This study sought to explore the effect of the administration of long-term, exogenous oxytocin on buffalo milk. In this study, newly-calved postpartum buffaloes (Nili-Ravi) (n = 24) were divided equally into three groups: (control without oxytocin - CON, 10 i.u. oxytocin - LOW, 30 i.u. oxytocin - HIGH). Oxytocin was injected twice a day before each 154-day milking. Milk production, milk composition, somatic cell counts, and progesterone (P4) were evaluated daily, weekly, and fortnightly, respectively. Results revealed that the HIGH group produced high milk production and pH values, but lower milk density than the CON and LOW groups. The HIGH group and LOW group had higher milk fat and solid-not-fat (SNF) compared to the CON group. SNF and protein were higher in the LOW group than the CON group. Freezing point, lactose, solids, somatic cell count, and P4 were similar in all three groups. Overall, it can be concluded that long-term, exogenous oxytocin has a positive effect on milk production, fat, SNF, and protein, with a negative effect on milk pH. None of the oxytocin treatments affected somatic cell counts and P4 concentration in postpartum buffalo milk.

Abstract Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) causes bacterial leaf blight that is a major threat to rice production. Crop losses in extreme situations can reach up to75%, and millions of hectares of rice are affected each year. Management of the disease required information about the spatial distribution of BLB incidence, severity, and prevalence. In this study, major rice-growing areas of Pakistan were surveyed during 2018-2019 for disease occurrence, and thematic maps were developed using geographic information system (GIS). Results showed that Narowal district had highest percentage of disease incidence (54-69%), severity (42-44%), and prevalence (72-90%) meanwhile Jhung district had the lowest incidence (21-23%), severity (18-22%), and prevalence (45-54%). To understand the environmental factors contributing to this major rice disease, the research analyze, the spatial relationships between BLB prevalence and environmental variables. Those variables include relative humidity (RH), atmospheric pressure (A.P), minimum temperature, soil organic carbon, soil pH, and elevation, which were evaluated by using GIS-based Ordinary Least Square (OLS) spatial model. The fitted model had a coefficient of determination (R2) of 65 percent explanatory power of disease development. All environmental variables showed a general trend of positive correlation between BLB prevalence and environmental variables. The results show the potential for disease management and prediction using environmental variable and assessment.

Resumo Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) causa o crestamento bacteriano das folhas, que é uma grande ameaça à produção de arroz. As perdas de safra em situações extremas podem chegar a 75% e a milhões de hectares de arroz são afetados a cada ano. O manejo da doença exigia informações sobre a distribuição espacial da incidência, gravidade e prevalência de BLB. Neste estudo, as principais áreas de cultivo de arroz do Paquistão foram pesquisadas durante 2018 e 2019 para ocorrência de doenças, e mapas temáticos foram desenvolvidos usando o sistema de informações geográficas (GIS). Os resultados mostraram que o distrito de Narowal teve a maior porcentagem de incidência da doença (54-69%), gravidade (42-44%) e prevalência (72-90%), enquanto o distrito de Jhung teve a menor incidência (21-23%), gravidade (18-22%) e prevalência (45-54%). Para compreender os fatores ambientais que contribuem para esta importante doença do arroz, a pesquisa analisa as relações espaciais entre a prevalência de BLB e as variáveis ambientais. Essas variáveis incluem umidade relativa (UR), pressão atmosférica (PA), temperatura mínima, carbono orgânico do solo, pH do solo e altitude, que sendo avaliadas a partir do modelo espacial Ordinary Least Square (OLS) baseado em GIS. O modelo ajustado teve um coeficiente de determinação (R2) de 65 por cento de poder explicativo do desenvolvimento da doença. Todas as variáveis ambientais apresentaram tendência geral de correlação positiva entre prevalência de BLB e variáveis ambientais. Os resultados mostram o potencial de manejo e predição de doenças usando variáveis e avaliações ambientais.

Abstract Heavy metal toxicity is becoming an increasing concern for environmental, human and animal health. The current research analyzed the lead (Pb) contamination in the food chain under three different irrigation sources (ground, canal, and wastewater). Soil, plant and animal samples were collected from the Jhang district of Pakistan and processed with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Lead concentration varied in the samples as: 5.22-10.73 mg/kg in soil, 2.46-10.34 mg/kg in forages and 0.736-2.45 mg/kg in animal samples. The observed lead concentration in forage and animal blood samples was higher than the standard limits. The pollution load index (0.640-1.32) in soil showed that lead contamination mainly took place at the wastewater irrigating sites. Bio-concentration factor values (0.313-1.15) were lower than one in all samples except Zea mays, showing that lead metal was actively taken up by Zea mays tissues from the soil. Enrichment factor values ranged from 0.849-3.12, showing a moderate level of lead enrichment. Daily intake and health risk index varied between 0.004-0.020 mg/kg/day and 0.906-4.99, respectively. All the samples showed maximum lead concentration at the wastewater irrigating site compared to the ground or canal water application sites. These results recommended that consistent application of wastewater for forage irrigation must be avoided to prevent health hazards associated with lead in the animal and human food chain. Government must implement adequate strategies to protect the animal and human health from the harms of toxic heavy metals.

Resumo A toxicidade de metais pesados está se tornando uma preocupação crescente para a saúde ambiental, humana e animal. A pesquisa atual analisou a contaminação por chumbo (Pb) na cadeia alimentar sob três diferentes fontes de irrigação (solo, canal e águas residuais). Amostras de solo, plantas e animais foram coletadas no distrito de Jhang, no Paquistão, e processadas com um espectrofotômetro de absorção atômica. A concentração de chumbo nas amostras variou em: 5,22-10,73 mg/kg no solo, 2,46-10,34 mg/kg nas forragens e 0,736-2,45 mg/kg nas amostras de animais. A concentração de chumbo observada nas amostras de forragem e sangue animal foi superior aos limites padrão. O índice de carga de poluição (0,640-1,32) no solo mostrou que a contaminação por chumbo ocorreu principalmente em locais de irrigação de águas residuais. Os valores do fator de bioconcentração (0,313-1,15) foram menores que um em todas as amostras, exceto Zea mays, mostrando que o chumbo metálico foi ativamente absorvido pelos tecidos de Zea mays do solo. Os valores do fator de enriquecimento variaram de 0,849-3,12, mostrando um nível moderado de enriquecimento de chumbo. A ingestão diária e o índice de risco à saúde variaram entre 0,004-0,020 mg/kg/dia e 0,906-4,99, respectivamente. Todas as amostras mostraram concentração máxima de chumbo no local de irrigação de águas residuais em comparação com os locais de aplicação de água no solo ou no canal. Esses resultados recomendam que a aplicação consistente de águas residuais para irrigação de forragem deve ser evitada para evitar riscos à saúde associados ao chumbo na cadeia alimentar animal e humana. O governo deve implementar estratégias adequadas para proteger a saúde animal e humana dos danos dos metais pesados tóxicos.

ABSTRACT This experiment was conducted to evaluate the supplemental effects of a novel protease produced from Bacillus subtilis in low crude protein (CP) corn distiller dried grain with solubles (cDDGS) based diets on growth performance, carcass attributes, nutrients digestibility, blood chemistry, and intestinal histomorphometry of broiler chickens. One hundred and sixty, one-day-old chicks were randomly allotted to one of 4 dietary treatments. Each dietary treatment had four replicates, with 10 birds in each replicate. Two basal diets were formulated for both starter (1-21d) and finisher (22-35d) phase; (PC) a corn soybean meal based diet as per standard recommendations of Ross 308; (NC) 5% cDGGS with 5% reduction in CP with concomitant reduction in essential amino acids (EAAs) compared with PC. The negative control diet was further subdivided into 3 parts. One part was without enzyme supplementation, while the other two parts were supplemented with a novel protease (PROT1) and a commercial protease (PROT2), respectively. The same procedure was adopted for finisher diets. A digestibility assay (32-35d) was carried out using acid insoluble ash (AIA), an external digestibility marker. At the end of 35d, ileal digesta were collected from four birds per experimental unit for nutrient digestibility measurement. Tissue samples of duodenum, jejunum, and ileum were collected for villus height, villus width, crypt depth, and crypt width. Body weight gain (BWG) and feed:gain were improved (p<0.05) with protease supplementation. No effect was observed on carcass parameters. However, CP digestibility, apparent digestibility coefficient for nitrogen (ADCn), nitrogen retention (N ret ), and apparent ileal amino acid digestibility (AIAAD) were improved (p<0.05). However, there was no effect on apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen (AMEn), blood glucose, total protein and cholesterol (p>0.05) and intestinal integrity (p>0.05). It was concluded that protease enzyme can improve nitrogen and CP digestibility, resulting in improved amino acids availability in low protein diets.

RESUMO: Foi conduzido um estudo com foco nos diferentes níveis de capacidade de campo no Laboratório de Ciências de Plantas Daninhas do Departamento de Agronomia da University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Erva-de-jacaré fresca foi colhida em campo para a preparação de estacas (2 cm de comprimento). Essas estacas foram mantidas em vasos por 25 dias, em níveis de 25%, 50%, 75% e 100% da capacidade de campo. Os resultados dos experimentos revelaram que, em todos os níveis de capacidade de campo, houve crescimento e brotação dos fragmentos de erva-de-jacaré. A elevação da umidade levou a aumento significativo da capacidade de emergência e sobrevivência das plantas de erva-de-jacaré até um certo nível. Comparado com o controle (25% CC), o tempo de emergência dos brotos no regime de umidade máxima (100% da CC) diminuiu em 40% (12,94 dias contra 7,17 dias). Já a taxa de sobrevivência dos fragmentos diminuiu em 60% (5 contra 1,75), embora a taxa de sobrevivência e o crescimento tenham aumentado inicialmente com 50% de CC e 75% de CC. Os valores máximos de crescimento e brotação foram observados a 50% da capacidade de campo. A capacidade de campo afeta a capacidade de brotação dos fragmentos de erva-de-jacaré, mas tem pouca influência nos parâmetros de crescimento. Os resultados sugerem que a erva-de-jacaré é capaz de suportar bem a escassez de água, assim como consegue brotar e crescer em solos totalmente submersos.

ABSTRACT: A study focusing on different field capacity levels was planned in the Weed Science Lab, Department of Agronomy, University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Fresh alligatorweed was harvested from the Agronomy fields and cuttings (2 cm length) were made from it. These cuttings were placed at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% field capacity levels in pots for 25 days. The results of the experiments revealed that at all field capacity levels, fragments of alligatorweed were able to sprout and grow. Increased moisture levels significantly increased the emergence ability and survival of the alligatorweed plants upto a certain level. Compared with the control (25% FC), emergence time of the sprouts in the maximum moisture regime (100% of FC) decreased by 40% (12.94 days vs.7.17 days). By contrast, the survival rate of the fragments decreased by 60% (5 vs. 1.75) although survival and growth rate increased at first with 50% FC and 75% FC. Maximum sprouting and growth were found at 50% field capacity. Field capacity does affect the sprouting capacity of alligatorweed fragments but it has only a little influence on growth parameters. The results suggest that alligatorweed can sustain dry conditions to a great extent and also has the ability to sprout and grow in fully submerged soils.

RESUMO: O aumento da resistência das plantas daninhas aos herbicidas, a contaminação ambiental e as preocupações com a saúde devido ao uso excessivo de herbicidas são fatores que têm instigado os pesquisadores a se concentrarem em soluções para reduzir as doses de herbicidas aplicados no controle de plantas daninhas. Os adjuvantes são mais adequados para esse propósito, pois desempenham papel crucial na obtenção de um controle satisfatório das plantas daninhas, maximizando a atividade dos herbicidas. Uma pesquisa de campo de dois anos foi realizada no Departamento de Pesquisa Agronômica da Universidade de Agricultura de Faisalabad, no Paquistão, durante o inverno de 2014 e 2015, com o objetivo de otimizar a atividade de dois herbicidas de amplo espectro em dose reduzida (75% da dose recomendada pelo fabricante) para o controle de plantas daninhas no trigo. Foi registrada a densidade mínima da planta daninha, assim como seu peso seco e a captação de NPK, com dose reduzida de mesosulfuron-methyl + iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium a 10,60 g i.a. ha-1 combinada com etoxilato de álcool gordo a 200 mL ha-1. Em seguida, foram aplicadas doses reduzidas de sulfosulfuron a 18,75 g i.a. ha-1, combinadas com o mesmo adjuvante. Entre vários tratamentos com herbicidas, a aplicação da dose reduzida de mesosulfuron-methyl + iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium a 10,60 g i.a. ha-1 combinada com o etoxilato de álcool gordo a 200 mL ha-1 provou ser mais rentável e proporcionou o mais alto rendimento de trigo durante os dois anos de estudo.

ABSTRACT: Herbicide resistance development among weeds, environmental contamination and health concerns due to the overuse of herbicides have led researchers to focus on ways to reduce herbicides to be sprayed for weed management. Adjuvants are best suited for that purpose, as they accomplish a crucial role in achieving satisfactory control of weeds by maximizing herbicidal activity. A two-year field investigation was carried out at the Agronomic Research Area, in the University of Agriculture, in Faisalabad, Pakistan during the winter of 2014 and 2015, with the objective to optimize the activity of two broad-spectrum herbicides at reduced dose (75% of the label mentioned rate) for weed control in wheat. Minimum weed density, weed dry weight and NPK uptake were recorded with reduced dosed mesosulfuron methyl + iodosulfuron methyl sodium at 10.60 g a.i. ha-1 combined with fatty alcohol ethoxylate at 200 mL ha-1. This was followed by reduced dosed sulfosulfuron at 18.75 g a.i. ha-1 combined with the same adjuvant. Among various herbicidal treatments, application of reduced dosed mesosulfuron methyl + iodosulfuron methyl sodium at 10.60 g a.i. ha-1 combined with fatty alcohol ethoxylate at 200 mL ha-1 was proved to be most cost effective and resulted in maximum wheat yield during both years of study.

In recent years, substantial advancements have been made in VLSI technology. With the introduction of CMOL (Cmos\nanowire\MOLecular Hybrid), higher circuit densities are possible. In CMOL there is an additional layer of nanofabric on top of CMOS stack. Nanodevices that lie between overlapping nanowires are programmable and can implement any combinational logic using a netlist of NOR gates. The limitation on the length of nanowires put a constraint on the connectivity domain of a circuit. The gates connected to each other must be within a connectivity radius; otherwise an extra buffer is inserted to connect them. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been used in a variety of problems that are NP-hard. PSO compared to the other iterative heuristic techniques is simpler to implement. Besides, it delivers comparable results. In this paper, a hybrid of PSO and simulated annealing (SA) for solving the cell assignment in CMOL, an NP-hard problem, is proposed. The proposed method takes advantage of the exploration and exploitation factors of PSO and the intrinsic hill climbing feature of SA to reduce the number of buffers to be inserted. Experiments conducted on ISCAS'89 benchmark circuits and a comparison with other heuristic techniques, are presented. Results showed that the proposed hybrid algorithm achieved better solution in terms of buffer count in reasonable time.
