ABSTRACT Backgrounds: Urban forests can provide citizens with various types and quantities of ecosystem services. However, the contribution of isolated forest fragments to this process and its value are not well understood. Therefore, our main goal was to analyze the patterns of ecosystem service delivery by three forest fragments along an urban-to-rural gradient. Carbon storage was estimated using three different models (general and local), with input variables such as diameter at breast height (DBH), total height, and wood density. Rainfall interception was assessed using water collectors placed inside the forest fragment, at the border, and outside, throughout the four seasons. Data were collected from three forest fragments of different types (urban, periurban, and rural), each covering an area of 1.0 hectare. Results: Isolated forest fragments did not significantly differ (p>0.01) in terms of carbon stocks compared to a protected area. The urban fragment had a carbon stock of 33.70 mg.ha-1, while the rural fragment had a carbon stock of 37.19 mg.ha-1. Regarding rainfall interception, there were no significant differences (p>0.01) among the forest fragments. The highest average rainfall interception percentage (58.65%) was observed during the summer. The capacity for rainfall interception changed from the border (lower) to the center of the fragment (higher) in a similar manner for both isolated and connected forest fragments. Conclusion: Isolated Forest fragments can provide ecosystem services (carbon storage and rainfall interception) in the same way as connected forest fragments in the periurban and rural places, like in protected areas. It highlights the importance of promoting the protection of forests fragments in cities.

Abstract The planning and management of street trees are indispensable for sustainable urban development and requires knowledge of the existing situation. The identification of forest species which are present on streets and their distributions is essential to support the adequate planning of street afforestation. This information enables to carry out the general characterization of the place of interest and identify priority areas for management actions. Thus, the present study aimed to identify priority areas for interventions in urban street trees of São Pedro do Sul and to verify the influence of exotic species on the diversity index. A census was carried out collecting information about the tree species and their geographic positions, checking it with the specialized literature. The frequencies for families and species were obtained, the Shannon-Wiener index (H ') was calculated for species diversity. The spatialization of trees within the limits of neighborhoods and roads was carried out using a Kernel map. Finally, the density of individuals per kilometer of road in each neighborhood was obtained. 3365 trees were cataloged, of which 98 were not possible to be identifiable. The presence of 91 species was registered, distributed in 34 families. The Fabaceae family obtained the highest density of individuals (19.55%). Exotic species concentrated 63.98 % of the population, with Ligustrum lucidum being the most frequent species (15.66%). The municipality obtained average values of 41.18 trees per kilometer of road and a diversity index of 3.22. The attention index made it possible to identify the neighborhoods with the greatest need for adaptation in terms of the density of road afforestation. The Kernel map made it possible to visualize the distribution of the road afforestation. It was also observed that the diversity of tree species measured in each neighborhood is represented essentially by invasive alien species and that as the diversity values increase, the composition of afforestation with invasive species trees stands out.

Resumo O planejamento e manejo da arborização viária são indispensáveis para o desenvolvimento urbano sustentável e requerem o conhecimento da situação existente. A identificação e a distribuição das espécies florestais presentes nas vias públicas são fundamentais para subsidiar o planejamento adequado da arborização viária. A partir dessas informações, pode-se realizar a caracterização geral do local de interesse e identificar áreas prioritárias para ações de manejo. Dessa maneira, o presente estudo teve como objetivo identificar áreas prioritárias para intervenções na arborização viária de São Pedro do Sul e verificar a influência das espécies vegetais exóticas no índice de diversidade. Realizou-se um censo quantitativo coletando-se informações sobre a posição geográfica das árvores e arbustos e identificação das espécies vegetais. Determinaram-se as frequências para famílias e espécies e calculou-se o índice de Shannon-Wiener (H’) para diversidade de espécies. A espacialização das árvores dentro dos limites dos bairros e vias foi realizada por meio de um mapa de Kernel. Por fim, obteve-se a densidade de indivíduos por quilômetro de via em cada bairro. Foram catalogados 3365 indivíduos, dos quais 98 não foram passíveis de identificação. Registrou-se a presença de 91 espécies, distribuídas em 34 famílias. A família Fabaceae obteve a maior densidade de indivíduos (19,55%). As espécies exóticas concentraram 63,98% da população, sendo a espécie Ligustrum lucidum a mais frequente (15,66%). O município obteve valores médios de 41,18 árvores por quilômetro de via e índice de diversidade de 3,22. O índice de atenção possibilitou identificar os bairros com maiores necessidades de adequação quanto à densidade da arborização viária. O mapa de Kernel possibilitou a visualização da distribuição da arborização viária. Observou-se também que a diversidade de espécies vegetais mensurada em cada bairro está representada essencialmente por espécies vegetais exóticas invasoras e que, à medida que os valores de diversidade aumentam, a composição da arborização com árvores de espécies invasoras se destaca.

RESUMO As ferramentas que possibilitam a análise da arborização de ruas incluem as descrições fitossociológicas para expressão da importância das espécies. Para este trabalho foram coletadas informações de 15 unidades amostrais de um inventário realizado em 2010 na cidade de Curitiba - PR. Com base nisso foram calculados os índices descritores da fitossociologia, com dominância expressa pelo DAP (m) e pela Área de Copa (m²) para a obtenção de distintos Valores de Importância (VI), e com densidade expressa pelo índice de performance da espécie (IPE) e dominância expressa pela Área de Copa (m²) para o cálculo de outro VI. Os resultados demonstraram que a classificação das espécies pela frequência relativa (proporção de indivíduos) exalta a importância das espécies com maior número de árvores e que a classificação das espécies pelo VI obtido pela dominância descrita pelo DAP tende a exaltar a importância daquelas com maior tamanho de tronco. Por outro lado, a obtenção do VI pela dominância descrita pela área de copa tende a expressar melhor a participação das espécies na composição da arborização de ruas e a obtenção do VI por meio do índice de performance da espécie demonstra mais claramente a abundância, as dimensões e a condição das árvores.

ABSTRACT Tools that make possible street tree analysis include phytosociological descriptions to express relative species importance. To this work, it was collected information from 15 unit plots of an inventory held in 2010 in the city of Curitiba, in Paraná state. On this base, the phytosociological description indexes were calculated with dominance expressed by DBH (m) and by Crown Area (m²) to obtain distinct Importance Values (VI), and with density expressed by species performance index (SPI) and dominance expressed by Crown Area (m²) to calculate another VI. Results showed that species classification by relative frequency (proportion of individuals) exalt the importance of species with a greater number of trees and that species classification by VI obtained by dominance described by DBH tend to exalt the importance of those with a greater trunk size. On the other hand, the attainment of VI by dominance described by crown area tend to express a better species participation on street tree composition and the attainment of VI by the species performance index shows more clearly the abundance, the dimensions and the condition of the trees.

RESUMO A estrutura e os equipamentos urbanos podem restringir o correto desenvolvimento das árvores e de sua arquitetura típica. A Tipuana tipu (Benth.) O. Kuntze (tipuana) tem sido podada de forma contínua por ser uma espécie de grande porte e por estar entre as mais plantadas na cidade de Curitiba. Por conta disso, o presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a alteração da arquitetura típica de Tipuana tipu na arborização de ruas de Curitiba, por meio de delineamento inteiramente casualizado contendo uma parcela testemunha composta por 6 árvores, um tratamento com 6 árvores sob fiação e outro com 6 árvores em ruas livres de fiação. A partir de fotografias horizontais das árvores foram obtidas variáveis dendrométricas, tendo por base uma escala métrica acoplada à altura do DAP. Assim, foram calculados índices morfométricos para descrever relações interdimensionais para a espécie, em árvores sem poda (testemunha) e em árvores podadas (tratamentos). Os resultados demonstraram que as podas de elevação alteram a arquitetura típica da tipuana modificando seu contorno e sua forma, além de prejudicar seu efeito estético. Os índices que podem expressar as alterações, de forma significativa (p<0,05), foram: índice de abrangência, índice de saliência, ângulo de copa, proporção de copa e relação HR/HP.

ABSTRACT The urban structure and equipments can restrict the correct development of trees and its typical architecture. Tipuana tipu (Benth.) O. Kuntze (rosewood) has been pruned continuously for being a species of large size and for being the most planted tree in the city of Curitiba. Because of that, this work aimed to assess the changes in the typical architecture of Tipuana tipu on street trees of Curitiba through completely randomized design containing a check plot composed by 6 trees and a treatment with 6 trees under utility lines and another with 6 trees in streets without utility lines. From horizontal photographs of trees there were obtained dendrometric variables based on a metric scale attached at DBH. Thus, the morphometric indexes were calculated to describe dimensional relationships for the species on trees without pruning (check plot) and on pruned trees (treatments). The results showed that raising pruning change typical architecture of rosewood modifying its outline and its form, in addition to harm its aesthetic effect. The indexes that can express changes significantly (p<0.05), were: range index, salience index, crown angle, crown proportion and relation RH/PH.

Diante dos impactos advindos do processo de urbanização, uma das formas de favorecer a melhoria da qualidade de vida da população das cidades é realizar o planejamento e plantio de árvores, em áreas públicas ou particulares. Os benefícios ambientais ou socioeconômicos almejados com a arborização de ruas provêm, em maior parte, da copa das árvores e do manto de cobertura formado nas ruas. Dessa forma, objetivou-se com esta pesquisa analisar a distribuição e dinâmica de classes de área de copa de árvores avaliadas em dois inventários conduzidos na arborização de ruas da cidade de Curitiba, em 1984 e 2010. A distribuição dos dados em classes de área de copa, para o total de dados amostrados e para cada parcela, demonstrou que há tendência para uma curva de distribuição do tipo decrescente, típica de povoamentos multiâneos e multiespecíficos, tanto para o ano de 1984 quanto para o ano de 2010, com maior frequência de indivíduos na classe de área de copa de 0 - 50 m². Entretanto, quando analisados os dados das principais espécies, constatou-se que para algumas delas a curva de distribuição mudou de decrescente, em 1984, para unimodal, em 2010. Houve maior ingresso de árvores remanescentes nas classes de 50 | | 100 m² e 100 - 150 m² e maior remoção da classe de 0 - 50 m². Conclui-se que foi possível compreender, em parte, características comportamentais de espécies e verificar sinais de amadurecimento da arborização de ruas de Curitiba quando analisada 26 anos depois.

In front of impacts arising from the process of urbanization, one of the ways to facilitate the improvement of life quality of urban population is to perform the planning and the planting of trees, in private or public areas. The environmental or socio-economic benefits desired with street trees come from the top of the trees and from the covering mantle formed over the streets. In this way, the goal of this research was to analyze the distribution and dynamics of crown area classes of trees measured in two inventories held in Curitiba streets trees in 1984 and 2010. Data distribution in crown area classes, for the total data and each parcel sampled, demonstrated that there is a tendency for a descending distribution curve type, typical of multi-year and multispecific stands, both for the year 1984 as for the year 2010, with greater frequency of individuals in the crown area class 0 | | 50m². However, when data was analyzed for the main species it was found that for some of them the distribution curve changed from a descending type, in 1984, to a unimodal type, in 2010. There was greater recruitment of remaining trees in classes 50 - 100m² and 100 - 150m² and larger class removal of class 0 | | 50m². It was concluded that it was possible to understand, in part, behavioral characteristics of the species and verify signs of maturing of Curitiba streets trees when analyzed 26 years later.
