Abstract: In recent decades, Wixaritari (Huichols) of western Mexico have been protagonists in high-profile ecological conflicts. This paper focuses on the frictions between them and the non-indigenous activists and environmentalists with whom they collaborate. In terms of Descola’s anthropology of ontologies, we could speak of the co-existence of Wixarika animism, New Age analogism and scientific naturalism, but should not rely too much on categorizations of this type. The salient point here is that Wixarika animists understand the other ontologies better than vice versa, so we conclude that ecologists and activists would benefit from enhancing their understanding of how Huichol cosmopolitics work. For Wixaritari, political practice always begins with the defense of autonomy and indigenous rights, but it is also important to emphasize that for them nature is not something given; rather it is produced through initiation rituals, so Huichols defend not only a pre-existing ritual geography, but also the right to permanently reinvent it. Living with Huichols makes it easy to understand that their aim is not to pursue some broad environmental goal like “saving the planet”, but to strengthen their community organization; so in a certain sense what they do through such practices is create, re-create and, we might say, save the world.

Resumen: Durante las últimas décadas, wixaritari (huicholes) del Occidente de México han sido protagonistas de importantes conflictos ecológicos. Aquí nos enfocaremos en las fricciones entre ellos y los activistas no indígenas con quienes colaboran. En términos de la antropología de las ontologías de Descola, podríamos hablar de la coexistencia del naturalismo científico, animismo huichol y analogismo New Age. No hay que confiar demasiado en este tipo de categorizaciones. El punto más interesante es que los animistas entienden mejor a las otras ontologías, y pensamos que los ambientalistas y activistas se beneficiarían de una mejor comprensión de la cosmopolítica huichola. Para los wixaritari, la práctica política siempre parte de la defensa de la autonomía y de los derechos indígenas. Por otra parte, vale la pena insistir que para los huicholes la naturaleza no es algo dado, sino que se produce durante rituales de iniciación, así que los wixaritari no solamente defienden una geografía ritual ya existente, sino también el derecho de reinventarla. Conviviendo con los wixaritari es fácil darse cuenta que su meta no es perseguir una meta ambientalista, como salvar el planeta, sino de fortalecer su organización comunitaria y, de cierta manera, lo que hacen con esta práctica es crear, recrear, y si queremos decirlo así, salvar el mundo.

This essay discusses Huichol concepts of life and personhood in the context of transformational ritual relations: shamanic initiation (transformation into an ancestor), what I call "anti-initiation" (transformation into a Mestizo), and the "supernatural" alliance between humans and corn (the basis of humanity). Parting from a critique of symmetric dualism in world-view-studies, emphasis is put on all kind of discontinuities, ambiguities, epistemological brakes, and, above all, "dividuality".

Este ensayo parte de una serie de conceptos claves huicholes sobre la persona y la vida y se propone analizarlos en el contexto de un conjunto de transformaciones rituales, es decir, la iniciación chamánica (convertirse en ancestro), lo que llamo la "anti-iniciación" (convertirse en Mestizo) y la alianza matrimonial "sobrenatural" entre hombres y maíz (que da origen a la humanidad). Asimismo, se argumenta en contra del binarismo simple en los estudios de cosmovisiones indígenas. Para entender la "dividualidad" y la reproducción del cosmos huichol, rupturas y discontinuidades resultan importantes como procesos de creación.

In the mythical origins of all things, plants, animals and human beings, all belonged to an undifferentiated unit, coexisting without rules and communication problems, because they all spoke and understood each other. Then order was established based on different categories, exchange-rules (ie. the taboo of incest) and alternating rhythms of segments of time (night and day, dry and raining seasons). For different circumstances an ancestor became one thing and another became something else. But all animated beings of the universe -a very large category- descend from the same group of ancestors turned into gods. This means that human beings, animals, plants and natural elements can communicate although with great difficulty -learning to communicate requires a chamanic initiation. Therefore the separation between nature and society refers to the mythical time, not to the present time.

En un nivel diferente de análisis encontramos la concepción de que en los orígenes míticos todas las cosas, especies de plantas, animales y seres humanos, formaban una unidad indiferenciada, conviviendo en ausencia de reglas y sin problemas de comunicación, ya que todos se hablaban y entendían. Luego se estableció el orden, basado en diferenciaciones categóricas, reglas de intercambio (ergo, el tabú del incesto) y una alternancia rítmica de segmentos temporales (día-noche, temporada de sequía-temporada de lluvias). Por diferentes circunstancias un antepasado se transformó en x cosa y otro en y. Pero todos los seres animados del universo -una categoría bastante amplia descienden del mismo grupo de ancestros deificados. Esto implica que los seres humanos, los animales, las plantas y los elementos naturales pueden comunicarse entre sí, pero con mucha dificultad -aprender a comunicarse significa someterse a una iniciación chamánica. Así, la no separación entre naturaleza y sociedad se refiere al tiempo mítico, no a la "actualidad".
