Resumo: Objetivo O estudo comparou a eficiência de duas iscas (minhoca e coração de boi) no monitoramento da abundância do mandi (Pimelodus maculatus) no canal de fuga de barragens hidrelétricas, um dos peixes mais frequentemente mortos por manobras de turbinas. Métodos As amostragens foram bimestrais, de fevereiro de 2014 a dezembro de 2015, nas usinas hidrelétricas de Camargos e Itutinga, rio Grande, bacia do alto rio Paraná, usando anzóis iscados com minhoca e coração de boi. Usamos modelos lineares generalizados para testar a influência da usina hidrelétrica, tipo de isca, vazão defluente, temperatura, transparência e oxigênio dissolvido da água na abundância calculada pela captura por unidade de esforço de mandis. Resultados A maioria dos mandis (73%) foi capturada usando minhoca, mas as capturas por unidade de esforço verificadas para as duas iscas mostraram o mesmo padrão de variação sazonal nas duas usinas. Em ambas as usinas, os mandis capturados com minhoca foram menores que aqueles capturados com coração de boi, e a temperatura da água foi a única variável ambiental significativamente associada à abundância de mandis. Conclusões As duas iscas são eficientes para monitorar variações sazonais na abundância do mandi, que é influenciada apenas pela temperatura da água. Monitorar a abundância do mandi no canal de fuga pode auxiliar na redução da mortalidade de peixes, programando manobras arriscadas de turbinas para períodos de menor abundância do mandi.

Abstract: Aim This study compared the efficiency of two baits (earthworm and cow heart) for monitoring the abundance of mandi catfish (Pimelodus maculatus) in the tailrace of hydropower dams, one of the commonly killed fish in turbine procedures. Methods Sampling occurred every two months from February 2014 to December 2015 at the Camargos and Itutinga hydropower dams, located in the upper Paraná River basin, using hooks baited with earthworm and cow heart. We used generalized linear models to test the influence of dam, bait type, dam outflow discharge, water temperature, transparency, and dissolved oxygen on mandi abundance, calculated as catch per unit effort. Results Most mandi (73%) were caught using earthworms but catch per unit effort of mandi for both baits showed the same pattern of seasonal variation at each dam. At both dams, individuals of mandi sampled using earthworms were smaller than those sampled using cow heart, and water temperature was the only environmental variable significantly associated with the catch per unit effort of mandi. Conclusions Both baits are efficient to monitor seasonal variations in mandi abundance, which is influenced by water temperature. Monitoring the abundance of mandi in the tailrace can help minimizing fish mortality by scheduling risky turbine procedures for periods of lower mandi abundance.

RESUMO A amostragem probabilística, uma recomendação clássica para dados não enviesados, tem sido frequentemente negligenciada. Reservatórios, diferentemente da maioria dos rios, permitem diversos desenhos amostrais probabilísticos para a amostragem de peixes por impor poucas restrições na escolha de pontos de coletas. Neste trabalho, avaliamos se métricas populacionais do Prochilodus lineatus diferem entre amostras de pontos fixos (não mudam a cada campanha) ou variáveis (mudam a cada campanha) nos reservatórios de Volta Grande (VGR) e Jaguara (JR), rio Grande, bacia do alto rio Paraná, Brasil. Amostramos os peixes com redes de emalhar em nove pontos fixos e nove pontos variáveis por campanha, todos probabilísticos. Foram 25 campanhas em RVG e 22 em RJ de 2011 a 2015. Para cada reservatório, fizemos 35 análises para 8 métricas. Encontramos influência do desenho amostral em apenas 7% das análises e em três métricas, aparentemente provocada por dados enviesados dos pontos fixos. Atribuímos a pequena porcentagem de análises influenciada pelo desenho amostral à baixa heterogeneidade espacial dos reservatórios. A escolha do desenho amostral mais apropriado parece depender, além disso, do tipo de variação (temporal ou espacial) que se deseja detectar, e a disponibilidade de tempo e de recurso financeiro.

ABSTRACT Probabilistic sampling, a classical recommendation for unbiased data, has been often overlooked. Fish sampling in reservoirs, unlike most rivers, can be accomplished by a variety of probabilistic sampling designs due to few restrictions in the choice of sampling sites (SSs). We evaluated whether population metrics of Prochilodus lineatus differ between fixed SSs (do not change with each sampling trip) and variable SSs (change with each sampling trip) in the Volta Grande (VGR) and Jaguara (JR) reservoirs of the Grande River, Paraná River basin, Brazil. We used gillnets to sample fish at nine probabilistic fixed SSs and nine probabilistic variable SSs per sampling trip. We conducted 25 sampling trips in VGR and 22 in JR during 2011 to 2015, and performed 35 analyses of 8 metrics for each reservoir. We found sampling design influenced only 7% of the analyses involving three metrics, apparently caused by biased data of fixed SSs. We attribute the small percentage of analyses influenced by sampling design to the low spatial heterogeneity of the reservoirs. The choice of the most appropriate sampling design seems to depend on the type of variation (temporal or spatial) that one wishes to detect, and the availability of time and financial resources.

RESUMO Pirá, Conorhynchos conirostris (Valenciennes, 1840), um grande siluriforme migrador endêmico do rio São Francisco (RSF), está incluído como ameaçado nas listas vermelhas do Brasil e do estado de Minas Gerais. Embora sua pesca esteja proibida, ele ainda é recurso pesqueiro importante, particularmente no médio RSF. Utilizamos dados históricos e atuais de ocorrência e abundância do pirá para determinar se ele atende aos critérios da UICN para ser classificado como ameaçado. Pirá ocorre na calha do RSF, bem como em seus principais afluentes. Ao contrário dos peixes migradores mais conhecidos do RSF, ele não usa lagoas das várzeas como berçários. Na primeira metade do século 20, pirá costumava ocorrer do alto ao baixo RSF. Atualmente, ele é mais abundante no médio RSF. A espécie é rara no alto RSF e parece ainda mais rara no sub-médio RSF. O pirá não é capturado no baixo RSF desde cerca da metade da década de 1980. Apesar da redução na distribuição geográfica, não encontramos evidências para classificar o pirá como espécie ameaçada e, portanto, recomendamos que ele seja removido das listas vermelhas do Brasil e do estado de Minas Gerais.

ABSTRACT Pirá, Conorhynchos conirostris (Valenciennes, 1840), a large migratory catfish endemic to the São Francisco River (SFR), is listed as threatened in the red lists of both Brazil and the state of Minas Gerais. Although fishing for pirá has been prohibited, it is still an important fishery resource, particularly in the middle SFR. We used historical and current occurrence and abundance data regarding pirá to determine if it meets the IUCN criteria of a threatened species. Pirá occurs in the main course of the SFR as well as in its major tributaries. Unlike the most well-known migratory fishes of the SFR, pirá does not use floodplain lakes as nurseries. In the first half of the 20th century, pirá occurred from the upper to the lower SFR. Currently, it is most abundant in the middle SFR, and is rare in the upper SFR and even rarer in the sub-middle SFR. Pirá has not been captured in the lower SFR since around the mid-1980’s. Despite the reduction in its geographic distribution, we did not find evidence to justify considering pirá as threatened. Thus, we recommend that it be removed from the red lists of Brazil and the state of Minas Gerais.

RESUMO Investigamos o padrão de crescimento inicial do pacamã, Lophiosilurus alexandri , um bagre endêmico da bacia do rio São Francisco, Brasil. Larvas de pacamã foram mantidas numa canaleta horizontal de metal galvanizado durante 29 dias após a eclosão. Diariamente, coletamos circa 10 larvas (número total = 285) das quais obtivemos o comprimento total (variável independente) e 11 outras medidas corporais (variáveis dependentes). Fizemos regressões lineares nos dados log transformados para determinar o padrão de crescimento das medidas corporais e respectivo ponto de inflexão das curvas de crescimento. Exceto comprimento do tronco, largura do tronco e volume do saco vitelino, as demais medidas corporais apresentaram crescimento alométrico positivo até o respectivo ponto de inflexão, seguido de redução na taxa relativa de crescimento. Embora a largura do tronco apresentasse crescimento alométrico positivo, não foi detectado um ponto de inflexão significativo. O achatamento dorso-ventral da cabeça, presente nos adultos, mostrou-se evidente nas larvas com o acentuado crescimento alométrico de sua largura. Os barbilhões maxilares exibiram a maior taxa de crescimento. O extraordinário crescimento dos olhos e dos barbilhões maxilares e a habilidade adquirida para a captura de presas (como sugere o crescimento do comprimento bucal) reforçam a hipótese de prioridade de crescimento em que os órgãos essenciais são os primeiros a se desenvolverem.

ABSTRACT We investigated the early life growth pattern of pacamã, Lophiosilurus alexandri , a catfish endemic to the rio São Francisco basin, Brazil. Pacamã larvae were kept in a galvanized trough for 29 days after hatching. We collected approximately 10 larvae daily (total number = 285). We obtained from each specimen the total length (independent variable) and 11 other body measurements (dependent variables). We performed linear regressions on the log-transformed data to determine the growth pattern of the body measurements and the respective inflexion point on the growth curves. Except for trunk length, trunk width and yolk sac volume, the remaining body measurements showed a positive allometric growth coefficient up to the respective IP followed by a decrease in the rate of relative growth afterwards. Although trunk width presented a positive allometric growth, no significant inflexion point was detected. The dorsal-ventral head flattening seen in the adult pacamã was quickly expressed in the larvae as indicated by the large allometric growth of head width. Maxillary barbels showed the highest growth rate. The exceptionally high growth rates of eyes and maxillary barbels and the acquired ability to capture prey (as suggested by mouth length growth) strengthened the hypothesis of growth priorities in which the most essential organs develop first.

Drenagem e parada/partida de turbina podem provocar a morte de toneladas de peixes em usinas hidrelétricas brasileiras. A usina de Três Marias (UTM), rio São Francisco, adotou duas técnicas para reduzir a quantidade de peixes, principalmente do mandi (Pimelodus maculatus, Pimelodidae), afetada durante essas manobras. Essas são: (i) vertimento antes da drenagem de turbina para atrair peixes para fora do canal de fuga, e (ii) grades nas guias das comportas ensecadeiras durante paradas/partidas para prevenir a entrada de peixes no tubo de sucção. Neste estudo, investigamos se o vertimento e as grades reduziram a quantidade de peixes afetados durante drenagem e parada/partida de turbina na UTM. Nós também determinamos se a biomassa de mandis aprisionados em drenagem de turbina pode ser predita pela vazão da turbina (Q) e/ou pela captura por unidade de esforço (CPUE) de mandis no canal de fuga. Devido ao poder estatístico insuficiente, nossos dados foram inconclusivos se o vertimento atraiu mandis para fora do canal de fuga. Verificamos que a presença das grades reduziu significativamente a biomassa de peixes mortos/moribundos em paradas/partidas de turbinas. A biomassa de mandis aprisionada no tubo de sucção nas drenagens foi influenciada principalmente pelo Q (r² = 0.67), seguida da CPUE (r² = 0.49). Como essa biomassa foi negativamente correlacionada com Q, recomendamos que Q seja máxima antes da drenagem para reduzir a biomassa de mandis aprisionada no tubo de sucção. Acreditamos que as informações apresentadas aqui poderão ser úteis para reduzir a quantidade de peixes afetada em manobras de turbinas na UTM e outras usinas hidrelétricas.

Turbine dewatering and stop/startup may lead to the death of tons of fish at Brazilian power dams. The Três Marias Dam (TMD) on the São Francisco River has adopted two techniques to reduce the quantity of fish, mostly mandi (Pimelodus maculatus, Pimelodidae), affected by these maneuvers. They are: (i) spill before turbine dewatering to attract fish out of the tailrace, and (ii) fish screens in the stop log slots during turbine stop/startup to prevent fish from entering the draft tube. Here, we investigated whether spill and fish screens reduced the quantity of fish affected by turbine dewatering and stop/startup at TMD. We also determined whether the biomass of mandi trapped during turbine dewatering may be predicted by turbine discharge (Q) and/or catch per unit effort (CPUE) of mandis in the tailrace. Due to insufficient statistical power, our data were inconclusive as to whether spill attracted mandi out of the tailrace. We verified that the presence of fish screens significantly reduced the biomass of dead/moribund fish during turbine stop/startup. The biomass of mandis trapped in the draft tube during turbine dewatering was mainly influenced by Q (r² = 0.67), followed by CPUE (r² = 0.49). Since the trapped fish biomass correlated negatively with Q, we recommend that Q be maximized before turbine dewatering to reduce quantity of mandi trapped in the draft tube. The information presented here may be useful for reducing the quantity of fish affected by turbine maneuvers at TMD, as well as other dams.

O jaú, Zungaro jahu (Ihering, 1898), é um bagre migrador de grande porte endêmico da bacia do rio da Prata, possui frágil status de conservação e sua ecologia é pouco conhecida. Nós rastreamos uma fêmea adulta de 1,5 m de comprimento total transposta para montante da barragem de Funil, rio Grande, para descrever movimentos migratórios, uso do hábitat, área de vida e atividade circadiana. Fizemos cinco viagens, de abril de 2003 a janeiro de 2004, para localização do peixe marcado. O indivíduo utilizou a zona de transição reservatório-rio, localizada no braço do reservatório de Funil que alagou parte do rio das Mortes. O peixe também utilizou o corpo principal do reservatório. Nós o encontramos principalmente nos antigos leitos dos rios que foram alagados em profundidades que variaram de 8-9 m, na zona de transição reservatório-rio, a 18-21 m, no corpo principal do reservatório de Funil. A área de vida linear foi de 31,4 km. O período de atividade ocorreu no início da noite mas também encontramos atividade durante o dia. Concluindo, este estudo demonstrou que a fêmea adulta de jaú transposta usou hábitats do reservatório, migrando entre o corpo principal e a zona de transição reservatório-rio, preferiu ambientes profundos, apresentou área de vida pequena, e mostrou atividade diurna e noturna.

Jaú, Zungaro jahu (Ihering, 1898), a large migratory catfish endemic to the rio da Prata basin, has a fragile conservation status and its ecology is poorly known. We radio-tracked a female jaú with a total length of 1.5 m that was passed upstream of Funil Dam, rio Grande, to describe its migratory movements, habitat use, linear home range, and diel activity. To track the fish, we made five tracking trips in the period from April, 2003 to January, 2004. In addition to the main body of Funil Reservoir, the fish also used a reservoir-river transition zone located in a branch of Funil Reservoir that flooded part of rio das Mortes. Most of the times, we found the fish in the former beds of streams flooded by the reservoir, at depths that ranged from 8-9 m in the reservoir-river transition zone to 18-21 m in Funil Reservoir. Linear home range of the fish was 31.4 km. The onset of activity occurred early in the evening, but we also detected daytime activity. The conclusion from our study was that the passed adult female jaú used reservoir habitats, migrated between the main body and the reservoir-river transition zone, preferred deep habitats, showed a relatively short home range, and had diurnal and nocturnal activities.

Two piscivorous fishes, peacock bass (Cichla monoculus Spix & Agassiz, 1831) (Perciformes) and piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri Kner, 1860) (Characiformes), were introduced in some Rio Doce valley lakes (19º50'S, 42º40'W) for sport fisheries enhancement. As a consequence, small individuals and species were practically vanished in the host lakes. In this study, the effects of peacock bass and piranha introductions on the diet of a native piscivorous fish, the trahira - Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) are presented. Trahira's diet from three lakes were was compared with the stomach contentsdiet of trahira's living in another between three lakes with and three withoutstocked with the piscivorous species peacock bass and piranha. In the lakes with introduced fishes species, the consumption of fish was significantly smaller and this food item have been this item partly replaced by aquatic invertebrates. This shift on of trahira's diet to the low abundance of its original prey, is attributed to the small fishes. This diet plasticity adaptative capacity he diet plasticity detected for trahira might be allowing its maintenance in the lakes with peacock bass and piranha.

The study reports the changes ocurred in feeding ecology of fish species during a tropical river reservoir formation. It was analysed the stomachal contents of 399 individuals belonging to four species of genus Leporinus (L. elongatus Valenciennes, 1849, n=157; L.friderici (Bloch, 1794), n=87; L. octofasciatus Steindachner, 1917, n=107; L.amblyrhynchus Garavello & Britski, 1987, n=48) during formation of Nova Ponte reservoir, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1993 and 1994. Specimens were separated by sampling period, according with the rate of filling of the reservoir, and standard lenght classes. The species had included in diet vegetal and animal items of autochtone and alochtone origin in several proportions. L. amblyrhynchus fed on basically dipterans in all the sampling periods and length classes. L. elongatus had presented a diverse diet, with predominance of dipterans and vegetal items, and changed the consumed items proportions along the sampling periods and between lenght classes. L. friderici diet was composed mainly by terrestrial insects during the rapid filling period, that were later substituted by fishes and vegetal items. Ontogenetic trophic changes were observed in this species. L. octofasciatus presented a well characterized herbivorous diet, without trophic ontogeny, but with a opportunistic character. Just three pair-species, L. amblyrhynchus-L. elongatus, L. friderici-L. octofasciatus and L. elongatus-L. octofasciatus, have presented some high value of trophic overlap in at least one sampling period. In spite of the fishes of the genus Leporinus being classified like omnivorous in a general way, the differences found between diets of these four species suggest that there is structuration of trophic niches in the reservoir.
