Abstract Musculoskeletal symptoms (MS) can derive from injuries or dysfunctions that affect biological tissues such as muscles, bones, and nerves, among others. Military Firefighters (MF) exercise their activities exposed to varied and complex biological conditions, in which the physical demands are intense. Shift work is another remarkable characteristic of the career, which is associated with sleep disorders. Our objective was to estimate the association between the risk of chronification of MS and sleep quality in MF with MS. Our study is a Cross-Sectional Observational Study, whose sample was composed of 753 BM from the Federal District. The analysis was performed with a Sample Characterization Questionnaire, Örebro Musculoskeletal Symptoms Screening Questionnaire (OMPSQ) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), answered remotely. Statistical analysis used the Spearman Correlation test, p<0.05. The correlation between OMPSQ and PSQI was rated moderate, demonstrating that sleep quality has an influence on the chronification process. The average of the evaluation of Sleep Quality through the PSQI is 8.79, indicating that military personnel present a deficient quality of sleep. There was a correlation between the PSQI score and the OMPSQ of 0.542 (p<0.001), a moderate correlation between the variables. We conclude that MF show correlation between SM and sleep quality, indicating a moderate relationship between the variables, where sleep quality explains 25% of SM. We found that most MF were classified as Low Risk for chronification of SM.

Resumo Os sintomas musculoesqueléticos (SM) podem derivar de lesões ou disfunções que afetam tecidos biológicos como músculos, ossos, nervos, entre outros. Os Bombeiros Militares (BM) exercem suas atividades expostos a condições biológicas variadas e complexas, nas quais as demandas físicas são intensas. O trabalho em turno é outra característica marcante na carreira, o qual está associado a distúrbios do sono. Nosso objetivo foi estimar a associação entre o risco de cronificação de SM e a qualidade do sono em BM com SM. Nosso estudo é um Estudo Observacional Transversal, cuja amostra foi composta por 753 BM do Distrito Federal. A análise foi realizada com um Questionário de Caracterização Amostral, Questionário Örebro de Triagem de Sintomas Musculoesqueléticos (OMPSQ) e com o Índice de Qualidade do Sono de Pittsburgh (PSQI), respondidos remotamente. A análise estatística utilizou o teste de Correlação Spearman, p<0,05. A correlação entre OMPSQ e PSQI foi classificada em moderada, demonstrando que a qualidade do sono apresenta influência no processo de cronificação. A média da avaliação da Qualidade do Sono através do PSQI é de 8,79, indicando que militares apresentam uma qualidade do sono deficitária. Houve correlação entre a pontuação no PSQI e o OMPSQ de 0,542 (p<0.001), correlação moderada entre as variáveis. Concluímos que os BM apresentam correlação entre os SM e a qualidade do sono, indicando uma relação moderada entre as variáveis, onde a qualidade de sono explica 25% dos SM. Verificamos que a maioria dos BM foram classificados como Baixo Risco de cronificação de SM.

RESUMO Máquinas e pesos livres são comumente usados para aumentar a força muscular e o desempenho. No entanto, o uso de dispositivos elásticos necessita de investigações científicas quanto à sua concordância com os métodos padrão-ouro de força muscular. Objetivo: Verificar a concordância do teste de 10-RM entre a musculação e a resistência elástica em exercícios de membros superiores e inferiores, e a confiabilidade intra-dispositivo, concordância e alterações mínimas detectáveis do teste de 10-RM. Métodos: Vinte e três adultos saudáveis e não treinados, de ambos os sexos (idade 22,43 ± 2,55), realizaram o teste de supino reto de 10-RM e extensão de joelho com aparelhos de musculação e tubos elásticos, de forma aleatória. Resultados: A comparação do teste de 10-RM entre os instrumentos, pela utilização do índice ICC, demonstrou confiabilidade muito alta e alta para membros inferiores (ICC = 0,87) e superiores (ICC = 0,80), respectivamente. A análise de concordância de Bland Altman mostrou que o teste de 10-RM usando resistência elástica produziu cargas menores (Kgf) na extensão do joelho (34,16 ± 6,81 [elástico]; 36,22 ± 9,45 [máquina]; diferença média = 2,05 kgf ± 5,32) e cargas maiores (Kgf) no supino vertical (31,61 ± 7,81 [elástico]; 24,96 ± 10,11 [máquina]; Diferença média = 6,65 kgf ± 4,93) quando comparado aos aparelhos de musculação. A confiabilidade intra-dispositivo também demonstrou um índice ICC muito alto para membros superiores e inferiores em ambos os dispositivos. Conclusão: A utilização de 10-RM com resistência elástica apresenta alta confiabilidade e concordância quando comparada a aparelhos de musculação para exercícios de supino horizontal ou extensão de joelhos.

ABSTRACT Machines and free weights are commonly used to increase muscle strength and performance. However, the use of elastic devices needs scientific investigations regarding its agreement against gold standards methods muscle strength. Aim: To determine the agreement of the 10-RM test between weight machine and elastic resistance in upper and lower limb exercises, and the intra-device reliability, agreement, and minimal detectable changes of the 10-RM test. Methods: Twenty-three healthy and untrained adults, of both sexes (age 22.43 ± 2.55), performed the 10-RM bench press and knee extension test with weight machines and elastic tubes, randomly. Results: The comparison of the 10-RM test between instruments, by the use of ICC index, demonstrated very high and high reliability for lower (ICC = 0.87) and upper (ICC = 0.80) limbs, respectively. The Bland Altman agreement analysis showed that the 10-RM test using elastic resistance produced lower loads (Kgf) on knee extension (34.16 ± 6.81 [elastic]; 36.22 ± 9.45 [machine]; Mean difference = 2.05 kgf ± 5.32) and higher loads (Kgf) on the vertical bench press (31.61 ± 7.81 [elastic]; 24.96 ± 10.11 [machine]; Mean difference = 6.65 kgf ± 4.93) when compared to the weight machines. Intra-device reliability also demonstrated a very high ICC index for upper and lower limbs on both devices. Conclusion: The use of 10-RM with elastic resistance presents high reliability and agreement when compared to weight machines for bench press or knee extension exercises.

ABSTRACT The muscular performance of the lumbar spine is frequently assessed in studies that compare populations with and without low back pain. However, the gold standard equipment used to evaluate the strength of these muscles has a high cost. Therefore, rarely used in the clinical practice of health professionals, being the handheld dynamometer an accessible alternative for use in clinical practice. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the reliability of the handheld dynamometer in the measurement of maximum voluntary isometric contraction of trunk extensors in healthy adults. Twenty-six healthy adults of both sexes (21.53± 1.88 years old) performed the test and retest with a 1-week interval. The comparison between test-retest demonstrated high and very high intraclass correlation coefficient for peak strength (0.82; 0.60 to 0.92) and mean strength (0.90; 0.76 to 0.95), respectively. Also, the Bland-Altman analyses indicate an error of 5.10 kg for peak strength and 5.7 kg for mean strength. In addition, the minimum detectable change for peak strength was 6.03kg (16.18%) and 5.92 kg for mean strength (20.95%). In conclusion, the test presents high reliability for the extensor muscles of the trunk in healthy adults. Therefore, the use of the handheld dynamometer can be indicated for clinical practice.

Resumo Introdução: Vários testes são capazes de predizer as cargas máximas de um indivíduo por meio de cargas submáximas, e isto tem sido muito utilizado no treinamento resistido e na prática clínica da reabilitação, porém, a confiabilidade desses testes não está bem documentada. Objetivo: Analisar a confiabilidade relativa e absoluta do teste de 10 Repetições Máximas (10RM) no supino vertical e cadeira extensora. Método: Participaram 23 jovens saudáveis, destreinados e sedentários. As avaliações teste e re-teste foram realizadas no supino vertical e na cadeira extensora. O re-teste ocorreu após 7, 14 ou 21 dias do teste. Resultados: O Coeficiente de Correlação Intra-classe (CCI) foi classificado como muito alto, sendo 0,99 para membros superiores e 0,98 para inferiores. Os resultados da Mínima Mudança Detectável (MMD) para Supino Vertical resultaram em um total 2,77 gf de mudança real entre teste e re-teste, com uma MMD% de 11,46%. Para Cadeira Extensora, encontramos 3,15 K\kgf com MMD% de 8,94%. Em ambos os exercícios obtivemos uma MMD% abaixo de 30%, portanto, aceitável. Conclusão: O teste de 10RM nas máquinas de supino vertical e cadeira extensora têm uma confiabilidade relativa muito alta e uma mínima mudança detectável aceitável para jovens adultos, destreinados e sedentários.

Abstract Introduction: Several tests can predict the maximum weight an individual can lift using submaximal weights, which has been widely used in resistance training and clinical rehabilitation, but the reliability of these tests is not well documented. Objective: To analyze the test relative and absolute reliability of 10 maximum repetitions in the supine vertical bench press and leg extension machines. Method: Twenty-three healthy, untrained, and sedentary adults participated in the study. The test and retest evaluations were performed on the supine vertical press and leg extension machines. The retest was performed seven, 14 or 21 days after the test. Results: Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was classified as very high (0.99) for upper limbs and (0.98) for lower limbs. The results for minimum detectable change (MDC) for the bench press resulted in a total of 2.77 kgf of actual change between test and retest, with an MDC% of 11.46%. For the leg extension, we found 3.15 kgf with MDC% of 8.94%. In both exercises, we obtained an MDC% below 30%, therefore acceptable. Conclusion: The 10RM test with the supine vertical press and leg extension has a very high relative reliability and an MDC acceptable for young, untrained and sedentary adults.

Resumen Introducción: Varias pruebas son capaces de predecir las cargas máximas de un individuo mediante cargas submáximas, y esto ha sido muy utilizado en el entrenamiento resistido y en la práctica clínica de la rehabilitación; sin embargo, la confiabilidad de estas pruebas no está bien documentada. Objetivo: Analizar la confiabilidad relativa y absoluta de la prueba de 10 repeticiones máximas (10RM) en el supino vertical y silla extensora. Método: Participaron 23 jóvenes sanos, sin entrenar y sedentarios. Las evaluaciones de la prueba y re-prueba se realizaron en el supino vertical y en la silla extensora. La re-prueba ocurrió después de 7, 14 o 21 días de la prueba. Resultados: El Coeficiente de Correlación Intraclase (CCI) se clasificó como muy alto, siendo 0,99 para miembros superiores y 0,98 para miembros inferiores. Los resultados del Mínimo Cambio Detectable (MMD) para Supino Vertical resultaron en un total de 2,77 kgf de cambio real entre prueba y re-prueba, con un MMD% del 11,46%. Para Silla Extensora, encontramos 3,15 kgf con MMD% del 8,94%. En ambos ejercicios obtuvimos un MMD% por debajo del 30%, por lo tanto, aceptable. Conclusión: La prueba de 10RM en las máquinas de supino vertical y silla extensora tiene una confiabilidad relativa muy alta y un mínimo cambio detectable aceptable para jóvenes adultos, sin entrenar y sedentarios.

It was our objective to compare the neuromuscular efficiency (NME) adaptations between resistance exercise methods (with and without pre-activation of the antagonist’s muscles) after six-weeks training. This randomized controlled trial assigned forty-nine men (mean age 20.9 ± 2.2 years; height 1.80 ± 0.1 m; body mass 75.0 ± 8.2 kg) into two groups: 1) Reciprocal Training group (RT, concentric knee flexion immediately followed by concentric knee extension at 60°.s-1); and Conventional Training (CT, concentric knee extension exercise). Both training adopted three sets, 10 repetitions at 60°.s-1, 2 days/week for 6 weeks. NME of knee extension and flexion were assessed pre and post-training. The groups were similar at baseline, for all variables. We found significant effects on NME only for the rectus femoris muscle in the RT group (ES = 0.31; 95%CI [0.30-0,92]; p<0.01). There were no significant differences at NME pre- and post-training in CT and Total Work did not differ between groups. Reciprocal training provided better neuromuscular efficiency, but effects were limited to the rectus femoris muscle. The small effect sizes suggest caution in the results.

Resumo Introdução: Fratura é uma lesão traumática sofrida pelo osso que pode ocorrer por causas diversas. Embora as repercussões das fraturas sobre o sistema musculoesquelético sejam documentadas, estudos com medidas desfecho mais abrangentes e em fases mais tardias da lesão ainda são escassos. Objetivo: Avaliar as adaptações estruturais e físico-funcionais em indivíduos que sofreram fratura unilateral de membro inferior tratadas cirurgicamente. Métodos: Participaram do estudo 32 pacientes de ambos os sexos, com idade entre 18 e 59 anos, com diagnóstico de fratura unilateral de membro inferior e alta hospitalar de no mínimo 1 ano. O membro inferior acometido foi comparado ao membro inferior saudável de todos os participantes utilizando as medidas de desfecho: espessura muscular do vasto lateral (ultrassonografia), força de extensão e flexão do joelho (dinamômetro isocinético), amplitude de movimento de dorsiflexão do tornozelo (teste da distância do pé à parede) e aptidão funcional do membro inferior (teste de salto horizontal simples e triplo). Resultados: Foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os membros acometidos e não acometidos nas medidas de espessura muscular (p = 0,0001), força de extensão do joelho (p = 0,0094), amplitude de dorsiflexão (p = 0,0004) e desempenho funcional (p = 0,0094, salto simples e p = 0,0114, salto triplo). Em todos os desfechos significativos os valores do membro acometido foram menores que o do membro não acometido. O pico de torque dos músculos flexores do joelho não demonstrou diferença estatisticamente significante entre membros (p = 0,0624). Conclusão: Indivíduos que sofreram fratura unilateral de membro inferior tratado cirurgicamente apresentam alterações estruturais e físico-funcionais tardias importantes em relação ao membro não acometido.

Abstract Introduction: A fracture is a traumatic bone injury that can occur from a variety of causes. Although the repercussions of fractures on the musculoskeletal system are documented, studies with more comprehensive outcomes and later stages of injury are still scarce. Objective: To evaluate the structural and physical-functional adaptations in individuals who suffered unilateral lower limb fractures treated surgically. Methods: Thirty-two patients of both genders, aged between 18 and 59 years, with a diagnosis of unilateral fracture of the lower limb and hospital discharge of at least one year, participated in the study. The affected lower limb was compared to the healthy lower limb of all participants using the outcome measures: vastus lateral muscle thickness (ultrasonography), knee extension and flexion strength (isokinetic dynamometer), ankle dorsiflexion range of motion of the distance from the foot to the wall) and functional fitness of the lower limb (single and triple horizontal jump test). Results: Statistically significant differences were found between the limbs affected and not affected in the measurements of muscle thickness (p = 0.0001), knee extension force (p = 0.0094), dorsiflexion amplitude (p = 0.0004) and functional performance (p = 0.0094, single jump and = 0.0114, triple jump). In all significant outcomes, the values of the affected limb were smaller than that of the non-affected limb. The peak torque of the knee flexor muscles did not show a statistically significant difference between limbs (p = 0.0624). Conclusion: Individuals who have undergone a surgically treated unilateral fracture of the lower limb present important structural and physical-functional late changes in relation to the non-affected limb.

Resumen Introducción: La fractura es una lesión traumática sufrida en el hueso que puede ocurrir por diversas causas. Aunque las repercusiones de las fracturas en el sistema músculoesquelético estén documentadas, aún son escasos los estudios con un desenlace más amplio y en fases tardias de la lesión. Objetivo: Evaluar las adaptaciones estructurales y físico-funcionales en individuos que sufrieron fractura unilateral del miembro inferior tratados quirúrgicamente. Métodos: Participaron del estudio 32 pacientes de ambos sexos, con edad entre 18 y 59 años, diagnosticados con fractura unilateral del miembro inferior y alta hospitalar de por lo menos un año. El miembro inferior dañado fue comparado al miembro inferior saludable de todos los participantes utilizando las siguientes medidas: espesura muscular del vasto lateral (ultrassonografia), fuerza de extensión y flexión de la rodilla (dinamómetro isocinético), amplitud de movimiento de dorsiflexión del tobillo (test de la distancia del pie a la pared) y aptitud funcional del miembro inferior (test de salto horizontal simple y triple). Resultados: Fueron encontradas diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los miembros dañados y los sanos en las medidas de espesura muscular (p = 0,0001), fuerza de extensión de la rodilla (p = 0,0094), amplitud de dorsiflexión (p = 0,0004) y desempeño funcional (p = 0,0094, salto simple y p = 0,0114, salto triple). En todas las conclusiones significativas los valores del miembro dañado fueron menores que en las del miembro sano. El pico de torsión de los músculos flexores de la rodilla no demostró diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre ambos miembros (p = 0,0624). Conclusión: los individuos que sufrieron fractura unilateral del miembro inferior tratado quirúrgicamente presentan alteraciones estructurales y físico-funcionales importantes en relación con el miembro sano.

Resumo Objetivo: Determinar a prevalência de lombalgia crônica (LBC) e os preditores de força muscular nas costas (FMC) em pacientes com lúpus eritematoso sistêmico (LES). Métodos: Estudo transversal. Selecionaram-se 96 pacientes ambulatoriais com LES por amostragem não probabilística, entrevistados e testados durante consultas médicas. As medidas de desfecho foram: prevalência ocasional de LBC, Índice de Incapacidade de Oswestry, Escala Tampa para Cinesiofobia, Escala de Gravidade da Fadiga e contrações isométricas voluntárias máximas (CIVM) de preensão manual e dos músculos das costas. Usaram-se o coeficiente de correlação e a regressão linear múltipla na análise estatística. Resultados: Dos 96 indivíduos entrevistados, 25 apresentavam LBC, o que indicou uma prevalência circunstancial de 26% (92% mulheres). A correlação entre o Índice de Incapacidade de Oswestry e a contração isométrica voluntária máxima dos músculos das costas foi de r = -0,4, IC 95% [-0,68; -0,01] e entre a CIVM de preensão manual e dos músculos das costas foi de r = 0,72, IC 95% [0,51; 0,88]. O modelo de regressão apresentou o maior valor de R2 observado quando a CIVM dos músculos das costas foi testada com cinco variáveis independentes (63%). Nesse modelo, a força de preensão manual foi a única variável preditiva (ß = 0,61, p = 0,001). Conclusões: A prevalência de LBC em indivíduos com LES foi de 26%. A CIVM dos músculos das costas foi 63% prevista por cinco variáveis de interesse. No entanto, apenas a força de preensão manual foi uma variável preditiva estatisticamente significativa. A CIVM dos músculos das costas apresentou uma relação linear diretamente proporcional à força de preensão manual e inversamente proporcional ao Índice de Incapacidade de Oswestry (ou seja, músculos das costas mais fortes estão associados a menores pontuações de incapacidade).

Abstract Objective: To determine the prevalence of Chronic Low Back Pain and predictors of Back Muscle Strength in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Ninety-six ambulatory patients with lupus were selected by non-probability sampling and interviewed and tested during medical consultation. The outcomes measurements were: Point prevalence of chronic low back pain, Oswestry Disability Index, Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, Fatigue Severity Scale and maximal voluntary isometric contractions of handgrip and of the back muscles. Correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression were used in statistical analysis. Results: Of the 96 individuals interviewed, 25 had chronic low back pain, indicating a point prevalence of 26% (92% women). The correlation between the Oswestry Index and maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the back muscles was r = −0.4, 95% CI [−0.68; −0.01] and between the maximal voluntary isometric contraction of handgrip and of the back muscles was r = 0.72, 95% CI [0.51; 0.88]. The regression model presented the highest value of R 2 being observed when maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the back muscles was tested with five independent variables (63%). In this model handgrip strength was the only predictive variable (β = 0.61, p = 0.001). Conclusions: The prevalence of chronic low back pain in individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus was 26%. The maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the back muscles was 63% predicted by five variables of interest, however, only the handgrip strength was a statistically significant predictive variable. The maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the back muscles presented a linear relation directly proportional to handgrip and inversely proportional to Oswestry Index i.e. stronger back muscles are associated with lower disability scores.

Resumo Objetivo: Avaliar a prevalência de fadiga em uma coorte brasileira de pacientes com artrite reumatoide em fase inicial com múltiplos instrumentos e os preditores desses instrumentos de acordo com diferentes variáveis independentes. Métodos: Estudo transversal com entrevista direta e revisão de prontuários. A fadiga, a variável dependente, foi avaliada por meio de oito instrumentos: Profile of Mood States (POMS), Multidimensional Assessment of Fatigue Scale (MAF), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Bristol Rheumatoid Arthritis Fatigue Multidimensional Questionnaire (BRAF-MDQ), Numerical Rating Scales (BRAF-NRS), Short-form Survey 36 (SF-36), Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Fatigue Scale (Facit-F) e Escala Visual Analógica de fadiga (VASf). Variáveis independentes: mensuraram-se dados sociodemográficos, clínicos e sorológicos por meio da análise de prontuários e entrevista direta. A incapacidade e a atividade da doença foram avaliadas com o Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ). A atividade da doença foi avaliada com o Disease Activity Score 28 joints (DAS-28). As pontuações das escalas mostraram o nível de fadiga e usou-se o método de regressão linear múltipla na análise estatística para demonstrar os modelos de predição. Resultados: Avaliaram-se 80 pacientes; 57 relataram fadiga clinicamente relevante (VASf > 2), representaram uma prevalência de 71,25% (51 mulheres [89,5%], média de 48,35 ± 15 anos e duração média da doença de 4,92 ± 3,8 anos). Oito modelos preditivos mostraram significância estatística, um para cada instrumento de fadiga. O maior coeficiente de determinação (R2) foi de 56% para o SF-36 e o menor (R2 = 21%) foi para a FSS. O HAQ foi a única variável independente que predisse a fadiga em todos os instrumentos. Conclusão: A fadiga clinicamente relevante é um sintoma altamente prevalente e é principalmente predita pela incapacidade e idade na população avaliada.

Abstract Objective: To assess the prevalence of fatigue in a Brazilian population with early rheumatoid arthritis using multiple instruments, and the predictors of these instruments by differents independent variables. Methods: Cross-sectional study with direct interview and medical records review. Fatigue, dependent variable, was assessed using eight instruments: Profile of Mood States (POMS), Multidimensional Assessment of Fatigue scale (MAF), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Bristol Rheumatoid Arthritis Fatigue Multidimensional Questionnaire (BRAF-MDQ), Numerical Rating Scales (BRAF-NRS), Short-form Survey 36 (SF-36), Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Fatigue Scale (FACIT-F) and Visual Analogic Scale for Fatigue (VASf). Independent variables: sociodemographic, clinical and serological, were measured using medical records and direct interview. Disability and disease activity were assessed using the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and disease activity assessed using the Disease Activity Score 28 joints (DAS28). The scores of scales demonstrated the level of fatigue and multiple linear regression method used in statistical analysis to demonstrate prediction models. Results: A total of 80 patients was assessed, and 57 reported clinically relevant fatigue (VASf > 2), representing 71.25% prevalence point (51 women [89.5%], mean age 48.35 ± 15 years, and mean disease duration of 4.92 ± 3.8 years). Eight predictive models showed statistical significance, one for each fatigue instrument. The highest coefficient of determination (R 2) was 56% for SF-36 and the lowest (R 2 = 21%) for FSS. The HAQ was the only independent variable to predict fatigue on all instruments. Conclusion: Clinically relevant fatigue is a highly prevalent symptom and is mostly predicted by disability and age in the population assessed.

Resumo Introdução: Com o envelhecimento, existe uma relação estreita entre deficit visuais, desequilíbrios e quedas, sendo a cirurgia ocular uma alternativa eficiente para idosos. Objetivo: Avaliar a influência das condições visuais em pacientes com catarata senil em relação aos desequilíbrios corporais. Método: Estudo descritivo e analítico realizado por meio de pesquisa quantitativa de coorte longitudinal. Participaram do estudo 30 idosos, 15 homens e 15 mulheres, os quais foram avaliados antes da cirurgia de catarata, 30 e 60 dias após a intervenção. Utilizou-se para a coleta de dados, o Miniexame do Estado Mental (MEEM), a Escala de Equilíbrio de Berg (EEB), o Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), a Escala Internacional de Eficácia de Quedas adaptada ao Brasil (FES-I-Brasil) e questionário de anamnese. A análise estatística empregou o teste Qui-quadrado, teste t Student e teste Mann-Whitney. Foram considerados significantes valores de p<0,05. Resultados: Das 15 idosas, pelo SPPB, em 60 dias de pós-operatório, 13 (87%) conseguiram desempenho moderado e duas (13%) mantiveram baixo desempenho de membros inferiores (MMII). Pelo teste FES-I-Brasil, em 60 dias pós-cirúrgico, três (20%) idosas mantiveram leve preocupação com as quedas. Dos 15 idosos avaliados pela EEB, antes e após 30 e 60 dias de cirurgia, um (7%) conseguiu manter algum equilíbrio, mas necessitando assistência; e 14 (93%) idosos mantiveram bom equilíbrio. Pelo teste SPPB, após 60 dias de cirurgia, cinco idosos (33%) tiveram desempenho moderado e nove (67%) obtiveram bom resultado. Conclusão: A cirurgia de catarata senil possibilitou melhora no desempenho funcional de MMII, no equilíbrio e medo de quedas nos idosos investigados prevenindo caimentos e fraturas, comuns no envelhecimento.

Abstract Introduction: During aging there is a close relationship between visual deficits, imbalance and falls, and eye surgery can be an efficient treatment option for elderly persons. Objective: Evaluate the influence of visual conditions on patients suffering from senile cataract with increasing imbalance. Method: A descriptive and analytical study using a quantitative longitudinal cohort technique was conducted. The study included 30 individuals who were evaluated before and 30 and 60 days after surgery. The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), International Falls Efficacy Scale adapted for Brazil (FES-I) and a medical history questionnaire were used to collect data. Statistical analysis involved the Chi-squared, Student's t and Mann-Whitney tests. Values of p<0.05 were considered significant. Results: The SPPB found that of 15 elderly women, 13 (87%) achieved moderate performance of the lower limbs while the performance of two (13%) remained poor, after 60 postoperative days. The FES-I revealed that three (20%) elderly persons were mildly worried about falls 60 days post-surgery. Of the 15 elderly male subjects evaluated by BBS, before and at 30 and 60 days after surgery, one (7%), managed to maintain some balance but needed assistance; while 14 (93%) maintained good balance. The SPPB found that the performance of five elderly persons (33%) was moderate and that of nine (67%) was good. Conclusion: Senile cataract surgery had positive preventative effects on lower limb performance, balance and fear of falling among the elderly studied, preventing the falls and fractures that are common during aging.
