Resumo Objetivo Os Brejos de Altitude são áreas com regime pluviométrico privilegiado em relação ao seu entorno, o que favorece seu uso para ocupação humana e atividades agrícolas, ações que promovem severas transformações na paisagem e podem contribuir para a degradação dos recursos hídricos locais. Nessa perspectiva, dada a grande importância dos reservatórios de água para essa região e a alta demanda hídrica, este estudo teve como objetivo analisar o estado de conservação da qualidade da água em reservatórios submetidos a diferentes níveis de perturbação antrópica no Brejo de Altitude do Estado da Paraíba, Brasil. Métodos Campanhas de amostragem foram realizadas durante um ano em seis reservatórios: Mazagão I, Mazagão II, Vaca Brava, Saulo Maia, Rio do Canto e Lagoa do Paó, para medir as variáveis físico-químicas da água. Resultados Há influência dos padrões pluviométricos anuais sobre a capacidade desses ecossistemas de responder às pressões antrópicas, indicando os efeitos da sazonalidade no reservatório Lagoa do Paó. Para Vaca Brava, os baixos volumes de água acumulados revelaram-se mais críticos para mudanças na qualidade da água do que o uso e ocupação das margens desse reservatório. Além disso, os reservatórios Mazagão I e II apresentaram baixa condutividade elétrica. O reservatório Saulo Maia apresentou águas límpidas com baixo teor de fósforo e pode ser utilizado como referência de ambiente conservado para Brejos de Altitude. Conclusões A conservação do entorno dos reservatórios no Brejo de Altitude não é suficiente para garantir a qualidade da água, pois, a precipitação elevada concentrada em determinada época do ano a afeta negativamente. Abstract Aim Humid forest enclaves are areas with privileged rainfall patterns compared to the surrounding regions, which favours their use for human settlement and agricultural activities, actions that promote severe transformations of the landscape and can contribute to the degradation of local water resources. From this perspective, given the great importance of water reservoirs for this region and the high demand for water, this study aimed to analyse the conservation status of water quality in reservoirs subjected to different anthropic disturbance in a humid forest enclave in the State of Paraíba, Brazil. Methods Sampling campaigns were carried out for one year in six reservoirs: Mazagão I, Mazagão II, Vaca Brava, Saulo Maia, Rio do Canto and Lagoa do Paó, to measure the physic-chemical variables of the water. Results The influence of annual rainfall patterns on the capacity of these ecosystems to respond to anthropic pressures, indicating the effects of seasonality in the Lagoa do Paó reservoir. For the Vaca Brava, the low accumulated water volumes turned out to be more critical for changes in water quality than the use and occupation of the margins of this reservoir. Furthermore, the Mazagão I and II reservoirs showed low electrical conductivity. The Saulo Maia reservoir exhibit clear waters with low phosphorus content and can be used as a reference for a preserved environment for a highland humid forest enclave. Conclusions The conservation of the reservoir environment in the highland humid forest enclave is not sufficient to guarantee the water quality, as it is concentrated an affected at a certain time of the year. Resumo: Objetivo O estudo analisou o potencial uso dos grupos funcionais do fitoplâncton como bioindicador ambiental em ecossistemas aquáticos do semiárido brasileiro. Métodos Usando dados coletados de uma lagoa natural e dois reservatórios ao longo de cinco anos, avaliamos a relação entre grupos funcionais e condições ambientais por meio de uma abordagem multivariada. O índice Q foi aplicado para avaliar o estado ecológico desses ecossistemas. Resultados Em Panati, uma lagoa temporária e natural, a dessecação parcial do habitat e presença de macrófitas aquáticas refletiram nas menores concentrações de nutrientes e na composição do fitoplâncton, com alta biomassa de Chlorophyceae cocóides, diatomáceas e desmídias (grupos funcionais J, MP e N, respectivamente). Os reservatórios Taperoá e Soledade apresentaram alta contribuição de cianobactérias, no entanto a biomassa e a contribuição de cianobactérias em Taperoá (SN, S1) foram menores do que em Soledade. Nesse reservatório, as cianobactérias foram mais abundantes, alternando em dominância (LO, M, LM, SN, S1). De acordo com as tendências reveladas pela análise de redundância (RDA), os principais fatores abióticos atuantes sobre a estrutura dos grupos funcionais do fitoplâncton foram o pH, os nutrientes e a disponibilidade de luz. Como esperado, a composição do fitoplâncton influenciou diretamente o resultado do índice Q, mostrando condições ruins a toleráveis em Soledade, médias a boas em Taperoá e boas a excelentes em Panati. Conclusões O índice Q mostrou-se uma boa ferramenta para avaliar a qualidade da água e o estado ecológico de ecossistemas aquáticos do semiárido brasileiro, refletindo a influência de mecanismos naturais de controle sobre o florescimento de cianobactérias prejudiciais em ecossistemas temporários.

Abstract: Aim The study analyzed the potential use of the phytoplankton functional groups as an environmental bioindicator in aquatic ecosystems of Brazilian semiarid region. Methods Using data collected over five years of a natural lagoon and two reservoirs, we evaluate the relationship between functional groups and environmental conditions through the multivariate approach. The Q index was applied to assess ecological status in these ecosystems. Results In Panati, the temporary and natural lagoon, the partial habitat desiccation and presence of macrophytes reflected in the less nutrients concentrations and phytoplankton composition, with high biomass of coccoids Chlorophyceae, diatoms and desmids (functional groups J, MP and N, respectively). Taperoá and Soledade reservoirs presented high cyanobacteria contribution, however the biomass and contribution of cyanobacteria in Taperoá (SN, S1) were lower than in Soledade. In this reservoir, cyanobacteria were more abundant, alternating in dominance (LO, M, LM, SN, S1). According to tendencies revealed by Redundancy Analysis (RDA), the main driving abiotic factors on the phytoplankton functional groups were pH, nutrients and light availability. As expected, phytoplankton composition directly influenced the Q index result, showing mostly bad to tolerable conditions in Soledade, medium to good in Taperoá and good to excellent in Panati. Conclusions The Q index was a good tool to assess the water quality and ecological status in aquatic ecosystems from the Brazilian semiarid region, reflecting the influence of natural control mechanisms on the harmful cyanobacteria blooms in temporary ecosystems.

Resumo Objetivo Avaliar a estrutura e dinâmica de grupos funcionais do fitoplâncton (GFs) ao longo de um gradiente de cobertura de macrófitas e suas relações com as variáveis ambientais em lago pequeno e raso de águas claras. Métodos Análises de variáveis físicas, químicas e da comunidade fitoplanctônica foram realizadas entre agosto 2014 a junho 2015, em três pontos distribuídos ao longo lago Santa Lúcia (Paraíba-Brasil). Testes de Tukey, Wilcoxon, seguido da CCA e Anova foram realizados. Resultados A cobertura de macrofitas submersas e a biomassa fitoplanctônica apresentaram distribuição espaço-temporal uniforme. O aumento da precipitação pluviométrica promoveu aumento da participação do grupo N e redução do grupo SN, provavelmente associados a alterações na estabilidade da coluna d´água. Conclusão A uniformidade na composição e estrutura dos grupos funcionais ao longo da cobertura de macrófitas confirmam a tendência de que em lagos pequenos e rasos as comunidades de zonas limnéticas e litorâneas tendem a ser semelhantes.

Abstract Aim To evaluate the structure and dynamics of functional phytoplankton groups (FGs) over a macrophyte cover gradient and their relations with environmental variable in small, shallow clear-water lake. Methods Physical, chemical and phytoplankton analyses were made between August 2014 and June 2015 at three points on the Santa Lucia lake (Paraiba, Brazil). Tukey and Wilcoxon tests were applied to the data followed by CCA and Anova. Results The submerged macrophyte cover and phytoplankton biomass presented high spatial and temporal uniformity. The increase in rainfall induced small variations in functional groups, promoting increase the N group and reduction of the SN. Conclusion The homogeneity in the composition and structure functional groups along macrophyte cover confirm the tendency that in small and shallow lakes communities of limnetic and shoreline zones tend to be similar.

Resumo Objetivo Avaliar os efeitos da heterogeneidade ambiental promovida pela estratificação térmica sobre a distribuição de variáveis limnológicas e de grupos funcionais fitoplanctônicos (GF´s) em dois lagos naturais. Métodos Foram realizadas medidas mensais no perfil vertical de um lago raso monomítico quente (Lago Carioca) e em um profundo e meromítico (Lago Dom Helvécio), ao longo de cinco anos. Resultados A zonação vertical evidente gerada pela elevada estabilidade térmica durante o período de estratificação favoreceram o aumento da heterogeneidade espacial e, consequentemente, da riqueza de grupos funcionais nos dois lagos. No epilímnio, ocorreu dominância de clorofíceas e desmídias de pequeno tamanho (NA, A e X1, ≤20µm) e dinofíceas de maior porte (Lo, ≥20µm), associadas a alta turbulência, disponibilidade de luz e limitação por fósforo solúvel. No metalímnio, foram observadas cianobactérias filamentosas (R) e clorofíceas coloniais (F) de maior tamanho (≥20µm), associadas a hábitats estáveis com elevadas concentrações de N-NH4 e P-PO4-3 e condições limitantes de luz. Comparativamente, o lago Dom Helvécio registrou maior riqueza de GF´s nas camadas meta-hipolimnéticas (SN, P) bem como maior de número de espécies acomodadas por grupo. Sazonalmente, mudanças nas condições climáticas (ex. redução da temperatura do ar provocando perda de calor) causaram a quebra da estabilidade da coluna d’água, o que promoveu a redistribuição das formas dissolvidas de nutrientes e o aumento da limitação por luz nos dois lagos durante o período de mistura. Como consequência, foi identificada uma drástica redução de riqueza de GF´s e da biomassa das populações (≤80%). Conclusões A estabilidade térmica e atelomixia foram funções de força fundamentais na geração de heterogeneidade vertical durante a estratificação, favorecendo a coexistência e, consequentemente, o aumento da riqueza e biomassa de GF´s.

Abstract Aim To evaluate the effects of environmental heterogeneity promoted by thermal stratification on the distribution of limnologic variables and phytoplankton functional groups (FGs) in two natural lakes. Methods Monthly measurements were performed over a five-year period in the vertical profile of a warm monomitic shallow lake (Lago Carioca) and in a deep and meromictic (Lake Dom Helvécio). Results The vertical zonation generated by the high thermal stability during the stratification period promoted an increase in the spatial heterogeneity and, consequently, in the richness of functional groups of the two lakes. In the epilimnion, the dominance of small chlorophytes and desmids (NA, A and X1, ≤20μm) and larger dinophyceans (Lo, ≥20μm) were associated with high turbulence and light availability and soluble phosphorus limitation. In the metalimnion, the presence of filamentous cyanobacteria (R) and colonial chlorophyceans (F) of larger size (≥20µm) were associated with stable habitats with high concentrations of N-NH4 and P-PO4-3 and light limiting conditions. Comparatively, Lake Dom Helvécio presented a higher richness of FGs in the meta-hipolimnetic layers (SN, P) as well as a higher number of species per functional group. Seasonal changes in the climatic conditions (e.g. the decrease in air temperature with the consequent heat loss) caused the break of the water column stability, which promoted the redistribution of the dissolved nutrient forms and the increase of light limitation in the two lakes during the mixing period. Therefore, there was a drastic reduction in the richness and population biomass of FGs (≤80%). Conclusions Thermal stability and atelomixis were the main driving forces of vertical heterogeneity during the stratification, favoring the coexistence of FGs and, consequently, their increase in richness and biomass.

OBJETIVO: a estratificação química e os padrões de limitação por luz e nutrientes foram avaliados comparativamente em dois lagos naturais, sendo um raso e o outro profundo no sudeste do Brasil. MÉTODOS: as amostragens de pH, condutividade elétrica, oxigênio dissolvido, sólidos totais dissolvidos e nutrientes foram realizadas mensalmente, durante cinco anos consecutivos no perfil vertical dos dois lagos. RESULTADOS: as análises multivariadas indicaram que o longo período de estratificação térmica favoreceu a ocorrência de estratificação química nos dois lagos. No entanto, no lago mais profundo, o perfil térmico estratificado, com elevadas concentrações hipolimnéticas de nutrientes, condutividade, sólidos totais dissolvidos e potencial redox indicaram que a mistura não foi completa mesmo durante o período de circulação anual, sugerindo uma leve meromixia e alta estabilidade química no hipolímnio. No lago mais raso, elevada atenuação de luz e alta disponibilidade das formas nitrogenadas (principalmente N-NH4) e fosfatadas foram observadas em toda a coluna d'água, mesmo durante a estratificação. No lago mais profundo, foram observadas co-limitação por N e P e baixas coeficientes de atenuação da luz. CONCLUSÃO: os padrões de estratificação térmica e química indicaram que a lagoa Carioca é um lago raso, de rápida circulação com águas túrbidas, rico em nutrientes, enquanto o lago Dom Helvécio é um lago profundo, de águas claras, oligotrófico, com tendência à meromixia e ao isolamento de solutos no hipolímnio. Nesse contexto, a meromixia foi comparada a uma "memória hipolimnética" que foi definida, no caso do lago mais profundo, como a persistência da estratificação química ao longo dos anos durante o período de sua circulação térmica.

AIM: chemical stratification and the patterns of light limitation and nutrients of two natural lakes, one shallow and the other one deep, were comparatively evaluated, both lakes located in the southeast Brazil. METHODS: pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids and nutrients were monthly collected during 5 consecutive years at the vertical profile of the two lakes. RESULTS: multivariate analysis indicated that the long thermal stratification period favored the occurrence of chemical stratification in the two lakes. However, in the deeper lake the stratified thermal profile with high hypolimnetic nutrient concentration, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and redox potential indicated that the mixing was not complete even during the annual circulation period, suggesting a slight meromixis and a high chemical stability at the hypolimnion. In the shallower lake, high light attenuation and high availability of nitrogen forms (mainly N-NH4) and phosphorus was observed along the water column, even during stratification. In the deeper lake, N and P co-limitation and low light attenuation coefficients were detected. CONCLUSION: thermal and chemical stratification patterns indicated that the Carioca lake is a shallow, turbid, nutrient rich, whereas the Dom Helvecio lake is a deep, clear, oligotrophic system with a tendency towards meromixis and the isolation of solutes in the hypolimnion. Consequently, meromixis was compared to a "hypolimnetic memory", which was defined, in the case of the deeper lake, as the maintenance of the chemical stratification along the years, during the lake thermal circulation period.

A floristic survey of the class Euglenophyceae in Panati Lake (7º11'14" S and 36º49'52" W) is presented. The samples were collected between November 2005 and April 2007 along the margins of the lake, and a total of 29 taxa were collected, described, and illustrated, comprising 11 specifics and 18 infraspecifics, with five typical and 13 non-typical varieties. The genus Trachelomonas showed the greatest richness (13 taxa), followed by the genus Lepocinclis (seven taxa). All of the 29 taxa cataloged had been previously reported for Brazil, most with wide geographical distributions, but all were new records for Paraíba State, and 25 new for northeastern Brazil - reflecting the need for more taxonomic studies of the Euglenophyceae in these locations.

OBJETIVO: Analisar a distribuição vertical dos grupos funcionais fitoplanctônicos em dois ciclos nictemerais em um lago tropical monomítico raso; MÉTODOS: As amostragens das variáveis abióticas, comunidades fitoplanctônica e zooplanctônica foram realizadas a intervalos de 3 horas ao longo de 24 horas em perfis verticais, nos períodos de estratificação (fevereiro) e de circulação (julho); RESULTADOS: A elevada estabilidade térmica e a atelomixia parcial favoreceram a coexistência de grupos funcionais sensíveis a desestratificação N A e F, compostos por desmidias e clorofícias cocoides e pelos grupos S2 e Lo, persistentes durante a circulação, e compostos por cianobactérias filamentosas não fixadoras de N2 e dinoflagelados, respectivamente. A descontinuidade na distribuição vertical dos grupos funcionais com dominância de N A e F no epilímnio e de R e Lo no metalímnio e hipolímnio foi característica da estratificação, e diferenças entre períodos diurno e noturno não foram significativas. CONCLUSÕES: A redução em até 80% da biomassa do grupo NA durante a circulação indica a influência da estabilidade térmica e atelomixia parcial como fatores determinantes na compartimentalização dos grupos funcionais, restringindo a migração vertical diurna (MVD) e a perda por sedimentação durante a estratificação.

AIM: This study analyzed the vertical distribution of phytoplankton functional groups in two diel cycles in a warm monomictic shallow tropical lake; METHODS: Sampling of the abiotic variables, phytoplankton and zooplankton communities was performed at intervals of 3 hours over 24 hours in vertical profiles, in the stratification (February) and circulation (July) periods; RESULTS: The high thermal stability and the partial atelomixis favored the coexistence of functional groups that are sensitive to destratification, N A and F, composed by desmids and Chlorophyceae coccoids, and groups S2 and Lo, which persisted during the circulation, and were composed by filamentous cyanobacteria which do not fix N2 and dinoflagellates, respectively. The discontinuity in the vertical distribution of the functional groups, with dominance of N A and F in the epilimnion and R and Lo in the metalimnion and hypolimnion, was characteristic of the stratification, and differences between the daytime and nighttime periods were not significant. CONCLUSIONS: The reduction of 80% of the biomass of the NA group during the mixing period indicates the influence of thermal stability and partial atelomixis as determinant factors in the compartmentalization of functional groups, restricting daytime vertical migration (DVM) and loss by sedimentation during the stratification period.
