: eugenol, eucaliptol, vanilina, benzoato de benzila, salicitato de metila e acetato de benzila, das 8 às 16 h. Foram coletados 430 espécimes, de quatro gêneros e 18 espécies. Eulaema nigritaLepeletier, 1841, Euglossa melanotricha Moure, 1967 e Eulaema cingulata Fabricius, 1804 foram as espécies mais abundantes e comuns a todas as áreas estudadas. A área com maior abundância de abelhas foi ApS (166 indivíduos) e com maior riqueza, a Tol (14 espécies). A composição de espécies foi semelhante nas áreas analisadas, e a abundância apresentou dissimilaridade entre a Tol e as áreas SanR e ApS. A área AC (área-controle) apresentou maior abundância (147) e riqueza (n = 15) em relação à monocultura de eucalipto.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the composition of Euglossine bees in three distinct areas, with monoculture of eucalyptus with different ages, using native vegetation as control, based on the aspects of richness and abundance. The work was carried out in three private properties, located in the Southwest region of Mato Grosso in monoculture of eucalyptus with different ages and native vegetation (Cerrado). Samples were collected monthly from December 2011 to March 2012, using six essences: eugenol, eucalyptol, vanillin, benzyl benzoate, methyl salicylate and benzyl acetate, from 8 am to 4 pm. We collected 430 specimens, four genera and 18 species. Eulaema nigrita Lepeletier, 1841, Euglossa melanotricha Moure, 1967 and Eulaema cingulata Fabricius, 1804 were the most abundant species and common to all studied areas. The area with the greatest abundance of bees was ApS (166 individuals) and the one with greater richness, Tol (14 species). The species composition was similar in the analyzed areas, and welth presented dissimilarity between Tol and SanR and ApS. The CA area (control area) showed higher abundance (147) and richness (n = 15) compared to eucalyptus monoculture.

Nós capturamos pequenos mamíferos em oito fragmentos florestais (43 a 1.411 ha) nos períodos seco e chuvoso, no sudoeste de Mato Grosso, Brasil, e investigamos a variação na riqueza e na abundância de pequenos mamíferos e em variáveis relacionadas à estrutura da floresta (volume da liteira e abertura do dossel) e à disponibilidade de artrópodes, entre os dois períodos do ano. As amostragens foram realizadas durante o período chuvoso entre 2002 e 2003 e durante período seco de 2003. Em cada fragmento, foram utilizadas armadilhas Sherman, Tomahawk, Snap trap e Pitfall durante 10 dias consecutivos em cada época do ano, totalizando 17.600 armadilhas x noites. Foram obtidas no total 379 capturas de 20 espécies, sendo sete de marsupiais e 13 de roedores, com sucesso de captura de 2,2% (1,6% para o período chuvoso e 2,7% para o período seco). Não houve diferenças significativas na riqueza total, riqueza de roedores, riqueza de marsupiais, abundância total e abundância de roedores entre os períodos seco e chuvoso. Já a abundância de marsupiais foi significativamente maior na época da seca, quando a quantidade de chuvas é menor. O volume da liteira foi significativamente maior durante a seca, enquanto a disponibilidade de artrópodes foi significativamente maior durante o período chuvoso. Sendo assim, a grande disponibilidade de alimento no ambiente durante a estação chuvosa pode ter tornado as iscas das armadilhas menos atrativas. De maneira geral, as variações entre períodos seco e chuvoso observados estão de acordo com padrões descritos em outros estudos.

We captured small mammals in eight forest fragments (43 a 1.411 ha.) during the dry and wet seasons, in southwest Mato Grosso, Brazil, and investigated the variation in small mammal richness and abundance, as well as in forest structure variables (litter volume and canopy openness) and arthropod availability, between the two seasons. Sampling was carried out during the wet season between 2002 and 2003 and in the dry season of 2003. In each fragment, we used Sherman, Tomahawk, snap, and pitfall traps during 10 consecutive days per season, totaling 17,600 trap x nights. In total, we obtained 379 captures of 20 species, seven of marsupials and 13 of rodents. Overall capture success was 2.2% (1.6% during the wet season and 2.7% during the dry season). Total richness, richness of rodents, richness of marsupials, total abundance and abundance of rodents did not varied significantly between seasons. However, marsupial abundance was significantly lower in the dry season, when rainfall is high. Litter volume was significantly higher during the dry season, while arthropod availability was significantly higher during the wet season. Therefore, higher food availability during the wet season may have made trap baits less attractive. In general, the observed variations between dry and wet seasons are in accordance with patterns described in other studies.
