ABSTRACT Catfishes of the family Astroblepidae form a group composed by 82 valid species of the genus Astroblepus inhabiting high-gradient streams and rivers throughout tropical portions of the Andean Cordillera. Little has been advanced in the systematics and biodiversity of astroblepids other than an unpublished thesis, a single regional multilocus study and isolated species descriptions. Here, we examined 208 specimens of Astroblepus that apparently belong to 16 valid species from several piedmont rivers from northern Colombia to southern Peru. Using three single-locus approaches for species delimitation in combination with a species tree analysis estimated from three mitochondrial genes, we identified a total of 25 well-delimited lineages including eight valid and 17 potential undescribed species distributed in two monophyletic groups: the Central Andes Clade, which contains 14 lineages from piedmont rivers of the Peruvian Amazon, and the Northern Andes Clade with 11 lineages from trans- and cis-Andean rivers of Colombia and Ecuador, including the Orinoco, Amazon, and Magdalena-Cauca basins and Pacific coastal drainages. Results of species delimitation methods highlight several taxonomical incongruences in recently described species denoting potential synonymies.

RESUMEN Los bagres de la familia Astroblepidae son un grupo compuesto por 82 especies válidas del género Astroblepus que habitan quebradas y ríos de alto gradiente a través de la porcion tropical en la Cordillera de los Andes. Poco se ha avanzado en la sistemática y biodiversidad de los astroblepidos aparte de una tesis no publicada, un único estudio multilocus regional y descripciones aisladas de especies. Aquí, examinamos 208 especímenes de Astroblepus que aparentemente pertenecen a 16 especies válidas provenientes de ríos de pie de monte de la cordillera de los Andes, desde el norte de Colombia hasta el sur de Perú. Utilizando tres metodologías de delimitación de especies para un único locus en combinación con análisis de un árbol de especies a partir de tres genes mitocondriales, identificamos un total de 25 linajes bien definidos que incluyen ocho especies válidas y 17 potenciales especies no descritas distribuidas en dos grupos monofiléticos: un clado de los andes centrales, que contiene 14 especies de los ríos de pie de monte de la Amazonía peruana y un clado de los andes del norte con 11 especies de los ríos trans y cisandinos de Colombia y Ecuador, incluyendo las cuencas del Orinoco, Amazonas y Magdalena-Cauca así como drenajes costeros del Pacífico. Los resultados de los métodos de delimitación de especies destacan varias incongruencias taxonómicas en especies recientemente descritas que denotan posibles sinonimias.

RESUMO Uma nova espécie de Curimatopsis é descrita da porção oeste do Escudo das Guianas dos ríos Carapo e Paragua, tributários do río Caroni, bacia do Orinoco no sudeste da Venezuela. A nova espécie pertence ao clado Curimatopsis macrolepis por possuir uma maxila inferior longa que se projeta além da margem anterior da maxila superior e primeiro e segundo hipurais separados. A nova espécie é diagnosticada das demais espécies do clado Curimatopsis macrolepis por possuir uma mácula escura pequena, inconspícua na superfície lateral do pedúnculo caudal, por detalhes de pigmentação do corpo e nadadeiras, e por dados morfométricos adicionais. A distribuição geográfica de C. macrolepis nas bacias do rio Amazonas e río Orinoco é atualizada baseada na análise de espécimes depositados em museus.

ABSTRACT A new species of Curimatopsis is described from the highlands of the western Guiana Shield in the río Carapo and río Paragua, tributaries of the río Caroni in the Orinoco basin, southeastern Venezuela. The new species belongs to the Curimatopsis macrolepis clade due to its possession of a long lower jaw that projects past the anterior margin of the upper jaw, and separate first and second hypurals. The new species is diagnosed from remaining species of the Curimatopsis macrolepis clade by having a small-sized inconspicuous dark spot on the midlateral surface of the caudal peduncle, by details of body and fin pigmentation, and by additional morphometric characters. The distribution of C. macrolepis in the Amazon and Orinoco basins is updated based on the examination of museum specimens.

RESUMO Steindachnerina nigrotaenia é retirada da sinonímia de S. brevipinna e considerada uma espécie válida. A designação do lectótipo de S. nigrotaenia é considerada inválida e um novo lectótipo é aqui designado. Steindachnerina nigrotaenia e S. insculpta são redescritas com base no material tipo e em exemplares adicionais das bacias do rio Paraguai e alto rio Paraná, respectivamente. As duas espécies se diferenciam pelo número de escamas da linha lateral e da série transversal e por análises filogenéticas de dados moleculares.

ABSTRACT Steindachnerina nigrotaenia is resurrected from the synonym of S. brevipinna and considered a valid species. The previous designation of the lectotype of S. nigrotaenia is considered invalid and a new lectotype is designated herein. Steindachnerina nigrotaenia and S. insculpta are redescribed based on type specimens and on additional material from the rio Paraguai and the upper rio Paraná basins, respectively. The two species can be separated by the number of scales of the lateral line and of the transverse series and by phylogenetic analyses of molecular data.

RESUMO Uma espécie nova de Tetragonopterus é descrita de rios de terra baixa da Amazônia Central. Ela difere de suas congêneres por possuir uma mancha escura orientada verticalmente, limitada à porção posterior do pedúnculo caudal, e por possuir cinco dentes principais finos e afiados no dentário, além de outras características morfométricas e merísticas. Nós levantamos a hipótese que o novo táxon pertença ao clado Tetragonopterus anostomus, o qual inclui T. anostomus, T. denticulatus, T. kuluene e T. juruena.

ABSTRACT A new species of Tetragonopterus is described from lowland rivers of Central Amazon. It differs from congeners by having a vertically-oriented patch of dark pigmentation limited to posterior portion of the caudal peduncle and by bearing five thin and sharp teeth on dentary, along with other morphometric and meristic features. We hypothesize that the new taxon belongs to the herein named “Tetragonopterus anostomus clade” that includes T. anostomus, T. denticulatus, T. kuluene, and T. juruena.

RESUMO Protocheirodon, um gênero novo de Characidae é proposto para incluir uma espécie previamente alocada em Leptagoniates . Esta decisão é suportada por hipóteses filogenéticas moleculares e morfológicas que apontam Protocheirodon pi como grupo-irmão das demais tribos de Cheirodontinae, ao invés da alocação tradicional em Aphyocharacinae. A posição filogenética de Protocheirodon é reconhecida como uma tribo nova, Protocheirodontini. Protocheirodon pi , originalmente descrito com base em poucos exemplares de uma única localidade na bacia do rio Mamoré, no sudoeste da Amazônia, é redescrito com base em grandes séries de espécimes coletados em rios das porções centrais e ocidentais da bacia do rio Amazonas.

ABSTRACT Protocheirodon, a new genus of the Characidae, is proposed to include a species previously assigned to Leptagoniates . This action is supported by molecular and morphological phylogenetic hypotheses that place Protocheirodon pi as the sister group of the remaining tribes in the Cheirodontinae versus the traditional assignment of the species to the Aphyocharacinae. The phylogenetic position of Protocheirodon is recognized as a new tribe, the Protocheirodontini. Protocheirodon pi , originally described based on a small number of specimens from a single location in the río Mamoré basin in the southwestern Amazon, is redescribed on the basis of larger series of specimens from the western and central portions of the Amazon basin.

Uma espécie nova de Cyphocharax, Curimatidae, aparentemente endêmica das águas escuras do rio Negro, bacia amazônica no norte do Brasil, é descrita. A espécie nova é prontamente distinguida de suas congêneres pela presença de uma mancha escura distintamente alongada longitudinalmente e posteriormente expandida na vertical ao longo da superfície lateral do pedúnculo caudal, sendo estendida da base dos raios medianos da nadadeira caudal até a linha vertical do término da nadadeira adiposa. Adicionalmente, a espécie nova difere de todas as congêneres nos detalhes do corpo, pigmentação das nadadeiras e nas proporções merísticas e morfométricas. As evidências para alocação da espécie no gênero Cyphocharaxe a ocorrência de outras espécies de Curimatidae aparentemente endêmicas do alto rio Negro são discutidas.

A new species of Cyphocharax, Curimatidae, apparently endemic to the blackwater upper rio Negro of the Amazon basin in northern Brazil, is described.The new species is readily distinguished from its congeners by the presence of a distinctly longitudinally elongate, posteriorly vertically expanding patch of dark pigmentation along the midlateral surface of the caudal peduncle, with the patch extending from the base of the middle caudal-fin rays anteriorly past the vertical through the posterior terminus of the adipose fin. The new species additionally differs from all congeners in details of body and fin pigmentation and meristic and morphometric ratios. Evidence for the assignment of the species to Cyphocharax and the occurrence of other species of the Curimatidae apparently endemic to the upper rio Negro catchment is discussed.

A bacia do rio São Francisco contém muitas espécies endêmicas, tais como Prochilodus argenteus e P. costatus, os quais têm grande importância comercial. Entretanto, informações sobre as principais áreas de recrutamento e estudos genéticos contendo uma extensa amostragem dessas espécies no rio São Francisco são escassas. Para investigar o papel das lagoas marginais na manutenção da variabilidade genética e na estruturação populacional dessas espécies, nós analisamos seis locimicrossatélites em nove grupos amostrais de P. argenteuse cinco grupos amostrais de P. costatus. Nossos resultados revelaram altos níveis de variabilidade genética para ambas as espécies e valores baixos de diferenciação genética para P. argenteus (FST =0.008, P< 0.05) e P. costatus(FST =0.031, P< 0.05). Adicionalmente, valores altos de fluxo gênico combinados com a distância genética baixa sugerem a presença de uma única população para cada espécie no médio rio São Francisco. Possíveis rotas migratórias envolvendo lagoas marginais durante o período reprodutivo puderam ser detectadas, confirmando a importância das lagoas marginais no ciclo de vida dessas espécies. Nossos resultados também indicaram a necessidade de um manejo adequado dos recursos pesqueiros e a conservação das várzeas na bacia do rio São Francisco.

The rio São Francisco basin contains many endemic species, such as Prochilodus argenteus and P. costatus, which have great commercial importance. However, information about the main recruitment sites and genetic studies containing extensive sampling of these species are scarce. To investigate the roles of the marginal lagoons in the maintenance of genetic variability and in the population structure, we analyzed six microsatellite loci in nine sampling groups of P. argenteusand five sampling groups of P. costatus. Our results showed high levels of genetic variability and low values of genetic differentiation for P. argenteus (FST =0.008, P< 0.05) and for P. costatus(FST =0.031, P < 0.05). In addition, high values of gene flow combined with a small genetic distance suggest the presence of a single population for each species in the middle rio São Francisco basin. Moreover, putative migration routes involving marginal lagoons during the reproductive season could be detected, confirming the importance of these nurseries in the lifecycle of these species. Our results also indicate the necessity of adequate management of the fish resources and the conservation of the floodplains in the rio São Francisco basin.

Uma espécie nova de Tetragonopterus é descrita do rio Jari, um tributário da margem esquerda do rio Amazonas, na divisa entre os Estados do Amapá e Pará, norte do Brasil. Esta é morfologicamente diferenciada das outras espécies do gênero (T. argenteus, T. chalceus e T. rarus combinação nova) pelo formato losangular da mancha no pedúnculo caudal contra uma mancha arredondada a quadrangular nas demais espécies. Sequências parciais do gene mitocondrial citocromo oxidase C subunidade I de representantes de todas as espécies válidas de Tetragonopterus, incluindo esta espécie nova, foram analisadas. Os resultados obtidos revelaram uma significante distância genética entre esta espécie nova e as demais do gênero. É apresentada uma discussão sobre a nova combinação, Tetragonopterus rarus.

A new species of Tetragonopterus is described from the rio Jari, a tributary to the left margin of rio Amazonas, at the border between Amapá and Pará States, northern Brazil. It is morphologically diagnosed from the other species of the genus (T. argenteus, T. chalceus, and T. rarus new combination) by the lozenge-shaped spot on the caudal peduncle vs. rounded to square spot on the other species. Partial sequences of the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome Oxidase C subunit I, from representatives of all valid species of Tetragonopterus, including this new species, were analyzed. The obtained results revealed a significant genetic distance between the new species and its congeners. A discussion on the new combination, Tetragonopterus rarus, is also provided.
