Abstract This paper aims at reviewing the concept of Intralingual Translation (INTRA), in order to characterize this activity as a translation task and as an object of study of Translation Studies. Based on the debate about the status and the definition of intralingual translation (Zethsen & Hill-Madsen, 2016), we present a set of criteria that are used to describe translation and that include INTRA. After that, we propose that the concept of INTRA needs to be reformulated. Abandoning the term “Translation” as a hypernym, we coin the notion of Intralingual Reformulation as a better hypernym that includes different tasks of message reformulation across dialects, systems and representation within a single language. The resulting opposition between Interlingual Reformulation and Intralingual Reformulation captures the centrality of the process of reformulation and also specifies the distinction of interlinguality and intralinguality. Additionally, assuming Intralingual Reformulation as a hypernym also entails that this is not a single task, but that there are many different activities that can be encompassed by this term.

Resumo Este estudo tem como propósito revisar o conceito de tradução intralingual (INTRA), de modo a caracterizar essa atividade como uma tarefa de tradução e como sendo objeto de interesse dos Estudos da Tradução. É a partir do debate sobre o lugar, o status e a definição da tradução intralingual (Zethsen & Hill-Madsen, 2016), que apresentamos critérios encontrados na literatura para caracterizar tradução que incluem a INTRA. Posteriormente, sugerimos uma reformulação do conceito de INTRA. Abdicando-nos do hiperônimo “Tradução”, apresentamos a proposta do conceito de Reformulação Intralingual como um hiperônimo que melhor abarca as diferentes tarefas de reformulação que podem existir entre dialetos, sistemas e representações de uma mesma língua. A oposição entre Reformulação Interlingual e Reformulação Intralingual capta a essência da tarefa de reformulação e ainda especifica a distinção entre interlingualidade e intralingualidade. Outro ganho com o emprego do termo Reformulação Intralingual é deixar claro que esse é, por si só, um hiperônimo e que não há um único tipo de atividade intralingual, mas diferentes tarefas que podem ser assim entendidas.

Resumo A pesquisa está voltada para o fenômeno da sinonímia na tradução entre Língua portuguesa (LP) e Libras, como foco o trabalho do profissional intérprete de Libras. Objetiva-se analisar a sinonímia nas referidas línguas como também verificar a valorização semântica entre as sentenças traduzidas pelo intérprete de Libras. O aporte teórico é formado por Lyons (1981); Ilari e Geraldi (2006); âmara Jr. (2002), além dos estudos de Lacerda (2009) e Rosa (2008). Utilizamos abordagem quantitativa e qualitativa. Obtemos as traduções para análises a partir de sentenças escritas em português e submetidas a traduções por intérpretes de Libras do munícipio de Abaetetuba-Pa. Constatou-se que a sinonímia, por ser um processo constitutivo da tradução, é essencial para garantir o sentido na língua de chegada. Assim, qualquer perda semântica como verificada nas análises das traduções com o sentido literal e no acréscimo de informação pelo intérprete na tradução, provocou prejuízos ao processo sinonímico. Consequentemente, o trabalho do intérprete de Libras é muito importante para os surdos e a tradução precisa ser realizadas com ética e responsabilidade. Precisa ser um recurso para atender à compreensão do surdo de uma língua que ele não ouve.

Abstract The research is focused on the synonymy phenomenon in translation between the Portuguese language and Brazilian sign language - LI-BRAS, focused on the work of Libras professional interpreter. The objective is to analyze the synonymy in the Portuguese language and LIBRAS as well as verify the semantic value of the sentences translated by LIBRAS interpreters. The theoretical basis is formed by Lyons (1981); Fernandes & Correia (2011); Chomsky (2006) and Saussure (2006), and studies of the Quadros (2004) and Rosa (2008). We use quantitative and qualitative approach. We obtain the translation for analyzes from sentences written in Portuguese and submitted to translations by LIBRAS interpreters of the Abaetetuba city. Concluded that the synonymy, as a constitutive process of translation, is essential to ensure the meaning in the target language. So any semantic loss as verified in the analyzes in translation with the literal meaning and information increase the interpreter translating for LIBRAS synonymic caused damage to the process. Consequently, the LIBRAS interpreter’s work is very important for the deaf and the translation must be carried out with ethics and responsibility. To be a resource to help the understanding of the deaf in a language that he does not hear.
