RESUMO: O residual prolongado dos herbicidas do grupo das imidazolinonas é um problema para as culturas semeadas em sucessão ao arroz irrigado. Uma maneira de reduzir a concentração destes compostos no solo é utilizando a fitorremediação. Contudo, o aumento da concentração de CO2, pode interferir no processo de fitorremediação de plantas. Outra consequência que pode ser causada pelas mudanças climáticas é a produção de compostos alelopáticos das espécies forrageiras utilizadas como remediadoras. O presente estudo teve por objetivos quantificar se há perda no capacidade do azevém semeado em solo com residual de imazapir+imazapic de remediado quando submetido ao aumento da concentração de CO2 na atmosfera, combinada com estresse hídrico e alta população. A combinação do estresse hídrico com a concentração de CO2 de 700 µmol mol-1 causa aumento da alelopatia do azevém. De maneira geral, esses são os primeiros resultados que indicam o efeito significativo do aumento dos níveis de CO2 com relação à eficácia de remediação e de alelopatia de plantas usadas para fitorremediação.

ABSTRACT: The long temporal persistence of select herbicides negatively impacts crops sown in succession to irrigated rice. One way to reduce these compounds in the soil over time is through phytoremediation. However, elevated CO2 concentrations may interfere with the phytoremediation process. Another consequence of climate change is the production of allelopathic compounds by forage species used as remedial agents. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of elevated CO2 concentration and drought stress on the remediation of soil samples contaminated with imazapyr + imazapic herbicides by Italian ryegrass and any subsequential affect on the allelopathic effect of this species. We report that the increasing CO2 decreased the phytoremediation potential of ryegrass. Water stress combined with a CO2 concentration of 700 µmol mol-1 caused increased allelopathy. Overall, these are the first data to indicate a significant effect of higher CO2 levels with respect to both phytoremediation efficacy and allelopathic potential of the plant species used in phytoremediation.

RESUMO: Glyphosate é um dos principais herbicidas utilizados controle de azevém. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar como a curva de resposta à dose de glyphosate é afetada por densidade populacional de azevém e estádio de desenvolvimento das plantas. Para atender este objetivo foram realizados dois experimentos em casa de vegetação (um com Lolium multiflorum e outro com Lolium rigidum) e dois experimentos em campo. Nos experimentos em casa de vegetação, o delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatoral; o fator A foi a densidade de plantas, e o fator B, doses de glyphosate. Em campo, foram realizados dois experimentos em blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas. As parcelas foram constituídas de doses de glyphosate (0, 40, 80, 120, 160, 250 e 350 g ha-1), e as subparcelas, por três densidades de azevém (8 plantas m-²; 140 plantas m-² com desbaste antes da aplicação; e 140 plantas m-2 com desbaste depois da aplicação do herbicida). Em um experimento a aplicação de glyphosate foi realizada aos 28 dias após a emergência (DAE), e em outro, aos 51 DAE. As plantas de azevém em alta densidade necessitaram de uma dose maior do herbicida para se obter o mesmo nível de controle que as plantas sob baixa densidade. Além do efeito da densidade, na aplicação tardia houve necessidade de maior dose de glyphosate para se obter o mesmo nível de controle, em comparação à aplicação em estádio inicial. A eficácia de herbicida foi afetada pela densidade populacional e pelo estádio de desenvolvimento das plantas.

ABSTRACT : Glyphosate is one of the main herbicides used to control ryegrass. The objective of this research was to evaluated whether the glyphosate dose-response curve is affected by density of ryegrass plants in two phenological growth stages. To attend this objective, two experiments were carried out in greenhouse (one with Lolium multiflorum and another with Lolium rigidum) and two under field conditions. In the greenhouse experiments, the experimental design was a completely randomized design in a factorial scheme, with factor A as plant density and factor B as glyphosate doses. In the field, two experiments were carried out in a randomized block design in a split-plot scheme. Plots consisted of glyphosate doses (0, 40, 80, 120, 160, 250, and 350 g ha-1), and the subplots consisted of three ryegrass densities (8 plants m-2, 140 plants m-2 with thinning before herbicide application, and 140 plants m-2 with thinning after herbicide application). In one experiment, glyphosate was sprayed at 28 days after emergence (DAE), whereas in another the application was carried out at 51 DAE. High-density ryegrass plants required a higher herbicide dose to obtain the same level of control of low-density plants. In addition to the density effect, an increased glyphosate dose was necessary for the late application to obtain the same level of control when compared to the initial application. Herbicide effectiveness was affected by population density and plant development stage.

RESUMO A temperatura impacta a seletividade de herbicidas em pós-emergência de forma complexa. O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver um método para estimar o impacto da temperatura na seletividade de herbicida, utilizando aveia cultivada (Avena sativa) e iodosulfuron-methyl como modelos de estudo. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em casa de vegetação/câmaras de crescimento, utilizando-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com os tratamentos arranjados como bifatorial, com três repetições. O primeiro fator consistiu de seis temperaturas (10, 15, 20, 24, 28 e 32 oC), a que foram submetidas as plantas durante uma semana após a pulverização. O segundo fator correspondeu a sete doses de iodosulfuron (0; 0,2; 0,4; 0,8; 1,2; 5; e 20 g ha-1). Para cada temperatura, curvas de regressão foram ajustadas aos dados de dose-resposta. A taxa de eficácia do herbicida foi calculada por método inovador aqui descrito. A tolerância da cultura ao herbicida aumentou proporcionalmente com a temperatura, sugerindoque a detoxificação do produto está beneficiando a seletividade. Em termos práticos, espera-se que a tolerância das culturas de aveia-branca ao herbicida iodosulfuron seja acentuada em regiões do mundo com temperaturas elevadas. O método desenvolvido aqui pode ser usado para determinar o efeito da temperatura na eficácia de herbicidas em plantas daninhas.

ABSTRACT Temperature affects the selectivity of post-emergence herbicides in a complex manner. The objective of this work was to develop a method to estimate the impact of temperature on herbicide selectivity using the white oat (Avena sativa) crop and iodosulfuron-methyl as study models. Greenhouse/growth-chamber experiments were conducted using a completely randomized design with the treatments arranged as a bi-factorial, with three repetitions. The first factor consisted of six temperatures (10, 15, 20, 24, 28 and 32 oC) to which the plants were submitted during one week after the herbicide spray. The second factor corresponded to seven doses of iodosulfuron-methyl (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, 5 and 20 g ha-1). For each temperature, regression curves were fitted to the dose-response data. The rate of herbicide efficacy was computed through the method first proposed in this study. The crop tolerance to the herbicide increased proportionally to the temperature, suggesting the product detoxification is improving crop selectivity. In practical terms, it is predicted that white oat crop tolerance to iodosulfuron-methyl increases in regions of the world with high temperatures. The method developed here also can be used to understand the effect of temperature on herbicide efficacy on weeds.

RESUMO O quinclorac é um herbicida sistêmico absorvido por sementes em germinação, raízes e folhas de plântulas. Ele é um produto seletivo para as culturas de arroz, canola, cevada, milho, pastagens e sorgo. Ele pode ser utilizado no controle de diversas plantas daninhas dicotiledôneas e monocotiledôneas. O funcionamento bioquímico desse herbicida na planta tem intrigado os cientistas por quase duas décadas. Os objetivos desta revisão foram apresentar evidências de três hipóteses sobre o funcionamento bioquímico do quinclorac e, a partir das evidências existentes, propor um modo de ação integrador. A primeira teoria sobre o modo de ação do quinclorac é apoiada por evidências de inibição da incorporação de glicose em celulose e em hemiceluloses, afetando assim a síntese de parede celular. A segunda hipótese sugere que o quinclorac atua como auxina sintética em espécies dicotiledôneas. Em espécies gramíneas, todavia, sua ação parece envolver o estímulo da atividade da enzima ácido 1-carboxílico-1-aminociclopropano sintase e o aumento posterior da produção de etileno e, principalmente, cianeto em níveis fitotóxicos. Uma terceira hipótese evidencia que a ação do quinclorac em algumas espécies depende da formação de espécies reativas de oxigênio (ROS). Aparentemente esses processos não são excludentes, por isso é proposta uma teoria integradora para ação do quinclorac. Teoriza-se que as atividades bioquímicas citadas constituem o fundamento da ação desse herbicida e que a manifestação de determinada rota depende das espécies vegetais e dos estágios de desenvolvimento da planta, entre outros fatores.

ABSTRACT Quinclorac is a systemic herbicide absorbed by germinating seeds, roots and leaves of seedlings. It is a selective compound for crops such as rice, canola, barley, corn, sorghum, and pasture. Quinclorac can be used to control various monocots and dicotyledonous weed species. The biochemical function of this herbicide in the plant has intrigued scientists for nearly four decades. The objectives of this review are to present evidence of three hypotheses on the biochemical functioning of quinclorac and to propose an integrative mode of action. The first theory on the mode of action of quinclorac is supported by evidence of inhibition of incorporation of C14-glucose into cellulose and hemicellulose, thus, affecting the cell wall synthesis. The second hypothesis suggests that quinclorac acts as an auxin in broadleaved weed species. In grass species, however, this herbicide appears to stimulate the activity of the 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase enzyme and, subsequently, to increase the ethylene production; also, it seems to increase the cyanide acid content to phytotoxic levels. A third hypothesis to explain the harmful effect in some plant species is the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Apparently, these processes are not mutually exclusive; therefore, an integrative theory for the action of quinclorac is suggested. It is theorized that the aforementioned biochemical activities are interconnected and can be the phytotoxic backbone to explain the herbicidal effect depending on the plant species and the plant growth stage, among other factors.
