Resumo Alguns estudos relatam o efeito positivo de resíduos orgânicos de formigueiros nas propriedades do solo e na estrutura da comunidade de plantas adjacentes em experimentos de campo, mas há uma lacuna sobre o efeito em espécies individuais. O objetivo do presente estudo foi comparar o desenvolvimento de Turnera subulata Smith, uma espécie ornamental, na presença do substrato de descarte (SD) de formigueiros produzido pela formiga cortadeira Acromyrmex balzani (Emery, 1890) por meio de experimento em casa de vegetação. O experimento foi conduzido com dois tratamentos: solo controle e solo com 25% de SD. As plantas foram mantidas em vasos de 1L por 90 dias. Foram avaliados os parâmetros: altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, comprimento da raiz, número de folhas, massa seca da raiz, biomassa seca e fresca da parte aérea. Além disso, o conteúdo relativo de clorofila e os nutrientes foliares foram usados como parâmetros fisiológicos. Como resultado, as plantas que cresceram no solo com SD apresentaram valores significativamente maiores de todos os parâmetros avaliados quando comparadas ao tratamento controle (p < 0.001). Concluímos que esse biofertilizante contribuiu para a produção de plantas mais vigorosas, podendo atuar na dinâmica local de nutrientes nos ecossistemas onde A. balzani ocorre. Além disso, por ser relativamente abundante e fácil de coletar, o SD de A. balzani tem potencial para ser utilizado como biofertilizante na produção de plantas de ciclo de vida curta.

Abstract Some studies report the positive effect of organic residues from ant nests on soil properties and on the structure of the adjacent plant community in field experiments, but there is a gap about the effect on individual species. The purpose of the present study was to compare the soil nutrient content and the development of Turnera subulata Smith, an ornamental species, in the presence of the nest refuse (basically composed of fragments of grass leaves and the symbiotic fungus) produced by the leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex balzani (Emery, 1890) or in control soil through a greenhouse pot experiment. The experiment was carried out with two treatments: control soil and soil with 25% of nest refuse. The plants were kept in 1L pots for 90 days. We evaluated the parameters: plant height, stem diameter, root length, number of leaves, dry weight of the root, dry and fresh aboveground biomass. Additionally, the relative chlorophyll content and leaf nutrients were used as nutritional parameters. As a result, plants that grew in the soil with nest refuse showed significant higher values of all parameters evaluated when compared to the control treatment (p < 0.001). We conclude that this biofertilizer contributed to the production of more vigorous plants, being able to act on the local dynamics of nutrients in the ecosystems where A. balzani occurs. As it is relatively abundant and easy to collect, the refuse of A. balzani has the potential to be used as an alternative substrate in the production of shortlife cycle plants.

Pequizeiro (Caryocar brasiliense Camb) fruits have been evaluated as a potential raw material for the newly established biodiesel industry. This scenario demands applications using the solid co-product derived from the extraction of pequi oil, called cake or meal. This study analyses the acid hydrolysis of carbohydrates present in the pequi meal in order to obtain fermentable sugars and evaluates their conversion to bioethanol. There was 27% starch in the pequi meal. The use of a CCRD experimental design type to study the acid saccharification of pequi meal results in 61.6% conversion of its starch content to reducing sugars. Positive and significant linear effects were observed for H2SO4 concentration and temperature factors, while the quadratic effect of H2SO4 concentration and the linear effect of solid-liquid ratio were negative. Even, with non-optimized fermentative condition using 1% of dried baker's yeast in conical flasks, it was possible to obtain a value equivalent to 53 L of ethanol per ton of hydrolyzed pequi meal.

Oebalus poecilus (Dallas) é praga importante do arroz irrigado no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Este inseto hiberna durante os meses mais frios em refúgios como o folhedo de bambu. Este estudo objetivou elucidar a hibernação de O. poecilus e determinar as causas de mortalidade durante este período. O estudo foi realizado em um bambuzal com cerca de 140 m², situado em área orizícola, em Eldorado do Sul (30° 02’ S e 51° 23’ W), RS. De junho/2000 à abril/2002, foram realizadas 63 amostragens de folhedo, em intervalos semanais ou quinzenais e o número de percevejos registrado em laboratório. A entrada no refúgio de hibernação (folhedo de bambu) iniciou na primeira semana de março, completando-se no início de maio. O. poecilus abandonou o refúgio da metade de outubro até o final de dezembro. O parasitismo por mosca (taquinídeos) e o fungo Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. foram os principais fatores de mortalidade.

Oebalus poecilus (Dallas) is an important pest affecting irrigated rice in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It hibernates during the coldest months of the year in refuges such as bamboo litter. This study examined O. poecilus hibernation to determine the causes of mortality during this period. The study was conducted in a 140 m² bamboo plantation located in a rice-growing area in Eldorado do Sul County (30° 02’ S and 51° 23’ W), RS. During June 2000 to April 2002, 63 samples of litter were taken in weekly or fortnightly intervals, and the number of bugs recorded in the laboratory. The arrival at the hibernation site (bamboo litter) began in the first fortnight of March, and was completed in the beginning of May. O. poecilus left this refuge from middle October to the end of December. Parasitism by tachinid flies and Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. fungus were the most important mortality factors.

Descreveu-se o estado de desenvolvimento dos órgãos internos de reprodução de fêmeas e machos de Oebalus poecilus (Dallas) e avaliou-se o conteúdo de corpos gordurosos contidos na cavidade abdominal, durante o período de hibernação, em indivíduos amostrados em folhedo de bambu, em Eldorado do Sul (30º02'S e 51°23'W), RS, Brasil. No início da fase de hibernação, a cavidade abdominal de fêmeas e machos está repleta de reservas em forma de corpos gordurosos. A redução nos níveis de reservas foi verificada a partir de agosto nos machos e de outubro nas fêmeas. Registrou-se, tanto nos ovários quanto nos testículos, duplicação do comprimento e triplicação da largura entre a fase imatura e a reprodutiva. O amadurecimento sexual dos machos ocorreu dentro do sítio de hibernação. As fêmeas completaram o amadurecimento sexual mais tardiamente, quando já se encontravam fora do refúgio. O estado de desenvolvimento do aparelho reprodutor (sexualmente imaturo) e a cavidade abdominal preenchida por corpos gordurosos caracterizaram o estado de diapausa.

The state of development of the internal reproductive organs of male and female Oebalus poecilus (Dallas) as well as the body fat amount in the abdominal cavity during hibernation, of individuals sampled in bamboo litter in Eldorado do Sul (30º02'S and 51°23'W), RS, Brazil was investigated. Females and males showed the abdominal cavity filled with body fat in the beginning of the hibernation phase. The decrease in fat reserve level occurred from August on for males and from October on for females. Ovaries and testis doubled in length and tripled in width from immature to the reproductive phase. Male sexual maturation occurred in the hibernation sites while for females it occurred later on outside of the sites. Reproductive organ immaturity and abdominal body fat hypertrophy characterized the diapause of O. poecilus.

A região Norte do Estado do Rio de Janeiro é responsável pela produção de cerca de 75% do petróleo nacional (Bacia de Campos-RJ). Na etapa de extração/separação do óleo bruto é gerada considerável quantidade de resíduo oleoso, normalmente denominado borra de petróleo. O aproveitamento deste resíduo em massas argilosas é de alto interesse tecnológico, econômico e ambiental. O objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar e avaliar o comportamento de massas argilosas contendo borra de petróleo visando sua aplicação em cerâmica estrutural. Foram estudadas massas com os seguintes percentuais de borra de petróleo: 0, 5, 10, 15 e 20% em peso. São apresentados os resultados das análises de difração de raios X, granulometria e limites de Atterberg, bem como a determinação de propriedades físico-mecânicas em função da temperatura de queima e percentual de borra adicionada. Os resultados revelaram que a adição do resíduo altera as características físico-química-mineralógicas e propriedades da massa argilosa pura. As massas contendo borra têm uso provável em cerâmica estrutural.

The Northern Region of Rio de Janeiro State is responsible for the production of about 75% of the Brazilian Petroleum (Campos Basin). In the crude oil extraction/separation step, a considerable amount of oil waste is originated, usually named oil sludge waste. The use of this waste as a component of clayey masses is of high interest, as much from an economic and technological as from an environmental perspective. The purpose of this work is to characterize and evaluate some properties of waste containing clayey bodies, aiming its application on structural ceramics. Masses containing 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt% waste were investigated. Results of X-ray analysis, granulometry and Atterberg limits, as well as physical-mechanical properties as a function of waste addition are presented. The results revealed that waste additions modified the physical-chemical-mineralogical characteristics and properties of the masses. The ceramic bodies containing waste are adequate for the structural ceramic field.
