ABSTRACT Body weight and vertical stratum utilization are important functional characteristics of species. Several studies have explored the capture success of different traps. These studies, however, did not explore how trappability is influenced by body weight. Here, we investigated the relationship between the weight of marsupial species caught in traps with trap type (wire cage and Sherman) and trap placement (ground and understory). For this we used data from Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1840 (n = 127; 75-958 g) and Gracilinanus agilis (Burmeister, 1854) (n = 327; 8.5-46 g) captured in semideciduous forest fragments in central Brazil. The results show that heaviest individuals of D. albiventris (391.01 ± 197.57 g) were captured more often by wire cage traps, regardless of trap placement. In contrast, G. agilis was trapped at similar rates regardless of weight, trap type or trap placement. We conclude that wire cage traps are more efficient at catching large marsupials weighing more than 300 g on average. Furthermore, the size of the individuals captured is not influenced by where the trap is placed (ground or understory). These findings contribute to a better understanding of the natural history and trappability of Neotropical marsupials.

Resumo: O estado de Goiás, no Brasil central, é coberto principalmente pelo domínio do Cerrado, com a Mata Atlântica do Alto Paraná ocupando sua porção centro-sul. Goiás é uma das 20 unidades federativas brasileiras que ainda não possui uma lista de espécies de mamíferos. Neste estudo, apresentamos a primeira lista de mamíferos para o estado. Registramos as espécies de mamíferos com base principalmente na análise de espécimes depositados em coleções científicas, bem como na literatura apresentando material testemunho associado. Listamos 191 espécies pertencentes a 125 gêneros, 31 famílias e 10 ordens, as quais representam 25,2% das espécies de mamíferos que ocorrem no Brasil. As ordens mais especiosas foram Chiroptera (90 spp.), seguida pelas ordens Rodentia (43 spp.), Carnivora (19 spp.) e Didelphimorphia (17 spp.), com as demais ordens respondendo por uma porção menor da diversidade: Cetartiodactyla (7 spp.), Cingulata (7 spp.), Primates (4 spp.), Pilosa (2 spp.), Lagomorpha (1 sp.) e Perissodactyla (1 sp.). Um total de 28 espécies (14,7%), principalmente representadas por mamíferos de médio e grande porte, estão ameaçadas nacionalmente e 12 (6,3%) encontram-se globalmente ameaçadas. Nossos resultados indicaram grandes porções do estado ainda não devidamente pesquisadas em relação aos seus mamíferos, com informações escassas e fragmentadas, principalmente no que diz respeito à sua porção noroeste. Discutimos a riqueza de espécies, a distribuição e o estado de conservação dos mamíferos do estado de Goiás nos cenários nacional e regional. Ressaltamos a importância da realização de inventários que utilizem técnicas complementares de amostragem, incluindo a coleta de material testemunho, proporcionando a obtenção de dados cariotípicos, moleculares, morfológicos, parasitológicos e ecológicos. Estas informações são a base de estudos integrativos, os quais aumentam nossa compreensão a respeito da riqueza e diversidade atual dos mamíferos. O conhecimento a respeito da distribuição da riqueza de espécies em Goiás é essencial para embasar estratégias de conservação, tão necessárias em áreas que vem sofrendo com a perda e fragmentação de seus hábitats naturais, como a porção centro-sul do estado.

Abstract: The state of Goiás, in central Brazil, is covered mainly by the Cerrado domain, with the Alto Paraná Atlantic Forest occupying its central-southern portion. Goiás is one of the 20 Brazilian federative units without a mammal checklist. In this study, we provide the first checklist of mammals from Goiás state. We recorded mammal species based primarily on the analysis of specimens housed in scientific collections as well as on literature with associated voucher material. We listed 191 mammalian species belonging to 125 genera, 31 families and 10 orders, which represents 25.2% of the mammal species occurring in Brazil. The most speciose orders were Chiroptera (90 spp.), followed by Rodentia (43 spp.), Carnivora (19 spp.) and Didelphimorphia (17 spp.). The following orders accounted for a smaller portion of the state diversity: Cetartiodactyla (7 spp.), Cingulata (7 spp.), Primates (4 spp.), Pilosa (2 spp.), Lagomorpha (1 sp.), and Perissodactyla (1 sp.). A total of 28 species (14.7%), mainly represented by medium and large-sized mammals, are nationally threatened while 12 (6.3%) are globally threatened. Our results indicate great portions of the state lacking a proper survey of mammals, especially the northwestern portion. We discuss species richness, distribution and conservation status of the mammals of Goiás state in national and regional scenarios. We highlight the need for mammal inventories based on complementary survey techniques with the collection of vouchers in order to provide karyologic, molecular, morphologic, parasitologic, and ecological data. These informations are the basis for integrative studies that lead to the understanding of current mammalian richness and diversity. Indeed, knowledge on species richness distribution in the state will guide conservation strategies, especially in areas undergoing habitat loss and fragmentation, such as the central-southern portion of Goiás.

Apesar da ampla distribuição do tatu-canastra Priodontes maximus, esta espécie apresenta baixas densidades em populações não conectadas. Aqui, relatamos 12 novos registros, incluindo cinco atropelamentos rodoviários de P. maximus em diferentes pontos de Cerrado e um em fragmento de Floresta Atlântica no centro-oeste do Brasil. Além dos registros relevantes, discutimos o efeito negativo da perda de espécimes por atropelamentos em estradas, o qual é um problema sério para a conservação e manutenção de populações locais de tatu-canastra.

Despite the widespread distribution of the giant armadillo Priodontes maximus, this species is found at low densities, often in disrupted populations. Here we report 12 new records, including five incidents of roadkill of P. maximus in different points of the Cerrado and one in an Atlantic Forest fragment in central-western Brazil. In addition to the relevant records, we discuss the negative effects of roadkills, which is a serious issue for the conservation and maintenance of local populations of giant armadillo.

Neste estudo, nós avaliamos o efeito dos atributos da mancha sobre a riqueza de mamíferos de médio e grande porte em manchas de floresta semidecidual no sul do estado de Goiás, Brasil. Quatorze manchas (de 35 a 869 ha) foram estudados durante janeiro a dezembro de 2015. Mamíferos de médio e grande porte foão inventariados por meio de observações diretas, pegadas, fezes e tocas. Em cada mancha de floresta semidecidual foi mensurada a área total e área núcleo (em hectare), grau de isolamento (em metros) e conectividade (manchas conectadas a mata ripária versus manchas isoladas). Vinte e duas espécies de mamíferos de médio e grande porte foram registradas. A riqueza de espécies esteve positivamente correlacionada com a área núcleo do fragmento. O tamanho da área teve uma influência significativa sobre a riqueza de espécies, mostrando que esse atributo é importante para manter a estrutura da comunidade. Portanto, a paisagem fragmentada do sul de Goiás abriga uma rica e ameaçada fauna de mamíferos de médio e grande porte.

We evaluated the effect of patch attributes on the richness of medium- and large-sized mammals in semi-deciduous forest patches in the southern of Goiás state, Brazil. We surveyed 14 semi-deciduous forest patches (35 to 869 ha) from January to December 2015. Medium- and large-sized mammal were sampled through direct observation, tracks, feces and burrows. In each semi-deciduous forest patch, we measured total area and core area (in hectare), degree of isolation (in meters) and connectivity (patches connected to riparian forest versus isolated patches). We recorded 22 species of medium- and large-sized mammals. Species richness was positively related to the core area of the patches. Patch size had a significant influence on species richness showing that this attribute is important to maintain community structure. Therefore, the fragmented landscape of southern Goiás still harbors a rich fauna of medium- and large-sized mammals.

Resumo Atualizamos a lista de mamíferos do estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil com base em registros primários. Cento e sessenta e seis espécies são listadas como ocorrentes no estado, sendo 47 de mamíferos de médio e grande porte, 46 de pequenos mamíferos e 73 de morcegos. As espécies listadas estão distribuídas em 31 famílias: Didelphidae (17 spp.), Dasypodidae (7 spp.), Myrmecophagidae (2 spp.), Cebidae (1 sp.), Callithrichidae (2 spp.), Aotidae (1 sp.), Pitheciidae (1 sp.), Atelidae (1 sp.), Leporidae (1 sp.), Felidae (7 spp.), Canidae (4 spp.), Mustelidae (5 spp.), Mephitidae (2 sp.), Procyonidae (2 spp.), Tapiridae (1 sp.), Tayassuidae (2 spp.), Cervidae (4 spp.), Sciuridae (1 sp.), Cricetidae (22 spp.), Erethizontidae (1 sp.), Caviidae (3 spp.), Dasyproctidae (1 sp.), Cuniculidae (1 sp.), Echimyidae (4 spp.), Phyllostomidae (41 spp.), Emballonuridae (2 spp.), Molossidae (16 spp.), Vespertilionidae (9 spp.), Mormoopidae (1 sp.), Noctilionidae (2 spp) e Natalidade (1 sp.). Estes números representam um aumento de quatorze espécies com registro primário para o estado em comparação com a listagem publicada anteriormente. Ainda assim, é evidente a escassez de informações em diversas regiões do estado, e a necessidade de implementação de coleções zoológicas regionais. O estado de Mato Grosso do Sul representa apenas 4,19% do território brasileiro, mas o número de mamíferos atinge 24,13% do total de espécies que ocorrem no país.

Abstract We updated the checklist of mammals from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil based on primary records only. One hundred and sixty-six mammal species were listed as occurring in the state, 47 of them being medium to large, 47 small mammal and 73 bat species. The listed species are distributed in 31 families: Didelphidae (17 spp.), Dasypodidae (7 spp.), Myrmecophagidae (2 spp.), Cebidae (1 sp.), Callithrichidae (2 spp.), Aotidae (1 sp.), Pitheciidae (1 sp.), Atelidae (1 sp.), Leporidae (1 sp.), Felidae (7 spp.), Canidae (4 spp.), Mustelidae (5 spp.), Mephitidae (2 spp.), Procyonidae (2 spp.), Tapiridae (1 sp.), Tayassuidae (2 spp.), Cervidae (4 spp.), Sciuridae (1 sp.), Cricetidae (22 spp.), Erethizontidae (1 sp.), Caviidae (3 spp.), Dasyproctidae (1 sp.), Cuniculidae (1 sp.), Echimyidae (4 spp.), Phyllostomidae (41 spp.), Emballonuridae (2 spp.), Molossidae (16 spp.), Vespertilionidae (9 spp.), Mormoopidae (1 sp.), Noctilionidae (2 spp.), and Natalidade (1 sp.). These numbers represent an increase of fourteen species with primary records for the state in comparison with the previously published checklist. However, it is evident the scarcity of information at several regions of the state, and the need of implementation of regional zoological collections. The state of Mato Grosso do Sul represent only 4.19% of the Brazilian territory, but the number of mammal species reach 24.13% of the known species occurring in the country.

Population fluctuations of small tropical mammals are often related to temporal and environmental variations in resource availability. Here, we aim to associate population variation of Gracilinanus agilis with seasonality, and type and position of traps in fragments of semi-deciduous forest in Southern Goiás, Brazil. We conducted a mark-recapture study from August 2013 through August 2014. We set wire-cage and Sherman® traps in four transects, with five stations per transect, during three consecutive nights per month. Each station consisted of 1 wire cage and 1 Sherman® trap, placed alternately on the ground and in the understory (1.5- 2 m height). We registered 66 individuals in 121 captures (7.8% capture success). Gracilinanus agilis was more abundant during the dry season in the understory. Males were more abundant in the dry season and females in the wet season. Data reported here are of great value for understanding population and behavioral patterns of G. agilis in the Brazilian savanna.

Las fluctuaciones poblacionales de los pequeños mamíferos tropicales suelen estar relacionados con las variaciones temporales y ambientales en la disponibilidad de recursos. Aquí, nuestro objetivo es asociar la variación poblacional de Gracilinanus agilis con la estacionalidad y el tipo y la posición de las trampas en fragmentos de bosque semideciduo en el sur de Goiás, Brasil. Realizamos el muestreo a través del método de marcado y recaptura, desde agosto de 2013 a agosto de 2014. Establecimos cinco estaciones de captura por transecto, durante tres noches consecutivas por mes. Cada estación de trampas consistió en una jaula de alambre y una trampa Sherman®, colocadas alternativamente en el suelo y sotobosque (1.5-2 m de altura). Se registraron 66 individuos en 121 capturas, lo que resulta en un éxito captura de 7.8%. Gracilinanus agilis fue más abundante en la estación seca, en el sotobosque. Los machos fueron más abundantes en la estación seca y las hembras en la estación húmeda. Los datos reportados aquí son de gran valor para la comprensión de los patrones de población y de comportamiento de G. agilis en la sabana brasileña.

We report the results of the non-volant mammal survey at the Maracaju Mountains located in the central region of Mato Grosso do Sul State, southwestern Brazil. The sampling encompasses different vegetation types of the Cerrado domain that occur in the region. The mammal survey was conducted by the use of pitfalls (1804 bucket-nights), live traps (7508 trap-nights), direct observation and indirect evidence (624 hours of observations). Fifty-eight non-volant mammal species of 9 orders and 20 families were recorded, representing 12% of the Brazilian terrestrial mammal species. The non-volant mammal community of Maracaju Mountains is typical of the Cerrado, but some species found occur in other domains, especially from Pantanal, Atlantic and Amazonian Forests. Among the recorded species, 11 are threatened in Brazil or on a global scale. Therefore, the Maracaju Mountains have a high richness of mammals with endangered and rare species that are still present in the extensive natural areas which persist in the region. These areas are very important for conservation of mammals and should be considered relevant areas for the establishment of Conservation Units in Cerrado and in the Mato Grosso do Sul State.

Se presentan los resultados del inventario de mamíferos no voladores en la sierra de Maracaju, que se encuentra en la región central del estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, en el suroeste de Brasil. El muestreo abarca diferentes tipos de vegetación en la región del Cerrado. El inventario de mamíferos se llevó a cabo mediante el uso de trampas de caída (1804 trampas/noche) y trampas Sherman y Tomahawk (7508-trampas/noche); también se utilizaron datos de observación directa y rastros (624 horas de observaciones). Se registraron 58 especies de mamíferos no voladores de 9 órdenes y 20 familias, lo que representa el 12% de las especies de mamíferos terrestres brasileñas. La comunidad de mamíferos no voladores de la sierra de Maracaju es típica del Cerrado, pero contiene especies que se presentan en otros biomas, especialmente en el Pantanal, Mata Atlántica y Floresta Amazónica. Entre las especies registradas, 11 están amenazadas en Brasil o a una escala global. Así, la sierra de Maracaju tiene una alta riqueza de mamíferos con especies amenazadas y raras que todavía están presentes en los extensos espacios naturales que persisten en la región. Estas áreas son muy importantes para la conservación de los mamíferos y se deben considerar como pertinentes para la creación de unidades de conservación en el Cerrado y en el estado de Mato Grosso do Sul.

Nos revisamos o conhecimento da distribuidlo de Monodelphis kunsi para América do Sul e informamos nove localidades de ocorréncia no Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, sudoeste do Brasil. Estes novos registros cobrem uma lacuna na distribuição de M. kunsi no sudoeste do Brasil. Os espécimes apresentaram ampla distribuição geográfica incluindo diferentes habitas. A falta de estudos no sudoeste do Brasil e a não utilização de armadilhas pitfall podem ser os principais fatores responsáveis pela falta de conhecimento na distribuição das espécies de pequenos mamíferos para esta regiáo.

We review the known distribution of Monodelphis kunsi from South America and reported nine new localities of occurrence in Mato Grosso do Sul state, southwestern Brazil. These new records fill the gap on geographic distribution of M. kunsi in southwestern Brazil. The species presents wide geographic range including distinct habitats. The lack of studies in southwestern Brazil and the non-utilization of pitfall traps can be the main factors responsible for the lack of knowledge on distribution of small mammal species to this region.

This paper examines the frequencies of mammal roadkill in two adjacent biogeographic ecoregions (Atlantic Forest and Cerrado) of Brazil. Mammals were recorded during a seven-year period and over 3,900 km of roads, in order to obtain data for frequencies of species in habitats (sites) and frequencies of species killed by cars on roads. Sites (n = 80) within ecoregions (Cerrado, n = 57; Atlantic Forest, n = 23) were searched for records of mammals. Species surveyed in the entire region totaled 33, belonging to nine orders and 16 families. In the Cerrado, 31 species were recorded in habitats; of these, 25 were found dead on roads. In the Atlantic Forest ecoregions, however, we found 21 species in habitats, 16 of which were also found dead on roads. There was no overall significant difference between ecoregions for frequencies of occurrence in habitats or for roadkills, but there were differences between individual species. Hence, anteaters were mostly recorded in the Cerrado ecoregion, whereas caviomorph rodents tended to be more frequent in the Atlantic Forest ecoregion (seen mainly by roadkills). The greater number of species (overall and threatened) and the greater abundance of species records in the Cerrado suggest that this ecoregion has a greater biodiversity and is better conserved than the Atlantic Forest ecoregion, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, south-western Brazil.
