Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os níveis de contaminação ambiental em uma área protegida na Amazônia brasileira. Para isso, foram escolhidas duas áreas ao longo do rio Mearim: a área de referência (A1) e a área potencialmente contaminada (A2), onde foram coletadas amostras de água, para análises físico-químicas e microbiológicas, além de espécimes de Hoplias malabaricus, para avaliação de dados biométricos e incidência de lesões branquiais. As análises físico-químicas da água de ambas as áreas mostraram contaminação (baixos níveis de oxigênio dissolvido, turbidez e altas concentrações de ferro, principalmente em A2). As análises microbiológicas mostraram que todas as amostras de água apresentaram valores de coliformes totais superiores aos aceitáveis pelo CONAMA e OMS (com valores superiores em A2), além de valores de E. coli superiores aos permitidos pela legislação em A2. Em relação aos dados biométricos, os peixes machos e fêmeas foram significativamente maiores e mais pesados em A1 durante as estações seca e chuvosa e o índice gonadossomático também apresentou valores maiores em A1 do que em A2 em ambas as estações. H. malabaricus apresentaram lesões branquiais de importância patológica mínima a moderada em A1 e A2, indicando que espécimes de ambas as áreas do rio Mearim apresentaram respostas biológicas à contaminação. As mudanças observadas na qualidade da água, nos parâmetros biométricos e nas análises histológicas dos espécimes de H. malabaricus refletem diretamente na qualidade e saúde dos peixes do Rio Mearim, e apontam para a necessidade urgente de prevenção e remediação da contaminação desses ecossistemas.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of environmental contamination in a protected area in the Brazilian Amazon. For this, two areas were chosen along the Mearim River: the reference area (A1) and the potentially contaminated area (A2), where water samples were collected, for physicochemical and microbiological analyses, as well as specimens of Hoplias malabaricus, for the evaluation of biometric data and incidence of branchial lesions. The physicochemical analyzes of the water from both areas showed contamination (low levels of dissolved oxygen, tubidity and high iron concentrations, especially in A2). The microbiological analyzes showed that all water samples showed total coliform values higher than those acceptable by CONAMA and WHO (with higher values in A2), in addition to E. coli values higher than those allowed by legislation in A2. Regarding biometric data, male and female fishes were significantly longer and heavier in A1 during the dry and rain seasons and the gonadosomatic index also showed higher values in A1 than in A2 in both seasons. H. malabaricus showed gill lesions of minimal to moderate pathological importance in A1 and A2, indicating that specimens from both areas of the Mearim River showed biological responses to contamination. The observed changes in the water quality, bimetic parameters and the histological analyzes of the specimens of H. malabaricus directly reflect on the quality and health of the fishes in the Mearim River, and point to the urgent need for prevention and remediation of contamination in these ecosystems.

Resumo Os estuários estão constantemente sujeitos a impactos ambientais de atividades antropogênicas, como pesca, movimentação portuária, indústria ou esgoto doméstico, onde os peixes são um dos animais aquáticos mais atingidos, sendo capazes de refletir os impactos diretamente em seu organismo. Assim, o objetivo desse estudo foi realizar o biomonitoramento de um estuário da Costa Equatorial Amazônica por meio de análises de PAHs (Hidrocarboneto Policiclico Aromáticos) na água, além de metais traços, alterações histopatológicas e análises de micronúcleos eritrocitários em Sciades herzbergii.. O S. herzbergii foi utilizado como espécie modelo, devido seu comportamento estuarino residente. Amostras de gônadas e brânquias foram submetidas a avaliações histopatológicas. A quantificação de metais traços foi realizada em amostras de músculos esqueléticos dos animais coletados, onde foram encontrados teores de Chumbo (Pb), Cobre (Cu), Zinco (Zn), Cádmio (Cd), Magnésio (Mg), Ferro (Fe) e Alumínio (AL), e foram encontradas em concentrações acima dos limites recomendados, à exceção do Cádmio (Cd). A análise dos PAHs revelou a presença de Naftaleno e Acenafteno nas amostras de água. Análises histopatológicas e genotóxicas revelaram lesões em 100% dos espécimes estudados, resultados estes, potencialmente associados à presença de PAH e de metais traços, tanto na água quanto nos tecidos animais, comprovando um cenário geral de contaminação ambiental implicando diretamente em risco à saúde e sobrevivência da biota local. Esse estudo mostra a relevância do biomonitoramento contínuo dos ecossistemas estuarinos, afim de nortear autoridades no manejo de efluentes e assegurar o desenvolvimento evolutivo de espécies estuarinas, sobretudo dos peixes de importância na culinária regional, diretamente relacionados à segurança alimentar humana.

Abstract Estuaries are constantly subject to continuous environmental impacts of human activities, such as fisheries, port or industry, and domestic sewage, with fish being one of the most affected aquatic animals, reflecting the impacts directly on their bodies. Thus, the aim of this study was to carry out the biomonitoring of an estuary located on the Amazonian Equatorial Coast through analysis of PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) in the water, in addition to trace metals, histopathological alterations and analysis of erythrocyte micronuclei in Sciades herzbergii. S. herzbergii was used as a model species, due to its estuarine-resident behavior. Gonad and gill samples were subjected to histopathological evaluations. The quantification of trace metals was performed in samples of skeletal muscles of the animals collected, where concentrations of Lead (Pb), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Cadmium (Cd), Magnesium (Mg), Iron (Fe) and Aluminum (Al) were found. Except for Cadmium (Cd), all the concentrations were above the recommended limits. The PAHs analysis revealed the presence of Naphthalene and Acenaphthene in the water samples Histopathological and genotoxic analyses revealed of lesions in 100% of the study specimens. Thus, the histological and genotoxic alterations found in 100% of S. herzbergii specimens captured in São José Bay-MA are potentially associated with PAH concentrations present in the water. These results are potentially associated with the presence of PAH and trace metals, both in water and in animal tissues, inferring a general scenario of environmental contamination which directly implies a risk to the health and survival of the local biota. This study shows the relevance of continuous biomonitoring of estuarine ecosystems, in order to guide authorities regarding sewage management and ensure the evolutionary development of estuarine species, especially fishes of importance in the local cuisine, therefore related to human food security.

Resumo Existem muitos métodos de dimensionamento de blocos de fundações, mas ainda não há consenso sobre qual método fornece a melhor abordagem para o engenheiro de projetos. No Brasil, muitos projetistas de estruturas utilizam o método clássico de Blévot, no entanto, com a revisão da norma NBR 6118 de projeto de estruturas de concreto em 2014, o meio técnico tem sido confrontado com dúvidas quanto a aplicabilidade desse método pela regulamentação vigente. De forma a contribuir com o tema, recentemente foi desenvolvido um modelo de bielas e tirantes que relaciona o método clássico com os conceitos mais atuais de modelos de bielas e tirantes. As resistências teóricas de blocos sobre 4 estacas obtidas através de vários modelos de bielas e tirantes são comparadas com ensaios experimentais. Os resultados obtidos mostram que o modelo recentemente desenvolvido é adequado para o dimensionamento de blocos rígidos.

Abstract There are many methods for designing pile caps, but there is still no consensus on which one provides the best approach for the practical engineers. In Brazil, many structural designers use the classical Blévot method; however, the applicability of the method has been questioned after the revision of the NBR 6118 standard for design of concrete structures in 2014. To support structural designers, a strut-and-tie model has recently been developed that relates the classical method to the most current concepts of strut-and-tie models. The theoretical bearing capacity of four-pile cap obtained through several strut-and-tie models are compared with experimental tests. The results show that this recently developed model is suitable for the design of deep pile cap.

Este artigo apresenta uma investigação da segurança de elementos estruturais submetidos à flexão simples, em concreto armado, em aço e em material misto, e dimensionados segundo as normas NBR8681:2003, NBR6118:2007 e NBR8800:2008. O estudo permite uma comparação da segurança relativa de vigas produzidas com estes materiais e através destas normas. Estudos comparativos entre diferentes materiais são raros na literatura. Resultados da presente investigação mostram que, enquanto os índices de confiabilidade dos elementos de concreto são satisfatórios, as vigas metálicas apresentam resultados abaixo dos limites estabelecidos por normas internacionais. No caso das vigas mistas, os índices de confiabilidade encontrados estão entre os valores para concreto e aço.

This paper presents an investigation on the safety of structural elements submitted to pure bending, produced in reinforced concrete, in steel and steel-concrete composites, and designed according to Brazilian codes NBR8681:2003, NBR6118:2007 and NBR8800:2008. The study allows a comparison of the relative safety of beams produced with these materials and designed using these codes. Comparative studies between the performances of different materials are difficult to find in the published literature. The present study shows that reliability indexes for reinforced concrete beams are satisfactory; however, results for steel beams are below limit values established in international design standards. Reliability indexes found herein for steel-concrete composite beams are intermediate to concrete and steel beams.

Esta revisão examina as razões que justificam um interesse crescente da indústria química pelos processos eletrolíticos. Reveem-se as indústrias químicas, nas quais compostos orgânicos e inorgânicos são processados e descrevem-se os avanços tecnológicos mais relevantes. Inicialmente, abordam-se processos bem estabelecidos, como as indústrias cloroalcalinas de produção de alumínio, p-aminofenol, adiponitrila, etileno glicol, antraquinona, produtos perfluorados, ácido glioxílico e L-cisteína. Face à grande quantidade de informação disponível, o assunto é tratado com base científica, mas de modo bastante simplificado. Posteriormente, descrevem-se processos orgânicos e inorgânicos emergentes, nomeadamente processos eletroquímicos mediados e síntese em líquidos iónicos. Estabelecem-se paralelos entre síntese química e síntese eletroquímica. Estimula-se o interesse nos processos de eletrossíntese, particularmente em líquidos iónicos, não desmerecendo a importância das vias puramente químicas de síntese orgânica e inorgânica.

This review examines the reasons for increasing interest towards electrolyses by the chemical industry, reviews the electrochemical industries as most of them now exist, and provides a status report on the key technological advances which are occurring to meet present and future needs. Classical industries like those of chloroalkali, aluminium, p-aminophenol, adiponitrile, ethylene glycol, anthraquinone, perfluorinated products, glyoxylic acid and L-cysteine are initially covered. Considering the large amount of available publications in these topics of electrochemical engineering, the covered relevant information is treated at a scientific level, although in a simplified way. Then the paper deals with emerging inorganic and organic processes, e.g. electrosynthesis in ionic liquids and mediated electrochemical processes, and finishes by assessing what the future development trend might be given the electrochemical and non electrochemical competing influences. With this approach it is hoped to stimulate the interest of chemical engineers and scientists non-specialised in electrochemical routes, and to review some cutting edge research, particularly as far as electrosynthesis in ionic liquids is concerned.

As técnicas de análise superficial representam um poderoso arsenal para a análise prática de superfícies. Neste artigo, mostra-se como se empregam as técnicas clássicas no estudo da oxidação de metais a alta temperatura, facilitando a descrição do processo de oxidação e indicando formas de a reduzir.

Surface analytical techniques represent a powerful arsenal for practical surface analysis. Here it is shown how the classical techniques are applied to study high temperature oxidation of metals, facilitating the description of the oxidation process and indicating ways to reduce oxidation.

The electrical properties of p-type layers of indium phosphide (InP), formed by the diffusion of zinc into n-type material, are studied by Hall Effect measurements. A wide range of diffusion conditions are used and both homogeneously doped specimens and those containing a zinc atom concentration gradient are produced. A non-correspondence of atom and carrier concentrations is indicated, confirming previous four point resistivity studies. Carrier profiles are achieved by both serial sectioning and multiple specimen techniques. Contacting procedures are developed from which plots of carrier mobility versus carrier concentration, in the range 5 x 10(17) - 5 x 10(19) cm- 3, are produced for p-n-p InP. In the main, present results showed good reproducibility and conformed to the "rules" of the Van der Pauw technique.

The diffusion of zinc into n-type InP has been studied by four-point probe electrical measurements on homogeneously doped crystals at 750 ºC. The zinc carrier concentration in the diffused layer was approximately 3 x 10(18) cm-3 and its mobility was assumed to be about 40 cm² V-1 s-1. It was observed that the concentration of free carriers throughout the entire diffused region is always less than the number of introduced impurity atoms. Possible reasons are discussed to explain the observed differences. Moreover this non-correlation phenomenon did provide substantial backing to the Hall Effect and C-V measurements that are being carried out to further analyse the Zn-InP diffused layer.
