Abstract Tilapia is one of the most important aquaculture species due to the desirable characteristics as easy reproduction and quick growth in several farming systems, including the recirculating aquaculture systems RAS. In this, the high flow of water to remove waste casually stimulates the fish to swim backset, and growth performance may be improved. Increasing the speed of swimming can improve performance within certain limits, in which however if exceeded can be harmful. Fish may be exhausted leading to impaired growth or even mortality. The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth performance of tilapia juveniles under sustained swimming exercise at different speeds. Additionally, the fish stocking density effect was tested in the sustained swimming exercise condition. In the first experiment, Nile tilapia juveniles were submitted in triplicates to sustained swimming exercise in speeds of control (not exercised), 1 BL/s (body length per second), 1.5 BL/s and 2 BL/s. In the second experiment, two fish stocking densities were tested in triplicates in sustained swimming exercise in speed of 2 BL/s and control not exercised. Fish growth performance was improved by sustained swimming exercise in speeds up to 2 BL/s. No expressive fish mortalities were observed in both experiments. The comparison between the two stocking densities does not allow us to safely say tilapia can be reared at stocking densities in order of 1,000 fish/m3, even under sustained swimming exercise. Other densities need to be tested.

Resumo A variabilidade dos organismos em uma determinada área constitui o que se denomina biodiversidade, uma das propriedades fundamentais da natureza, responsável pelo equilíbrio e estabilidade dos ecossistemas. A perda da biodiversidade tem sido uma grande preocupação para os cientistas, principalmente pelo papel desempenhado pelas atividades humanas, com potencial para desencadear circunstâncias irreversíveis. A Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) desempenha um papel importante no apoio às pesquisas nos mais diversos ramos da ciência. No final da década de 1990, a FAPESP lançou um grande programa de fomento à pesquisa em biodiversidade, denominado BIOTA/FAPESP. Até o momento, este programa financiou a realização de 26 projetos, envolvendo atividades na maior parte do Brasil, embora tenham como foco principal o estado de São Paulo. Esses projetos geraram cerca de 1.140 publicações em periódicos de alto impacto, fornecendo informações relevantes que incluem a descrição original de 1.187 espécies e 76 gêneros e a descrição complementar de 350 espécies, além de diversos trabalhos de inventário, estudos biológicos etc. O programa também tem sido fundamental para o estabelecimento ou adequação de instalações de pesquisa científica e o treinamento de novos taxonomistas. Os grupos de invertebrados terrestres mais estudados incluem os Insecta das ordens Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera e Diptera, e os Arachnida das subclasses Araneae e Acari. Projetos distintos também têm contribuído para a detecção de organismos potencialmente úteis como agentes de controle biológico e na determinação de mapas de áreas preferenciais para o estabelecimento de políticas públicas. No futuro, os grupos prioritários de estudo devem incluir os Annelida e os Nematoda, pelo potencial que ambos têm como organismos benéficos, ou pelo potencial que alguns Nematoda têm como organismos prejudiciais a plantas e animais.

Abstract The variability of the organisms living in a given area constitute what is referred to as biodiversity, one of nature’s fundamental properties, responsible for the balance and stability of ecosystems. The loss of biodiversity has been of great concern to scientists, especially because of the role played by human activities in this regard, able to lead to irreversible circumstances. The São Paulo Research Foundation (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo, FAPESP) plays a major role in supporting research efforts in the most diverse branches of science. In the late 1990´s, FAPESP launched a major program to promote research on biodiversity, named BIOTA/FAPESP. So far, this program has financed the conduction of 26 projects, involving research activities in most of Brazil, while focusing mainly the State of São Paulo. These projects have generated about 1140 publications in peer-reviewed journals of high standard, providing relevant information, including the original description of 1187 species and 76 genera, the complementary description of 350 species, as well as a number of inventory works, biological studies, etc. The program has also been instrumental in the establishment or adequacy of research facilities and training of new taxonomists. Most extensively studied groups of terrestrial invertebrates include Insecta of the orders Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera and Diptera, and Arachnida of the subclasses Araneae and Acari. Distinct projects have also contributed to the detection of organisms potentially useful as biological control agents and in the determination of maps of major interest for the establishment of public policies. In the future, priority groups for study should include the Annelida and the Nematoda, for the potential both have as beneficial organisms, or for the potential some Nematoda have as organisms harmful to plants and animals.

Abstract Scientific collections constitute a valuable source for contributions to scientific research and the training of human resources in systematics, but also other areas of biological knowledge. In this contribution, we intend to discuss these advancements in collections and the role played by FAPESP in sponsoring them, as well as a general overview of the zoological collections in São Paulo state. We also aim to stress the importance of zoological collections and the need for continuous logistic and financial support from institutions and research agencies to maintain and develop these unique repositories of biodiversity. From 1980 to the present, FAPESP supported 118 research projects focused on several areas of zoology that are directly or indirectly associated with collections. There is a constant growth in the number of projects, and the financial support provided by FAPESP through the Biota Program was paramount for the advancement of our knowledge of biodiversity in Brazil. Parallel to the scientific advances, but not less important, this support allowed curators to increase the number of specimens, and to organize, maintain and digitize them in these valuable and irreplaceable collections. Regarding the lack of new taxonomists, it is essential that FAPESP and universities in São Paulo encourage the formation of new academics in zoological groups where specialists are rare. Considering the investment provided by FAPESP, it is quite important that the institutions that benefited from these resources took greater responsibility to safeguard these collections, and they should consider including resources on their budgets to obtain safety certificates, ensuring their permanence for many generations to come. Zoological collections are a heritage of humanity and are essential not only for the improvement of our knowledge of biodiversity but also with direct applications, among other services provided by these biological resources. It is important that research and teaching institutions in São Paulo that house specimens under their care start to value more this important patrimony and this heritage, as these collections represent the most valuable testimony of our impressive biodiversity, records of our past, and windows to our future, essential to our academic, scientific, cultural and social sovereignty.

Resumo As coleções científicas constituem uma fonte valiosa para contribuições à pesquisa científica e para a formação de recursos humanos em sistemática, mas também em outras áreas do conhecimento biológico. Nesta contribuição, pretendemos discutir esses avanços nas coleções e o papel desempenhado pela FAPESP no seu patrocínio, bem como um panorama geral das coleções zoológicas do estado de São Paulo. Também pretendemos enfatizar a importância das coleções zoológicas e a necessidade de apoio logístico e financeiro contínuo de instituições e agências de pesquisa para manter e desenvolver esses repositórios únicos de biodiversidade. Ao longo de 1980 até os dias atuais, a FAPESP apoiou 118 projetos de pesquisa focados em diversas áreas da zoologia, direta ou indiretamente associados a coleções. Há um crescimento constante no número de projetos, e o apoio financeiro da FAPESP por meio do Programa Biota foi fundamental para o avanço do nosso conhecimento sobre a biodiversidade no Brasil. Paralelamente aos avanços científicos, mas não menos importante, este apoio permitiu aos curadores aumentar o número de exemplares, e organizá-los, mantê-los e digitalizá-los nestas valiosas e insubstituíveis coleções. Em relação à falta de novos taxonomistas, é fundamental que a FAPESP e as universidades paulistas estimulem a formação de novos acadêmicos em grupos zoológicos onde os especialistas são raros. Considerando o investimento realizado pela FAPESP, é de suma importância que as instituições beneficiadas com esses recursos tenham maior responsabilidade na salvaguarda desses acervos, devendo considerar a inclusão de recursos em seus orçamentos para obtenção de certificados de segurança, garantindo sua permanência por muitas gerações. As coleções zoológicas são patrimônio da humanidade, e são essenciais não apenas para o aprimoramento do nosso conhecimento sobre a biodiversidade, mas também com aplicações diretas, entre outros serviços prestados por esses recursos biológicos. É importante que as instituições de pesquisa e ensino paulistas que abrigam exemplares sob seus cuidados passem a valorizar mais esse importante patrimônio e essa herança, pois essas coleções representam o testemunho mais valioso de nossa impressionante biodiversidade, registros do nosso passado e janelas para o nosso futuro, essenciais à nossa soberania acadêmica, científica, cultural e social.

Abstract The aim of the present study was to conduct a survey of mites of the family Phytoseiidae associated with plants of the natural vegetation and cultivated forests in sites of three biomes (Amazon Forest, Cerrado and Pantanal) in the Mato Grosso State. Twenty-one species of 11 genera, of the three phytoseiid subfamilies were registered. Amblyseius Berlese was the most diverse genus, with five species. Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma was the most common species, collected from 12 plant species in five collection sites. Eleven phytoseiid species were reported for the first time in the Mato Grosso State.

Abstract Aims: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the resistance training (RT) on the lipid profile and metabolism, oxidative stress, and activity of metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) in the left ventricle (LV) of diet-induced obesity rats. Methods: Forty males Wistar rats 90 days-old were grouped into four groups (n=10): i) Sedentary group (SED); ii) Obese sedentary group, feed with high-fat diet (Ob-SED); iii) Resistance Trained group (RT), and iv) Obese Resistance trained group (Ob-RT). The LV was assayed to Obesity index, LV lipid content, citrate synthase activity, lipid peroxidation (TBARS), enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems, lipid profile, cardio-metabolic parameters, and activity of MMP-2. Results: High-fat diet was associated with manifestations of the obesity, body mass gain, and increased obesity index, accompanied by an alteration in the lipid profile. On the other hand, RT was able to prevent body weight gain, to reduce the obesity index and to improve the lipid profile, to elevate the activation of the citrate synthase, and to decrease MMP-2 activity in the LV of obese rats. Conclusion: RT positively modulated blood lipid profile and antioxidant enzymes preventing the increased activity of MMP-2 in the left ventricle from rats fed with high-fat diet.

RESUMO: A diversidade de ácaros edáficos em ambientes naturais brasileiros é pouco conhecida, especialmente no bioma Pampa na região sul do Brasil. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a diversidade e abundância da fauna edáfica de ácaros mesostigmatídeos no bioma Pampa, do sul do Brasil. Coletas de solo foram realizadas no município de Aceguá, em 2012 e 2013. Ácaros foram extraídos das amostras com o uso de funis de Berlese-Tullgren modificados. No total, 1900 ácaros mesostigmatídeos foram coletados, representando 44 espécies de 23 gêneros de 10 famílias. As famílias mais abundantes foram Rhodacaridae, Ologamasidae e Laelapidae, nesta ordem, com 903, 578 e 214 espécimes, correspondendo respectivamente a 47,5, 30,4 e 11,3% dos mesostigmatídeos coletados. Laelapidae foi a família mais diversa, sendo representada por 22 espécies. O restante das famílias foi representado por 1 - 5 espécies. Gaeolaelaps (Laelapidae) foi o gênero mais diverso, com 14 espécies. Rhodacaridae foi representada por uma única espécie, Binodacarus aceguaensis Duarte, Castilho, Cunha & Moraes, correspondendo a 47,5% dos mesostigmatídeos. Ologamasidae foi representado por quatro espécies, com Neogamasellevans sp. correspondendo a segunda espécie mais abundante, representando 27,5% dos mesostigmatídeos encontrados. Mais estudos são necessários para a identificação destes ácaros a nível de espécie, bem como para avaliar o potencial de uso destes no controle biológico aplicado.

ABSTRACT: The diversity of edaphic mites in Brazilian natural environments is little known, especially in the Pampa biome, in southern region of Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the diversity and abundance of edaphic fauna of mesostigmatid mites in a region of the Pampa biome of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Soil samples were collected in the municipality of Aceguá, in 2012 and 2013. Mites were extracted using Berlese-Tullgren modified funnels. In total, 1900 mesostigmatid mites were collected, representing 44 species from 23 genera and 10 families. The most abundant families were Rhodacaridae, Ologamasidae and Laelapidae, with respectively 903, 578 and 214 specimens, corresponding respectively to 47.5, 30.4 and 11.3% of the Mesostigmata collected. Laelapidae was the most diverse family, being represented by 22 species. The remaining families were each represented by 1-5 species. Gaeolaelaps (Laelapidae) was the most diverse genus, with 14 species. Rhodacaridae was represented by a single species, Binodacarus aceguaensis Duarte, Castilho, Cunha & Moraes, representing 47.5% of the mesostigmatids. Ologamasidae was represented by four species, with Neogamasellevans sp. corresponding to the second most abundant species, representing 27.5% of the mesostigmatids. Further analysis of the data, in terms of mite identification to species level and the potential use of the mites collected for applied biological control are needed.

The mite Mononychellus planki (McGregor) is reported for the frst time in Paraguay, collected from the different soybean producing areas.

ABSTRACT Sustained swimming (SS) usually promotes beneficial effects in growth and feed conversion of fishes. Although feed efficiency is improves at moderate water velocity, more information is required to determine the contributions of this factor on growth and body composition. Body composition and efficiency responses to the use of nutrients were determined in juvenile matrinxa Brycon amazonicus (Spix and Agassiz, 1829) fed with two dietary amounts of protein, 28 or 38% of crude protein (CP), and subjected to sustained swimming at a constant speed of 1.5 body lengths s−1 (BL s−1) or let to free swimming. The fish body composition under SS and fed with 28% of dietary protein showed 22% of increased in bulk protein and a 26% of decrease in water content in the white muscle. Red muscle depicted 70% less water content and a 10% more lipid. Nutrient retention was enhanced in fish subjected to SS and a higher gain of ethereal extract sustained was observed in the white muscle of exercised fish fed with 38% CP. The interaction between swimming and dietary protein resulted in a larger bulk of lipid in red muscle. Fish fed with 28% CP under SS at 1.5 BL s−1 presented the best utilization of dietary nutrients and body composition. Thus, this fish farming procedure is proposed as a promising management strategy for rearing matrinxa.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da densidade de estocagem associada ao exercício de natação nas respostas ao estresse de matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus). Durante 70 dias, os peixes foram submetidos a três densidades de estocagem: BD, baixa densidade de 88 peixes por metro cúbico; DI, densidade intermediária de 176 peixes por metro cúbico; e AD, alta densidade de 353 peixes por metro cúbico. Estas densidades foram combinadas com água parada (grupo não exercitado) ou com água em velocidade moderada (grupo exercitado). O estresse crônico foi observado em AD, e o cortisol e a glicose plasmática aumentaram com a densidade de estocagem. Em AD, os níveis plasmáticos de cortisol foram significativamente menores nos peixes exercitados (135 ng mL-1) do que nos não exercitados (153 ng mL-1). Os maiores acúmulos de glicogênio hepático ocorreram em peixes mantidos em DI e em natação sustentada. Os aminoácidos livres (AAL) hepáticos aumentaram com a densidade de estocagem, particularmente nos peixes não exercitados. As reservas de AAL hepáticos e de ácidos graxos livres hepáticos e musculares foram mobilizados para atender às demandas metabólicas impostas pelo exercício e pela densidade de estocagem. Os parâmetros hematológicos mantiveram-se estáveis. Os resultados são indicativos de que o matrinxã é mais resistente ao estresse quando submetido à natação sustentada e à alta densidade de estocagem que à água parada.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of stocking density associated with the swimming exercise on the stress responses of Brycon amazonicus. During 70 days, fish were subjected to three stocking densities: LD, low density of 88 fish per cubic meter; ID, intermediary density of 176 fish per cubic meter; and HD, high density of 353 fish per cubic meter. These densities were combined with static water (non-exercised group) or moderate-speed water (exercised group). Chronic stress was observed in HD, and plasma cortisol and glucose increased with the stocking densities. In HD, levels of plasma cortisol were significantly lower in exercised fish (135 ng mL-1) than in non-exercised ones (153 ng mL-1). The greatest hepatic glycogen bulks occurred in fish kept in ID and sustained swimming. Hepatic free amino acids (FAA) increased with the stocking density, particularly in non-exercised fish. The contents of FAA in the liver and of free fatty acids (FFA) in the liver and muscle were mobilized to meet the metabolic demands imposed by exercise and stocking density. The hematological parameters remained stable. The results show that Brycon amazonicus is more resistant to stress when subjected to sustained swimming and high stocking density than to static water.

Abstract AIMS To evaluate the acute effects of a resistance exercise session performed on ladder on energy metabolism, stress, and muscle damage in rats. METHODS Male Wistar rats were randomly distributed in Exercise (E) (n=30) and Control (C) (n = 20) groups. The E group performed a resistance exercise session on a vertical ladder with weights on their tails. Blood samples were collected at rest and after each climb to analyze lactate levels and ten minutes after the last climb to analyze lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), and corticosterone levels. RESULTS Blood lactate levels remained stable during exercise. Serum corticosterone, blood glucose, LDH and CK levels increased and glycogen content decreased in the E group, when compared to the C group. CONCLUSION These results suggest that resistance exercise performed on ladder is a model of high-intensity exercise. However, the stabilization of lactate during the session suggests that the aerobic metabolism is an important factor during the intervals between climbs.

Resumo Descrevemos neste trabalho a dieta do anuro Chiasmocleis leucosticta, pertencente à família Microhylidae, com base no conteúdo estomacal de 72 indivíduos (47 machos e 25 fêmeas) coletados em armadilhas-de-queda na Reserva Florestal de Morro Grande, SP. Foram identificados 1981 itens alimentares, distribuídos em 13 categorias de artrópodes, especialmente formigas, ácaros e colêmbolos. Formicidae foi a categoria de presas mais abundante e frequente, incluindo 16 gêneros pertencentes a sete subfamílias. Os dados de disponibilidade de formigas no ambiente sugerem que C. leucosticta seleciona formigas ativamente. A segunda categoria de presas mais relevante foi Acari, predominantemente representada por ácaros da subordem Oribatida. Este é o primeiro trabalho que identifica os ácaros ao nível de família na dieta de um Microhylidae. Não houve diferença estatística entre machos e fêmeas quanto à composição da dieta.

Abstract We describe here the diet of the microhylid frog Chiasmocleis leucosticta based on the stomach contents of 72 individuals (47 males and 25 females) collected in pitfall traps at the Reserva Florestal de Morro Grande, state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. We identified 1,981 food items distributed in 13 prey categories of arthropods, mainly ants, mites and collembolans. Formicidae was the most abundant and frequent prey category, including 16 genera from seven subfamilies, and data on ant availability in the habitat suggest that C. leucosticta selects ants actively. The second main prey category was Acari, predominantly represented by mites of the suborder Oribatida. This is the first work identifying mites to the family level in the diet of a Microhylidae. There was no statistical difference between males and females regarding diet composition.

Os ajustes metabólicos foram estudados em bagre do canal Ictalurus punctatus exposto a 1.5 mg L-1 de fenol (10% da CL50) por quatro dias e após recuperação por sete dias. Redução da concentração de triacilglicerol e aumento de ácidos graxos livres no músculo são indicativos de catabolismo de lipídeos. Redução de ácidos graxos livres (-31%) no fígado também indica catabolismo de lipídeos. Aumento da concentração de amônia e da atividade da aspartato aminotransferase (ASAT) no músculo, e a redução na concentração plasmática de aminoácidos sugerem aumento na captação muscular de aminoácidos. Níveis constantes de glicose e o aumento da reserva hepática de glicogênio, associados a baixos níveis de aminoácidos no plasma, indicam gliconeogênese a partir de aminoácidos. Este fato é respaldado pelo aumento de ALAT e ASAT. A indução da LDH hepática acompanhada da redução de lactato plasmático podem indicar que o lactato plasmático foi também utilizado como substrato para a gliconeogênese. As alterações bioquímicas foram exacerbadas após o período de recuperação. Reduções no conteúdo de proteína muscular e plasmática indicam proteólise. O aumento do catabolismo lipídico no fígado foi resultado de uma expressiva redução da concentração hepática de TGA (-58%). Uma preferência catabólica por lipídeos foi observada na tentativa de suprir a elevada demanda energética. Este estudo é o primeiro a abordar o perfil metabólico de I. punctatus frente à exposição ao fenol e sua capacidade de recuperação, trazendo a atenção para as consequências biológicas da contaminação ambiental.

Metabolic adjustments were studied in channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus exposed to 1.5 mg L-1 of phe nol (10% LC50) for four days and recovered for seven days. Lower triacylglycerol (TGA) stores and increased muscle fat free acids (FFA) suggest fat catabolism in muscle. Remarkable liver FFA decrease (-31%) suggests liver fat catabolism as well. Increased muscular ammonia levels and ASAT (aspartate aminotransferase) and decreased plasma aminoacids suggest higher muscular amino acid uptake. Constant levels of glucose and increased liver glycogen stores, associated with lower amino acids in plasma, indicate gluconeogenesis from amino acids. This is supported by higher hepatic ALAT and ASAT. Higher hepatic LDH followed by lower plasma lactate may indicate that plasma lactate was also used as gluconeogenic substrate. Biochemical alterations were exacerbated during the post-exposure recovery period. Reduction in muscle and plasma protein content indicate proteolysis. A higher rate of liver fat catabolism was resulted from a remarkable decrease in hepatic TGA (-58%). Catabolic preference for lipids was observed in order to supply such elevated energy demand. This study is the first insight about the metabolic profile of I. punctatus to cope with phenol plus its ability to recover, bringing attention to the biological consequences of environmental contamination.

Con el propósito de evaluar los efectos de la densidad de siembra sobre el peso corporal y la sobrevivencia de larvas de bagre rayado (Pseudoplatystoma sp), fue diseñado y construido un sistema cerrado de recirculación, el cual permitió mantener estables las variables fÃsicas y quÃmicas del agua durante todo el perÃodo experimental. Para este propósito, larvas vitelinas fueron sembradas en el sistema a tres densidades, asÃ: 10 (T1), 50 (T2) y 100 (T3) larvas por litro y monitoreadas hasta los 20 dÃas post-eclosión. Fueron evaluadas cuatro réplicas por tratamiento, mantenidas bajo fotoperiodo 0:24 (luz:oscuridad) y alimentadas hasta aparente saciedad con nauplios de Artemia salina recién eclosionados, los cuales fueron suministrados repartidos en cinco raciones por dÃa: a las 07:00, 09:00, 14:00, 18:00 y 22:00 horas. Las caracterÃsticas de calidad de agua observadas durante el ensayo fueron: oxÃgeno disuelto 5.7 ± 0.5 mg/L; temperatura 26 ± 0.8°C; pH 7.6 ± 0.2; dureza 38.2 ± 5.2 mgCaCO3/L; alcalinidad 26.5 ± 5.2 mg CaCO3/L; NH3<0.02 mg/L; salinidad 0.4 ± 0.1 g/L; conductividad 841.1 ± 38.1 µS/cm. Al final del ensayo, el peso corporal varió inversamente a la densidad de siembra: 103.0 ± 15.6; 76.1 ± 19.8 y 66.7 ± 9.3 mg, respectivamente, pero no se observaron diferencias significativas entre las dos densidades más altas P>0.05). La sobrevivencia fue mayor en la densidad de 10 larvas/L, siendo diferente estadÃsticamente entre tratamientos (86.5 ± 1.9%; 54.7 ± 2.2% y 46.9 ± 3.1% para 10, 50 y 100 larvas/L, respectivamente, P<0.01). En conclusión, la densidad de siembra afecta inversamente el peso corporal y la sobrevivencia de las larvas en esta especie.

In order to evaluate the effects of larval density rearing on body weight and survival of larvae of striped catfish (Pseudoplatystoma sp), was designed and built a closed recirculation system, which allowed maintaining stable physical and chemical variables of water throughout the experimental period. For this purpose, vitelline larvae were rearing in three densities: 10 (T1), 50 (T2) and 100 (T3) larvae per liter and monitored until 20 days post-hatch. They were evaluated four replicates per treatment, kept under photoperiod 0:24 (light: dark) and fed to apparent satiety with Artemia saline hatchlings, which were supplied divided into five portions a day: at 07:00, 09: 00, 14:00, 18:00 and 22:00 hours. The water quality characteristics observed during the test were: dissolved oxygen 5.7 ± 0.5 mg/L; temperature 26 ± 0.8 ° C; pH 7.6 ± 0.2; hardness 38.2 ± 5.2 mgCaCO3/L; alkalinity 26.5 ± 5.2 mg CaCO3 / L; NH3 <0.02 mg/L; salinity 0.4 ± 0.1 g/L; conductivity 841.1 ± 38.1µS/ cm. At the end of the test, body weight varied inversely with rearing density: 103.0 ± 15.6; 76.1 ± 19.8 and 66.7 ± 9.3 mg, respectively, but no significant difference between the two highest densities P>0.05) were observed. Survival was higher in the density of 10 larvae/L, being statistically different between treatments (86.5 ± 1.9%, 54.7 ± 2.2% and 46.9 ± 3.1% for 10, 50 and 100 larvae/L, respectively, P<0.01). In conclusion, larval density inversely rearing affects body weight and survival of the larvae in this species.

A fim de avaliar os efeitos da densidade de estocagem sobre o peso corporal e a sobrevivência de larvas de Sorubim (Pseudoplatystoma sp), foi desenhado e construído um sistema de recirculação fechado, o que permitiu manter as variáveis físicas e químicas da água estáveis durante todo o período experimental. Para o efeito, larvas vitelinas foram semeadas no sistema em três densidades asim: 10 (T1), 50 (T2) e 100 (T3) larvas por litro e monitoradas até 20 dias pós-eclosão. Foram avaliados quatro repetições por tratamento, mantidas sob fotoperíodo 0:24 (luz: escuro) e alimentadas até saciedade aparente com nauplios de Artemia salina, que foram fornecidos divididos em cinco porções por dia: às 07:00, 09: 00, 14:00, 18:00 e 22:00 horas. As características de qualidade de água observada durante o ensaio foram: oxigénio dissolvido de 5,7 ± 0,5 mg/L; temperatura de 26 ± 0,8 ° C; pH 7,6 ± 0,2; dureza de 38,2 ± 5,2 mgCaCO3/L; alcalinidade de 26,5 ± 5,2 mg CaCO3 / l; NH3 <0,02 mg/L; salinidade de 0,4 ± 0,1 g/L; condutividade 841,1 ± 38.1 µS/cm. No final do teste, o peso corporal variou inversamente com a densidade de estocagem: 103,0 ± 15,6; 76,1 ± 19,8 e 66,7 ± 9,3 mg, respectivamente, mas não se observaram diferenças significativas entre as duas densidades mais altas P>0,05). A sobrevivência foi maior na densidade de 10 larvas/L, o que foi estatisticamente diferente entre os tratamentos (86,5 ± 1,9%, 54,7 ± 2,2% e 46,9 ± 3,1% para 10, 50 e 100 larvas/L, respectivamente, P<0,01). Em conclusão, a densidade de estocagem afeta inversamente o peso corporal e a sobrevivência das larvas nesta espécie.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi abordar o controle biológico clássico de pragas no Brasil, quanto aos procedimentos para importação e exportação de material biológico nativo. Será dada uma breve introdução sobre os aspectos legais do uso dos agentes biológicos, bem como feitas algumas considerações sobre as pragas quarentenárias existentes e as ações já realizadas no País. A segurança na introdução de organismos exóticos é importante para a defesa fitossanitária brasileira e para uma maior adoção do controle biológico clássico, tornando-o disponível para o manejo integrado de pragas (MIP). Aspectos legais e normativos estabelecem os procedimentos a serem adotados, não somente para proteger a bioprospecção e os organismos nativos, como, também, para minimizar os riscos ao patrimônio genético nacional associados à introdução de organismos exóticos. Além disso, os procedimentos para importação/exportação de organismos vegetais e úteis para o controle biológico de pragas e de outros materiais genéticos devem estar sujeitos a medidas fitossanitárias realizadas em estações quarentenárias e laboratórios de diagnósticos certificados. Por fim, as atividades de quarentena listadas aqui são estratégicas para o País, para o salvaguardarem de problemas potenciais advindos do trânsito fronteiriço de organismos vivos.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to address the classical biological control of pests in Brazil, regarding procedures to import and export native biological material. A brief introduction will be given on the current legal issues on the use of biocontrol agents, as well as some considerations on the existing quarantine pests and actions already carried out in the country. The safety in the introduction of exotic organisms is important for Brazilian phytosanitary defense and for a higher adoption of classical biocontrol, making it available for integrated pest management (IPM). Legal and normative aspects establish the procedures that must to be adopted, not only to protect bioprospecting and native organisms, but also to minimize risks to the national genetic patrimony associated with the introduction of exotic organisms. Furthermore, the import/export procedures adopted for vegetal and useful organisms for pest biological control and for other genetic material must be subjected to phytosanitary measures performed in government-certified quarantine facilities and diagnostic laboratories. Finally, the quarantine activities listed here are strategic for safeguarding the country from potential problems arising from border transit of living organisms.
