ABSTRACT Background: Direct sowing technique is considered a promising tool for reducing costs and increasing species diversity in restoration projects. However, several factors can limit its success, making it necessary for methodological adjustments to be made in order to maximize the emergence, establishment and initial growth of plants. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the use of fungus Trichoderma asperelloides and hydrogel in the enrichment direct sowing as a strategy to enrich the area in the initial restoration process. The forest species studied were Balfourodendron riedelianum, Cedrela fissilis, Luehea divaricata, Enterolobium contortisiliquum and Parapiptadenia rigida. The experiment was conducted in a factorial design testing absence or presence of the T. asperelloides and absence or presence of hydrogel. Two experiments were established: in the nursery, we evaluations of the emergence of the seedlings were carried out; in the field, we evaluated emergence, survival, height and stem diameter. Results: Under nursery conditions, inoculation and the use of hydrogel did not influence the emergence of species tested. Direct sowing proved to be a promising technique for the enrichment of young restoration plantations in subtropical regions with E. contortisiliquum, P. rigida and C. fissilis. B. riedelianum and L. divaricata seeds did not germinate in the field. Conclusion: The use of T. asperelloides is an efficient strategy to enhance the results of direct sowing, capable of providing higher rates of emergence for E. contortisiliqumm and P. rigida and maximizing the growth in height of E. contortisiliqumm. ABSTRACT We analyzed the rooting of sequoia mini-cuttings from different clones in the four seasons of the year and the use of the logistic model to estimate the time of maximization of rooting in each factor of analysis. Mini-cuttings of five clones grown in clonal mini-garden were placed to root in mini-tunnel in four seasons of the year. Weekly evaluations were performed (from 30 to 93 days) of these variables: survival (%), rooted mini-cuttings (%) and a number of emitted roots. These data were used to adjust the original logistic function. The experiment was set in completely randomized design, in a factorial scheme of 5 (clones) x 4 (seasons), using five replicates of 50 mini-cuttings per experimental unit. During the winter the lowest rooting of mini-cuttings was achieved (85%), with rates higher than 90% in other seasons. In winter, slower rooting also occurred, around 60-70 days, while in other seasons it was between 50-60 days after mini-cutting planting. The rooting process is dependent on the clones. Our data showed that four clones presented rooting greater than 90% and one less than 70%. In general, mini-cuttings can be performed at any time of the year, recommending the period of 90 days in mini-tunnel.

RESUMO O objetivo do estudo foi estimar o tamanho de amostra para avaliar a altura de planta (H), o diâmetro do coleto (D) e a relação altura de planta/diâmetro do coleto (HD) de timbaúva (Enterolobium contortisiliquum) e verificar a variabilidade do tamanho de amostra entre tubetes, doses de fertilizante e idades de avaliação. Foram avaliados dez tratamentos, formados pela combinação de tamanhos de tubetes (110 e 180 cm3) e doses de fertilizante (0, 3, 5, 7 e 9 g L-1 de substrato), no delineamento em blocos, com quatro repetições. Em cinco idades foram determinadas H, D e HD. O tamanho de amostra para H, D e HD é dependente da idade de avaliação. Para os tamanhos de tubetes, doses de fertilizante e idades de avaliação, 22 plantas por unidade experimental (bandeja) são suficientes para estimar a média dessas características, para erro de estimação de 10% da média, com grau de confiança de 95%.

ABSTRACT The objective was to estimate the sample size to evaluate height (H), collar diameter (D) and relation height/collar diameter (HD) of timbauva plants (Enterolobium contortisiliquum) and to verify its variability among tubes, dosages of fertilizer and ages of evaluation. Ten treatments were organized in blocks designed with four replication and formed by the combination of sizes of tubes (110 and 180 cm3) and dosages of fertilizer (0, 3, 5, 7 e 9 g L-1 of substrate). The H, D and HD variables were evaluated in five ages. The sample size to evaluate H, D and HD is dependent on age evaluation. For the tubes, dosages of fertilizer and ages of evaluation, 22 plants per experimental unit (pot) are enough to predict the plants variables, with estimation error equal to 10% of estimated average, with a reliable rating of 95%.

RESUMO A crescente demanda por mudas de espécies florestais nativas exige o aprimoramento do padrão de qualidade do processo produtivo, por meio de técnicas mais eficientes utilizadas nos viveiros. Dessa forma, este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito de diferentes doses de fertilizante de liberação controlada (FLC) e volume de tubetes na produção de mudas de Parapiptadenia rigida em viveiro. Foi avaliado o efeito de cinco doses (0, 3, 6, 9 e 12 g L-1 de substrato) de FLC, NPK (18-5-9) combinadas com três volumes de tubetes (50, 110 e 180 cm3). Foram realizadas, mensalmente, durante sete meses, mensurações da altura (H), diâmetro do coleto (DC) e calculada a relação H/DC. Aos 210 dias foram avaliadas as massas secas da parte aérea, sistema radicular, total e determinado o teor de macro e micronutrientes na parte aérea das mudas. De maneira geral, a dose de 9 g L-1 de substrato combinada com o tubete de 180 cm3 apresentou os melhores resultados para as variáveis morfológicas analisadas, obtendo-se mudas com padrão de qualidade para o plantio a campo.

ABSTRACT Growing demand for native tree seedlings will require improvements in quality standards of production processes through the use of more efficient cultivation techniques. This study evaluated the effects of different doses of controlled release fertilizer (CRF) and different container volumes in the production of Parapiptadenia rigida seedlings. We examined the effects of five different concentrations (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 g L-1 substrate) of CRF (18-5-9 NPK) and three different container volumes (50, 110 and 180 cm3) on seedling height (H) and collar diameter (CD) measured monthly for seven months and then calculated H/CD ratios. After 210 days of growth, the dry masses of the aerial portions, root systems, and total masses were determined, as well as the concentrations of macro- and micronutrients in the aerial portions of the seedlings. In general, the dose 9 g L-1 substrate combined with the 180 cm3 cultivation tubes demonstrated the best results in terms of the morphological variables analyzed, resulting in consistent quality seedlings for field planting.

A utilização de mudas de qualidade é fundamental para o estabelecimento de plantios florestais, o que é alcançado por meio de técnicas adequadas desde a fase de viveiro. Assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo investigar a influência de diferentes composições de substratos e do volume de recipiente (tubetes) no crescimento de mudas de canjerana (Cabralea canjerana), no viveiro e no campo. Em viveiro foram avaliadas três composições de substratos à base de turfa (100% turfa, turfa + 20% casca de arroz carbonizada (CAC) e turfa + 40% CAC) combinadas com dois tamanhos de tubetes (100 e 280 cm3). Foram realizadas mensalmente, durante 330 dias, mensurações do diâmetro do coleto (DC) e da altura (H), e foi calculada também a relação H/DC. Aos 330 dias foram avaliadas as massas secas radicular, aérea e total e o índice de qualidade de Dickson. Os mesmos tratamentos foram avaliados em campo, durante um período de 360 dias, e foi mensurado a cada 90 dias, o DC e a H, e calculada a H/DC. No viveiro e em campo, os experimentos foram conduzidos com delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Mudas de canjerana podem ser produzidas em substrato composto por 60% de turfa e 40% de casca de arroz carbonizada sem prejuízo do seu crescimento em campo, tendo em vista a economia que representa no viveiro. O uso do tubete de 280 cm3proporcionou somente crescimento superior das mudas na fase de plantio, sendo que o diâmetro do coleto e a massa seca radicular expressaram o melhor desempenho.

The use of quality seedlings is essential for the establishment of forest plantations, which is achieved through the use of appropriate techniques from the nursery. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the influence of substrate composition and volume of container (tubes) in the growth of seedlings of canjerana (Cabralea canjerana), in the nursery and field. In nursery, three compositions of peat substrates were evaluated (100% peat, peat + 20% rice hulls (RH) and peat + 40% RH) and combined with two sizes of containers (100 and 280 cm3). Measurements of root collar diameter (DC) and height (H) were performed monthly during 330 days, and the ratio H/DC was also calculated. At 330 days, the root, air and total dry masses and Dickson's quality index were assessed. The same treatments were evaluated in the field during a period of 360 days and DC and H were measured and H/DC was calculated in every 90-day period. In the nursery and field experiments were carried out with experimental design of random blocks, with four replications. Seedlings of canjerana can be produced in a substrate composed of 60% peat and 40% of rice hulls without harming its growth in the field, with a view that the economy is in nursery. The tube of the tube in the size 280 cm3 only provided superior growth of seedlings during the field phase, where seedlings produced in these containers expressed a better performance in relation to root collar diameter and root dry mass.

Neste estudo, objetivou-se caracterizar os mecanismos de regeneração natural em um remanescente de Floresta Ombrófila Mista. O trabalho foi realizado na Floresta Nacional de São Francisco de Paula, RS, Brasil, utilizando seis conglomerados de 1 ha, com 16 parcelas (20×20 m) cada, desconsiderando 10 m de bordadura. A amostragem da chuva de sementes (CS) foi realizada em 96 coletores circulares (1 m²), distribuídos no centro de cada parcela. O banco de sementes do solo (BS) foi amostrado de forma aleatória, a 3 m de cada coletor da CS, e o banco de plântulas (BP) foi amostrado em subparcelas de 2×2 m, alocadas a 4 m dos coletores, contabilizando o número de indivíduos (altura > 30 cm e diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) < 1 cm) para cada espécie. Os mecanismos de regeneração foram avaliados quanto à composição florística e estrutura horizontal. Na CS, foram amostradas 81 espécies, 46 gêneros e 28 famílias, no BS, 103, 65 e 41 e no BP, 88, 57 e 36, respectivamente. A riqueza encontrada e abundante frutificação de espécies com dispersão zoocórica indicam a importância da chuva de sementes como mecanismo estratégico para o equilíbrio da fauna e flora no ecossistema. O banco de sementes do solo demonstra potencial para colonização imediata e restabelecimento da vegetação após perturbações e o banco de plântulas consiste na principal estratégia de regeneração de muitas espécies arbóreas que compõe a atual estrutura da floresta.

This study aimed to characterize the mechanisms of natural regeneration in a Mixed Subtropical Wet Forest remnant. The study was conducted in the National Forest of São Francisco de Paula, RS, Brazil, using six conglomerates (1 ha), with 16 plots (20×20 m) each, disregarding 10 m surround. The sampling of the seed rain (SR) was carried out in 96 circular collectors (1 m²), distributed in the center of each plot. The soil seed bank (SB) was sampled randomly in a distance of 3 m of each SR collector and the seedling bank (SeB) was sampled in plots of 2×2 m, located 4 m from SR collectors, counting the number of individuals (height > 30 cm and diameter at breast height (DBH) < 1 cm) for each species. The regeneration mechanisms were evaluated through the floristic composition and horizontal structure. In SR, were sampled 81 species, 46 genera and 28 families, in SB, 103, 65 and 41, and in SeB, 88, 57 and 36, respectively. The richness found and the presence of species with abundant fruiting and seed dispersal by animals, indicate the importance of seed rain as a strategic mechanism for the balance of flora and fauna in the ecosystem. The soil seed bank demonstrates potential for colonization and immediate restoration of vegetation after disturbances and the seedling bank is the main strategy for regeneration of many tree species that make up the current structure of the forest.

Conhecer a capacidade de tolerância à dessecação e ao armazenamento das sementes tem sido imprescindível para disponibilizar condições adequadas para a manutenção da viabilidade após a coleta. A velocidade de secagem é um dos fatores que tem influenciado na resposta fisiológica das sementes de diversas espécies. Deste modo, buscou-se verificar o efeito da secagem lenta na capacidade de tolerância à dessecação e ao armazenamento das sementes de Genipa americana L. Sementes com 47% de umidade (recém-colhidas) foram secas em soluções salinas até 30, 20, 15, 10 e 5% de umidade, testando-se a viabilidade. Ao atingir 10 e 5% de umidade as sementes foram armazenadas a -20 ºC, avaliando-se a viabilidade a cada 30 dias durante três meses. Sementes recém-colhidas apresentaram 98% de germinação sem perda de viabilidade até 10% de umidade. Sementes secas a 10 e 5% de umidade apresentaram redução na viabilidade após 30 dias de armazenamento, porém não houve a perda total de germinação após este período. A secagem lenta aumentou a capacidade de tolerância à dessecação e ao armazenamento das sementes de Genipa americana se comparada às informações descritas na literatura.

Knowledge of the capacity of desiccation and storage tolerance of seeds is essential to provide adequate conditions necessary to maintain viability after seed collection. Drying rate is one of the factors which have been described as affecting the physiological response of seeds of various species. Literature reports that Genipa americana seeds exhibit an intermediate behavior, quickly losing viability if stored at negative temperatures. Thus, this work aimed to verify the effect of slow drying over the capacity of desiccation and storage tolerance of Genipa americana seeds. Seeds with 47% of water content (recently harvested) were dried over salt solutions until reaching 30%, 20%, 15%, 10% and 5% of water content. After drying to 10% and 5% of water content a reduction in seed viability was observed after 30 days of storage without the total loss of germination after three months in these conditions. The slow drying increased the capacity for desiccation and storage tolerance of the Genipa americana seeds if compared to the information described in literature.

O angico-vermelho [Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan] é uma espécie arbórea nativa do Brasil, utilizada para construções rurais, lenha e carvão e também em programas de restauração florestal, porém pouco estudada quanto à tecnologia de sementes. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar diferentes substratos para condução do teste de germinação e a qualidade fisiológica das sementes armazenadas por 420 dias, em diferentes embalagens e ambientes. Primeiramente foi identificado o substrato mais adequado para condução do teste de germinação, e após procedeu-se o acondicionamento das sementes em três tipos de embalagens (papel, plástico e vidro) e o armazenamento em três ambientes (câmara fria, geladeira e laboratório). Amostras de sementes foram retiradas a cada 60 dias, e em cada condição de armazenamento, para avaliação do grau de umidade, germinação e vigor (teste de condutividade elétrica). Foi utilizado o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualisado, com tratamentos arranjados em esquema de parcelas subdivididas para períodos de armazenamento. Constatou-se que o teste de germinação pode ser conduzido na forma entre areia, com a primeira contagem realizada aos quatro e última aos 10 dias após a semeadura. As sementes podem ser armazenadas em geladeira, acondicionadas, preferencialmente, em embalagem de papel, porém embalagens de plástico e vidro também são adequadas.

"Angico-vermelho" [Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan] is an arboreal forestal species native from Brazil used for rural constructions, firewood, charcoal, and forest restoration programs; however it is little studied in regard to seed technology. Thus, the objective of this study was assessing different substrates for conducting tests of germination and physiological quality of seeds stored under different environments and packings for 420 days. Firstly, the most suitable substrate for the germination test was identified and subsequently the seeds were stored into three different types of packings (paper, plastic and glass) and three different environmental conditions (cold chamber, refrigerator and laboratory). Seed samples from each storage condition were removed at every 60 days for evaluating moisture content, germination and vigor (electrical conductivity test). A completely randomized experimental design was used with treatments arranged into a split-plot design for storage periods. It was found that the germination test can be conducted using between the sand as substrate, with the first count of emergence of seedlings performed at the fourth day and the final counting at 10 days after seeding. That seeds can be stored preferably in refrigerator into paper packings, although packings of plastic and/or glass are also suitable.

RESUMO Este trabalho objetivou identificar a melhor metodologia que expressasse a germinação e a qualidade das sementes de Allophylus edulis, analisando diferentes substratos. Inicialmente, realizou-se a caracterização do lote através de Peso de Mil Sementes (PMS), Teor de Água (TA) e Condutividade Elétrica (CE). No Teste de Germinação foram avaliados os seguintes tratamentos (substratos): sobre papel mata-borão (PMB), sobre papel filtro (SPF), sobre (SA) e entre areia (EA), sobre (SV) e entre vermiculita (EV) e rolo de papel (RP), sendo conduzidos em câmara de germinação Mangelsdorf (25 °C). Os dados foram expressos em percentagem de plântulas normais, anormais, sementes mortas e firmes e ainda, avaliado o índice de velocidade de germinação. Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições por tratamento. Os substratos sobre areia (SA) e entre vermiculita (EV) foram os mais adequados para o teste de germinação, sendo que a primeira contagem de plântulas normais pôde ser feita entre 12 e 15 dias e a final aos 24 dias após a semeadura

ABSTRACT This study investigated the methodology that best expresses the germination and quality of Allophylus edulis seeds, analyzing different substrates. Initially, there was the characterization of the batch by Weight of Thousand Seeds (PMS), Water Content (TA) and Electrical Conductivity (CE). In the Germination Test were evaluated the following treatments (substrates): on blotting paper (PMB), on filter paper (SPF) on (SA) and among sand (EA), on (SV) and among vermiculite (EV) and paper roll (RP), being conducted in a germination chamber Mangelsdorf (25 °C). Data were expressed in percentages of normal and abnormal seedlings, dead seeds and firm and also, it was assessed the speed of germination index. It was used a completely randomized design with four replicates per treatment. The substrates among sand (SA) and among vermiculite (EV) were the most suitable for the germination test and the first count of normal seedlings can be made between 12 and 15 days and the final 24 days after sowing.

Em viveiros florestais, é importante determinar o número de plantas a serem avaliadas para que as inferências sobre crescimento das mudas sejam confiáveis. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar o tamanho de amostra (número de plantas) necessário para avaliar a altura de planta, o diâmetro do coleto e a relação altura de planta/diâmetro do coleto de mudas de canjerana (Cabralea canjerana (Vell.) Mart.) e verificar a variabilidade do tamanho de amostra entre tubetes, substratos e idades de avaliação. Foi conduzido um experimento, em viveiro, no qual foram avaliados nove tratamentos, formados pela combinação de três tamanhos de tubetes (100, 180 e 280cm³) e três tipos de substratos (100% de turfa, 80% de turfa + 20% de casca de arroz carbonizada e 60% de turfa + 40% de casca de arroz carbonizada), no delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Em dez idades de avaliação, foram mensurados os caracteres altura de planta e diâmetro do coleto, e calculada a relação altura de planta/diâmetro do coleto, em dez plantas, tomadas aleatoriamente, na área central de cada unidade experimental. Foram realizadas análises de variância, testes de comparação de médias, verificação de normalidade e calculado o tamanho de amostra. O tamanho de amostra para avaliar a altura de planta, o diâmetro do coleto e a relação altura de planta/diâmetro do coleto de mudas de canjerana é dependente da idade de avaliação. Para os tubetes, substratos e idades de avaliação estudados, 18 plantas por unidade experimental (bandeja) são suficientes para a estimação da média desses caracteres, para um erro de estimação igual a 10% da média estimada, com grau de confiança de 95%.

In nurseries, it is important to determine the number of plants to be evaluated so that inferences about seedling growth are reliable. The aim of this research was to estimate the sample size (number of plants) necessary to evaluate plant height, collar diameter and relation plant height/collar diameter of canjerana seedlings (Cabralea canjerana (Vell.) Mart.) and to verify its variability among tubes, substrates and ages evaluation. An experiment was conducted in the nursery, in which nine treatments, organized in randomizes blocks design with four replication, were formed by the combination of three sizes of tubes (100, 180 and 280cm³) and three substrates (100% peat, 80% peat + 20% rice hulls and 60% peat + 40% rice hulls). It was evaluated the following characters, in ten ages: plant height, collar diameter and relation plant height/collar diameter, in ten plants sampled at random in each experimental unit. Analyses of variance, means comparison tests and verification of normality were carried and the sample size was calculated. The sample size to evaluate the plant height, collar diameter and relation plant height/collar diameter of canjerana seedlings is dependent on age evaluation. For the tubes, substrates and ages evaluation studied, 18 plants per experimental unit (pot) are enough to predict the these characters average, with an estimation error equal to 10% of estimated average, with a degree confidence of 95%.

RESUMO As matas ciliares constituem corredores ecológicos e possibilitam a preservação da biodiversidade e dos recursos hídricos. A manutenção dessas funções ecológicas, muitas vezes, necessita da recuperação ambiental desses ecossistemas. Dessa forma, este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar a vegetação arbórea e identificar espécies para a recuperação em áreas de mata ciliar. O estudo foi realizado em dois fragmentos nas margens direita e esquerda do rio Ijuí, município de Ijuí, RS. A vegetação foi inventariada em dez faixas sistemáticas, com comprimento variando de 17 a 35 m, perpendiculares ao rio, com distância de 50 m entre si, as quais foram subdivididas em parcelas de 10 x 10 m, totalizando 21, onde foram identificados e medidos todos os indivíduos com circunferência a 1,3 m do solo (CAP) ≥ 15 cm. Os dados obtidos no inventário foram utilizados na caracterização florística e estrutural da vegetação, na análise de agrupamento (TWINSPAN) e serviram de base na indicação de espécies para recuperação. Nos dois fragmentos, foram identificadas 38 espécies distribuídas em vinte famílias botânicas. Os três agrupamentos formados caracterizaram diferentes estágios sucessionais. Para a recuperação ambiental de áreas perturbadas, com características ambientais semelhantes, sugere-se o uso de Ateleia glazioviana, Helietta apiculata, Dalbergia frutescens e Parapiptadenia rigida como facilitadoras da sucessão. O plantio de Eugenia uniflora e Prunus myrtifolia pode auxiliar na atração da fauna dispersora. As espécies Cupania vernalis e Pilocarpus pennatifolius podem ser utilizadas no enriquecimento de áreas em estágio mais avançado da sucessão florestal.

ABSTRACT Riparian forests form ecological corridors and enable the preservation of biodiversity and water resources. The maintenance of these ecological functions often requires the environmental restoration of these ecosystems. Thus, we aimed to characterize the arboreal vegetation and identify species for recovery in areas of riparian forests. The study was conducted in two fragments on the left and right banks of the river Ijuí, in the municipality of Ijuí, RS. The vegetation was inventoried in 10 systematic strips, of lengths from 15-35 m, perpendicular to the river, with a distance of 50 m, which were subdivided into plots of 10 x 10 m, totaling 21, in which were identified and measured all individuals with girth breast height (GBH) ≥ 15cm. Data from the inventory were used in the floristic and structural characterization of vegetation, in a clustering analysis (TWINSPAN) and supplied a basis for the indication of species for recovery. We identified 38 species distributed in 20 families. The three groups formed showed different succession stages. For the environmental recovery of altered areas, with similar environmental characteristics, it is suggested the use of Ateleia glazioviana, Helietta apiculata, Dalbergia frutescens and Parapiptadenia rigida as these facilitate succession. The planting of Eugenia uniflora and Prunus myrtifolia can help in attracting disperser fauna. Cupania vernalis and Pilocarpus pennatifolius may be used for the enrichment of areas in a more advanced stage of forest succession.
