Abstract The aim of this study was to quantify the force exerted by tandem archwires in a specific system of passive self-ligating bracket. Forty-eight thermo-activated nickel-titanium orthodontic archwires were separated into four groups (n = 12): G1 – two .014” + .014” round archwires; G2 – two .014” + .016” round archwires; G3 – .014” x .025” rectangular archwire; and. G4 – .016” x .022” rectangular archwire. Brackets were fixed onto teeth 1.5 to 2.5 using a device that represented the upper teeth, maintaining an interbracket distance of 6.0 mm. The deflection tests were performed using the structure representative of tooth 1.1 as support on the Instron testing machine at a speed of 2.0 mm/min. The archwires were evaluated at deflections of 0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, and 1.5 mm. The data were analyzed by a generalized linear model, considering values at different deflections as repeated measurements in the same experimental unit (α = 0.5%). At 0.5 mm, higher forces were observed in G2 and G3, which did not differ significantly (p > 0.05). The lowest force was observed in G4 (p < 0.05). At 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm, the highest force was observed in G3, followed by G4 and G2 (p < 0.05). The lowest force was observed in G1 (p < 0.05). In general, tandem archwires (same or different calibers) in a specific passive self-ligating bracket exerted lower force when compared with rectangular archwires.

Resumo: O estudo buscou investigar a prevalência de trauma dentário em crianças e adolescentes brasileiros. Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática em oito bases de dados: MEDLINE (via PubMed), LILACS, BBO, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Open Access Theses and Dissertations e OpenThesis. Foram incluídos apenas estudos de prevalência que usavam métodos de amostragem probabilística, sem limitação de ano ou idioma de publicação. Para avaliar o risco individual de viés, foram utilizadas as ferramentas de avaliação crítica da JBI para estudos de prevalência. Os estudos individuais foram combinados na metanálise com o uso do modelo de efeitos aleatórios. A heterogeneidade entre os estudos foi analisada pelas estatísticas Q de Cochran e I-quadrado. A análise de metarregressão foi realizada para avaliar as fontes de heterogeneidade. A abordagem GRADE avaliou a certeza das evidências entre os estudos incluídos. A busca resultou em 2.069 registros, dos quais 36 foram incluídos no estudo. Os estudos elegíveis foram publicados entre 2000 e 2021, com uma amostra total de 40.194 crianças e adolescentes. A maioria dos estudos (75%) teve baixo risco de viés. Nos dentes permanentes, a prevalência de trauma dentário foi de 21% (IC95%: 16,0; 26,0) e nos dentes decíduos foi de 35% (IC95%: 26,0; 44,0). A prevalência de trauma dentário foi mais alta no sexo masculino que no feminino, para ambas as dentições. Com base na baixa certeza, a prevalência das lesões dentárias traumáticas em crianças e adolescentes brasileiros é mais alta que no resto do mundo, tanto nos dentes decíduos quanto nos permanentes. Além disso, a prevalência de trauma dentário é mais alta em meninos que em meninas.

The eligible studies were published from 2000 to 2021, with a total sample of 40,194 children and adolescents. Most studies (75%) had a low risk of bias. In permanent teeth, the prevalence of dental trauma was 21% (95%CI: 16.0; 26.0) and in deciduous teeth; 35% (95%CI: 26.0; 44.0). The prevalence of dental trauma among boys was higher than among girls for both dentitions. Based on a low certainty, the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries in Brazilian children and adolescents is higher than that found worldwide both in deciduous and permanent teeth. Also, the prevalence of dental trauma among boys is higher than among girls.

Asimismo, la prevalencia de trauma dental entre niños es más alta que entre niñas.

OBJETIVO: a proposta desse estudo foi avaliar, por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), a interface adesiva após a descolagem de acessórios ortodônticos, fixados em dentes bovinos com emprego de adesivo hidrofílico e hidrofóbico, em condições distintas de umidade do substrato dentário. MÉTODOS: foram utilizados 20 incisivos inferiores, divididos em quatro grupos (n = 5): Grupo I , empregou-se o sistema de colagem contendo o primer hidrofílico Transbond MIP e a pasta adesiva Transbond XT, aplicados em substrato úmido; Grupo II, empregou-se o sistema de colagem primer hidrofóbico Transbond XT e pasta adesiva em substrato úmido; Grupos III e IV, os braquetes foram colados com os mesmos sistemas de união dos Grupos I e II, porém com esmalte dentário seco. Removidos os acessórios, avaliou-se em MEV, em diferentes magnificações, a interface adesiva e a interação dos sistemas adesivos com o esmalte dentário. As imagens foram avaliadas qualitativamente, observando-se o embricamento mecânico para o adesivo hidrófilo em quaisquer condições de substrato. RESULTADOS: a falta de umidade no esmalte condicionado permitiu uma melhor interação entre os materiais de ligação e a estrutura adamantina. O adesivo hidrofóbico apresentou o pior resultado de interação micromecânica quando aplicado a uma estrutura dentária úmida; já o sistema hidrofílico mostrou-se versátil, obtendo resultados aceitáveis em condições de umidade e excelente interação na ausência de contaminação. CONCLUSÃO: os autores afirmam que a melhor condição do esmalte dentário para a aplicação de primers é com a ausência de umidade.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the remaining adhesive interface after debonding orthodontic attachments bonded to bovine teeth with the use of hydrophilic and hydrophobic primers under different dental substrate moisture conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty mandibular incisors were divided into four groups (n=5). In Group I, bracket bonding was performed with Transbond MIP hydrophilic primer and Transbond XT adhesive paste applied to moist substrate, and in Group II a bonding system comprising Transbond XT hydrophobic primer and adhesive paste was applied to moist substrate. Brackets were bonded to the specimens in Groups III and IV using the same adhesive systems, but on dry dental enamel. The images were qualitatively assessed by SEM. RESULTS: The absence of moisture in etched enamel enabled better interaction between bonding materials and the adamantine structure. The hydrophobic primer achieved the worst micromechanical interlocking results when applied to a moist dental structure, whereas the hydrophilic system proved versatile, yielding acceptable results in moist conditions and excellent interaction in the absence of contamination. CONCLUSION: The authors assert that the best condition for the application of primers to dental enamel occurs in the absence of moisture.

OBJETIVO: a ancoragem óssea é fundamental para o sucesso do tratamento de algumas más oclusões, pois permite a aplicação de forças contínuas, diminui o tempo de tratamento e independe da colaboração do paciente. MÉTODOS: o propósito desse trabalho foi comparar, por meio de modelos dentários, a perda de ancoragem após a retração inicial de caninos superiores entre dois grupos. O grupo A utilizou o mini-implante enquanto o grupo B utilizou o Botão de Nance. Para todos os pacientes foram realizados dois modelos (M1 e M2). Os primeiros modelos foram realizados ao início (M1), e os outros ao final da retração inicial de canino (M2). RESULTADOS: todas as medidas foram tabuladas e submetidas à análise estatística. Para verificar o erro sistemático intraexaminador foi utilizado o teste t pareado. Na determinação do erro casual utilizou-se o cálculo de erro proposto por Dahlberg. Para comparação entre as fases Início e Após, foi utilizado o teste t pareado. Para a comparação entre os grupos de mini-implante e Botão de Nance, foi utilizado o teste t de Student para medidas independentes. Em todos os testes foi adotado nível de significância de 5% (p<0,05). CONCLUSÃO: ao se medir e comparar em modelos dentários a perda de ancoragem dos molares após a retração inicial de canino utilizando-se dois sistemas de ancoragem distintos (Mini-implante e Botão de Nance), pôde-se observar a inexistência de diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os dois grupos.

OBJECTIVE: Bone anchorage is a key factor for the successful management of some malocclusions for it allows the application of continuous forces, decreases treatment time and is independent from patient compliance. METHODS: The goal of this work was to establish a dental model comparison in order to measure the anchorage loss after the initial retraction of upper canines between the two groups. Group A used mini-implants and Group B used Nance button. All patients had two models cast (M1 and M2). The first models were taken on baseline (M1) and the other models were taken after canine retraction (M2). RESULTS: All measurements were pooled and submitted to statistical analysis. In order to verify the inter-examiner systematic error a paired t-test was performed. Dahlberg's formula was used to estimate the casual error. For comparison purposes between Before and After stages, a paired t-test was done. For the comparison between mini-implant and Nance button groups, a Student t-test was applied. All tests adopted a 5% (p<0.05) significance level. CONCLUSION: No statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups when measurements and comparisons to assess molar anchorage loss after canine initial retraction were performed. Two different anchorage systems were applied on dental models (mini-implants and Nance's button) for each group.

INTRODUÇÃO: a preservação da estrutura de esmalte após a remoção dos acessórios ortodônticos é obrigação do clínico. Portanto, procura-se um protocolo de descolagem com bases científicas. OBJETIVO: objetivou-se avaliar por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) a influência de quatro protocolos de remoção de braquetes e polimento da superfície do esmalte e propor um protocolo que minimize os danosà superfície do esmalte. MÉTODOS: doze incisivos permanentes bovinos foram divididos em quatro grupos de acordo com os instrumentos utilizados para a descolagem dos braquetes e remoção do remanescente adesivo. Os braquetes foram descolados com o alicate de descolagem reto (Ormco Corp.) nos grupos 1 e 2, e com o instrumento de descolagem Lift-Off (3M Unitek) nos grupos 3 e 4. Os remanescentes adesivos dos grupos 1 e 3 foram removidos com o alicate removedor de resina longo (Ormco Corp.) e dos grupos 2 e 4 com broca de carboneto de tungstênio (Beavers Dental) em alta-rotação. As superfícies, após cada etapa da descolagem e polimento, foram avaliadas em réplicas de resina epóxica e foram obtidas eletromicrografias com aumento de 50 e 200X. RESULTADOS: os quatro protocolos de remoção de acessórios ortodônticos e polimento ocasionaram irregularidades no esmalte. Conclusão: a remoção do braquete com o alicate de descolagem reto, seguido da remoção do remanescente adesivo com broca de carboneto de tungstênio e polimento final com pasta de pedra-pomes foi o procedimento que ocasionou menores danos ao esmalte, sendo o protocolo sugerido para a remoção dos acessórios ortodônticos.

INTRODUCTION: Preserving the dental enamel structure during removal of orthodontic accessories is a clinician's obligation. Hence the search for an evidence based debonding protocol. OBJECTIVE: to evaluate and compare, by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the effects of four different protocols of bracket debonding and subsequent polishing on enamel surface, and to propose a protocol that minimizes damage to enamel surface. METHODS: Twelve bovine permanent incisors were divided into four groups according to the instrument used for debonding and removal of the adhesive remnant. In groups 1 and 2, brackets were debonded with a straight debonding plier (Ormco Corp., Glendora, California, USA), and in groups 3 and 4, debonding was performed with the instrument Lift-Off (3M Unitek, Monrovia, California, USA). In groups 1 and 3, the adhesive remnant was removed using a long adhesive removing plier (Ormco Corp., Glendora, California, USA) and in groups 2 and 4, residual adhesive was removed with a tungsten carbide bur (Beavers Dental) at high-speed. After each stage of debonding and polishing, enamel surfaces were replicated and electron micrographs were obtained with 50 and 200X magnification. RESULTS: All four protocols of debonding and polishing caused enamel irregularities. CONCLUSION: Debonding brackets with straight debonding plier, removal of adhesive remnant with a tungsten carbide bur and polishing with pumice and rubber cup was found to be the protocol that caused less damage to enamel surface, therefore this protocol is suggested for debonding brackets.

This study aimed to compare in vitro the shear bond strength between metallic brackets (Abzil) with conventional mesh bases and metallic brackets with bases industrially sandblasted with aluminum oxide using three adhesive systems, in order to assess the influence of sandblasting on adhesiveness and to compare 3 different bonding systems. Two hundred and forty bovine incisors were used and randomly divided into 6 groups (40 teeth in each group), according to the bracket base and to the bonding system. The brackets were direct-bonded in bovine teeth with 3 adhesive systems: System A - conventional TransbondTM XT (3M - Unitek); System B - TransbondTM Plus Self Etching Primer + TransbondTM XT (3M - Unitek) and System C - Fuji ORTHO LC resin-reinforced glass ionomer cement in capsules (GC Corp.). Shear bond strength tests were performed 24 hours after bonding, in a DL-3000 universal testing machine (EMIC), using a load cell of 200 kgf and a speed of 1 mm/min. The results were submitted to statistical analysis and showed no significant difference between conventional and sandblasted bracket bases. However, comparison between the bonding systems presented significantly different results. System A (14.92 MPa) and system C (13.24 MPa) presented statistically greater shear bond strength when compared to system B (10.66 MPa). There was no statistically significant difference between system A and system C.

OBJETIVO: avaliar o Índice de Remanescente Adesivo (IRA) em dentes bovinos após a descolagem de braquetes com e sem tratamento na base. METODOLOGIA: foram utilizados três sistemas de colagem ortodôntica para os dois padrões de base. Os dentes bovinos foram divididos em seis grupos de 40, de acordo com a base do braquete e o sistema de colagem. Vinte e quatro horas após a colagem foram realizados os testes de compressão em uma máquina de ensaios. A avaliação do IRA foi realizada em um estereomicroscópio por três examinadores calibrados. Foi utilizado o teste não paramétrico de Kruskal-Wallis, seguido do método de Dunn, para fazer as comparações múltiplas entre todos os grupos. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: observou-se que o tratamento das bases dos braquetes com óxido de alumínio não foi determinante para o aumento da adesividade entre o braquete e o adesivo. O grupo em que se utilizou braquetes com tratamento na base e adesivo TXT (3M-Unitek) + Transbond Plus SEP (3M-Unitek) apresentou a maior parte das fraturas na interface dente-adesivo (escore 4).

AIM: To assess the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) in bovine teeth after debonding mesh bases and sandblasted orthodontic bracket bases. METHODS: Were used three bonding systems for the two standards of base. The bovine teeth were divided into 6 groups of 40, according to the bracket base and to the bonding system. Twenty four hours after bonding they had been carried through shear bond strength tests in a universal testing machine. The assessment of ARI was performed in a stereomicroscopy by three calibrated examiners. It was used the non-parametric Kruskall-Wallis test, followed by Dunn's method, to do the multiple comparisons among all groups. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: It was observed that the aluminum oxide sandblasting bracket bases was not determinative to the increase of the adhesiveness between bracket and adhesive. The group where it was used sandblasted orthodontic bracket bases and bonding system TXT (3M-Unitek) + Transbond Plus SEP (3M-Unitek) presented the majority of the failures at the teeth-adhesive interface (score 4).

OBJETIVOS: determinar a morfologia das 3ª e 4ª vértebras cervicais representativa dos estágios de pré-pico, pico e pós-pico de velocidade de crescimento estatural, definidos previamente pelos centros de ossificação do primeiro dedo em radiografias carpais ou do dedo polegar. MÉTODOS: foram utilizadas 120 telerradiografias em norma lateral de 106 pacientes selecionados da clínica de Ortodontia Preventiva e Interceptiva da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba-UNESP e Profis/HRAC-USP que apresentavam as correspondentes radiografias carpais ou do dedo polegar. As telerradiografias foram divididas em três grupos de 40 radiografias, de acordo com os estágios maturacionais pré-pico, pico e pós-pico, definidos pela imagem do primeiro dedo. A morfologia dos corpos das 3ª e 4ª vértebras cervicais foi determinada por dois examinadores devidamente calibrados em dois tempos diferentes. CONCLUSÕES: concluiu-se que o formato retangular horizontal com borda inferior reta foi representativo do estágio de pré-pico, independentemente da vértebra analisada. Já o formato retangular horizontal com borda inferior curva, especialmente se encontrado em C4, ou o formato quadrado com borda inferior reta caracterizaram o pico de velocidade de crescimento. O formato quadrado ou, principalmente, o retangular vertical com borda inferior curva determinaram o estágio de pós-pico de velocidade de crescimento da adolescência.

AIM: To determine the morphology of the third and fourth cervical vertebrae which represent the pre-peak, peak and post-peak stages of statural growth, previously defined by ossification centers of the thumb in hand-wrist or thumb periapical radiographs. METHODS: The sample was comprised of 120 lateral cephalometric radiographs of 106 patients from the Interceptive Orthodontics Clinic of the School of Dentistry of Araçatuba/UNESP and from PROFIS /Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies/USP. All patients had hand-wrist or corresponding thumb periapical radiographs available. The lateral radiographs were divided into three groups of 40 radiographs according to the pre-peak, peak and post-peak maturational stages, defined by the radiographic image of the thumb. The morphology of the third and fourth cervical vertebrae was determined by two calibrated examiners in two different times. CONCLUSIONS: The findings show that the horizontal, rectangular-shaped vertebra with straight lower border represented the pre-peak stage, regardless of the analyzed vertebra. The horizontal, rectangular-shaped vertebra with curved lower border, mainly if found in C4, or the square-shaped vertebra with straight lower border was typical of the growth peak. The square-shaped or, mainly, the rectangular-shaped vertebra with curved lower border determined the post-peak stage of adolescent growth spurt.

OBJETIVO: o presente ensaio científico põe em pauta o efeito imediato da distalização unilateral de molares superiores, lançando mão do distalizador intrabucal Pendex de ação unilateral. METODOLOGIA: o estudo prospectivo foi conduzido em três pacientes na dentadura permanente madura, no estágio de adolescência, que apresentavam uma má oclusão Classe II, subdivisão. O aparelho Pendex foi instalado com a mola distalizadora de TMA, construída apenas no lado direito. A metodologia baseou-se nas radiografias panorâmicas inicial e pós-distalização para quantificar a inclinação axial mesiodistal dos molares superiores. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: os resultados mostraram que os molares do lado esquerdo mantiveram sua inclinação mesiodistal inicial, sugerindo ancoragem, enquanto os molares do lado direito foram inclinados para distal, à semelhança do que ocorre com a distalização simétrica dos molares superiores, obtida com o aparelho Pendex convencional. Os primeiros molares foram inclinados 11,5º, enquanto os segundos molares foram inclinados 21º para distal.

AIM: the current study focuses on the immediate unilateral distalization of the upper molars with the unilateral Pend-X appliance. METHODS: in three adolescent patients in the permanent dentition with Class II subdivision 1 malocclusion, the TMA loop was placed in the right side. Therefore, the first and second upper right molars were distalized with the Pend-X appliance. Panoramic radiographs taken before and after distalization were used to measure the mesiodistal axial inclination of the upper molars and the results were compared to those obtained with the bilateral Pend-X. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: the findings show that the left molars kept their original mesiodistal inclination, suggesting that the anchorage was maintained, whilst the right molars were partially inclined in a distal direction, similarly to what occurs when conventional Pend-X is used to distalize molars bilaterally. The first molars showed an 11.5º distal inclination while the second molars presented a 21º distal inclination.

OBJETIVO: a reabsorção radicular apical é uma condição comumente observada durante e após o tratamento ortodôntico e fatores como tipo de aparelhagem ortodôntica utilizada, magnitude das forças aplicadas e duração do tratamento podem estar relacionados ao processo de arredondamento do ápice radicular. Buscou-se avaliar, por meio de imagens radiográficas computadorizadas, a quantidade de reabsorção no ápice radicular, quando da utilização de duas diferentes técnicas de mecânica ortodôntica fixa: Edgewise com acessórios padrão e Edgewise com acessórios totalmente programados. METODOLOGIA: a amostra constituiu-se de 20 pacientes tratados pelo mesmo profissional na Clínica de Ortodontia da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba - UNESP. Os pacientes foram divididos em dois grupos: grupo 1 (Tratados com Edgewise com acessórios padrão e fios de aço) e grupo 2 (Tratados com Edgewise com acessórios totalmente programados e fios de níquel-titânio). A avaliação radiográfica digital foi realizada por um único operador por meio de exposições radiográficas digitais feitas no início do tratamento ortodôntico, após retração de caninos e final de tratamento, utilizando o sistema de escores proposto por Levander e Malmgren (1988). RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: a análise dos escores permitiu concluir que o tratamento ortodôntico empregando a técnica Edgewise com acessórios totalmente programados e fios de níquel-titânio apresentou menores graus de reabsorção radicular apical, em comparação à técnica Edgewise com acessórios padrão e fios de aço. Observou-se que, independentemente da técnica empregada, o tratamento ortodôntico como um todo apresentou um grau moderado de reabsorção radicular apical.

AIM: external apical root resorption is frequently observed during and after orthodontic treatment and can be related to factors such as mechanical factors, magnitude of forces and treatment time with fixed appliances. This study investigated by means of computerized radiographs the amount of root resorption after orthodontic treatment with two different fixed appliance techniques: standard Edgewise technique and Straight-wire system. METHODS: the sample was comprised of 20 patients treated by the same orthodontist at the Orthodontic Clinic of Araçatuba Dental School, University of São Paulo State - UNESP. The patients were divided into two groups: group 1 (treated with standard Edgewise technique and stainless steel wires) and group 2 (treated with Straight-wire system and nickel-titanium alloys). The computerized evaluation was performed by only one examiner using Levander and Malmgren’s score system (1988) in the radiographs obtained at the beginning of the orthodontic treatment, after canine retraction and at the end of treatment. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: external apical root resorption in patients treated with Straight-wire system and nickel-titanium alloy was lesser than in patients treated by standard Edgewise technique and stainless steel wires. However, all patients presented moderate external apical root resorption regardless of the fixed appliance technique.

A distalização dos molares superiores constitui um desafio na correção da má oclusão de Classe II em tratamentos sem extrações dentárias e sem avanço mandibular. Há uma procura por dispositivos que substituam a tração extrabucal (AEB) e que não exijam demasiada colaboração do paciente, o que estimula os ortodontistas a testarem métodos alternativos aos relatados na literatura. Dentre estes, destacam-se os aparelhos Pêndulo e Pendex de Hilgers. OBJETIVO: a realização desta pesquisa teve o intuito de avaliar, mediante a cefalometria, os efeitos do aparelho Pendex aplicado no final da dentadura mista e na dentadura permanente. METODOLOGIA: a amostra constou de 14 pacientes com má oclusão de Classe II bilateral, com média de idade de 11 anos e 3 meses. Foram tomadas duas telerradiografias em norma lateral, uma correspondente ao início do tratamento e outra aproximadamente 5 meses após sua finalização, quando a relação dos molares encontrava-se sobrecorrigida. RESULTADOS: após a determinação e mensuração das grandezas cefalométricas lineares e angulares e análise estatística (Teste t de Student), pode-se concluir que os efeitos do aparelho Pendex foram predominantemente ortodônticos: distalização da coroa dos primeiros molares permanentes numa velocidade média de 0,8 mm/mês e vestibularização dos incisivos superiores com aumento do trespasse horizontal. CONCLUSÃO: assim sendo, quando há indicação para distalização dos molares, cumpre-se fazer uma análise dos fatores envolvidos, a fim de eleger, com prudência, a solução terapêutica mais adequada às exigências individuais e profissionais.

The upper molar distalization is a challenge in the Class II malocclusion correction in treatments without dental extraction and without mandibular advance. There is a search for appliances that replace the extrabuccal traction (AEB) and do not require patient cooperation, that stimulate the orthodontists to test the alternative methods related in the literature. Among these, we see the Hilgers' Pendulum and Pend-X appliances. AIM: The realization of this research has the aim to evaluate, through the cephalometry, the effects of the Pend-X appliance applied in the end of the mixed dentition and in the permanent too. METHODS: The sample consisted of 14 patients with bilateral Class II malocclusion and with mean age of 11 years and 3 months old. Two teleradiographies were taken in the lateral norm, one was correspondent to the beginning of the treatment and the other one after approximately 5 months, when the molars relation were overcorrected. RESULTS: After the determination and measurement of angular and linear cephalometry quantities and the statistical analysis (Student's t tests) could one to conclude that the effects of the Pend-X appliance were predominantly dental: first molars crown distalization in a mean speed of 0.8mm/month and superior incisive vestibularization with overjet increase. CONCLUSION: So, when there is indication to molars distalization, we have to analyse the involved factors to elect, with prudence, the most adequated therapeutic solution with the individual and professional exigencies.

OBJETIVO: a presente pesquisa clínica, longitudinal e prospectiva, avaliou os efeitos do aparelho Pendex mediante o emprego de modelos de gesso. METODOLOGIA: utilizou-se uma amostra de 30 modelos de gesso, obtidos no início e no final da distalização dos molares superiores com o aparelho Pendex, de 15 jovens brasileiros tratados no Curso de Pós-Graduação, nível de Mestrado em Ortodontia, da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba - UNESP. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: os resultados mostraram aumento do perímetro do arco dentário superior com inclinação distal e controle transversal dos primeiros molares superiores.

AIM: this clinical longitudinal prospective study evaluated in cast models the effects of the Pendex appliance. METHODS: thirty cast models of 15 adolescents treated at the Post-graduate course of the School of Dentistry of Araçatuba - UNESP were obtained at the beginning and at the end of the distal movement of the upper molars with the Pendex appliance. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: the results showed increase of the upper dental arch perimeter with distal inclination and transverse control of the upper first molars

OBJETIVO: avaliar a freqüência dos sinais e sintomas, dos hábitos parafuncionais e das características oclusais de 80 crianças, pacientes da clínica de Ortodontia Preventiva da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba - UNESP. METODOLOGIA: o exame clínico constituiu-se de avaliação das características oclusais do paciente e observação da presença de hábitos parafuncionais. As crianças foram submetidas a uma entrevista, supervisionadas pelos pais, cujas perguntas relacionavam-se com os sinais e sintomas da disfunção. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: concluiu-se que os sinais e sintomas mais freqüentes foram o hábito de ranger os dentes, dores de cabeça e ruídos na ATM. A onicofagia e o bruxismo foram os hábitos parafuncionais mais prevalentes. A freqüência de sinais e sintomas da disfunção temporomandibular pode ser verificada em crianças por meio da entrevista e exame clínico minucioso.

AIM: to assess the frequency of signs and symptoms of the parafunctional habits and of the occlusal characteristics of 80 children, patients of the Preventive Orthodontics Clinic at Araçatuba’s Faculty of Dentistry - UNESP. METHODS: the clinical test comprised evaluation of the patient’s occlusal characteristics and observation of the presence of parafunctional habits. The children were submitted to a parent-supervised interview, whose questions were related to the signs and symptoms of the dysfunction. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: we concluded that the most frequent signs and symptoms were teeth-grinding, headache and ATM noises. The most prevalent parafunctional habits were onicophagy and bruxism. The frequency of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction can be noticed in children through interview and a detailed clinical test.

Dentre os diversos meios de se determinar o grau de maturação esquelética do paciente destaca-se o Método de Lamparski modificado por Hassel e Farman, em 1995, que propuseram a identificação do estágio da maturação por meio das modificações anatômicas das 2ª, 3ª e 4ª vértebras cervicais. Cientes das qualidades advogadas ao método citado surgiu o interesse em avaliar sua reprodutibilidade com o intuito de divulgá-lo e incorporá-lo como um elemento no diagnóstico e auxiliar no prognóstico dos tratamentos das más oclusões. A amostra constou de 100 telerradiografias em norma lateral de pacientes triados para tratamento ortodôntico na Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba - UNESP nos períodos de 2000 e 2001. Foram incluídos pacientes de ambos os gêneros na faixa etária de 6 a 16 anos e a média de 9 anos e 7 meses. Três examinadores devidamente calibrados realizaram a avaliação das radiografias classificando-as em escores de 1 a 6. Após a análise dos resultados, os mesmos foram tabulados e submetidos ao coeficiente Kappa de concordância para avaliação inter e intra-examinador concluindo, dessa forma, a reprodutibilidade do referido método. O método de determinação da maturação esquelética por meio das vértebras cervicais mostrou-se reproduzível na avaliação do estágio em que o indivíduo se encontra na curva de crescimento.

Among the different ways to determine the degree of the skeletal maturation of the patient, the Lamparski method stands out modified by Hassel e Farman that proposed the identification of the maturation stage throught anatomic changes of the 2nd, 3rd and 4rth cervical vertebrae. Awere of the qualities conferred to the quoted method emerged the interest about evaluating its reprodutictibility with the aim of divulge and incorporate it as an element in diagnoses and as an auxiliary in the prognoses of the malocclusion treatment. The sample presented 100 teleradiographs in lateral norm of the patients examined for orthodontic treatment in School of Dentistry at Araçatuba - São Paulo state University in 2000 and 2001. Patients of both genders at the age of 6 through 16 years old and average age of 9 and 7 months in the sample. Three examiners properly trained did the evaluation of the teleradiographs rating them in phases from one to six. After analyzing the results, these ones were tabulated and subdwed to the KAPPA coefficient of agreement to evaluation inter and intra-examiner, concluding this way, the reproductibility of the above mentioned method. The method of the skeletal maturation by cervical vertebral was reproducible to determine the patient's stage in the curve of growth.
