ABSTRACT Introduction: Chemicals have a relatively low prevalence among the causes of burns. However, they are important because most accidents occur in the scope of work and in an economically active population. The objective is to perform an analysis of the profile of patients hospitalized for chemical burns in a Burn Unit. Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients hospitalized in the Burn Unit of the State Hospital of Bauru, Bauru, SP, Brazil, between 2008 and 2018. Multiple variables were analyzed, such as age, gender, chemical agent, place where the accident occurred, need for ICU stay and days of hospitalization. Results: In total, 40 (1.7%) patients were hospitalized due to chemical burn. The mean age was 35 years, with predominance of males, with 30 (75%) individuals. The main site of trauma was in the workplace, in 20 cases (50%). Based accidents were responsible for 20 (50%) admissions. The mean burned body surface was 7.5%. Eye burn occurred in 11 (27.5%) patients. Intensive care bed was required for 10 (25%) cases. When comparing accidents between acid iced substances and bases, we noted a difference in the number of ICU patients, with eight patients in lesions involving bases and two with acids (p=0.04). Conclusion: The sample and results presented in this article are similar to the world literature on the subject. We evidenced the importance of this burn in the work environment and the involvement of individuals of active age, as well as the greater severity of accidents with chemical substance.

RESUMO Introdução: Substâncias químicas apresentam uma prevalência relativamente baixa dentre as causas de queimaduras. Porém, têm importância, pois a maioria dos acidentes ocorrem no âmbito do trabalho e em população economicamente ativa. O objetivo é realizar uma análise do perfil dos pacientes internados por queimaduras químicas em uma Unidade de Queimados. Métodos: Análise retrospectiva de pacientes internados na Unidade de Queimados do Hospital Estadual de Bauru, Bauru, SP, Brasil, entre os anos de 2008 e 2018. Múltiplas variáveis foram analisadas, como idade, sexo, agente químico, local onde ocorreu o acidente, necessidade de internação em UTI e dias de hospitalização. Resultados: No total, 40 (1,7%) pacientes foram internados devido a queimadura química. A média de idade foi de 35 anos, com predominância do sexo masculino, com 30 (75%) indivíduos. O principal local do trauma foi no ambiente de trabalho, em 20 casos (50%). Acidentes com base foram responsáveis por 20 (50%) internações. A superfície corporal queimada média foi de 7,5%. Queimadura ocular ocorreu em 11 (27,5%) pacientes. Leito de terapia intensiva foi necessário para 10 (25%) casos. Quando comparados os acidentes entre substâncias ácidas e bases, evidenciamos diferença no número de pacientes internados em UTI, com oito pacientes em lesões envolvendo bases e dois com ácidos (p=0,04). Conclusão: A casuística e resultados apresentados neste artigo são semelhantes à literatura mundial sobre o assunto. Evidenciamos a importância dessa queimadura no ambiente de trabalho e o acometimento de indivíduos em idade ativa, assim como a maior gravidade de acidentes com substância química.

RESUMO Introdução: A infecção pelo HIV e as queimaduras são um problema comum de saúde pública, principalmente em países de baixa e média renda. Há uma escassez na literatura sobre a epidemiologia de pacientes HIV positivos hospitalizados em unidades de queimados. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar dados clínicoepidemiológicos de pacientes HIV positivos internados em uma Unidade de Terapia de Queimaduras. Métodos: Realizada análise retrospectiva de pacientes com diagnóstico de HIV internados na Unidade de Terapia de Queimados do Hospital Estadual de Bauru entre os anos de 2008 e 2018. Resultados: No total, foram revisados 2364 prontuários e encontrados 14 (0,6%) pacientes com diagnóstico de HIV. A idade média foi 43,1 anos. Quanto ao gênero, nove (64,3%) eram masculinos e cinco (35,7%) femininos. O mecanismo mais comum foi por chama direta em 11 (78,7%) casos. A etiologia foi álcool (42,9%) em seis pacientes, em três explosão (21,5%) e os demais foram gasolina, cigarro e contato com escapamento, todos com um (7,1%) caso. A causa mais comum foi acidente, em nove (64,3%) casos, dois (14,3%) tentativa de homicídio, um (7,1%) autoextermínio e dois (14,3%) casos sem informação. Em relação à superfície corporal queimada (%SCQ), cinco (37,5%) apresentavam queimaduras de 0-10%, três (21,4%) de 11-20% e cinco (35,7%) maiores que 20%, e em um era desconhecida. Quatro (28,6%) apresentaram lesões de vias aéreas. Dois (14,3%) pacientes foram a óbito. Conclusão: A prevalência de pacientes HIV positivos queimados internados em uma unidade especializada para este tratamento se assemelha à nacional, com características semelhantes em relação a idade e gênero.

ABSTRACT Introduction: HIV infection and burns are common public health issues, especially in low- and middle-income countries. There is a paucity in the literature evaluating the epidemiology of burns hospitalization in HIV patients. This study aims to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological profile of HIV-positive patients hospitalized in a Burn Therapy Unit. Methods: A retrospective analysis of burn patients diagnosed with HIV was performed at the Therapy Unit of the State Hospital of Bauru between 2008 and 2018. Results: 2,364 medical records were reviewed, and 14 (0.6%) patients were diagnosed with HIV. The mean age was 43.1 years. Regarding gender, nine (64.3%) were male, and five (35.7%) were female. The most common mechanism was direct flame in 11 (78.7%) cases. The etiology was alcohol (42.9%) in six patients, in three explosions (21. 5%), and the others were gasoline, cigarettes and contact with exhaustion, all with one (7.1%) case. When the cause of these burns was evaluated, nine (64.3%) were due to accidents, either at work or home, two (14.3%) for attempted murder, one (7.1%) self-extermination, and two (14.3%) cases had no information. Regarding total burn surface area, five (37.5%) had burns of 0-10%, three (21.4%) 11-20% and five (35.7%) greater than 20%, and one was unknown. Four (28.6%) showed airway lesions. Two (14.3%) patients died. Conclusion: The prevalence of burned HIV-positive patients admitted to a specialized unit for this treatment is like the national one, with similar characteristics concerning age and gender.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate in vitro erosive effect of analgesics on primary tooth enamel. Material and Methods: The pH and the titratable acidity measurements of the medicines were performed in triplicate using a digital pH meter. Enamel slabs of primary teeth flat and polished were selected by initial surface microhardness analysis. Medications were selected and specimens were assigned into five groups (n=12): Dalsy; Magnopyrol; Paracetamol; Tylenol; and distilled water (negative control). Specimens were immersed in 5 ml of each group solution for 30 min, 4x/day for three days and stored in artificial saliva at 37 °C between immersions and at night. Final microhardness was determined. The data were submitted to Oneway ANOVA and Tukey's test. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was performed in three specimens of each group. Results: Medicines showed acidic pH and mean values of titratable acidity ranged from 1.46 to 11.66 ml of 0.1N NaOH. The mineral loss of Magnopyrol was statistically significant in relation to the control group (p<0.01). Magnopyrol showed higher values when compared to Tylenol (p<0.05). SEM images displayed microstructure alterations in the Paracetamol group. Conclusion: Despite the low pH values, only Magnopyrol showed greater enamel softening. Paracetamol demonstrated morphological changes in primary tooth enamel.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the emotional and social experiences of parents or caregivers of children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) in a city in the Northeastern of Brazil. Material and Methods: A quantitative and cross-sectional study was conducted among parents or caregivers of children with CL/P by interviews based on a questionnaire. Interviews were conducted during the First Smile Project in Sobral, Ceará, Brazil. All participants (n=41) agreed to participate in the interview and signed an informed consent. The data was analyzed in SPSS software version 22.0. Results: The majority of participants were female (87.2%), with a mean age of 37 years, with a low level of education and low family income. The great majority (90.2%) of the parents were not prenatally diagnosed to have CL/P babies. Of those interviewed, 56.1% mentioned that the first diagnosis of cleft lip and palate was not presented by the professionals in a clarifying way to the family. Fear (36.6%) and sadness (19.5%) were the main feelings experienced when the child was diagnosed with fissure. Feeding (48.8%) was pointed out as the main concern in caring for a child with CL/P. Conclusion: The parents and caregivers interviewed faced important emotional and social problems that must be addressed by the professional team that assists the child with CL/P.

Objectives: to discuss women's conception about living with the human immunodeficiency virus and the impossibility of breastfeeding. Method: descriptive, exploratory study, with a qualitative approach, conducted with 12 women in a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Data collection, through individual and semi-structured interviews, occurred between June 2017 and March 2018. The data were analyzed using the methodological framework of content analysis. Results: most participants were diagnosed during prenatal care and delivery. They recognized the benefits of breastfeeding and followed the recommendation not to breastfeed. Conclusion: the participants recognized the benefits of breastfeeding and, even if sad and frustrated at the impossibility of breastfeeding, transcended these feelings to protect their child, reaffirming the role attributed by society and culture and gender asymmetries related to reproduction and motherhood.

Objetivos: discutir la concepción de mujeres sobre vivir con el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana y la imposibilidad de amamantar. Método: estudio exploratorio descriptivo, con enfoque cualitativo, con 12 mujeres en hospital universitario de Río de Janeiro, Brasil. Recopilación de datos a través de entrevistas individuales y semiestructuradas, entre junio de 2017 y marzo de 2018. Datos analizados por el marco metodológico del análisis de contenido. Resultados: la mayoría de los participantes fueron diagnosticados durante el prenatal y parto. Reconocieron los beneficios de la lactancia materna y siguieron la recomendación de no amamantar. Conclusión: los participantes reconocieron los beneficios de la lactancia materna y, aunque tristes y frustradas ante la imposibilidad de la lactancia materna, trascendieron estos sentimientos para proteger al niño, reafirmando el papel atribuido por la sociedad y la cultura y las asimetrías de género relacionadas con la reproducción y maternidad.

Método: estudo descritivo, exploratório, com abordagem qualitativa, realizado com 12 mulheres em um hospital universitário no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. A coleta de dados, por meio de entrevista individual e semiestruturada, ocorreu entre junho de 2017 e março de 2018. Os dados foram analisados mediante a utilização do referencial metodológico da análise de conteúdo. Resultados: a maioria das participantes foi diagnosticada no pré-natal e no parto. Elas reconheceram os benefícios da amamentação e seguiram a recomendação de não amamentar. Conclusão: as participantes reconheceram os benefícios da amamentação e, mesmo que tristes e frustradas diante da impossibilidade de amamentar, transcenderam esses sentimentos, por proteção ao filho, reafirmando o papel atribuído pela sociedade e pela cultura e as assimetrias de gênero relacionadas à reprodução e maternidade.

Abstract The use of post-alignment procedures has been suggested to prevent the identification of false-positives in massive DNA sequencing data. Insertions and deletions are most likely to be misinterpreted by variant calling algorithms. Using known genetic variants as references for post-processing pipelines can minimize mismatches. They allow reads to be correctly realigned and recalibrated, resulting in more parsimonious variant calling. In this work, we aim to investigate the impact of using different sets of common variants as references to facilitate variant calling from whole-exome sequencing data. We selected reference variants from common insertions and deletions available within the 1K Genomes project data and from databases from the Latin American Database of Genetic Variation (LatinGen). We used the Genome Analysis Toolkit to perform post-processing procedures like local realignment, quality recalibration procedures, and variant calling in whole exome samples. We identified an increased number of variants from the call set for all groups when no post-processing procedure was performed. We found that there was a higher concordance rate between variants called using 1K Genomes and LatinGen. Therefore, we believe that the increased number of rare variants identified in the analysis without realignment or quality recalibration indicated that they were likely false-positives.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to discuss care needs of wheelchair pregnant women in the light of Collière’s Theory of Caring. Methods: qualitative, descriptive, exploratory, with eight women, between August 2014 and March 2015, in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The method of data collection was the life history. The theoretical reference used was Marie-Françoise Collière’s Theory of Caring. The thematic type analysis identified three categories: pregnancy planning; support and prejudice of family and health professionals; and caring for the wheelchair pregnant woman. Results: prejudice, fear, lack of support, lack of knowledge about the maintenance of pregnancy and childbirth interfered negatively in the process of gestation. Participants had urinary tract infection, miscarriages and preterm birth. Final Considerations: gestation in these women should predict possible intercurrences, which makes it imperative to train professionals in integral care to promote and protect health.

RESUMEN Objetivos: discutir las necesidades de cuidado de la mujer embarazada en silla a la luz de la Teoría del Cuidar de Collière. Métodos: cualitativo, descriptivo, exploratorio, con ocho mujeres, entre agosto de 2014 y marzo de 2015, en Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. El método de recolección de datos fue la historia de la vida. El referencial teórico utilizado fue la Teoría del Cuidar de Marie-Françoise Collière. El análisis del tipo temático identificó tres categorias: planificación de las gestaciones; apoyo y preconcepto de la familia y de los profesionales de la salud; y cuidados a la mujer en silla en la gestación. Resultados: preconcepto, miedo, falta de apoyo, desconocimiento acerca del mantenimiento del embarazo y del parto interfirieron negativamente en el proceso de gestar. Las participantes presentaron infección urinaria, abortos y partos prematuros. Consideraciones Finales: la gestación en esas mujeres debe prever posibles intercurrencias, lo que hace imperiosa la capacitación de los profesionales en el cuidado integral para promover y proteger la salud.

O referencial teórico utilizado foi a Teoria do Cuidar, de Marie-Françoise Collière. Abstract For a better interpretation of variants, evidence-based databases, such as ClinVar, compile data on the presumed relationships between variants and phenotypes. In this study, we aimed to analyze the pattern of sequencing depth in variants from whole-exome sequencing data in the 1000 Genomes project phase 3, focusing on the variants present in the ClinVar database that were predicted to affect protein-coding regions. We demonstrate that the distribution of the sequencing depth varies across different sequencing centers (pair-wise comparison, p < 0.001). Most importantly, we found that the distribution pattern of sequencing depth is specific to each facility, making it possible to correctly assign 96.9% of the samples to their sequencing center. Thus, indicating the presence of a systematic bias, related to the methods used in the different facilities, which generates significant variations in breadth and depth in whole-exome sequencing data in clinically relevant regions. Our results show that methodological differences, leading to significant heterogeneity in sequencing depth, may potentially influence the accuracy of genetic diagnosis. Furthermore, our findings highlight how it is still challenging to integrate results from different sequencing centers, which may also have an impact on genomic research.

RESUMO O estado nutricional do paciente submetido ao transplante de células-tronco hematopoéticas é considerado fator de risco independente, podendo influenciar na qualidade de vida e na tolerância ao tratamento proposto. O comprometimento do estado nutricional durante o transplante de células-tronco hematopoéticas ocorre principalmente devido aos efeitos adversos decorrentes do condicionamento ao qual o paciente é submetido. Desta forma, a adequada avaliação nutricional e o acompanhamento durante o transplante de células-tronco hematopoéticas tornam-se imprescindíveis. ABSTRACT The nutritional status of patients submitted to hematopoietic stem cell transplant is considered an independent risk factor, which may influence on quality of life and tolerance to the proposed treatment. The impairment of nutritional status during hematopoietic stem cell transplant occurs mainly due to the adverse effects resulting from conditioning to which the patient is subjected. Therefore, adequate nutritional evaluation and follow-up during hematopoietic stem cell transplant are essential. To emphasize the importance of nutritional status and body composition during treatment, as well as the main characteristics related to the nutritional assessment of the patient, the Brazilian Consensus on Nutrition in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant: Adults was prepared, aiming to standardize and update Nutritional Therapy in this area. Dietitians, nutrition physicians and hematologists from 15 Brazilian centers thar are references in hematopoietic stem cell transplant took part.

RESUMO Enxaqueca piora o sofrimento do paciente que tem esclerose múltipla (EM). ID-migraine é uma ferramenta útil para seleção de pacientes com enxaqueca e Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) é um questionário que avalia o impacto da doença. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a presença e impacto de enxaqueca em pacientes com EM. Métodos: Pacientes diagnosticados com EM e tratados em clínicas especializadas foram convidados a responder um questionário online se também apresentassem cefaleia. Resultados: O estudo incluiu 746 participantes com cefaleia e EM que preencheram completamente as respostas. Foram 625 mulheres e 121 homens, sendo 69% dos pacientes com idade entre 20 e 40 anos. Enxaqueca foi identificada em 404 pacientes (54,1%) e moderado a grave impacto da doença foi observado em 68,3% dos casos. Conclusão: Enxaqueca é uma cefaleia primária frequente e incapacitante relatada por pacientes com EM.

ABSTRACT Migraine adds to the burden of patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS). The ID-migraine is a useful tool for screening migraine, and the Migraine Disability Assessment questionnaire can evaluate disease burden. The aim of the present study was to assess the presence and burden of migraine in patients with MS. Methods: Patients diagnosed with MS attending specialized MS units were invited to answer an online survey if they also experienced headache. Results: The study included 746 complete responses from patients with MS and headache. There were 625 women and 121 men, and 69% of all the patients were aged between 20 and 40 years. Migraine was identified in 404 patients (54.1%) and a moderate-to-high burden of disease was observed in 68.3% of the patients. Conclusion: Migraine is a frequent and disabling type of primary headache reported by patients with MS.

RESUMO OBJETIVO: Investigar o perfil de motivações para o tabagismo entre pacientes internados em um hospital do sul do Brasil. MÉTODOS: Estudo tipo survey que incluiu pacientes tabagistas hospitalizados. Utilizou-se a Escala de Razões para Fumar Modificada (ERPFM) e seus domínios, analisados em função do sexo e do grau de dependência. RESULTADOS: A amostra foi composta por 85 adultos (média de 53 anos), com baixa escolaridade/renda familiar e equilibrada quanto ao sexo (masculino= 52,9%) e por especialidade clínica (48%) ou cirúrgica (47%). A maioria estava em estágio motivacional Ação (68%), com carga tabágica (mediana= 39 anos/maços) e grau de dependência à nicotina elevados (56,4%). Os domínios de maior escore da ERPFM foram: Prazer de Fumar (4,34 ± 1,2), Relaxamento/Redução da Tensão (4,24 ± 1,2) e Dependência (3,8 ± 1,4). De forma significativa, com maior pontuação, as mulheres apresentaram o domínio Relaxamento/Redução da Tensão (4,7 ± 0,9). Naqueles com maior grau de dependência, observou-se com significância, escores mais elevados nos domínios Automatismo/Hábito e Estimulação. CONCLUSÕES: Prazer de Fumar e Relaxamento/Redução da Tensão, especialmente em mulheres e Automatismo, naqueles mais dependentes, são fatores que devem ser mais valorizados em futuras estratégias de cessação de tabagismo em hospitalizados.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: To investigate the profile of motivations for smoking among inpatients at a hospital in southern Brazil. METHODS: A survey study involving hospitalized smokers. The Modified Reasons for Smoking Scale (MRFSS) and its domains were analyzed according to gender and dependence degree. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 85 adults (mean age 53 years), low schooling/family income, and well-adjusted in terms of gender (male= 52.9%) and clinical (48%) or surgical (47%) specialty. Most were in Action as the motivational stage (68%), with elevated smoking exposure (median = 39 years/packs) and dependence degree of nicotine (56.4%). The highest domains of the MRFSS were: Smoking Pleasure (4.34 ± 1.2), Relaxation/Tension Reduction (4.24 ± 1.2) and Dependence (3.8±1.4). Significantly, women presented higher scores, in domain Relaxation/Tension Reduction (4.7±0.9). In those with elevated nicotine dependence, higher scores were observed in the Automatism/Habit and Stimulation domains. CONCLUSIONS: Smoking Pleasure and Relaxation/Tension Reduction, especially in women and Automatism, in those more dependents, are factors that should be more highlighted in future strategies for smoking cessation in inpatients.

A produção de milho pipoca é crescente e necessita do uso de sementes vigorosas. O teste de envelhecimento acelerado é usado para avaliar o vigor de sementes, promovendo a desintegração do sistema de membranas. A desintegração das membranas pode ser avaliada pelo teste de condutividade elétrica. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos causados por diferentes períodos de envelhecimento acelerado e iões no exsudato do teste de condutividade elétrica e as suas relações com a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de milho pipoca. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, sendo que as sementes foram submetidas a oito períodos de envelhecimento acelerado (zero, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144 e 168 horas) e avaliadas quanto teor de água (%), primeira contagem de germinação (%), germinação final (%), índice de velocidade de germinação, condutividade elétrica (μS cm-1 g-1) e comprimentos da parte aérea e da raiz primária das plântulas. A germinação e vigor de sementes de milho pipoca e a quantidade de lexiviados no teste da condutividade elétrica foram influenciados pelo aumento do período de exposição ao envelhecimento acelerado. Este, a partir de 72 horas, produz resultados que se refletem no potencial de vigor e lexiviados das sementes.

The production of popcorn has an increasing demand and requires the use of vigorous seeds. The accelerated aging test is used to evaluate seed’s vigor, promoting the disruption of the membrane system. The disruption of membranes can be evaluated by the electrical conductivity test. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects caused by different periods of accelerated aging and the ions in the exudate of the electrical conductivity test and its interactions with the physiological quality of popcorn seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized with seeds being submitted to eight accelerated aging periods (zero, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144 and 168 hours). Water content (%), first count of germination (%), final germination (%), germination speed index, electrical conductivity (μS cm-1 g-1) and length of aerial portion and primary roots of seedlings were evaluated. The germination and vigor of popcorn seeds and the amount of leachate in the electrical conductivity test were influenced by the increasing exposure period to accelerated aging. The period of 72 hours of exposure to accelerated aging produces results that reflect on the vigor potential and leachate of the seeds.

Resumo: A oferta nacional de cultivares de milho pipoca é pequena, contudo a produção é crescente. Assim, a busca por testes que ofereçam rapidez e informações seguras sobre o potencial fisiológico das sementes torna-se de fundamental importância. Objetivou-se avaliar a eficiência do teste de envelhecimento acelerado na avaliação da qualidade fisiológica de lotes de sementes de milho pipoca, testando-se diferentes períodos e temperaturas de exposição. Foram utilizadas sementes de milho pipoca do híbrido AP 8203 provenientes de três lotes. Para a caracterização inicial dos lotes, determinou-se o teor de água, a primeira e a contagem final do teste de germinação e a emergência em canteiro. O teste de envelhecimento acelerado foi realizado em esquema fatorial 3x4x2. Após o envelhecimento, determinou-se o teor de água, e as sementes foram submetidas aos testes de germinação e condutividade elétrica. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado. O vigor foi afetado durante o envelhecimento devido ao aumento da quantidade de lixiviados detectado no teste de condutividade elétrica. O lote de sementes 3 foi o mais vigoroso pelo teste de envelhecimento conduzido por 48 h na temperatura de 45 ºC. O teste de envelhecimento acelerado utilizando a temperatura de 42 ºC, durante 48 h, fornece informações consistentes que permitem diferenciar lotes de sementes de milho pipoca.

Abstract: Despite the insufficient internal supply of popcorn kernel cultivars, the Brazilian production is continuously increasing. Therefore, searching for tests that offer fast results and reliable information on the physiological potential of the seeds is very important. The objective of this study was to assess the efficiency of the accelerated aging test, by using different times and exposure temperatures, for the evaluation of the physiological quality of popcorn seed lots. Popcorn seeds from three lots of the hybrid AP 8203 were used. For the initial characterization of the lots, the following tests were conducted: seed moisture content, first and final germination count, and field emergence. The accelerated aging test was performed in a 3x4x2 factorial scheme. After aging, the seeds were tested for moisture content, germination, and electrical conductivity. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design. The characteristic vigor was affected during aging, as evidenced by the increase in the amount of leachate detected by the electrical conductivity test. Seed lot 3 was most vigorous in the aging test conducted for 48 h at 45 °C. The accelerated aging test at 42 ºC for 48 h provides consistent information to differentiate seed lots of popcorn.

ABSTRACT Objective to learn how women crack users perceive the drug’s influence on pregnancy and childbirth. Method in this quanti-qualitative study, the participants were eighteen women crack users admitted to a maternity facility in southern Brazil in 2014. Data were collected by interview and then submitted to content analysis, with research ethics committee approval (Protocol No. 135/2013 and CAAE No. 23116004845/2010-52). Results the women were found to seek family support to overcome consumption of crack and prostitution. They mentioned losing weight, not producing milk, and failing to undergo antenatal care due to use of crack. They tried to rebuild a stable family relationship. Some gave birth normally, but others had complications, including premature labor and miscarriage. Conclusion nurses need to equip themselves in order to assist women crack users to experience pregnancy and childbirth, by ensuring their safety and care for their newborn babies.

RESUMEN Objetivo conocer la percepción de mujeres usuarias de crack sobre la influencia de la droga en el embarazo y el parto. Método investigación cuantitativa y cualitativa que tuvo lugar en una maternidad del sur de Brasil, en 2014. Participaron dieciocho mujeres usuarias de crack atendidas en el sector. Los datos fueron recolectados por medio de entrevistas sometidas a análisis de contenido, tras aprobación del proyecto en el Comité de Ética en Investigación, conforme protocolo nº 135/2013 y CAAE nº 23116004845/2010-52. Resultados se constató que buscan el apoyo de la familia, la superación del consumo de crack y de la prostitución. Mencionaron que adelgazaron y que no producen leche y, además, no realizaron el prenatal debido al consumo de crack. Intentaron construir una relación familiar estable. Algunas tuvieron parto natural, pero otras presentaron complicaciones como parto prematuro y aborto. Conclusión los enfermeros tienen que equiparse, ayudando a la mujer usuaria de crack a vivenciar el embarazo y el parto, garantizando su seguridad y cuidado al recién nacido.

RESUMO Objetivo conhecer a percepção de mulheres usuárias de crack sobre a influência da droga na gestação e parto. Método pesquisa quantiqualitativa realizada em uma maternidade no sul do Brasil, em 2014. Participaram 18 mulheres usuárias de crack atendidas no setor. Os dados foram coletados por entrevistas submetidas à análise de conteúdo, após aprovação do projeto no Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa, mediante protocolo nº 135/2013 e CAAE nº 23116004845/2010-52. Resultados constatou-se que buscam o apoio da família, a superação do consumo de crack e da prostituição. Mencionaram ter perdido peso, não ter produzido leite e não ter realizado o pré-natal devido ao uso de crack. Tentaram construir uma relação familiar estável. Algumas tiveram parto normal, mas outras apresentaram complicações, tendo parto prematuro e aborto. Conclusão os enfermeiros precisam instrumentalizar-se, auxiliando a mulher usuária de crack a vivenciar a gravidez e o parto, garantindo sua segurança e cuidado ao recém-nascido.
