New nanostructured Fe-(Nb,Cr)-(C,B) multicomponent alloys have been developed for hardfacing application. They have better wear resistance than traditional Fe-Cr-C alloys. The nano-alpha-Fe, eutectic and hard carboborides phases of the weld metal usually show variations with the welding procedure. 6 test samples with different heat input were welded. It was observed that the percentage of eutectic phase and the distance between carboborides increased for the high heat input. Microhardness of eutectic phases showed a linear relationship with the spacing. Samples with high percentage of alpha-Fe phases showed a severe plastic deformation. Wear resistance was optimal for thinner eutectics phases. The presence of needles carboborides improved wear resistance.

ABSTRACT The Super Pulse arc type was developed to provide a solution to butt root pass beads in the semi-automatic welding process with gas protection (GMAW). Unlike standard pulse welding, the Super Pulse uses a sequence of different pulse waveforms to create a cord shape and appearance similar to the GTAW process. It uses higher amperage in the primary phase to improve penetration and low amperage in the second phase to reduce the heat input. Spray transfer is used in the primary phase to improve penetration and short arc in the secondary phase to cool the solder bath giving less heat transfer and less distortion to the base material. In the literature there is little information regarding the relationship between the Super Pulse variables and the microstructural characteristics of the deposited metal. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the times of each phase in Super Pulse mode, on the geometric characteristics of the cord and the solidification in weld deposits of low carbon steels. For this purpose, strands should be welded on an IRAM - IAS U500 42 - F24 plate by varying the phase time of the Super Pulse. In cross sections, the geometry of the bead was determined and in longitudinal sections, the microstructure and the characteristics of the molten and affected areas were determined. Preliminary results showed that bead geometry and solidification were strongly influenced by pulse parameters.

RESUMEN El tipo de arco Súper Pulso fue desarrollado para proporcionar una solución a los cordones de pasada de raíz de juntas a tope, en el proceso de soldadura semiautomático con protección gaseosa (GMAW). A diferencia de la soldadura por pulsos estándar, el Súper Pulso utiliza una secuencia de diferentes formas de onda de pulso para crear una forma y aspecto de cordón similar al proceso GTAW. Utiliza alto amperaje en la fase primaria para mejorar la penetración y un bajo amperaje en la segunda fase para disminuir el calor aportado. Se utiliza la transferencia de spray en la fase primaria para mejorar la penetración y arco corto en la fase secundaria para enfriar el baño de soldadura dando menor transferencia de calor y menor distorsión al material de base. En la literatura hay poca información respecto a la relación entre las variables del Súper Pulso y las características microestructurales del metal depositado. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la influencia de los tiempos de cada fase en modo Súper Pulso, sobre las características geométricas del cordón y la solidificación en depósitos de soldadura de aceros con bajo contenido de carbono. Para tal fin, se soldaron cordones sobre una chapa IRAM - IAS U500 42 - F24 variando el tiempo de fases del Súper Pulso. Sobre cortes transversales se determinó la geometría de los cordones y sobre cortes longitudinales la microestructura, las características de las zonas fundidas y afectadas. Resultados preliminares mostraron que la geometría del cordón y la solidificación estuvieron fuertemente influenciadas por los parámetros del pulso.

Lately modern hardfacing tubular wires for semiautomatic welding with gas protection and without it have been developed. These wires deposit Fe-based nanostructured alloys with high abrasive wear resistance. The information on these new consumables is scarce, especially about the effect that the welding parameters (heat input, shielding gas, arc voltage, current intensity, etc.) have on the deposit, its microstructure and, consequently, its wear behavior. For this reason, in this work it was studied the effect of heat input (voltage, intensity of current and welding velocity) on the properties of a FCAW Fe-based nanostructured deposit obtained without gas protection. This study is a continuation of a previous one in which the same consumable was used under shielding gas. Bead on plate samples were welded using heat inputs between 0.5 and 3.5 kJ/mm. The dimensional study was performed on the beads, chemical composition was determined and the microstructure was analyzed using optical and electronic microscopy and X Ray diffraction. Microhardness, cristalita size and dilution percentage were also measured. It was observed an important influence of the welding parameters on the bead geometry and the microstructure. The operational behavior of this wire, welded without shielding gas, was very good.

Recientemente se han fabricado modernos alambres tubulares utilizados con el proceso de soldadura semiautomática bajo protección gaseosa y sin ella, que depositan aleaciones base Fe nanoestructurados, con alta resistencia al desgaste abrasivo, para aplicaciones de recargue. La información respecto de estos nuevos consumibles es escasa, en especial sobre el efecto que los parámetros de soldadura utilizados (calor aportado, gas de protección, voltaje de trabajo, intensidad de corriente, etc.) tienen sobre el depósito, su microestructura y por consiguiente su comportamiento frente al desgaste. Por tal motivo, en el presente trabajo se estudió el efecto del aporte térmico (tensión, corriente y velocidad de soldadura) sobre el depósito nanoestructurado base hierro, obtenido por FCAW sin protección gaseosa; este trabajo es continuación de otro en el que se estudió el mismo consumible soldado bajo protección gaseosa. Se soldaron muestras con aportes térmicos de entre 0,5 y 3,5 kJ/mm. Se realizó el relevamiento dimensional de los cordones, se analizó la composición química y la microestructura usando microscopías óptica y electrónica de barrido y difracción de rayos X. También se midieron la microdureza del depósito, el tamaño de cristalita y el grado de dilución. Se observó una gran influencia de las condiciones de proceso sobre la geometría del cordón y la microestructura. La operatividad de este consumible, soldado sin protección gaseosa fue muy buena.

In the last years there have been developed several consumables that deposit hard nanostructured iron-based metals with high resistance to abrasive wear. The erosive and abrasive wear resistances are mainly controlled by the chemical composition and the microstructure. In turn, the microstructure of the deposited metal usually shows variations with the experimental welding procedure, particularly related to the heat input. Also, the operating parameters that define the heat input (voltage, current and welding speed) affect aspects such as bead geometry (wide, penetration and reinforcement) and dilution with the base metal of the bead. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of heat input on the geometry of the bead, the dilution and the microstructural characteristics of a nanostructured iron-based alloy deposited by FCAW. Several samples with heat input between 0.5 and 3.5 kJ/mm were welded. Chemical composition was determined, microstructure was studied using both optical and electronic microscopy and X ray diffraction; hardness, grain size and percentage of dilution were measured. The microhardness of the deposit was found between 800 and 870 HV1, grain size variations were between 105 and 130 nm and the dilution ranged between 30 and 40%, depending on process variables used. The highest hardness and the lowest cristallite sizes were obtained with the lowest heat input, associated to a lower dilution.

En los últimos años se han desarrollado consumibles de soldadura que depositan recubrimientos duros de aleaciones base hierro nanoestructuradas de gran resistencia al desgaste abrasivo. Las resistencias al desgaste erosivo y abrasivo están controladas principalmente por la composición química y la microestructura. A su vez, la microestructura del metal depositado puede presentar variaciones con el procedimiento de soldadura empleado, especialmente en relación al aporte térmico. Los parámetros operativos que definen el aporte térmico (tensión, corriente y velocidad de soldadura) afectan aspectos como la geometría del cordón (ancho, penetración y sobremonta) y la dilución con el material base. El propósito de este trabajo fue estudiar el efecto del calor aportado sobre las características geométricas del cordón, la dilución y la evolución microestructural de una aleación nanoestructurada base hierro, depositada por FCAW. Se soldaron muestras con aportes térmicos de entre 0,5 y 3,5 kJ/mm. Sobre cada cupón soldado se realizó un relevamiento dimensional, se analizó la composición química y se caracterizó la microestructura usando microscopías óptica y electrónica de barrido y difracción de rayos X. También se midieron la microdureza del depósito, el tamaño de cristalita y el grado de dilución. Se observó una gran influencia de las condiciones de proceso sobre la geometría del cordón. La dilución varió entre un 30 y un 40%, la microdureza del depósito se encontró entre 800 y 870 HV1 y el tamaño de cristalita osciló entre 105 y 130 nm, en función de las variables de proceso empleadas. Las mayores durezas y los menores tamaños de cristalita se obtuvieron con el menor aporte térmico, asociado a una menor dilución.
