Abstract: Parmenides introduces two “novelties” which will remain forever as the pillars of “philosophy”: the certainty that, if there are ὄντα (who could deny it?) it is because there is εἶναι; and the necessity of following a “method” in order to come to know. The very narrow limits of this article prevent us from dealing with the first question. On the other hand, we try to justify the second. The notion of path (= method) is fundamental in Parmenides (the notion, represented by 7 different words, appears 21 times in the recovered fragments of his Poem). Now, a way supposes a traveler, a guide and a goal to reach. According to the dichotomous scheme of his thought, there is for Parmenides a “good” path (traveled by a future philosopher, guided by the Heliads and the Goddess and whose goal is the truth) and a “bad” path (traveled by the mortals “who know nothing”, guided by a wandering thought and which advances without precise direction). These two paths are opposed in fr. 6, where the Goddess says that, unlike (δέ) the path of mortals, the κέλευθος of all that are, is παλίντροπος, for it has to necessarily reach the starting point, which is the κέλευθος πειθοῦς of verse 2.5. Fr. 5 (“It is common (ξυνόν δέ) for me from where (ὁππόθεν) I begin, for I shall return to it again” [πάλιν]) confirms this assumption.

Résumé: Parménide introduit deux “nouveautés” qui vont rester pour toujours comme les piliers de la “philosophie”: la certitude selon laquelle, s’il y a des ὄντα (qui pourrait le nier?) c’est parce qu’il y a εἶναι; et la nécessité de suivre une “méthode” pour arriver à connaître. Les très étroites limites de cet article nous empêchent de nous occuper de la première question. En revanche, nous essayons de justifier la deuxième. La notion de chemin (= méthode) est fondamentale chez Parménide (la notion, représentée par 7 mots différents, apparaît 21 fois dans les fragments récupérés de son Poème). Or, un chemin suppose un voyageur, un guide et un but à atteindre. Selon le schéma dichotomique propre à sa pensé, il y a pour Parménide un “bon” chemin (parcouru par un futur philosophe, guidé par les Héliades et la Déesse et qui a pour but la vérité) et un “mauvais” chemin (parcouru par les mortels “qui ne savent rien”, guidés par une pensée vagabonde et qui avance sans direction précise). Ces deux chemins sont opposés au fr. 6, où la Déesse dit que, contrairement (δέ) au chemin des mortels, le κέλευθος de tout ce qui est, est παλίντροπος, car il a doit obligatoirement rejoindre le point de départ, qui est le κέλευθος πειθοῦς du vers 2.5. Le fr. 5 (“Il est commun (ξυνόν δέ) pour moi où (ὁππόθεν) je commence, car j’y reviendrai à nouveau” [πάλιν]) confirme cette hypothèse.

Abstract: The definition of the sophist as "image-maker" allows Plato to add to the novelties he presents in the Sophist two topics he hadn't deepened in his previous dialogues: (a) a "definition" of being (247e) and (b) the influence this position will have on the relationship between image and truth. From a first definition of the image proposed by Theaetetus in 240a we deduce that, even if it is not true, it is "really" (ὄντως) an image, which does not coincide with the devalued or secondary reality that Plato had always attributed to this notion, from which all truth was absent. This conclusion, indeed, astonishes Theaetetus, attached to the Platonic "orthodoxy". This astonishment is not present in the orthodox version of the text of the passage 240a-c of the Sophist, which inherits from a modification of the widespread text from 1851. Once the original version is restored, the definition of the fact of being proposed in 247e justifies the "really real" character of the image, which respects the condition required to everything that "possesses" being: the possibility of acting or being affected. Indeed, the image is "affected" by the model, that it tries to imitate, because the model "affects" it. The image, even if it is not true, is real.

Résumé: La définition du sophiste comme "faiseur d'images" permet à Platon d'ajouter aux nouveautés qu'il présente dans le Sophiste deux sujets qu'ils n'avait pas approfondi dans ses dialogues précédents: (a) une "définition" du fait d'être (247e) et (b) l'influence que cette position aura en ce qui concerne les rapports entre l'image et la vérité. À partir d'une première définitions de l'image proposé par Théétète en 240a on déduit qu'elle, même si elle n'est pas vraie, est "réellement" (ὄντως) une image, ce qui ne coïncide avec la réalité dévalué ou secondaire que Platon avait toujours attribué à cette notion, de laquelle al vérité était absente. Cette conclusion, en effet, étonne Théétète, attaché à l"orthodoxie" platonicienne. Cet étonnement n'est pas présent dans la version orthodoxe du texte du passage 240a-c du Sophiste, qui hérite d'une modification du texte répandu à partir de 1851. Une fois rétablie la version originaire, la définition du fait d'être proposé en 247e justifie le caractère "réellement réel" de l'image, qui respecte la condition exigée à tout ce qui "possède" de l'être: la possibilité d'agir ou d'être affecté. En effet, l'image est "affectée" par le modèle, qu'elle essaie d'imiter, car le modèle " sur" elle. L'image, même si elle n'est pas vraie, est réelle.

Abstract: As all the pre-Socratic, Parmenides became interested in the study of the phusis, and consider he as a philosopher phusikos is natural. L. Rossetti, in his cappolavoro in two volumes Un altro Parmenide (Diogene Multimedia, Bologne, 2017), studied exhaustively the question. However, the perspective from which Rossetti faces the problem, not solve two major obstacles: the place of the “physical” texts in the so- called “doxa of mortals”, and the negative character that it has to Parmenides. Dependent on the arbitrary division of the poem in two sections, proposed in 1795 by G.G. Fülleborn, “physical” texts of Parmenides would thus correspond to a “deceiver speech of words” , which begins in verse 8.51 and ends in the Br. 19, speech that would diminish the positive character that physics has for Parmenides. The only way to claim the existence of a “Parmenides phusikos” consists of take off the fragments “physical” of those in which the goddess exposes “the opinions of mortals”, which criticizes. Obviously, this hypothesis implies a critical review of the doxographical tradition, that begins with Aristotle.

Résumé : Comme tous les Présocratiques, Parménide s’est intéressé à la phúsis; donc, considérer qu’il était un phusikós, c’est tout à fait naturel. L. Rossetti, dans son cappolavoro en deux volumes Un altroParmenide (Diogenes Multimedia, Bologne, 2017), a étudié d’une manière très détaillée la question. Cependant, la perspective à partir de laquelle Rossetti a envisagé la question n’a pas pu se dégager de deus obstacles principaux : la place dans laquelle se trouvent les textes « physiques » (à l’intérieur de la « doxa ») et le caractère négatif que la « doxa » a aux yeux de Parménide. En effet, en fonction d’une division arbitraire du Poème en deux parties, proposée par G.G. Fülleborn, en 1795, les textes « physiques » de Parménide seraient à l’intérieur d’ « un ordre trompeur de mots », qui commence au vers 8.51 et se termine au fr. 19, ce qui anéantie la valeur d’une physique parménidienne. La seule façon de revendiquer une physique chez Parménide consisterait à séparer ses textes physiques de la « doxa des mortels », critique par la Déesse. Évidemment, cette possibilité suppose une critique d’une partie de la tradition doxographique, initiée par Aristote.
