Abstract: The distribution patterns of the freshwater fish within Tabasco wetlands have not being yet studied at a regional scale. We implemented an ecological niche modeling approach to: 1) identify the potential richness distribution patterns of native fish; 2) evaluate the relative importance of climatic and topographic variables in fish distribution, and 3) analyze if the natural protected areas correspond to areas with higher potential species richness. We used occurrence records of 41 native fish species and 22 interpolated surfaces that represent topographic features and annual, seasonal and extreme trends of temperature and precipitation to generate niche-based potential geographic distribution maps using the GARP and MaxEnt algorithms. Our results show that habitat affinities can be detected at the regional scale using macro-climatic and topographic variables. Despite the apparent evenness of the system, species’ distributions were not homogenous at the regional scale. The classification tree analysis showed that the mean temperature of the driest quarter was the most influential variable for clustering species. We found that areas with the highest potential species richness are not included in the natural protected areas network. This information can be used for the development of new and better native fish conservation strategies, like expanding the current ones or establishing new natural protected areas.

Resumen: Los patrones de distribución de los peces dulceacuícolas de los humedales de Tabasco no han sido estudiados a escala regional. En este estudio, obtuvimos modelos de nicho ecológico para: 1) identificar los patrones de distribución potencial de riqueza de peces nativos; 2) evaluar la importancia relativa de las variables climáticas y topográficas en su distribución y 3) analizar si las áreas naturales protegidas coinciden con las áreas de mayor riqueza potencial. Utilizamos registros de presencia de 41 especies de peces nativos y 22 superficies interpoladas que representan las características topográficas y las tendencias anuales, estacionales y extremas de temperatura y precipitación para generar mapas de distribución potencial basados en los algoritmos GARP y MaxEnt. Nuestros resultados muestran que las afinidades de hábitat pueden ser detectadas a escala regional utilizando variables macroclimáticas y topográficas. A pesar de la aparente uniformidad del sistema, la distribución de especies no fue homogénea a escala regional. El análisis de árbol mostró que la temperatura media del trimestre más seco es la variable más influyente en el agrupamiento de especies. Además, las áreas con mayor riqueza potencial no están incluidas en la red de áreas naturales protegidas. Esta información puede utilizarse para desarrollar nuevas y mejores estrategias de conservación de peces, como la ampliación o el establecimiento de nuevas áreas naturales protegidas.

Abstract: The Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus), considered endangered, is protected at national (Mexico) and international levels. Since Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, sightings of manatees have been rare at Conil Lagoon, located within the natural reserve “Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Yum Balam”. However, increased reports of sightings from local fishermen and tour guides suggest manatees may be repopulating the lagoon. Here we report 15 sightings of the Antillean manatee from 2011 to 2016. Group sizes ranged from 1 to 15 individuals and we documented the presence of reproductive groups and mother-calf pairs. The apparent recovery of the species at Conil Lagoon and adjacent areas may be the result of local conservation efforts, or the result of changes in habitat use and distribution of the Caribbean population. A systematic, long-term local monitoring program is necessary to estimate manatee abundance and characterize their distribution in this area.

Resumen: El manatí antillano (Trichechus manatus manatus) es una especie en peligro de extinción que se encuentra protegida a nivel nacional (México) e internacional. A partir del paso del huracán Gilberto en 1988, los avistamientos de manatí fueron escasos en la laguna Conil, ubicada dentro del área natural protegida Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Yum Balam. Sin embargo, el aumento de avistamientos por parte de pescadores locales y guías de turismo sugieren que el manatí podría estar repoblando la laguna. En este trabajo reportamos 15 avistamientos de manatí antillano desde 2010 hasta 2016. El tamaño de los grupos varía desde 1 hasta 15 individuos y documentamos la presencia de grupos reproductivos y pares de madre-cría. La aparente recuperación del manatí en la laguna de Conil y las áreas adyacentes puede deberse a los esfuerzos de conservación a nivel local, o al resultado de cambios en el uso de hábitat y distribución de la población del Caribe. Un programa de monitoreo sistemático a largo plazo es necesario para estimar la abundancia de manatíes y caracterizar su distribución en esta área.

ABSTRACT The characterization of species' functional traits is a major step in the understanding and description of communities in natural habitats. The classification of species into functional groups is a useful tool to identify redundancy and uniqueness. We studied the fish community of a pristine freshwater wetland in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve by analysing two multidimensional functions: food acquisition and locomotion. We investigated changes in the functional group structure between habitats (permanent and temporary pools) and seasons (dry and wet). Six functional groups with different ecological characteristics were detected, two of which had high functional redundancy and three of them were represented by single species with unique ecological functions. In permanent pools during the dry season, functional group richness and diversity were lower, while evenness was higher. During the wet season, all functional groups were detected and similar functional group structure was found between habitats. These results suggest an effect of environmental filtering during the dry season and niche complementarity during the wet season.

RESUMEN La caracterización de los rasgos funcionales de las especies es un paso importante en la comprensión y descripción de las comunidades en hábitats naturales. La clasificación de especies en grupos funcionales es una herramienta útil para identificar la redundancia y la especialización. Se estudió la comunidad de peces de un humedal prístino de agua dulce en la Reserva de la Biosfera de Sian Ka'an, analizando dos funciones multidimensionales: adquisición de alimento y la locomoción. Analizamos los cambios en la estructura de los grupos funcional entre hábitats (permanentes y temporales) y temporadas (lluvias y secas). Seis grupos funcionales con características ecológicas distintas fueron detectados, dos de los cuales presentaron una alta redundancia funcional y tres de ellos están representados únicamente por una especie con una función ecológica particular. En las pozas permanentes durante la temporada de secas, la riqueza y diversidad de grupos funcionales fueron menores; mientras que la equitatividad de grupos funcionales fue mayor. Durante la temporada de lluvias se detectaron todos los grupos funcionales y la estructura de los grupos fue similar entre los hábitat. Estos resultados sugieren que los filtros ambientales tienen un efecto durante la temporada de secas y la complementariedad de nicho durante la temporada de lluvias.
